Massive, Simple Simon Needs Your Help Greetings R.A.W. Massive, Reggae Artist Simple Simon has been challenged recently with his battle against throat cancer. The cancer had been in remission but has recently caused him to be hospitalized and he has lost more than 50 pounds. He called me tonight and asked me to play, "Death In The Arena" one of his favorites that I'd played at one of his shows with Fully's band to open for Frankie Paul earlier this year. Please mark your calendar and try to make some or all of these following performances if you are anywhere near the area. If you'd like to make a donation but cannot attend I'll post address information tomorrow. Meanwhile, DJ's Simple Simon has asked you to please spin, Sweep Over My Soul" by Luciano and his own version of "Amazing Grace" from his "Real Man" CD on the Redemption Records Label. In addition to giving thanks to the DJ's he'd like to recogize DJ White Lightening and Q-Bwoi for their support in this endeavor. Love and Peace. Thurs. Greetings from Christafari and Lion of Zion Entertainment! It has been an unusual year for the band and label as we have been slowly readjusting from the turmoil of last year and working towards our future and vision. On the Christafari front, we had a few changes in our line-up last year, and the addition of two awesome female background vocalists that give the band a face-lift and add a Marley-esque/I-threes vibe to this clever concoction that we call Christafari. After taking some necessary time off, we played a few pick up dates in the last year including a 9-11 fundraiser in Manhattan, Day 7 with Greg Laurie (broadcast on television throughout the world, England (with Kirk Franklin), Jamaica, Mexico, and the last dates of our five year WordSound&Power tour in New Orleans, Alabama, and Miami. In January of this year I was invited Trinidad to teach a seminar on the music industry and how to produce Christian reggae/world music. It was during this visit that I fell in love with the beautiful island and its unique African/Indian/Caribbean culture. I was introduced to a slew of artists, and taken to a whole-heap of recording studios and various radio stations. It didn't take long for me to realize that this island was a hot-bed for talent and clearly the new epicenter for Christian reggae. In the following months I visited Trinidad and Tobago three more times. Returning after each trip with a musical masterpiece to release on the Lion of Zion Entertainment label. The first was Sherwin Gardner's "Leaning"--possibly the best gospel album of the year. If you haven't yet picked up a copy, you don't know what you are missing. "Leaning" was just released in September. (Scroll down for more on Sherwin). Lion of Zion's second Trinidad-based release was "Soca Baptism." Following the success of "Africa Anointed" released in April, we decided once again to take a side step from the reggae genre and give our listeners a taste of a new culture. Years ago I had fallen in love with soca music and had always hoped to some day release a gospel soca compilation. Following my second seminar (this time in Tobago), I realized the fruit was ripe for the picking. With the help of my dear friends Don Juan Acosta, and the Blackman family (whose father invented soca), I was able to compile the first definitive gospel soca compilation to ever be released in America. This project was also released in September.(Scroll down for more on our "Soca Baptism" release). Following our attendance at the GMA conference in Nashville and the Expolit conference in Miami this past Spring, we decided to act in faith and begin recording the next Christafari album.......long overdue. The plan was a unique one to say the least and would take me to three states and two countries. It began in Miami where, locked for a week in a motel room, I sorted through the sixty cassette tapes containing all my ideas for hundreds of songs I had written over the last few years. Then I brought in Ace Winn, one of my writing partners to help cement my ideas to specific chord structures and arrangements. Ironically, some of the best songs from this woodshedding session ended up being those that took the least amount of time to write but dealt with hard issues and personal experiences I had recently faced. It was a very cathartic and therapeutic time for both of us. The next stop was Trinidad where, working with Isaac Blackman and his family (also known as the Love Circle), we spent 40 days recording a rough demo of every song to be considered for the next Christafari release. It was in these all night sessions that a new sound of Christafari