The RAW Board continues its discussions on a variety of topics, and welcomes input from all RAW members. Topic #1 was a follow-up to this year's Montery Bay Reggae Festival and the RAW participation in that. A summary of that discussion was posted earlier to both the Forum and "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" Subject: Topic #2 _ What About Next Year? Greetings all! Kyle's last message "Kyle's Thoughts" and Nancy's response to that leads us naturally into Topic #2, "What About Next Year" Let me add some thoughts as we begin discussion of this topic: 1) As observed by many, MBRF promoters may be so "raw" on the RAW experience, as to be reluctant to offer us a repeat arrangement for next year. But I don't think we should rule out this option, since of all the festivals I have attended, MBRF is the most optimum venue for our needs. It has exisiting structures that other festivals don't have where we could hold large meetings, & nearby lodging and restaurants allow for easy freshening up and filling the stomach. Many other festival sites don't have such things, being more isolated and separated. Obviously RAW would want to have MUCH more input into such an event next year than it had this year. 2) There was some interest shown this past summer by Warren Smith of SNWMF of piggybacking a RAW conference or event, on next year's festival, but this year's attendance was low compared to the year before, and there were quite a few no-shows. There is a structure on the Frog Town site that could be used for a conference hall, but it is used in the evening for a sound session. Vendors are required to arrive and set up on Thursday, the day before the festival and we might be able to do something that day and night. This option should be further explored. 3) Reggae on the River, is in my opinion, not an option, either for piggybacking a conference, or having a RAW booth, for a number of reasons. Conference-wise, there is no structure in which to have any meetings, the festival is pretty much just a huge campground. As for a RAW booth, all non-profits have their booths OUTSIDE the main arena, and I can not imagine gathering together enough volunteers to man a RAW booth (for three days) as to make it worthwhile. Most ROTR attendees would want to be inside the arena where they could watch the bands play. 4) I have not been to other festivals, except for Roots Mountain Reggae Festival in Tonasket, WA and the Vermont Reggae Festival, and neither of these has the infrastructure on site to accomodate a conference. 5) The idea of RAW booths at other festivals has been mentioned many times, but I don't think people have thought about the logistics of doing that. First of all, we have one RAW booth that has slowly been created over the years to acheive its current status. This booth has to be stored somewhere during the many months of the year when it is not being used. Currently that is at Kym and Lawrence Hansen's house in Woodside CA. There is quite a bit of stuff that goes into putting a booth together. In order to have booths at other festivals, we would need to create more booths, buy the structures, and everything that goes into putting a booth together, find someone who would man it or set up a schedule of volunteers who would man it. We would need to address storage of the boooth for the 363 other days of the year, security of any banners and otehr booth items, and transport of the booth from and back to the storage area. In addition, who would be responsible for any monies collected? Obviously, we would want the RAW booths to sell T-shirts and CDs, and to collect new membership applications and renewal dues of RAW festival-goers. Since any booth would require a host of volunteers to man it, we would need to trust each one of them to keep accurate records, and in the end, submit any monies collected to the RAW treasury. I am not saying this is an impossible idea. In fact I would LOVE to see it happen. But we need to think it out very carefully, because it is not as easy as it sounds. To get you thinking prior to future discussions, here is a list for upcoming topics: Topic #3 Old members getting original numbers back Topic #4 RAW's 10th year anniversary DEC 2002-what should we do? All for now, let the discussions begin! Tom #33 NOTE: Any input should be sent to the RAW Forum, and NOT returned to "Wha Gwaan in RAW? Greetings to all, The following review was recently posted at http://www.rambles.net/shaggai_awake02.html. Many thanks to Ms Fasimpaur. As for the official release date, label negotiations are ongoing and a date should be set soon. Thanks for the patience on this. Respect to Ras Marcus Brevik #1573 (mbrevik@antioch-college.edu) for having Ras Shaggai on his 3 seeds radio show recently. A copy of the interview will be available soon on Ras Shaggai's website as an MP3 file. Many things are in the works for Jan-Mar 2003. Will update as soon as finalized. The review follows in its entirety: Ras Shaggai, I Awake (Conscious Vision, 2002) You've only one life to live and you've only one heart to give. There's only one life that you live, so live positive. - Ras Shaggai, "Peace Inna the World." Everybody needs a little reggae. I ran into Ras Shaggai on a Saturday afternoon at, well, let's just call it an unpretentious