Must apologize for the lateness of this summary report. The new school year has brought new responsibilities, and I've had almost 20 hours per week of new duties added to my schedule with a new boarding program being implemented at school. Doesn't give me much "free" time to work at the computer any longer, since I'm at school Mon thru Thurs til 5.30 pm, then on study hall duty three nights from 7-10 pm, and on general duty from 5 pm til midnite on Fridays. The report below was written in snatches of free time over the course of the past few weeks. 9/18 Think I'm gonna have to do this in stages...a few minutes here and a few minutes there, otherwise I will never get this report done. Back is mending but still giving me trouble, and cold has moved into my chest (really have to quit smoking one of these days!), but life goes on and duties don't take vacations. Thursday... Got into SF airport after two long flights (4 hours and 11 hours) and a four hour layover in Tokyo, got a rental car (forgot it was Labor Day weekend and I should have reserved ahead of time, but managed to get a vehicle finally!). Drove down to the Hansens to pick up all the items for the RAW booth, then on to San Jose airport to pick up Joanie, who was arriving from Alb'q. We then headed on down to Monterey, found our hotel, checked in, and headed over to the fairgrounds to find the Monterey Room. Ran into Clinton Fearon and Barbara Kennedy right away, and the good vibes started from that moment. Mary Kirk was there from the start, ready available for assistance, as she was throughout the festival. Joanie and I got the RAW booth set up with the help of some bredren who were hanging around. Kyle arrived shortly afterward and helped us finish setting up and getting the R.A.W. info, R.A.W. T-shirts and R.A.W. CDs set up. He had a large supply of Dub Station CDs with him, and made those available for new memberships. While we were doing this, Wendy Russell and Leigh Crutchfield helped out, especially with getting the R.A.W. backdrop put up for display. Native Elements was doing a sound check. Humble Soul was in the house, as were the members of Red Di, and it was a good feeling to be surrounded by R.A.W. members. Ras Midas come over with Dani Spencer who was the first new RAW membership to come in over this weekend. There were many people coming over asking about R.A.W. while we were setting up. Got our festival tickets from Kym Hansen (as well as a great red gold and green cover for the Booth canopy that we used all weekend) and distributed the tickets between Joanie, Kyle and myself. The three of us, along with Leigh Crutchfield and Ras Midas, took turns manning the booth that evening. At one point Kyle sat in while Mary took us to see where the R.A.W. booth was going to be set up. The Monterey Room was situated next to the main stage, called the One World stage, and there is then a long pathway through a beautiful grassy area with lots of trees, that would eventually be the vendor area, followed by an area called the food court. The second stage was situated roughly where the crafts vendors area turned into the food vendors area. This stage was called the Robert Brown stage, so named after one of the original founders of MBRF, who passed on during one of its first years in existence. This stage would be the place where most R.A.W. artists actually performed, and it was made clear to me at that point why it could not be re-named the "R.A.W. Stage" (altho why that could not have been explained earlier is beyond me). Keep walking through the food vendors, make a left turn three quarters of the way down to the end, and you came to an area with picnic tables under large beautiful trees, and there was the "R.A.W. Stage". To the left of the stage, was a small man made pond, with a wooden island and walkway dab smack in the middle of it. This is where it was intended for the R.A.W. booth to be situated. My first impressions were 'Geez, this is about as far away from everything as we could possibly be, and being in the middle of a pond with only a narrow walkway as access will really cut down on the number of people who might check out the booth." In addition, this small island was the source of power for the adjacent R.A.W. Stage, and was therefore covered with heavy electrical wires, which did not seem safe for me, as the R.A.W. Booth would have had to be directly on top of them. The walkway started out with a type of platform that was roughly square in shape, and by eye-balling the dimensions, it looked like the R.A.W. Booth might fit perfectly in that space. So we made a change in plans at that point, to put the Booth in that space, rather than on the island itself. I was still a bit perturbed about the location, until I turned around and saw that we were directly behind the main entrance to the fairgrounds, and the R.A.W. Booth would be the very first thing concertgoers would see as they entered. Once I realised this, I was very pleased about our location, and as it turned out, this placement really worked out well in terms of access to the public and visibility to anyone who entered the fairgrounds. Things were starting to warm up, and the 7 o'clock start time came and went, altho Red Di took the stage not too long after that. I am not a good judge of crowd attendance, but I would say that at any time during the evening, there were not more than 100 people in attendance, and many of these were associated with the festival itself as crew members, or performers. Mary introduced the band and did many announcements throughout the evening about R.A.W. and our mission. The Booth was located in the rear of the room, and got quite a bit of traffic throughout the evening, given how low the attendance was. Red Di's fine performance was followed by Native Elements who did a great set, and Humble Soul then came on stage to be backed by Native Elements. The