began to develop with the help of Isaacs’s unique arrangements and interpretations. It was also during this visit to Trinidad that Lion of Zion Entertainment signed new artist, Tiko and Gitta, a powerful gospel reggae/dancehall duo that has often been compared to the likes of Tanto Metro and Devonte, the Born Jamericans, or even Chaka Demus & Pliers. Tiko deejays humorous lyrics with more precision than Beenie Man and Gitta sounds like a blend of Sizzla and Yami Bolo with a dash of Junior Kelly. Their new project titled "Royal Priesthood," was just released on the Lion of Zion Entertainment label and hits stores (including our webstore) on October 29th. (Scroll down for more on Tiko & Gitta and "Royal Priesthood.") After my session in Trinidad, it was time to begin recording the final version of Christafari's 2003 release that will be titled "Gravity." I recorded the band for a month straight at the Junction studio in Nashville TN, before coming back home to Los Angeles, CA to complete the album. The recording should be finished in November and Christafari’s fifth original studio recording titled "Gravity" will drop in the Spring of 2003. In the meantime, "Dancehall Baptism Chapter Two," the second installment of our continuous series will be in stores on November 19th, and "To The King," a unique Reggae/dancehall praise album will be in stores on January 28th, 2003. More information of the aforementioned releases is included below. Until our next update—stay strong in Christ and never compromise, Mark Mohr Christafari/Lion of Zion Entertainment __/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ LION OF ZION ENTERTAINMENT presents........ TIKO & GITTA "ROYAL PRIESTHOOD" .... a brand new release now available in stores and online directly from our secure webstore at http://www.lionofzion.com where you can check out audio clips before you buy. Artist Biography and Album Description: “Royal Priesthood” is the debut album from Tiko and Gitta, gospel reggae’s premier combination duo. This project represents the gritty sound of reggae and launches some of the most creative ad unique vocal deliveries ever recorded in this genre. Based out of the twin-island country of Trinidad and Tobago, Tiko and Gitta have been singing together for over three years, ministering at various churches and events throughout the Caribbean with their sweet contemporary blend of Reggae and Dancehall music. Born in the Caribbean Island of St.Vincent, (and now residing in Trinidad), Lyndon (Tiko) Sterling delivers the vibrant dancehall flavor to the duo. At age nine Tiko gave his life to the Lord, and by 16 he had began his musical journey while he was in school chanting over dancehall beats for his friends. Tiko has been aptly named ‘Flow Master’ by his friends because he has one of the quickest flows heard in dancehall today. It only takes a few measures in a song in order for him to explode and spread his intricate rhyme patterns all over the place. Using lighthearted comedy and clever storytelling, Tiko manipulates his energetic, wild, and original flow to bring across very serious spiritual subjects. Although many of the tracks on “Royal Priesthood” rightfully dwell in the dancehall arena, it’s the culture of reggae that permeates the atmosphere when the microphone is grabbed by Gitta. With a solid vocal tone similar to the likes of Sizzla and Yami Bolo, Gitta, born Denton Peschier, is the soul of this team. While the second half of this pair may initially appear shy, get him behind a guitar and his spirit soars, hence his name Guitar Dan (“Gitta” for short). Raised in Trinidad, this humble and gentle spirit ignites when he has a mic in hand with his signature vocals that sail across the choruses, perfectly contrasting Tiko’s fire spitting raps. These two compliment each other in such a unique way, creating an unbelievably intense force to be reckoned with. In contrast with Tiko’s fiery chatting, Gitta picks up his guitar and delivers some cooled down singing for the reggae purists, comforting those who idly twist away at their dreadlocks. With a diverse sound touching on roots reggae, dancehall, and a dash of hip hop, this versatile project is packed with 17 songs and sure to suit various tastes. This is a fun, yet thought provoking release by the most promising vocal team in gospel reggae. Tiko and Gitta are a dynamic twosome with lyrical fire power that pierces the soul, provokes thought, and draws the listener to the knowledge, awareness, peace, love, power and majesty of Jesus Christ. Ministry Statement: Packed with modern-day musical parables and cleverly woven stories, Tiko and Gitta use the genres of reggae and dancehall to speak to this generation in relevant way without compromise in sound or spirit. “Our inspiration comes from Christ, who was the most lyrical man to ever walk the face of this earth. We intend to follow in his footsteps.”