venue. It would be safe to say that no one came there with the primary intention of listening to his music or his philosophy. In fact, this middle-aged dark man with waist-long dreads was probably the only person there who knew who or what "Jah" was. Perhaps I was just up -- or maybe down -- for it, but Ras Shaggai's music hit me right that day. Born, raised, and educated in Ohio, Ras Shaggai has always been about music. Twenty years ago, he spent three years in the Caribbean and, in the midst of the native culture and music, found his calling. Since then, he has sang and played reggae with a number of bands, spent time in the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, and has had a string of musical accomplishments. I Awake, his solo debut, is an independent release. Recorded in New York and Jamaica, I Awake has a cast of dozens of session musicians and Shaggai colleagues who laid down a rich, solid vocal and instrumental accompaniment for the 12 tracks on the disk. A first-rate horn section can be heard throughout the 11 songs written or co-written by Ras Shaggai. A female group, the Daffodils, gets credit for excellent background vocals on several cuts. Keyboards, guitars and percussion amply and competently flesh out every tune. If you were around in the '80s and bought White Lion's album just because it had "Radar Love" on it, track 3 on I Awake might sound a little familiar to you. "When the Children Cry," the only cover in the collection, is one fine song and Ras Shaggai makes it his own. This jazzy version is a perfect showcase for his voice. Chevelle Franklin joins him with supporting vocals that give you chills. Add the delicate piano and flute background counter melodies that mesh with the drum and cymbal rhythm line and you end up with something that you can't help putting on CD repeat. If once isn't enough, Shaggai has included a second version, without Franklin, as a hidden track. I Awake is nothing if not filled with messages. Although all of the original songs are characteristically danceable, several -- "Reggae Risin'," "Dance Culture" and "Raw Riddem" -- are about the music itself. Reggae is the music of the Rastafarian culture and its tenets are in the lyrics of every song. "Pressure Cooker" and "Double Standard" speak of frustration and consequences caused by inequality and injustice. "Work Together," "Positive Way" and "Peace Inna the World" make suggestions for alleviating those negatives and living well despite them. The most unashamedly spiritual tracks in the group are "I Awake" and "Rastaman Intercession." If the former were the first thing everybody heard when he or she woke up, I'm sure there would be a statistically recordable decrease in A.M. road rage, office anxiety and general mean-spiritedness. Everybody needs a little reggae. Ras Shaggai's I Awake has proved to be a great place for me, definitely a former reggae virgin, to get a start on mine. - Rambles written by Valerie Fasimpaur published 30 November 2002 visit the artist's website www.rasshaggai.com [6]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Lance-O (#904) Date: Tue, 3 Dec 2002 17:23:34 -0700 From: LANCE-O Subject: REGGAE VIBES #345 GREETINGS MASSIVE!!!! Date: December 4 2002 Title: The prostitute Opepé presents: Raggaflá: The System Source informant: Lalo Fear: Novelties Discográficas The Prostitute Opepé RAGGAFLÁ presents: THE SYSTEM YOU-0033/YG9988: CD / DLP / Instrumental DLP The prostitute Opepé is without a doubt an atypical group. To begin they have the habit of playing the one it misleads alias with their different ones. Recently they were known as The Cuñaos of the Fonk and now that they make a viraje of the Hip Hop from their previous LP to the music Dancehall, they are made call Raggaflá. But but there of those alias and the anecdotic thing, this group of Majorca has to its backs an enviable trajectory. They were already the top-sellers and lead unquestionable of a time to first of the 90 in the one that there was an enormous bought underground of scale models of Hip Hop in Spain. In 1996 they have the occasion of being one of the first fichajes of this house and they already publish the classic "Vacations in the Sea" that the same as the scale models, it combines the goods Hip Hop and Dancehall and that mainly he/she gives place to a true hit underground: "Don Simón". Later on they published from an isolated way to their Lps the one that would be the but direct precedent of this new disk, the maxi "Battle of Cazalla" (I Win, 1998) in the one that n already experienced only with the Dancehall.Tras the parenthesis of the disk in solitary of the producing of the group, Biyi, with its Lp "The Machine of the Time" (Your you Lose, 1998), the group would return alias with a first, that of The Cuñaos of the Fonk with its LP "Chanelance" (I Win, 2000). Loaded with references 70's and 80's to the Iberian one, beyond the conceptual references, the style was clearly Hip Hop. It is maybe for this reason that already begun the game of nicknames, and being the objective was to make an album entirely of Dancehall, they chose other alias: Raggaflá. And what this of the Dancehall is it?, will you wonder Because well, the Dancehall is the music that razes in Jamaica, the cradle of the Reggae. With a predicament