Combining serious artists of varying styles is always inspiring, but this show was definitely a beautifully spiritual experience for performers and audience alike! The show opened with DJ Rebel of Ruff Cutt Sound spinning some heavy skanking songs getting the crowd off their butts and out on the dance floor. The live show began with young star, Tridat of the Universal Kings. Tridat runs a blend of conscious Reggae Dancehall and Urban Hip Hop and had assistance from his partner G.I. He was a brilliant icebreaker and helped warm up the system for the next act, Dread-I another spiritual brother of Hispanic and Native American Roots who with his quartet chanted a mezmerizing song prepping us for the main act. >From the top, "OBONE" played Anna Fisher's original, "Capture the Spirit" featuring Anna on lead vocals & oboe, Empress Nzinga on backing vocals, Phil Ranelin on trombone, Lesterfari on guitar, Bassie (Ray Felix) on Bass, Duane Laskey (keyboard), Shakaman (drums) and Rootsmon (Nyabinghi drum). The crowd was back on their feet! Next it was, "Song For My Father" by Horace Silver featuring the oboe, piano & trombone with the BoomShaka members accompanying. Next Shakaman dropped the shuffle beat to Anna's anthem, "Break the Silence-Stop the Violence" Next Anna mentioned that she had been single the past 10 years and although she'd accepted many applications, held numerous interviews and even a few auditions, she is still waiting for "The Man I Love" by George and Ira Gershwin. Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" was next. With audience singing strong. English horn was featured on Anna's "Mentors Take Your Places" with both Anna and Nzinga on lead vocals as well. Then the crowd went wild with the Jamaican Riddim, "Death In The Arena" which Anna remamed., "Life In The Arena" an instrumental number featuring Anna and Phil. Props and credits were handed out just before Carole King's, "You've Got A Friend". Next Phil Ranelin was featured on Miles Davis' "Solar" followed by Freddie Hubbard's, "Little Sunflower" (Phil was Freddie's sideman for years!) ending his virtuoso stint with his own exotic and erotic original, "Close Encounters of the Very Best Kind". Next Rootsmon took the mics with his drum and his hearty and rich vocals on "Africa, We Want To Go". Legendary Jamaican Dancehall Artist, Simple Simon was so taken by Rootsmon that he managed to take us to higher heights as he joined in for this moving song! Simon has been under Chemotherapy treatment for throat cancer, so hearing his delivery and strength has the room in ecstacy. His crooning honey vibes soared over the club spreading the true message of Christmas....the Sprit of Giving as his goal! Their energy got every last soul to their feet this time and primed for Chestcott's dynamic entrance on his original, "Free Spirit" followed by "Love Is A Law" from his upcoming CD with a final word..."Give Peace A Chance". The crowd stayed till the end and skanked again to DJ Rebels mix of Shaka Demus and Pliers' "Murder She Wrote". It was a splendid time had by all! We were amazed we drew the crowd we did in less than two weeks notice. (less than three weeks not recommended) However, the love and support was evident and true spirit of giving was clear throughout the night. Special thanks goes out to those who helped promote, especially James Janisse at KKJZ (KJAZZ) for listing it on your hotline and telling the massive for us. Big Up Props to Barbara Barabino of KKBT's (The BEAT 100.3) "Get Up, Stand Up" Show for your help, Chuck Foster of KPFK's "Reggae Central with Chuck Foster", Huge Kudos to Reggae Russell of Reggae Nucleus Magazine and AO! Records for diligently posting the event in the So. Cal. Reggae Nucleus Calendar. (Russell, you are definitely the living evidence of 'need something done, ask a busy person'!!) Special thanks to Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide for announcing my events, I love RAW!!!! The calls are coming in from all over but these we know promoted the show for sure. We give thanks to those who although were unable to attend spread the word and sent others. Paul Higgs, the late Joe Higgs' son came out with friends of Marjel's. Jawge and I'd met him in Kingston, JA at his dad's memorial. You'll hear more of him soon as he is now drummer for "Reggae Rock" and has an upcoming CD of his own. King Oji of the King's Chamber took over the dance floor from the second he arrived until it ended!! Much love to the Princesses, Jendayi (for Lesterfari) and Monique (for Anna) and Jendayi's cousin Carefa for working the door. I actually met Lesterfari when our two daughters both graduated 8th grade from 32nd Street USC/Visual and Perfroming Arts Magnet School. Trevy Felix (leader of BoomShaka) thanks for your presence at all rehearsals and subbing for Shakaman when he went to do Jr. Reid's gig in Chicago. Phil Ranelin, loved working with you and thanks for lighting the fire under me to make it happen. Much love to club owners Carl and Judy Gentle for working with us and keeping the club warm/hot all night! DJ Special...I know how you got your name, thanks for helping to promote and sharing your resources expecially your Graphic Artist Carl Allen for producing the gorgeous full-color flyers (with changes galore) on the fly!!! Thanks to Jawge of Jawge and the Unknown Band for assistance on arrangements and the latest album. Big Up to Ras Jimi Jaimin for your love and support! Kevin Eubanks, Bandleader and Virtuoso Guitarist of Jay Leno's Tonight Show many thanks to you for allowing me to publicize my runnings at your stimulating website and for giving me the inspiration and support to take my music to the next level though your live performance with Will Calhoun of Living Color and your elevating new album, "Shrine" (In Soul) which is the best!!! Flutist Hubert Laws, Singer Barbara Morrison, Bandleader Howard Mac, Bassist John B. Williams, Drummer Ralph Penland and Percussionist Leon "Ndugu" Chancler, you continue to guide me...For Dion, how could I forget you...you're the best, man! Without Wayne "Digital" Cleaves of Digital Sound we wouldn't have had a show at all!!! Special thanks to my family for not making me feel guilty when I constantly put the music and the message first, your unconditional love and support is what keeps me going! The band members gave more than any artist could ever ask for and I was truly blessed! BoomShaka will appear at Pershing Square in Downtown Los Angeles at the Skating Rink on New Years' Eve Day from noon to 2pm. Locals will not want to miss them! Took my son Lincoln last year and had the time of our lives skating and skaking to the sweet, sweet Reggae Music!! Please contact them through their website and Shakaman at Jubillee Studios (323) 733- 9452. OK, you'd think this was a Grammy speech that'd gone on too long (and it probably has) but I truly couldn't have done this without the love of these individuals. God Bless you all! Happy 2003!! *[Ed note, from Anna]: I forgot to mention that Nzinga sang Marcia Griffith's, "I Shall Sing" in the first half of the show. She and I had worked recently with Calton Coffie (lead singer of Innercircle) and Screwdriver in three shows to benefit Simple Simon's medical expenses. Five months ago I got a wild hair and decided to start an internet radio station, and it's already grown into a serious hobby. Although it's still pretty small scale by the standards of terrestrial radio, as of today we've had some peak days that approached 400 listeners, have had over 6600 total listener hours in the past 30 days, and rank #268 out of over 40,000 stations on Live365 (and just moved up to #8 in reggae). And, we were recently an "Editor's Station Pick." I sincerely mean it when I offer thanks to everybody who has helped, whether it be with promotional music, website links, technical help, any and everything. I started this with little more than a love of roots reggae, and knowledge-wise very little else. In the New Year look for more album reviews on the website as well as vinyl rips from more obscure roots albums from the past, and a continued commitment to big up music from modern artists.
