PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! Well on to the News: Our biggest news this month is PSM is finally releasing biL: Magic Thumper PSM4906-2, after 5 long years in the making. Many folks have asked when this album was going to drop, and we have had some unforeseen problems plague this "one of a kind" release. We now have a confirmed release date of September 9th, 2003 when this amazing record will hit stores. The CD is a mix of dancehall and hip-hop beats mixed with a Surf infused "Wall of Sound" or "Sonic Stew" over the top. It also features a heap of amazing turntable madness, and a sprinkle of live percussion... Indeed, this is not like any album you have ever heard before. For complete album info, links to buying the CD online or to downloading a free music sample, check it out at: http://www.psmrecordings.com/bil.html We will be sending out limited promos of the CD in about two weeks and the CD will be available online through our website starting next week. Also look for a few "in-store" and "on-air" performances by biL in the coming months. There is talk of a short West Coast tour by this "Studio" band in September or October. In other PSM news, Stand Out Selector has just completed mastering "A Pair of Olive Leaves", the 17 track debut album from Poetz4Peace. This album is going to be one of SOS's biggest projects ever as it bridges the gap between Greek and Turkish Cypriots, using music as its common bond. Recorded almost entirely in Cyprus, with some post-production in San Francisco, the album is set to release in Greece, Turkey and Cyprus in late September and will drop in the US and UK by mid-October. Below please find the text of the Poetz4Peace press release: Poetz4Peace "A Pair Of Olive Leaves" OTM 001- CD Mediterranean Release Date: September 22, 2003 US and European Release Date: October 15, 2003 For Immediate Release: Positive Sound Massive Recordings and Olive Tree Music, LTD are proud to present the first ever release from Poetz4Peace, a group of poets, singers, musicians, and studio personnel, who feel through music just below the radar of politics, true world peace can be achieved. Mission Statement Hatred is divisive. In so many places around the world old lies and common sense half-truths pile up, decay and then rejuvenate themselves. Cyprus is no different from anywhere else in this sense. Amongst a vast ocean of misconceptions about "each other" and "ourselves" a few poets, musicians and producers have created this music with a positive message. It was no easy task. After 28 years of division, working together is still a taboo subject! For that reason, all the songs were recorded at three different studio locations and linked through the Internet. That in itself makes this one of the most unique recording projects of this new millennium. The determination to create works together is what makes Poetz4Peace really tick. Our mission is peace through the music - some of the most positive vibes ever to come out of the deepest Mediterranean. Musically it's about both harmony and a sense of defying the boundaries. Cultures clash, combine and fuse, creating a world melting pot where reggae stylings and hip hop riddims encounter the bouzouki and dumbek with conscious, original, soul-searching lyrics. Poetz4Peace intend to be transglobalculturalists with shared perspectives and without prejudices or hang-ups about who we are, where we come from and where we’re going. The overall aim is to launch an independent, positive-minded music label, known as Olive Tree Music, and of course in the meantime, share some reasoning with audiences throughout the world. Who are they, these Poetz4Peace? Steffen Franz, Zeki Ali, Haji Mike and Mike Minas are an international collective of musicians, vocalists, poets and producers who have teamed up to make some amazing musical and lyrical fusion. Steffen Franz - aka Stand Out Selector (SOS)? a remixer, beatmaker and PSM label founder, based in San Francisco. SOS facilitates the process and keeps the team inspired: “Our mission is to make this music heard throughout the world and to enjoy the knowledge that we are doing something that is changing the world around us for the better.” Steffen has produced over 30 full length CDs including tracks, albums and remixes for and with internationally known artists such as Barrington Levy, Shinehead, Nicodemus, Mix Master Mike, Rocker-T, Jamalski, Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus, and Automator (aka Dan Nakamura), just to name a few. His production style favors early KRS-1 with the hybridizing of Dancehall Reggae and Hip-Hop. He also DJs and performed for a few hundred thousand people opening up the show on the Beastie Boys' Hello Nasty World Tour. Zeki Ali ? a poet, writer and radio presenter living in Kyrenia, Cyprus. As a published poet in a small island community Zeki strongly believes that peace is inevitable and division will be a subject in the history books. He believes that we can't sit down and wait