in the youth of the similar Caribbean island to that of the Rap among the youths in the U.S.A., the music Dancehall lifts passions with the Raggamuffin, a form of singing between the rapeado and the melodic intonation. The musical bases or Riddims, I eat there they are denominated, they are characterized by the marked rhythms and the lines of under very thick, suitable both for the dance. The final result oscillates among the proximity to the music it Dances and its more digital and more synthetic sonorities and the contributions of the Reggae but classic. But the Dancehall of Raggaflá, beyond stylistic questions, doesn't defraud the followers of the group as for the thematic one. The sense of humor is omnipresent and previous demand to he/she listens to it of the disk. The songs embrace topics that you/they go from the erotic-festival air of "I am Used Buyate" or "Ting (Elbady)" (very in the line of the Jamaican original Dancehall) to the political and polemic satire of "Faximan" or "Axe of Guerra" going by the extravagancy of dedicating a topic between two to the rivalry soccer teams in "Barça-Madrid". Other songs like "Frululú" or "Pancho López", without leaving aside the comicality characteristic of the whole album, they are able to leave a sediment of moral reflection and critic. And does the disk include the song of the moment of course also (of the autumn-winter?), "Josemari", a desternillante and catching topic that it speculates with the sugerente hypothesis that the government's president wants to leave the politics and to emigrate to Jamaica to be made Rastafari. On the whole, in spite of the variety in the topics of one or another cut of the album, there is a bottom line, contributing the necessary coherence with a regusto among the sourrest humor, the subtlest critic and the indispensable forcefulness here and there. The musical productions, of the maximum level, leave clear that these boys make the duties and they are to the last of the sounds that you/they send in the Caribbean island. But also, either from the orthodoxy or from the tendencies but new, those insular Raggaflá also contributes the exact dose of risk when to innovate and to contribute an own touch. "The System", once past the first itemized analysis, it is much more than the sum of a thematic one and some musical productions. It is, besides all this, a landmark in the biography of the group. Somehow this album is the closing of a cycle that is completed now with the one that has been the great pending subject of Opepé during a lot of time: A disk only of Dancehall, just as they demanded the fans. Quality and originality to same parts in this important occasion in the trajectory of this veteran group. The System" To read complete news... Title: I MANIFEST "ANOTHER CHEAT NOT" Source informant: Lalo Fear: Reggae News PEMOC (Specialized Journalists in Music, Leisure and Culture) I MANIFEST "ANOTHER CHEAT NOT" They run bad times for the music. When all the eyes are on in the phenomenon of the piracy, it seems that few have noticed the presence of the sharks. As any other popular artistic manifestation, the music is sustained on two columns: the art in itself and the business. Both they are needed. Without the business, the music would not arrive until people, there would not be industry of the disk neither rooms of concerts neither anything. Without music, without musicians, without composers, without interpreters, without talent, without art the business would not have anything after all, to sell. Today, however, the quadrature of the circle is achieving. We go of head toward a panorama in which the business occupies everything and the music has been knowingly substituted by a substitute that gives the I hit. We have listened the word "product" in the executives' of the music's heavy industry mouth already for a long time. They are right: most of what is published is only that, "product". Now, to the overwhelming marketing campaigns to throw artists prefabricados, or to the burden of the a hundred thousand songs of the summer, one has come to add a new sound assembly of difficult digestion: Operation Victory. In their second victorious year, this intrigue musician-television threat with giving to the fret with the little thing that it was minimumly of the operation sensible of the music in our country. What there is is what you leave: Operation Victory is not more than a pure and hard business, a television program in that hundred of millions of the currency are ventilated which is. Until there, all normal one. The perverse thing begins when the program transcends of its television limits to invade in the industry of the disk, when the music's presence is monopolized in television, when the market of the braveries is monopolized... If the public television had committed in a similar operation that affected to any other industry type substituting it with a sub-product own publicitado in terms of disloyal competition, and with the unavoidable crisis consequence in the sector and widespread discharges - I eat it is already happening - they would not have lacked the complaints of unions and associations of all type. The music, however, remains silent. And beyond the economic consequences of this operation of chrematistic victory, the enormous damage