Saw a great movie yesterday about life and freedom: Real Woman Have Curves. This movie was an award winner at the Sundance Movie Festival last year. About midway through the movie there is a boy-girl date scene that begins in a restaurant. The soundtrack is by an interesting sounding Spanish Reggae band and continues for a length of time. Does anyone know the name of the band and where they are based? If so please respond to me at . Thanks and RAWspect! --papa pilgrim RAW #1 [2]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Sista Irie (#23) Subject: Updated Rebel Salute line-up From: Sista Irie Date: Sun, December 22, 2002 3:31 pm Greetings once again RAW, I have been receiving lots of emails requesting posters for Rebel Salute. I don't have any currently but have contacted Tony to let him know the press is asking. I also noticed his press release does not have all the artists listed that his office gave me last week. Although any list can change all the way up to the day of the show, that is additions and cancellations, the full line-up as of a week ago reads like this: Tony Rebel, Luciano, Beres Hammond, Buju Banton, Capelton, Sizzla, Jah Mason, Jah Cure, George Nooks, Mykal Roze, Culture, Bob Andy, Spragga Benz, Abijah, Nadine Sutherland, Queen Ifrica, Anthony Selassie, Sugar Roy, LIJ AMLAK and Omar Silk (Garnet's brothers), LMS, Angel Chanta, Honeycomb, Lymie Murray. Blessings and Happy Holidays to you ALL! Rastafari Love, Sista Irie #23 [3]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Felecia Strickland (#1667) Subject: DubStation in Dallas, what a performance! From: MOJAMAICA@aol.com Date: Sun, December 8, 2002 4:54 pm Dub Station & SonBeam "Get it Together" I was introduced to this group DubStation some months back. But like usual, you can never feel the full effect of the Artist until you have seen them perform live. In this case, I had no idea of the treat that was to lie ahead of me. I've listened to Dub Station CD's provided by Kyle Russell. Unfortunately for me, I probably did not give it the full attention that it fully deserved in the beginning, not really being familiar with the group. Lesson learned! glasses are now off, and any Artist submitting material for review will get reviewed honestly. We have to remember that these artist put their heart in their work, the least we can do is show common courtesy and sample this work with an open mind. I was richly rewarded to be able to see DubStation with Dion Knibb and SonBeam perform at the Bob Marley festival in Dallas, Texas on September 21, 2002. They were one of the best performers at the festival. Dion Knibb, my first introduction to him, did his Kingston Jamaican heritage justice. Dion has a powerful voice and equal is his stage performance. For a minute there he reminded me of Chaka Demus and Pliers. Hmmm! a little Skatalites sound there. Get it Knibb! Anyone out their who knows Ska, will put that Knibb name together with the greatest performers of SKA, the Skatalites very own Lloyd Knibb offspring. Mere words cannot be enough introductions to this young Jamaican singer SonBeam hailing from the Parish of St. James Jamaica, Salt Springs Montego Bay. His style stretches broad across the Reggae spectrum from Lovers Reggae to Dancehall. SonBeam is certainly a singer to watch. He professes an exuberant spirit, when he sings. My favorite of his songs is "Center of Attraction" from his CD titled "Get it Together" I watched SonBeam perform this number along with DubStation, and only can say he have the females in the audience mesmerized! SonBeam is certainly the newcomer on the Reggae Block to watch. Sanchez has reigned supreme for many years, Sanchez, there's a new Jamaican swooner in town he's called SonBeam, no worry, there's enough room for two swooners! SonBeam makes Montegonian's proud! There are no slackers in the Dubstation Band, they can keep you moving from foot to foot as they lay down the Reggae vibes solidly, so check them. Barely topping last month's leader Shocking Murray, the two storm in alongside a number of selections on the Morgan family's NO TIME riddim. This red-hot, rootical beat on 71 Records also occupies the #4 and #6 spots, in the form of Jr.Kelly and Richie Spice. Another strong contender from LMS is currently bubbling under. Further elements of the roots are provided by Warrior King as well as by Capleton and Luciano on the TRIBAL WAR. Nelly Furtado is still "On The Radio" while Brian & Tony Gold find di gal gal "Irresistable". On the bashment-tip Rattler's DIESEL is still tough, entering at #3(Kiprich) and #9(Elephant Man), whereas Awful Music's G-STRING finally charts with Ward 21, Cobra & Keke Flint pon the title-track, and a nasty Bounty Killer/Angel Doolas combination called "Fitness". This slower-paced, heavyweight riddim has a hard time on the NM dancefloors but works well pon the airwaves, while the massive is cruising in their vehicles (which New Mexico is notorious for, in case you dunno). Elephant Man's second badman-anthem on Stonelove "Tall Up Tall Up" is making some waves (the third in the series "Sorrow To The World" done to the melody of Joy To The World is mashing up things already-just in time for X-Mas). The DIWALI returns with Wayne Wonder's "No Letting Go", which is said to be in rotation on a number of hip hop/r&b stations (but has not hit NM yet). Also in heavy rotation on commercial radio is Sean Paul and Busta Rhymes "Gimme The Light Remix". Sean Paul's brandnew album "Dutty Cup" reportedly sold 60 000 copies in the first week alone (!!!!). In NM Sean Paul has been one of the most requested dancehall artists for years-so big up suh! Beenie Man's party-anthem "Golden Bathtub" has dropped down to #16, while Cecile's "Push Up Your Hand" re-enters our chart. Brandnew at # 20 is a hardcore ganja-tune from the Ancient Monarchy aka Frisco Kid entitled "More Marijuana" on the hip-hoppy BOLLYWOOD riddim. Look out for Lenky's new MASTERPIECE riddim (which sounds smokin'), King Of King's hip-hoppin C4, and Richard "Call Me Shams" Browne for his B-Rich label TAI CHI. Also in the works is Black Shadow's follow-up to the hugely successful BUZZ riddim. It is called SURPRISE and sounds a lot like THE BUG. Also sounding hot are Massive B's recent update of the TEMPO, another more rootical selection entitled BALLISTIC AFFAIR, as well as a new series on the FULL UP on Buju's Gargamel label. A new label out of Oakland,California called HGS appears to be quite on the conscious tip, with artists such as Luciano,Anthony B,Jah Mason and Lutan Fyah under their wings. Next month we will also release our top 50 of the entire year 2002.Until such time: Don Martin P.S. Sugar Minott's talent shines bright on Wackie's classic set "Wicked A Go Feel It". "African Roots Act 3" is basically the dub counterpart of Sugar Minott's "Wicked Ago Feel It". Check out two great tunes over the "Blessings" riddim, performed by the late Vyris Edgehill and Trilla Jenna. Three notable efforts, including a combination tune with Damian "Junior Gong" Marley, can be found on Caribbean Pulse's latest cd-single. The much promising Shango XXX makes a serious impression on a 10" single, which furthermore features notable efforts by Leroy Gibbons and Chris Jay.
