Gates 6:00 p.m. (showtime is from 6:30-10. Opening entertainment is Tahoe¹s own, DJ Switch. Toots and the Maytals' lead singer, Frederick Hibbert (Toots), was born in Maypen Clarendon, Jamaica from a large family and began singing at the age of seven in the church choir. In his teenage years, he left his family in search of musical inspiration and moved to Trench Town in Kingston, the capitol of Jamaica, where he met Raleigh and Jerry. There he formed his group and they named themselves The Maytals. After struggling for a while, they began singing for Clement Dodd, who is an internationally acclaimed soundman and producer known to the public as Sir Coxsone Dodd, from Studio One. The group made their debut on the music scene when the ska craze was in full swing (ska is the frenetic forerunner to reggae). Ska vocalists needed to work very hard indeed to make themselves stand out against the heavy, frantic and often overpowering rhythms, and Toots sang himself hoarse in true Baptist-preacher style, while Jerry and Raleigh filled in whatever gaps were left, to make a solid, impenetrable wall of sound. Subtlety was not their strong point, but the sheer vibrant joy of all that they were doing is evident in every note. It was not too long before The Maytals were the number-one vocal group in Jamaica - a position they would maintain throughout the 60s and on into the 70s. They introduced a spiritual feel to ska and this new, slower, more hypnotic style was welcomed by the listening public. When their songs became hits, it was obvious they were heading for the big time. Their records quickly established a bright jumping pattern of success that captured the hearts of many listeners, thus securing a position in the public list of favorite singers. He is deemed responsible for coining the word "reggae" because he was the first person to mention the word "reggae" in his music by naming one of his hits "Do The Reggay". His group made history in 1980 when, on September 29, they recorded a live album in London, which was released just 24 hours after the performance and sold over 50,000 copies! Few live excursions have been able to capture the feel and spontaneity of this album, which showcases the Maytals at their best: live without embellishments. They also appeared in the hugely popular film, The Harder They Come, singing one of their all-time favorites, "Pressure Drop". Toots is a producer, singer, songwriter and also plays the guitar and piano. He became a legend, a household name in Jamaica and was nominated for the Grammy Award in 1988 for his album Toots & the Maytals in Memphis and in 1990 for the one-hour live album: Knock Out which went gold, and the song entitled "Beautiful Woman" went platinum. Many international artists including Bonnie Raitt, The Clash, Robert Palmer and The Specials have covered Toots' songs. Toots' singing career earned him the citation and proclamation to the city of Philadelphia. Every year, October 20 is known as "Toots Hibbert Day" in that city. His music also earned him the "Order of Distinction" in Jamaica. He is known as a legend in Reggae music. Thirty-five years of Toots' belting out his repertoire of eminently memorable songs hardly shows. How many generations of people have Toots and his dedicated, musicians delighted, enlightened, and inspired, not through preachy didacticism, but through a truckload of wholesome, funky reggae? What is so refreshing about Toots’ live shows today is that not only do they have such cathartic power, but they offer young people a real, living example of how a lot of music used to be how Toots still is. Reggae fans, young and old, will be able to see this exciting living legend, nicknamed the "James Brown of Reggae" because of his incredible, high-energy stage performance. You get the band Henry Turner Jr. & Flavor, a band whose unique style and presence on stage has given them a special following in their native Louisiana and now the world. The band will start its first Japanese tour on August 22nd in Tokyo and it will end in Nagasaki, Japan. "This is a market we have been wanting to tap into and now have the opportunity thanks to some friends in the Texas market," says Turner. Henry Turner Jr., lead vocalist and guitarist for the band, is the driving force behind the band's appeal. Turner's influence on the band comes somewhat from his early musical influences including blues and jazz greats like B.B. King, Bob Marley and George Benson, allowing him to bring forth a unique perspective to the realm of reggae. When asked to describe the band's style of the music, Turner says, "It is an infused sound with R&B, Reggae and some jazz chording. This unique style has allowed Flavor to go where other bands cannot." Rhadd Hunt, bassist and vocalist, has been an influential member of the band since its inception. From an early age, Hunt learned a number of instruments, finally settling on playing the bass. "I've always been gripped by low end frequencies and I love the role of the bass in laying down the groove. It's one of the instruments that people can feel and that affects them on a deeper level," says Hunt. When asked about the style of music that the band creates, Hunt replied, "It's a very spiritual message placed on top of an eclectic blend of syncopated genres." Ronnie Houston, the senior member of the Flavor band, is a profound R&B drummer. With various influences, including artists such as Bobby Powell, James Brown, Buddy Rich and Billy Cobham, Houston has toured the United States and Europe since the early 1970s and has added an element of stability to the Flavor roster since 1990. Henry Turner Jr. and Flavor have toured throughout the United States with the US Reggae Road Show Tour, The New Louisiana Legends