that is making to the music like art is. Therefore, from PEMOC we DENOUNCE: FIRST: The landing of the television means as omnipotent tool in the creation, promotion, distribution, commercialization and sale of the music. This maneuver orwelianamente dirigista goes guided to radically change the structures of the industry in benefit of the private business of some few ones, still to coast of destroying the necessary balance definitively between art and business in the music's environment. SECOND: The use of the enormous means of public television, that that we pay among all with our taxes, for the promotion without precedents of a strictly private business. We also denounce the monopolization of the one it "prevails it cheats" for the commercialization of these guided products, being outside of the "good" hours of screen any other music. THIRD: The mutation of the musical phenomenon through Operation Victory (without forgetting their clones: Popstars, etc), making pass as music of quality what you/they are not more than amateurs' exercises. Our sympathies will always be next to those that begin in the music's risky world, included the contestant of Operation Victory and similar, but never with those that orchestrate business ventajistas with the backdrop of their careers. ROOM: The falseamiento of the real mechanics of an artistic career, the deliberate censorship of musical goods, the cultural and aesthetic indoctrination, and the valuation of a certain "victory" type as unquestionable and unidirectional concept. FIFTH: We demand the music's consideration like a very cultural one and I don't eat a mere object of immediate profitability. Of non reconducirse this system of primary exploitation of the music's business, inside little the commercial imperative will have put an end to the vein of the real artists, and there will no longer be neither music neither I negotiate. SIXTH: We complain that people in the past involved in the creation of a popular culture they are lent to the coarsest tocomocho. It saddens us to check that discográficas and artists in exercise are aimed to give credibility to a degrading proposal for, respectively, to sell what you/they know garbage or to claw some minutes in it "prevails it cheats"; their complicity is a blemish of which you/they will finish being sorry. The immediate consequences of these commercial maneuvers supported by the enormous force of television are of fearing: disappearance of the minority musicians, sinking of the small companies discográficas, impoverishment of the catalogs of the "majors", reduction of the musical offer for the consumer, etc. SEVENTH: We make a call to the media - it presses, radio, Internet and television - so that he/she recovers the critical sense before this type of phenomena. The worn-out fallacy that it is "what the public demands" it can finish taking us for courses anything desirable. It is necessary to foment the approach for not succumbing obligatorily before the commercial imperative. Because to say care is not enough, PEMOC passes to the action. We invite to the fans of Operation Victory to explore other musical options, and we make them an offer loaded with future: WE CHANGE "YOU YOUR DISK OF OPERATION VICTORY FOR ONE OF TRUTH" We hope among the disks that we put to the public's disposition, each one finds some that interests him. Anyway, all are disks made by original artists, musicians whose value goes beyond the commercial maneuvers, of the illness of the gossip or of the hypnotic effect of the screen of the television. We ask you that, if you agree with this manifesto you adhere to him and you make it arrive to those people that you consider that it can be them of interest. It is a practically instrumental disk where Alberto's guitar prevails on the other instruments. The disk has been recorded in the studies that Alberto possesses in Valencia. For this recording he/she has leaned on in a series of musicians of an excellent quality, among those that are: Rafa Villalba and Jesus Gabaldón (battery and under respectively and also former-components of Socia l S.), Santi Navalón and Ricardo Winnows (incredible pianists of Jazz), Javier Withers them (keyboards), David Shepherd (trumpet), Parakeet Sambeat (saxo), Paco Bernal (percussions) and a long etc. The disk is composed of eleven courts, each one of an author (one of them signed by the own Alberto Tarín). The quality of the sound is impeccable, the selection of topics is very good and the production (that has counted with the help of Segio Monleón, member founder of Jah Gavels) it is also guessed right. In definitive, a disk that I find indispensable for the music's lover in general and of the reggae in particular. Also, he/she gives pleasure to see that here things are made independently with love of the commercial exit that you/they can have. God willing my words desires have taken place of listening what this guitarist has to say. Me that fortunately alive in Valencia, I have been able to him to get in the local rasta of the city: THE JUANITA CLUB (c / Lepanto 8). At the moment there is not a distribution at discográfica level. For who is interested in contacting with Alberto Tarín, this it is their electronic mail address: alberto_tarin@hotmail.com You won't be sorry. I guarantee it