Clinton Fearon News ************************************************************************* [1]--------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Jah Son" Subject: From the R.A.W. Board Date: Sunday, October 27, 2002 8:35 PM Greetings to all R.A.W. members! After the Monterey Bay Reggae Festival, I made a report to the R.A.W. Board on the R.A.W. Event that took place. The Board recognizes the need to meet regularly and discuss issues of importance to the further growth of R.A.W. I suggested a monthly meeting in the R.A.W. Chat room to begin the first weekend in October. Unfortunately due to the many different time zones we live in, this initial meeting was poorly attended. And so we have agreed to "meet" each week via email to discuss various topics of concern. We've been allowing one week for discussion of a particular topic, at the end of such time, any votes that might need to be taken are tabulated. This method seems to be working well so far. All Board members agree that the summary of our discussions must be shared with the general membership, so I will soon be dispersing, via the RAW Forum and our on-line newsletter "Wha Gwaan in R.A.W.?", the summaries of our recent discussions. These summaries will be posted at the end of each discussion, once they have been written up. Our first topic of discussion was "Follow-up report on MBRF activities" and I will be posting that summary very soon. Our second topic of discussion was "What about next year?" and this topic generated so much input that we extended the time for discussion to two weeks, and finally agreed that it should be an open-ended discussion. Our current topic of discussion is "Ex-members and rejoining members reclaiming their old membership numbers" Our next topic for discussion is "R.A.W.'s 10th Anniversary Dec 2002" We encourage all RAW members to involve themselves in these discussions by posting their input to the R.A.W. Forum (NOT the "Wha Gwaan in R.A.W.?" newsletter, which is a separate means of communication). To participate in the R.A.W. Forum, you must subscribe to the Forum by sending a message to Majordomo@po.databack.com Message should read subscribe raw and should be sent from the email address you intend to use for discussion. The R.A.W. Board greatly values the input of its membership and hopes that members will take advantage of this opportunity to make their ideas and feelings known. We ask that input be constructive, and that suggestions for projects that R.A.W. should undertake are paired with offers to volunteer to help out. Event) Contributing to the discussion: Tom Mary Kyle David Challi Joanie Joel Nan Not contributing: Papa Pilgrim (on vacation) Zipp (recovering from surgery) Nane' Lee Summary: - Our first attempt at a Board "chat" was unsuccessful, only attended by Tom, Nan, and Joanie. Agreed to continue using e-mail to discuss Board matters. - All thought that the MBRF experience lacked essential communications (mostly w/ the promoter) that could have produced a more successful R.A.W. gathering. It was pointed out in this discussion, and at length during our deliberations over the summer, that we felt that R.A.W. was somewhat "hijacked" into being involved in this event. It was pointed out that the festival promoter was "raw" from this year's experience, and may well not be interested in dealing w/ R.A.W. next year. Kyle volunteered to represent the R.A.W. Board to the promoter, should MBRF 2003 be a possible venue for R.A.W. presence. - The thought on the R.A.W. Showcase was that it should have happened on Friday night, not Thursday ("that was plain dumb"), as there were very few people present on Thursday night and no music on Friday night. To date, as far as we know (with information from eight bands), two R.A.W. bands remain unpaid, and two others have received partial payment. - It was pointed out that there was no one at the R.A.W. gathering in the Monterey Room on Friday to collect the admission fee; this will not happen again. And to make certain that everything is above board, it is suggested that a Festival representative +and+ a R.A.W. representative be at the door for any future R.A.W. gathering at a Festival. - R.A.W. new memberships were paltry (according to Tom, 12-15 new members), as were CD and T-shirt sales. Tom is trying to follow up to find out if the promoter took in any new R.A.W. membership applications. - In hindsight, color flyers would have been good to have and pass around to the attendees on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. - Although Mary's involvement prior to the festival was a topic of discussion during the summer, those attending MBRF felt her presence and assistance (especially w/ arranging for placement of