—Tiko & Gitta __/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ Also Available from Lion of Zion Entertainment: SHERWIN GARDNER "LEANING" Writer Stan North at GospelFlava.com wrote: " Leaning is one of, if not the best, Gospel projects to come from the islands in 2002. Some good advice would be to wake up and become very familiar with Sherwin Gardner." http://www.gospelflava.com/reviews/sherwingardner.html More about Sherwin: Born and raised in Arima, Trinidad, Sherwin Gardner began singing at a young age and quickly learned to integrate his faith with the contemporary music of his Caribbean island. The result is a uniquely woven tapestry of various urban sounds and Caribbean cultures with no-compromise lyrics and sound doctrine. A bestseller in Trinidad and Tobago, Sherwin is by far the most proficient and versatile deejay/vocalists in the Caribbean gospel arena. Stylistically diverse, he covers soca, roots reggae, hardcore dancehall, hip hop, jamoo, and techno with smooth transitions and amazing fluency. Each song includes a signature style and sound that is undeniably Caribbean and unquestionably Sherwin. In his powerful songs of worship, Sherwin’s sweet melodies encourage and uplift your spirit. On Leaning, this musical ambassador is armed with an arsenal of guest appearances including former secular soca sensation Jadee plus Monty G, Love Circle, Christafari, Mr. Lynx, and Shizelon. __/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ "SOCA BAPTISM," (VARIOUS ARTISTS) As Lion of Zion Entertainment's Dancehall Baptism - Chapter One introduced the world to the powerful genre of Jamaican gospel dancehall, we now take you on a trip to a separate set of islands in the southeast Caribbean--Trinidad & Tobago--for an introduction to soca. Renowned for its magnificent carnivals, calypso, and this century's only musical invention, the steel pan, Trinidad & Tobago has already shared its sounds with the world through soca songs like Arrow’s “Hot, Hot, Hot.” Now, in typical Lion of Zion Entertainment fashion, it's time to baptize soca for Jesus Christ! If reggae music is the heartbeat of the Caribbean, then soca is the pulse. Created by the late Ras Shorty I in 1973, “Soca” is short for the “soul of calypso.” It is a unique hybrid of Caribbean instrumentation and bangra/chutney beats, bridging the two major ethnic groups of Trinidad and Tobago--the African and the East Indian. Layered over the driving kick drum and bubbling bass lines are syncopated up-tempo chutney beats accentuated by militant snare stabs. These sounds can get any crowd moving and cause a sea of people to wave their rags--a Trinidadian favorite! Packed with seventeen tracks, Christ is never absent from this album. Each artist is committed to spreading the good news of Jesus Christ over their contagious, sanctified beats. With powerful music and Word-filled lyrics, Lion of Zion Entertainment has once again highlighted a musical genre that can travel the world with plenty to offer both dancer and listener alike. “Soca Baptism” presents a generous sampling of this Caribbean music for the mind, body, soul, and spirit. __/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/__/ Pick up your copies today and don't forget to check out the other 80+ gospel reggae, dancehall, African, & world music albums for sale at our secure webstore! A big part of our success is the product- the music. There is so much great roots music out there. We are currently featuring about 50 R.A.W. artists in our playlists, mixing in new releases with classic roots and everything in between. I very much appreciate all of the artists and their representatives who have been so helpful as I get this station off the ground. Despite being very technologically-challenged I have now set up the "studio" to allow me to rip vinyl to mp3, so we should be able to expand our playlists to include singles and older LP's that have not been reissued on CD. I am also on the verge of finally having the website completed. One of the main things I will be doing on this website is reviewing underexposed albums. As always, artists may contact me about promotional copies or purchases of rootical sounds. And we continue to seek artists interested in recording station ID spots- please contact me if interested. Big Ups to R.A.W.! This is a great resource, and a great community of friends.