vibes were very good and the audience seemed to be having a good time. It was an all ages venue, so there were lots of pickneys in attendance. Clinton Fearon & BBB closed out the evening with a typically amazing performance, but by this time of the evening, the crowd had dwindled down to maybe a dozen folks. Apparently no local advertising was done in surrounding towns, although Lawrence and Kym told me later that Andre had promised to do so. Speaking of Andre, he was not very visible, if he was in attendance. I think I may have spotted him outside the entrance-way once during the evening. I don't know how many paid entrances there were, but it certainly was not very many. Definitely nowhere near the number needed to pay for expenses, so I am certain that the evening was a major financial loss in that respect. After the performances, Kyle, Joanie and I packed up the times in the RAW booth, but left the structure up for moving the next morning. the RAW backdrop was also left hanging in the Monterey Room as we were assured that the security crew would be sleeping there that evening. We packed up the car with everything else and headed back to the hotel, where I promptly crashed, not having slept in over 48 hours. 9/30 .....haven't had any chance to complete this report since the 18th...too busy! Friday morning..... Headed over to the Monterey Room to set up the Booth again. Around 10.00 all of us were ready to begin, but there were very few people around. Provided for us was a continental breakfast of coffee, tea, fruits and pastries, but Andre was nowhere to be seen. There was nobody on his side there to collect any tickets at the door. Around 10.15, we organized a few chairs in a small circle and at 10.20, I decided we should get started. There were maybe a dozen people in attendance, and we followed the schedule I'd outlined in advance. First a brief overview of RAW and its history and mission. I introduced the Board members in attendance, and discussed their roles and responsibilities. Kyle spoke for himself, and I had Evan go over the website capabilities, based on a list I'd been given previously via email from Gary. We talked about current volunteer needs, and a few members in attendance talked about R.A.W. networking. Lawrence Hansen talked about how R.A.W. has been influential in his business. A few more people showed up during our discussions, Ras Midas and Ras Michael joined us, and Ras Michael talked for some time. Around 12.40, the other speakers for the afternoon had arrived, and altho we had not had Evan discuss the by-laws, we broke for a short intermission. By this time there were maybe two dozen people in attendance, and still no one collecting tickets at the door. Friday afternoon..... Around 12.50, Mary asked me if I would introduce the speakers for the afternoon. I felt very pressured and uncomfortable doing so on such short notice, and asked Tony Moses if he would be willing to act as MC for the rest of the afternoon. So at 1.00, I introduced Tony and let the rest of the afternoon proceed. A couple other R.A.W. members have written about the speakers and their talks, so I don't think I need to go into those here, except to say that they were inspirational, motivating, controversial, and entertaining, and it's a damn shame there weren't more people there to hear them. At best, I'd say there were maybe 30-40 people in the audience. We finally ended around 5.00 as scheduled, and there was food on sale for those who were willing to buy a delicious plate of Jamaican cooking. Apparently there was nothing planned for the evening, altho I seem to remember there being something on the original schedule discussed with us. It would have made much more sense to have the Thursday night showcase on Friday evening, and apparently everyone in Andre's camp had also felt the same way and tried to convince him of this, without success. So we broke down the R.A.W. booth once again, and headed out for some dinner, where Joanie, Kyle, Evan and I had a meeting about bylaws at the local Denny's. The actual festival pretty much runs itself. There were a few snags...no printed program for one, but Mary had given me one of the very few printed copies of the two day schedule and we posted it and the booth's bullerint board, which meant that we had a great number of visitors who came by for such information. We ended up getting great exposure as a result. The location of the Booth also was a great advantage as it was the first thing festival goers saw as they entered the fairgrounds. We had many many inquiries, and altho we only gained a dozen or so new memberships during those days, there were a large number of applications taken. All in all, I'd say this was a great opportunity for public exposure of R.A.W. I had many people come and tell me they'd seen our booth at festivals in the past, but never really knew what our mission was, and after this festival it was now clear to them. Many others gave thanks for providing the concert schedule info. MBRF is a great site for a future conference, but if we were ever to consider piggy-backing on MBRF again, I would insist that we be allowed to do our own organising of R.A.W.'s portion of the event. It was ridiculous to have the showcase on Thursday night, with nothing happening Friday night. In fact, seeing as how Friday is a workday for most, but that Monday is a holiday, I'd suggest having meetings on Monday and a showcase Monday night. I don't know why this wasn't considered in the first place. I think Andre was intent on having a 4 day event (and those plans flopped due to that lack of advertising in local areas). Whew! Think I'm done here. Would be willing to answer any questions anyone has. Just send 'em on. El más recomendable es "Get up your foot". Entretanto degustad en Up Beat Radio nuestro cocktail. Consulta nuestra programación en www.up-beat Leer noticia completa...
