Which do the people prefer? Roots reggae or dancehall? ROOTS REGGAE PUT Jamaica 'pon top', it is said. In recent times, though, the 'top-a-top' status of this genre has come under scrutiny by some who think it is stuck in the past. However, it is being suggested by supporters of roots reggae that the genre in its purest form is still the music with the message. The popularity of roots reggae locally has declined somewhat in recent times with dancehall, the 'child', replacing it as the preferred choice, especially among the younger generation. The roots genre is said to differ from dancehall in that it uses more live instruments, or simulations of live instruments. Dancehall, on the other hand, uses mainly computerised equipment to generate its music. Dancehall songs are generally done at a faster pace whereas the roots songs are usually slower. Apart from this, roots reggae, while enjoying respect as 'foundation' music, has been bashed by its critics. One of the criticisms levelled against the genre has been that while other genres have changed their style of delivery and beats, roots reggae has remained same. "The tempo has stepped up but the message is still the same. The beats haven't changed much and the creators of the rhythms could add a bit more variety," opined upcoming artiste Natural Black. Natural Black -File photos Black, who is known for songs such as Bad Mind, Never Leave You Lonely and Songs With Feelings, points out that a change in the genre could probably lure more youths to the genre due to the interest the change would bring. He maintained, though, that the message should remain. While it has been criticised by some, defenders of the genre have refuted these claims. "People go for the music they hear, but the nowadays music lacks longevity. The roots reggae music is soothing so it will last," suggests veteran entertainer Coco Tea. "The younger generation may gravitate towards the hype but when they hear and find out about roots reggae they prefer it." Coco Tea, who is known for hits such as Bus Out A Hell and She Loves Me Now, points out that while critics may say the music lags behind dancehall, it is still preferred over its 'child' in most places. He noted that in Europe roots reggae and not dancehall 'ruled the dance'. "Europeans grow up on roots reggae," he said. "They don't have the appreciation for dancehall as they have for reggae. People in Europe don't concentrate on the beat alone, but the message as well." Producer Calibud agrees that most places outside of Jamaica still prefer roots reggae as opposed to dancehall. "People in Trinidad accept it more," he said. "It's because of what people hear locally why roots reggae is not as popular. If you were to go some places in the United States and Europe you would be surprised to hear the amount of roots reggae," said Calibud. He also pointed out that the genre had changed in terms of its beat since the music was moving with the pace. However, he maintains that it is the absence of the genre from the airwaves that has caused its decline. In all of this, Coco Tea points out that moving away from roots reggae would be abandoning part of our heritage. "We're killing a part of our heritage if we start dissing roots reggae. Hip-hop and dancehall come from reggae. Dancehall nuh mek money worldwide like roots reggae," he said. Brother Tom, Hail & Peace! I hope this finds the bredren in the best of health and in the Good Cheer of the Father's Master Plan. I must apologise for being tardy in writing to you in connection with my membership renewal. I received my reminder today, and I thought I should reply as soon as possible. Once more, I would like to solicit your kind consideration and assistance to continue my membership in this prestigious family. I am as yet not in a position to pay my dues to R.A.W. I am eternally indebted to you and all those kind and loving bredren & sistren who, thru their many sacrifices, have made my continued membership at R.A.W. possible all these years. I keep hoping though, that I too will some day be in a position to pay my dues, and also help other bredren who may not be in a position to do so. Needless to say, this family is such a tremendous influence in my life. In this hour, pondering again the inexpressible wonders of this heartical congregation, I feel time racing through the youthful calendar of my veins. The hints I've had! A burst of ineffable light in darkness, and electrical invasion of my soul's depths. A prodigious assist in time of need - a rainbow of heavenly music in my heart! All these suggest that just beyond my fingertips are truth, beauty, and goodness, mysteriously freighted with fragance, flavour and sustenance, for a growing soul like mine. Life is too short to enjoy all my worldwide family! How I have so long been needlessly impoverished- fraternally and spiritually. My heart is warm with the friendships that have come my way because of R.A.W., and better friends I'll not be knowing. I am grateful indeed to many R.A.W. bredren & sistren for their warm encouragement and kindness. I am the most privileged of men to have known this blessed family. I extend my thanks to individuals too numerous to name, who have given me deeply appreciated help and vigorous encouragement. Some individuals however, are deserving of special mention and thanks, for without them, I would not be what I am today - "A Winner" (smile). My eternal gratitude and love to Sister Kym & Brother Lawrence (R.A.W. #158), Sista Irie (R.A.W. #23) and Brother Ricky, Brother Alex "Peacemaker" Brosgart (R.A.W. #307), Brother Kevin (#136), Sister Roots Ranja (from Norway) and of course, Papa P. I am currently studying adult basic education through the university of S.A. I am also assisting as an English second-language tutor at the prison's educare center for grades 10 and 12. I also assist in the subjects of Economics & business-economics, and I am getting paid for it! Not that much though - but at least I am able to afford some basic needs. I have also started a reggae programme at the prison. We have a good sound system that uses cassettes, so I decided to forward some positive vibes and reasonings during the weekend when we have no classes. I am allowed some movement at the prison so I am in contact with fellow prisoners everyday. We are going thru some hard times with gang activities running rampant, power struggles amongst the officials and staff members, which are impacting very negatively to most of us inmates. At the moment there is a judicial commission of inquiry that is holding hearings on the stay and treatment of prisoners, corruption and smuggling at St Albans. The commission is investigating 8 prisons in the country including St Albans. We are the third prison to be visited, and I am one of the inmates who are expecting to be called to give verbal evidence. In closing, I would like to also extend my special gratitude to Brother Kevin (#136) for making my R.A.W. membership possible in the year 2001. Did you receive my letter, brother? Sis Kym sent me two boxfulls of great reggae music! Thank you Sis...,Mi Dear Idren, in the beginning was the Word. But must it forever go on multiplying?