to you. To read complete news... I adore this month because this is the month we celebrate PEACE worldwide in our many different cultural ways. Although we are yet to achieve total world peace, at least it is a period we devote to making peace on earth the focus. Much gwarn fi true massive!!!! WHA!!!!! This week, Molin Music Recording Artist, Celebrity Oboist/Singer/Producer, Anna Fisher was a V.I.P. guest of Hollywood Mayor Johnny Grant's at the Hollywood Christmas Parade!!! I am not sure how many if any Reggae artists have ever had the priviledge of attending this gala event celebrating Hollywood's finest. I had a chance to hang with one of my favorite Jazz artist friends, guitarist and Tonight Show with Jay Leno Musical Director, Kevin Eubanks. http://www.kevineubanks.com Met many, many stars and saw lots of old friends (mostly politicos). Everyone loved my crushed velvet dress and matching red shoes! The reception was held at the Roosevelt Hotel. It was very cool to go as I'd just returned from a hommage to my Pilgrim Roots, Boston. Hadn't been home for eight years. It was beautiful to see my family again! My mom's finally found true love and we all love him...gives me hope there could still be someone for me. Jawge is in Austrailia this week with Fully Fullwood, Tony Chin, Santa Davis and Andrew Tosh as they tour Oz and New Caledonia!!! There was a beautiful article in OC County Weekly today about Kyng Arthur's new CD featuring Fully's band with guitarist, Dale Hauskins. http://www.ocweekly.com/ink/03/14/feedback-seigal.php Congratulations on another hot album! Had the chance to see Kyng Arthur in the flesh last night at Club One Love @ Club Lush located at 2020 Wilshire Bld. Santa Monica, CA. Hammer of Reggae Lounge @ St. Marks Venice Beach has rejuvenated the Reggae Club Scene on Wednesday night. It was a welcome event as West End stopped its Wednesday night Reggae Shows this past Summer. Last night Reggae Archivist, Journalist and Bob Marley Museum Curator, Roger Steffens was honored for his lifetime of achievement in Reggae Music. He was delighted that his name was spelled right and spoke on his exciting new book coming out on the life of Lee Jaffe ("The White Wailer) Joe Higgs always spoke so highly of Lee. Roger is very excited about his latest work and it will include some exclusive photos never seen before!! It was lovely to see Roger and Mary once again and they looked terrific!! Also in the house were, Jahva. A Los Angeles based Reggae band that has been together since high school back in the 70's. They have a new CD out which is sure to be irie! They were a tight, well rehearsed band with some excellent players! They loved the oboe sound and we will be working together again very soon. It was irie to see Trevi of Boom Shaka there as well. Odel Johnson had called when he came to town this week and mentioned that Boom Shaka was mastering their latest CD at Quality Clones. Jerry Sampas is the BEST!!! They's located at 6404 Hollywood Blvd. Suite 315 Hollywood, CA 90028. (323) 464-5853. I recommend them unreservedly for mastering and manufacturing. They have manufactured my first three CD's and I will produce my fourth album with them as well. Lately, I have been sitting in with some very famous Jazz musicians at some very famous venues here about town. I have performed three times since August at the Howling Monk with Drummer Winnard Harper (Dexter Gordon) from NYC, and John B. Williams Trio(Arsenio Hall Show, Nancy Wilson) , Ndugu Chancler (Drummer on "Billie Jean" MJJ), and Lew Mathes (Nancy Wilson) . I've also been jamming at BBKing's Live with Howard McCrary & Ralph Penland. In October, I sat in with Barbara Morrison and Ernie Andrews at Catalina's Bar & Grill. Barbara has been featuring me at Loews Santa Monica quite regularly. Currently I am rehearsing with Peobo Bryson's pianist, Ron Bishop for a concert on December 22 in Leimert Park. KKJZ has been playing my music quite regularly. Jawge and I are planning to record, Ira and George Gershwin's, "The Man I Love" when he returns from OZ next week. All good! This past month I played oboe (likely the first time on this stage) at the West Hollywood House of Blues at a fundraiser for Reggae Dancehall Artist, Simple Simon. It was irie to be on the same stage with Rankin' Joe, King Mackerel and Michael Palmer. The band was Pius and Higher Lion. We also had three shows with visiting artists, Calton Coffie (lead singer of Inner Circle), Screwdriver (AO!) , April, Seble Soloman and Sista Ambussh. We played Golden Sails (Long Beach), Hollywood Park Casino (Inglewood) and Coach House (San Luis Obispo). Sorry for the "I, I, I...." My friend Ron "Teddy Bear" Knight says that's all he hears from me...."I, I, I" He is burying his mother today at Inglewood Cemetery today at 11 am. Ron played for the Portland Trailblazers (2 years ) and Harlem Globetrotters for 10. I lost my father 10 years ago. It is hard to lose your parents but I think much harder to lose a child. Ron we'll pray for you as your lovely mother moves on to Zion. She produced a great son! New photos can be seen at my Yahoo site: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/annafisher on the photo page titled, "A Little Diversion" Yes, RAW massive give thanks for your continued love and support!
