Wrom: KHJYFMYXOEAIJJPHS Date: Tuesday, December 31, 2002 4:40 AM Greetings, RAWspect and Happy New Year to all RAW members! since Supertyphoon Pongsona devastated this small island on Dec 8, my RAW runnings have come to a resounding halt. Today is the 23rd day without power and despite the presence of FEMA and the Red Cross, who are doing incredible things to help us recover from this disaster, we are still living in quite primitive conditions. I am lucky to have a bit of running water but most on Guam do not. The sound of generators fill the air for those lucky enough to be able to afford them, and the gas (or diesel) with which to run them. So many are now quite literally homeless, and living in shelters or tents. Again I am quite lucky to have a roof over my head. 32% of the island has had power restored as of today, but I expect to be without for an extended period, due to the area in which I live. The RAW Board was in the middle of many crucial discussions when this typhoon hit us for more than 10 hours with winds of 185 mph and up. Knowing I was most likely to be without electricity for an extended period, I asked them to carry on in my absence, and to make decisions without my input. I know that they are doing exactly that from the readings I've done on the few occasions when I've been able to get on-line on a friend's computer. To those of you who have sent in renewals or new memberships, please be patient and I will get packets to you as soon as I am able to do so. To those of you who are due for renewal in January, please do not wait for a renewal notice from me to send in your dues. check the back of your membership card, and if you are due in January (or even February), please take the initiative to send in your renewal without a notice. Dues can be sent to me at RAW, c/o Tom Pearson, 911 Marine Drive, Tumon Bay GUAM 96913 USA. Please include any changes to your current listing. To those who have recently sent in changes in email addresses, please send a message to Eric at raw1418@triad.rr.com Let him know what your old address was, and what the new address is, and he will make note of the change in his mailing list, so you can continue to receive "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" For those of you who are still sending items for "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" directly to me, please be aware that such news should be re-directed to Nancy Lewis (#72) at nanlewis@bellsouth.com My alloted time on this computer is now at an end, so once again I wish all of the RAW family a Happy New Year, and let's make 2003 the year in which RAW really has some impact. It takes a revolution to make a solution." Bob Marley Well, I could call it a new years resolution, but I think revolution is more appropriate, since reggae music is the evolution of social and political revolutions. Right now, I would like to make a suggestion and throw it out for discussion to see if there is any interest. I am suggesting, RAW pick a 'charity' and work throughout the year to help this charity in whatever small or meaningful way we can. Mikey General and I have been working on ideas for the Jamaica National Children's Home, which is an orphanage in Mona outside of Kingston which houses children without families, as well as children with mental and physical disabilities (Tegwyn Special Unit). One can only imagine the social stigma and medical challenges these children face. the parent UK organization cut off funding in 1999 and since that time, the home is dependant on government funding, church and personal donations. In times like these, money is very scarce. A few months ago, a few soundsystem dj's in Austin, held a benefit dance and we raised nearly $900 to help the home buy a much needed washing machine and nearly enough for a freezer (needed desparately to store food). In this RAW family, we have artists, dj's, club owners, labels, etc. Each of us, or those who are interested could pick one thing to do a year, in the name of RAW unity, to help a designated charity. Obviously, not everyone could do something every year, but there are enough of us, who could commit to some small event or personally contribute, to help a charity once a year. (think what a $1 a person could do) and the signigicance this could be for RAW as an organization promoting the ethical advancement of reggae music. The actual money may be small, but the effect can be large in helping someone in need. If this idea takes seed, I would love to suggest this first year, we consider the Jamaica National Children's Home, working with Mikey General, who is livicating a portion of his upcoming cd "Exalt Jah" to the project and other artists and dj's who want to make a difference. For more on the charity, please check http://groups.yahoo.com/group/rasmikey/ Please let me know how everyone feels about the idea of committing as a group a RAW charity of the year..Blessed Love, More Love.