the R.A.W. booth, facilitating the entry of the R.A.W. team each day, and being very accessible) was greatly helpful. There was mention of having a co-coordinator for the Events & Conferences Board position; Mary would like to continue her involvement on the Board, agreeing to a switch in title and responsibilities if necessary. There was no "vote" to ask Mary to resign. - And, importantly, it was heartily agreed that R.A.W. must be in control of any future R.A.W. presence at any festival, have a written agreement/contract on what R.A.W. will get (a time line of events), and a realistic budget - all received and agreed upon well in advance of the Festival. We agreed that the R.A.W. presence at MBRF was beneficial to R.A.W., but that the entire process prior to the actual festival was not one we wish to repeat. Nan volunteered to prepare (hopefully w/input from Tom) a "turn-key" proposal for future R.A.W. gatherings, to be submitted to viable 2003 Festivals. The only "vote" called for was whether, or not, to send the MBRF promoter $250 toward the rental of the Monterey Room, and $100 toward the continental breakfast. To date, the vote stands as follows: Yes - 6 No - 1 Did not vote - 1 yes, but postpone delivery of the payment until something concrete is finalized regarding next year. yes, with reservations about first finding out if the promoter took in any R.A.W. membership dollars. yes, and quickly, to "do the right thing" and keep the door open, not only at MBRF but at other possible Festivals (for the future). yes, stating that R.A.W. did benefit from being at MBRF. yes, yes, with a preference that any money sent be used to pay unpaid R.A.W. performers no, based on lack of communication from the promoter, little promotion of the R.A.W. gathering. Would vote yes to the $100 for the continental breakfast +provided+ that we get copies of receipts +and+ we can re-establish contact w/promoter. Respectfully submitted, -Nan #72 [3]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Tom R.A.W. #33 Date October 26, 2002 Subject: R.A.W. Volunteer needed Greetings All! There is an immediate need for a volunteer to take over some duties performed in recent years by Kym Hansen (#158). Kym has been in charge of sending our RAW membership cards to new members or those would need replacements. The company where we have the cards made is located in Burlingame, Ca, between San Jose and San Francisco. (Exact location can be determined by contacting Kym directly) Our cards are made up in batches of 20s, so everytime I get 20 names (every 6 weeks or so), I have sent Kym a list that includes Membership Number Membership Name Renewal date Kym contacts the supplier with that info, and after a period of time, goes in to pick up the completed cards. she then sends those cards out to the members, using address labels that I have prepared and sent to her. Requirements of a new volunteer would require 1) contacting shop with card info. I'm not sure how this was done by Kym. I imagine info could be transmitted in person, by phone, fax or email. Correct spelling is essential so accuracy of information is crucial. 2) going to shop to pick up cards when done 3) preparing envelopes using pre-addressed labels provided by me with cards 4) going to Post Office to mail envelopes Any cost in purchasing envelopes and buying postage stamps would be reimbursible with proper receipts. Volunteer should live in vicinity of card shop to minimize travel, and must be able to make a commitment to this task for a minimum of two years. Please contact me immediately if you are interested. Kym is planning to return to school very soon and needs to give up this responsibility as soon as possible. We have obviously playlisted the rest of the station to fit in with reggae and dub and beach vibes!! The station runs the One Drop Reggae Show (Weds 4-6pm) and its flipside The 1 Dub (Sun night 10-12am). You will also hear a fair slice of reggae and dub thrown into the mix throughout the week. The general music policy is "funky and laid-back vibes for the beach tribes." And of course we have a special and personal interest in pushing Jah music. Bondi FM is audio-streaming and video-streaming through the web - so you can drop by and see and hear us anytime at www.bondifm.com.au Our controllable web-cam gives you views of the DJ's doing their thing and of Bondi Beach itself, so come and get a flavour of Down Under when you get a chance. They are finally here: the two new, debut releases from NATTY REMO with "BABYLON FALL" & WOOKIE J with "BIG UP THE CHILDREN," on KULCHA SHOK MUZIK. The cds are available thru KULCHA SHOK MUZIK, kulchashok.com, cdstreet.com, cdbaby.com and evetually thru most reggae shops worldwide. NATTY REMO "BABYLON FALL" A predominately live and original reggae album that features the title track as a video and eventually as a single with more artists and songs to go on the this original riddim. There are other stand out tracks like "ROBBERY", "NAH TELL THE TRUTH", "TRUE, TRUE LOVE, and "WANT IT ALL." The song "BABYLON FALL" is already getting airplay around the world and so is the soca remix of "YOU'RE MY LOVER." There is a very interesting cover of the Beatles song "Can't Buy Me Love". REMO makes his singing debut, it actually sounds like a guest artist. Then REMO djs his own original lyrics to the song as well. Other artists on the cd are WOOKIE J on "YANKEE & YARDEE," which is also on WOOKIE'S album but with a different mix, RAGGA LOX on "JAH IS WORHTY," MANNA PANNA on "CHOP A LAWN" and the previously released "WRONG BABYLON" with COOL BREEZE, now known as YAH BREEZE. This song was also released on the "REGGAE FREE MUMIA" cd. There are three songs that have also been previously released on the compilation cd "KULCHARAL DANCEHALL," which is still available,"WORK," "PRETTY LOOKS," and "CHAMPION SOUND." "BABYLON FALL" closes out with 5 dub tracks: the dubs of "BABYLON FALL", "ROBBERY", "WANT IT ALL", "NAH TELL THE TRUTH" and "TRUE,TRUE LOVE." This is the long awaited and overdue album from NATTY REMO. He started djing back in the 1980's on the Survival sound system in Jamaica. REMO quickly created a following with his energetic and dynamic performances all over Jamaica. This quickly got the attention of promoters. So REMO ended up on every major stage show in Jamaica: Sunsplash, Sumfest, Sting, White River Reggae Bash, you name it REMO was on it. He even was nominated for best new artist of the year by the Binns awards, the same year as Determine and Anthony B. Producers in Jamaica, wanted him for his obvious talent. So Barry O'Hare, Bobby Digital and several others started to voice REMO. Eventually this is how we linked and created the album "BABYLON FALL." His stint in NY earned him best new artist and DJ of the Year awards. His fans are really excited about his debut album "BABYLON FALL." Order yours today from KULCHA SHOK MUZIK. WOOKIE J "BIG UP THE CHILDREN" This is the debut album "BIG UP THE CHILDREN," which has so much to offer: originality, spirituality, roots reggae, dancehall on foundation riddims, jazz, and guest artists. The album opens with the original title track and dedication to the kids: "BIG UP THE CHILDREN." His spirituality shines right away on "THANK JAH," as well as on tracks like "THIS LIFE," "TELL IT TO YOUR NEIGHBOR" & "RUN COME." WOOKIE'S roots can be heard throughout the cd as well. The lover's rock/jazzy styled "DARLING" is just sweet and features Fiona. Other guests include Shinehead on "NICE UP THE DANCE," which is on the "BABYLON FALL" riddim, the hip hop track "FLIP THE SCRIPT" reunited WOOKIE with producer Steffan Franz(Stand Out Selector) & Rocker-T & "YANKEE & YARDEE" is a reggae/hip hop track written by LANCE-O with NATTY REMO. Both albums have different mixes of this track. The original dancehall style is heard thru WOOKIE'S direct influence from the Godfather Nicodemus, especially on the take off of "Boneman Connection" called "HERBMAN CONNECTION." The song is a dedication to Demus and is on the same riddim as the original, too. Other foundation dancehall riddims can be heard on the 2002 mix of "CUTIE PIE," "ROMP UP INNA THE PLACE," & "I'VE SEEN IT HAPPEN." This last song, "LOVE WILL FIND A WAY," and "RUN COME," are also available on "KULCHARAL DANCEHALL," the compilation from KULCHA SHOK MUZIK. The album closes out with three dub tracks of "BIG UP THE CHILDREN," "DARLING" & "TELL IT TO YOUR NEIGHBOR." Enjoy. Listen online at www.KULCHASHOK.com. Born Johnathan Craig Woodall in St. Augustine, Fl., WOOKIE J was exposed to the waves & sweet beat of reggae music from an early age. In fact, his first reggae show he went to was King Yellowman and during that show he knew it was reggae he was going to do the for the rest of his life. That was 1986 and since then he's been chatting on the mic. Now this is how the journey goes. The waves took him to Hawaii where he met and linked up with Steffan Franz(Stand Out Selector). This relation built the foundation for what is today the Positive Sound Massive. This partnership lead to the forming of the group, label, and soundsystem all under the name PSM. Here WOOKIE recorded his first songs, which includes "CUTIE PIE." This eventually lead to big shows with Maxi Priest during his prime years of "Housecall," as well as with many other artists that include his teachers and prototype Nicodemus and Barrington Levy. KULCHA SHOK MUZIK made the link thru his association with PSM and as they say the