PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! The show in Minneapolis was very good. The promoter Lynval Jackson and the whole Third World crew were very cooperative. The show was originally suppose to be at The Quest Club but they cancelled it so the promoter had to move it to The Cabooze. The Cabooze is a nice venue - it's a bar-type club but a big club with a nice stage. Minneapolis has a big Jamaican community so we saw a lot of Jamaican people there as well as people from all walks of life. Copeland Forbes was the mc. He's celebrating forty years in the business and it's really good to be able to be amongst somebody who has so much experience. He is without a doubt one of the best mcs ever and is the one that introduces us every night. The Jah Messenjah Band, Luci, Mikey General and Dean Fraser - the whole family were in top form. And the people when they were leaving the show told us that this was a show that they would pay any amount of money to come and see because of how it made them feel. One of the greatest things about doing this business is when you have people come to you and tell you that they really apprecia-love your work - it gives us our reason for being - for continuing on our mission. Me and Brother Luci had started playing dominos from the other day in the back of the bus. I never use to like dominos but since the other day we have been playing and it's fun so now we have our own dominos crew. Now there's one up front and our own around the back - the herbalist crew is branching out. By the way, Luci gave me six-love and I gave him back two. Some of the folks ask if there is bickering on the bus? I'd like to state clearly for the record that this band does not bigger amongst each other. We see each other as family and treat each other with respect. If there is any dispute, it's handled privately and sometimes you don't even know that there's a dispute. We are on one bus and we are one family it's a very loving vibe. I'm not saying that we are perfect and that we never have any disputes but that they are just quietly and respectfully handled. Kansas City was a show where we had no hotel so we had to freshen up before leaving Minneapolis and than change our clothes on the bus when we reached Kansas City. We had to do everything on the bus. The show in Kansas City was kept by a promoter called Dave Clarke who is a close friend of the crew. Kansas City has a lot of hardcore reggae fans. The people there love the music. We did a radio interview before the show with Empress Erica Lewis and that really pumped us up with energy before the performance because she asked some nice questions and put us in that frame of mind. The show itself was dynamic. The people were very receptive from the start of the show to the end of the show. It seemed like the Jah Messenjah family has a special place in the hearts of the people of Kansas City. Luci was even previously given the key to the city. After the show, we signed autographs as much as we could and than we headed straight to Colorado. In Kansas City, I met a brother who I think is from Arkansas - we were talking about the Qabalah and he was talking about His Imperial Majesty (HIM) and Christ and this was a subject that really touched our hearts. You have some people who want to disassociate HIM with Christ but His Majesty never said to do that - he said that we must emulate Christ and try to be like him. HIM and Christ are inseparable - they are one - you can't love one and not love the other one. He was telling us that he encounters some rastamen who fight him down because he talks about Christ but we were encouraging him to be strong and to just follow the teachings of His Majesty and not the words of man. We told him to hold his faith and not to let anyone sway him and to walk always in His Majesty's path. Fort Collins is a small town outside of Boulder but it seems they have a strong reggae following out there. The show was kept at the Aggie Theatre. It was only half full but we find that sometimes when you go to some shows that are half full, there are a lot of vibes - a lot of energy - a lot of vibration. The people seem to enjoy themselves more and we seem to give even more of ourselves - we're enjoying ourselves on stage and the people are enjoying it too - there's a strong interaction of energy. Jah is great because this gift that he has given us to carry his message all over the world is so fulfilling both to us and to people who we interact with. The show was awesome and a lot of people told me that they knew "Exalt Jah." I didn't know that it was so popular in Colorado. We left the show and went straight to the hotel and rested because after