Tour and the Bob Marley Fest in addition to having a strong touring presence, playing in 30 to 40 cities each year. The band has been featured in recent television performances in New Orleans and in California as well as on The All You Can Eat Texas Music Café, which is broadcast nationally on over 300 stations. The bands recent CD's include Louisiana Gumbo Combo (2002) and Facing The Millennium (2000). The bands recent video release, Happy Mardi Gras (2003), features a new Mardi Gras song with exciting, live Mardi Gras footage direct from Louisiana. [5]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Asociacion Cultural Reggae (#1499) Subject: News from Spain : Spanish Town Reggae , the spanish reggae in CD! Date: Tue, 29 Jul 2003 22:18:28 +0200 From: ACR - RAW Member #1499 SPANISH TOWN REGGAE The spanish music market offers us regularly reggae compilation albums including old tunes from jamaican big stars, tunes repeated each and every time in different packages, (but some exceptions) that bring us nothing new to our ears. This is not the case of Spanish Town Reggae. It is a compilation album including new tunes, but become new because all tunes are really brand new releases and all artists and bands are nationals. So, it is the first one in the spanish musical history, just including 34 reggae bands and artists from our land. Spanish Town Reggae was announced as a plural compilation where musical quality prevail over standards, old reggae and dancehall music walk alongside with other jamaican styles, while the main purpose of this double CD was take a look of what was going on in jamaican music through our bands. That's why we can find in this double CD a wide variety of styles, from early reggae with some spices of jazz from the 60's, going to roots reggae from 70's, to dancehall/ragga from the 90's, not forgetting lovers rock style, dub... Everything happened because of artists, most of them excited about the project, and sharing all tunes without interest, many of them brand new releases. Artists like LOUD & LONE, BASQUE DUB FOUNDATION, LA PUTA OPP (RAGGAFLA), NATURALS, JAH'STA, KE RULE, DADY MAZA o MORODO and upcoming artists with a nice future like BATISCAFO, SUPER APE, BANGARANG, PRINCE MIKE o 12 TRIBU, just to name a few. As much as 34 different names to build a 2 hours and a half double CD. Spanish Town Reggae is the most ambitious project since now from ACR on its three working years spreading out this musical style, very ignored at our country. All benefits of this project are destinated to the association, helping to continue with some other projects ACR has begun, like the first and biggest Reggae website in spanish, Free Soul Reggae News (www.reggae-news.net) or The Reggae Guide, as many others. Reggae has been forgotten long time in Spain, but from 4 or 5 years ago, the progression has been really great, also in creativity. Many many bands had been formed, with some others known by us. Interesting projects are making new studios been built, just used for reggae music, and there's a wide variety of international reggae artists collaborations. This album shows it. The people with a minimum love for reggae music, will find and enjoy this compilation with tunes of well known bands, but also will find many surprises from upcoming new band tunes, as it happened to us while preparing this record. The people who come to reggae for their very first time, will be trapped for sure, because of this musical musical, from heart to deep soul. If you haven't already heard, Christafari is embarking on a European tour beginning August 6, 2003. (See http://christafari.com/concerts/list.html for tour details). We wanted to make sure you were informed so you don't miss this rare chance to see Christafari live in the Netherlands. We will be performing at the Flevo Festival, Melkweg and Festival Gouda, along with a host of other concerts in Sweden, Finland, and the UK. While we have 4 shows booked in the Netherlands so far, there are still a couple openings that need to be filled in either the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium: 14-Aug Holland Flevo Festival Confirmed Mainstage - 7pm 14-Aug Holland Flevo Festival Confirmed Music Box - 2am *15-Aug Open (Please help us book a concert here) 16-Aug Holland Melkweg - Amsterdam Confirmed www.melkweg.nl *17-Aug Open (Please help us book a concert here) *18-Aug Open (Please help us book a concert here) *19-Aug Open (Please help us book a concert here) *20-Aug Open (Please help us book a concert here) *21-Aug Open (Please help us book a concert here) 22-Aug Holland Festival Gouda Confirmed Mainstage Request for assistance: As you can see by the above schedule, we need some help. If you know of any promoters, clubs, churches, ministries or outreaches that would be interested in booking the Christafari gospel reggae experience, please contact us immediately at the address below. Since we will already be in the area, no unreasonable offer will be refused, and we are willing to consider a love offering at churches in lieu of a fee or honorarium. If you are not a promoter, but know someone who is, please forward this e-mail to them, and/or the pastor/event organizer of your local church. We have come to minister and don't want to have six days of downtime in Holland when we could be spreading the good news over roots reggae and dancehall. Lastly, we have tried desperately to book Christafari at the Reggae Sundance Festival on August 17th, but have not been successful. If there is any way that you could help convince the promoters of this festival to book us, it would be greatly appreciated. If you are interested in helping us with any of the above needs, please e-mail: scott@lionofzion.com or call (615) 360-7664.