rest is history. WOOKIE J & LANCE-O were childhood friends so they vibed well together and even wrote several songs. So enjoy WOOKIE'S destiny and dream in "BIG UP THE CHILDREN." The videos for each title album have also been completed so, those with video programs please contact us with your first format preference and then your second choice(vhs, beta, 3/4, mini dv, etc.). DJs get in touch for promos. We need stores, websites, distributors, and retailers as a whole who want to sell the cd. Artists are available for interviews and we are looking to go on the road in January and into February. Booking agents, promoters, and club owners please let us know if you'd like these artist to perform in your area. Any help at all is greatly appreciated. [8]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Robert Roskind (#1715) Date: Sun, 20 Oct 2002 08:28:02 -0400 From: robert roskind Subject: ROSKIND/MIRACLE IN JAMAICA UPDATE 10/18 Greeting, everyone: We are now planning our next event in Jamaica. After the summer of having booths at 5 reggae festivals, we have found that the young (ages 15-30) are the most receptive to the concept of healing societies with One Love. This is understandable given the drain living many years can often take on people. We have decided that we will return to Jamaica again this year during Bob Marley's birthday week (February 2-10) for the second "Gathering of the Healers: The Healing of the Nation" to be held at The University of the West Indies (UWI). We will also bring this message of healing societies by healing our personal relationships to other college and high school students (details below). If you know of schools or gatherings on the island (or in the U.S.) where you would like us to speak, please contact us. We will meet with business and church groups and give a copy of the book to many of the island's political, social, church and business leaders. This year's theme will be "One Love-Big Up The Youths." We will also be introducing our second book, "The Gathering of the Healers: The Healing of the Nation" which chronicles the first Gathering. You can order the book by going to our Amazon Z shop at: http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/ts/exchange-glance/Y04Y2234049Y1419276/102-7403439-2328957. If you want to just read the speech's everyone made that night, you can read them free online at: http://www.rastaheart.com/speaches.html Our Website is: http://www.rastaheart.com One Love, Robert and Julia Roskind The Gathering of the Healers: The Healing of the Nation II Last year, on February 4, 2002 at the Bob Marley Museum in Kingston Jamaica, American author Robert Roskind (Rasta Heart, In the Spirit of Business, In the Spirit of Marriage, etc.) organized the first Gathering of the Healers: The Healing of the Nation, with the theme "One Love/Make It Happen". After asking many Jamaicans who were the nationally-known "healers" on the island (teachers of love), Roskind asked 12 individuals to join him that night. Together they invited Jamaicans, via this press conference, to be the first society in history to begin to heal itself with love by exercising greater forgiveness in their personal relationships. Joining him that night were reggae artists Luciano, Denroy Morgan and Abijah, UPP President Antonnette Haughton-Cardenas, author Dr. Dennis Forsythe and Rasta Elder Mortimo Planno. Also invited but not attending was Tourist Minister Portia Simpson, UWI professors Barry Chevannes and Trevor Munroe, Bob Marley's mother Cedella Marley Booker, Rev. Howard Gregory and reggae artist Tony Rebel. This year's Gathering of the Healers, whose theme is "One Love/ Big Up The Youths," is now being planned again during Bob Marley's birthday week in 2003 (final date to be set in December). Once again various healers will come together to bring this invitation forward. This time the Gathering will be held at University of the West Indies (UWI) in Kingston and the message will be directed toward the youths. The 3-hour evening will be a combination of speakers (healers) discussing with the audience the healing qualities of forgiveness and sharing the vision of Jamaica healing itself as a society. Also there will be performances by various reggae artists whose songs bring forward this message of One Love (Abijah, Luciano, Morgan Heritage, Tony Rebel, Bushman, Beres Hammond, Marcia Griffiths and Don Carlos will be invited to perform.). If possible, the evening will end with drumming and a large "Fire of Forgiveness" outside where healers will continue to reason with the students around the fire and students will be asked to begin their own healing process by forgiving, as much as they are able, anyone they hold bitterly in their hearts.