the long drive the day before, we were exhausted. Boulder. Boulder is one of our favorite places. The people there really love this crew. And it seems like "Exalt Jah" is a very big album down there. A lot of people have been telling me that and it gave me a lot of strength and encouragement. For a Wednesday night, the show was rammed. Because it was during the week, we didn't know so much people would be there but like I said, in Boulder, Colorado the people really love the music and the message. As usual, the Jah Messenjah Band, Dean Fraser, myself and Luciano were in outstanding form. And this was no doubt one of the better shows we have done thus far -- even though all of them are good, with this one, the energy was just very high. On the way to Truckee, I got two six-love, Luci gave me one and Jah Lloyd gave me one. I'm just learning dominos so they're taking advantage of me. The drive to Truckee was a long one, but it's an early show so I'm just now getting ready to move. Saturday, August 9th, at Meadowridge Farm, Huntsburg, Ohio. BY TOMMY FOX feedback@clevescene.com Over the past 11 years, the Midwest Reggae Fest has blossomed into the most successful annual reggae festival between California and N.Y.C. And with good reason: Who doesn't enjoy packing the cooler (and the collie pipe) and basking in the sun-soaked smoky vibes, while the best of Jamaica and Northeast Ohio's reggae talent pumps through those enormous woofers? Opening this year's fest is Carlos Jones, who's been consistently active on Cleveland's reggae scene for nearly a quarter of a century now -- longer than most others in town. He started out as a member of Ital before becoming front man for First Light. Today, as leader of the P.L.U.S. Band, Carlos carries on the roots and nyabinghi tradition of reggae's glory days. His enthusiasm and sincerity never fail to win the hearts of his audiences. Ital was Cleveland's earliest reggae band, formed in the late '70s. The group's steady rotation of members served as a training camp for many of Cleveland's most respected reggae musicians. Ital dissolved in 1993, but re-formed last year with singer-guitarist "Papa Dave" Smeltz (the only consistent member of the band throughout its 15-year trajectory), original bassist Dave Valentine, and others who have played with the band throughout the years. Since regrouping, their handful of gigs has drawn enthusiastic crowds. Columbus's Ark Band has been performing since the late '80s, when the Bobb brothers (Eustace and Terry, on bass and drums, respectively) assembled the band. Their constant touring likely accounts for the fact that they've had only two full-length releases. 1995's Nah Give Up and '99's Love Is What We Need are both fine endeavors, packed with gems that demonstrate the Ark Band's keen ability to balance pure reggae, calypso and the soca music so popular in St. Lucia, where the Bobbs were born. Headliner Luciano's been on the scene for nearly a dozen years. Never afraid to swim upstream, he's one of the figures most responsible for reinvigorating the Jamaican genre with spiritual consciousness after the slack lyrics and gun talk so common in the '90s. Hits such as "Ulterior Motive" and "It's Me Again Jah" proved Luciano a talent to be reckoned with, while "Sweep Over My Soul" is one of the great expressions of the Rasta renaissance to emerge from the latter half of the last decade. Serve Jah, released this summer on VP Records, shows that Luciano has only just reached his stride. --Tommy Fox ========== from on line clevescene.com | originally published: August 6, 2003 one, peace, roots-ee http://thearkband.com http://thearkband.com/gigz/index.html [5]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Reggae Russ (#19) Subject: The 7th Annual Doheny Days World Music Festival Date: Fri, 15 Aug 2003 23:09:21 EDT From: ReggaeRuss@aol.com The 7th Annual Doheny Days World Music Festival September 13th and 14th, 2003 This year’s line-up is announced Tickets on sale Now Book your hotel room early to get the best rate The 2003 Doheny Days World Music Festival features the best in roots, dancehall and old school reggae with a touch of funk, latin hip-hop and electronica to keep you grooving all weekend long: Saturday, Sept. 13 Jimmy Cliff Andrew Tosh Yellowman Eek a Mouse Rocky Dawuni Medicine Drum World Anthem Local Culture HB Surround Sound And 1 more act to be announced Sunday, Sept. 14 Third World Wayne Wonder Maxi Priest Ozomatli Mikey Dread John Brown’s Body Nobody Cares Lyons Den Mystic Roots Festival Tickets Tickets are on sale now and buying them has never been easier: Log onto www.omegaevents.com to order your tickets and have them mailed to you.