for it. "Our trials will be the greatest gifts to our children and we lovingly take our part in it. Peace is not just an alternative to war: it's a way of life. A universal religion." He says he is a simple person who is proud to be simple. He has nothing to lose. “Instead of being the object of manipulation by others we prefer to stand up and say you can not be right on everything and every time.” He doesn't want to see the future blocked by the mistakes of people from the past. Haji Mike - a poet, musician, producer, and Ph.D., living in Nicosia, Cyprus. Haji is one of the few musicians based in Cyprus with world-wide recognition (airplay in over 40 countries). He also is an assistant professor in communications at Intercollege, Nicosia. Haji Mike has worked with various people over the last 15 years as a recording artist and DJ including the legendary worldbeat DJ Dave Hucker, acid-jazz-funkers Izit and Greek hip-hop trio Imiskoubria. Having come up with the idea for "Poetz4Peace" and "Olive Tree Music", Haji Mike sought to find like-minded souls. As he says "It's about optimism, positivity, doing something actually locally based, and forward thinking, that's what makes it so fresh - so daring and so different." Mike Minas ? a musician, engineer, and bouzouki virtuoso. His parents were from Northern Cyprus but moved to London after the Turkish occupation in 1974. Mike returned to Cyprus ten years ago and now lives in Limassol. He fell in love with the bouzouki when he was 10 years old and saw one in a sweet shop then taught himself how to play. His father thought the bouzouki was beneath him and insisted he learn classical piano. Mike has developed his own studio in Limassol to record his own music and not pay others for studio time. Now his studio is used by many musicians from all over Greece and Cyprus. About Poetz4Peace he says, “Its a big message for Cyprus for people who want to listen and understand and not be hypocritical.” Further details available from: US Label Contact: Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector PSM Recordings 2261 Market Street, PMB 487 San Francisco, CA, 94114 USA Tel: (415) 835-4799 Email mailto:standout@psmrecordings.com http://www.psmrecordings.com European Label Contact: Haji Mike Olive Tree Music LTD HMP PO BOX 25116 Nicosia, Cyprus, CY-1307 Tel: 357 22 372063 Email mailto:hajimike@spidernet.com.cy http://www.olivetreemusic.com US Media Contact: Erwin Karl - Promotional Rescue 700 NW 42nd St., #419, Seattle, WA 98107 Tel: (206) 355-1600 Email mailto:promoresc@yahoo.com For more info on Poetz4Peace or Olive Tree Music, please check out both websites at the e-addresses above. It has taken a few years to get people checking out the site, but now we are proud to say that plenty of folks have used the web to check out our label and it's artists. Visits from over 90 countries, including some we never even knew existed... Nuff Respect to all of the folks who linked to our site... Thanks for the love. We will be doing some "Web Only" special sales in September so check out the site in a few weeks... Finally, big up to Not For Not... Our little "Stoner Rock" band. We had a great party this past weekend at Lennon Rehearsal Studios in San Francisco. Thanks to all of the folks who came out to support and wish SOS a Happy Birthday... Next up, Not For Not is playing a benefit this coming weekend (Sat, August 23rd) at Voodoo Lounge in SF, then go into the studio to record their first EP in early September. Be on the lookout for some west coast gigs in October and November... That's all for now but we will send out another update in about two weeks with a "one-sheet" and other info on biL and some new developments with Poetz4Peace... Until then, take care of each other... [4]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Dubwize (#1685) Subject: DUBWIZE, BURNING SPEAR, ISRAEL VIBRATIONS, Thank you! Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2003 17:11:37 EDT From: GlenChase@aol.com Thank you again (and again) RAW people! Since Dubwize started sharing events with you just months ago, they have opened concerts for MIDNITE (setting a record for attendance for the opening band) and CULTURE. Now BURNING SPEAR and ISRAEL VIBRATION have asked Dubwize to open their concerts. Burning Spear at Slim's - San Francisco, Sunday, August 31. Israel Vibration at the Catalyst - Santa Cruz Sunday, September 7. Whatever RAW magic (and effort) you RAW People have done to make this happen, THANK YOU! But first, Dubwize has their own show at the Catalyst this Saturday Night, August 23, called DUBWIZE "ALL NIGHT". Dubwize was invited into the Mayor's office of a very large city in the central coast area of California to discuss how Dubwize can use their "Explosive energy, popularity, talent and Peaceful Vibe" to further the harmony for all the city's people and to serve as role models for the youth. RAW PEOPLE, please take total credit and joy in this and in Reggae Music and its message, as Dubwize (RAW member #1685) is being recognized now by the general population massive, and asked to lead and help in bringing love and peace to all. Remember that Dubwize fans have a reputation at many venues for "Having the most fun and some of the nicest people to ever come through their door". And now Dubwize is being asked to carry this vibe to all. So RAW is making progress to lead us to peace, through love, music and peaceful living. Peace is a way of life, not the time between wars. RAW People, you have done so much for Dubwize, and we are working hard and well to be worthy of your support. Aggressively, but with humble hearts, we ask you again, as we did last e-mail, to please come to the Catalyst in Santa Cruz on Saturday, August 23. We asked you to come as far as 125 miles last time, and that is so much to ask, but we ask even broader now. Dubwize is playing no less than spectacular music lately. But Dubwize cannot play the spectacular music without you, without your hearts and your love and your feelings and your dreams and your life's experiences facing and in front of them. With you and your people there, with us and all of our people there, we will shock and energize Dubwize and we will get to be part of something absolutely spectacular, absolutely raw, absolutely wonderful, absolutely worthwhile. Lets shock Dubwize and have this happen, lets make this happen. >From Canada to Mexico, from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and places beyond, please come. Please plan a safe and enjoyable road trip to Santa Cruz's Catalyst for this Saturday night, August 23. Please come early and bring all your people. Please love every person this evening (and always). How else can it be. DUBWIZE "ALL NIGHT" Saturday, August 23 Catalyst - Santa Cruz, California 1011 Pacific Ave - downtown Dubwize 831-633-2802 / Catalyst recording 831-423-1336 (21 & over) $8 advance / $10 at the door. http://www.dubwizemusic.com/ [5]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From John Reichle (#1681) Subject: Creation Steppin' Radio Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2003 09:54:16 -0500 From: John Reichle Creation Steppin' Radio on Live365 continues to pump out the best of classic and modern roots reggae. We wish to thank once again all of the artists and their representatives who have helped us become the #1 reggae stream on Live365, serving 50,000 listeners a month. It seems that change is always around the corner in the "business" of internet broadcasting, and once again that's the case with us. In a week or two we will be converting our broadcast from a 56 kbs mp3 stream to a 64 kbs mp3pro stream. For once, this is a change that we're excited about. Mp3pro technology will be supported in the Live365 Player for Preferred Members, and listeners via WinAmp can download an mp3pro plug-in. What's the benefit for the listener? Well, for listeners with an mp3pro decoder enabled, the broadcast will be virtually of FM-quality. Listeners without the decoder will hear something around 56kbs mp3 just like before. My tests show that this is going to be nothing short of sweet, so sweet in fact that I went to the trouble of converting 5,000 music files to be ready for it. More details are available under the "news" tab at http://www.creation-steppin.com. I'm also looking to pursue a symbiotic thing (one hand wash the other) with regional DJ's on terrestrial radio whereby a willing DJ would record a station sweeper or two for I station that also gives big ups to their own broadcast. If any DJ's are interested please contact me at jreichle@scottsboro.org. What a breath taking beautiful showcase - among many others - at the biggest North German Reggae Jam 2003 ! In the large Klosterparc, shadowed by big old trees and surounded by a little river the reggae crowd did meet for the 9th two days festival. Well organized, with a big fair of Jamaica related items, ital food and drinks and , worth to mention,a tropical hot hot sunny weather. When Hylton The Whistler Brown took the stage it was like a firestorm. With his mighty thundering voice he attracted the attention of the audience, educating, unifying and touching everybody. Outernational Sound Crew was doing a very good job alongside with Hylton the Whistler Brown. His first eight songs were brandnew, never released, and the people screamed when they heard them."Positive vibes" and "I feel like flying" - unforgettable rightaway. And later he presented some of his wellknown hits like "Suffer in the ghetto" and "Jah light" where people did sing along - even the versions were fascinating fresh. Some untouchable bongoplay inbetween and - how could it be diffrend- some one-in-the-world whistlings. The audience honoured this with standing whistling ovations . It was an really good positive reggae vibes all over. The Bersenbrück Reggae Jam is certainly the place to be! http://www.geocities.com/reggaewhistler Germany based TV-show since 10 years weekly, now also online wednesdays and thursdays, look out for some clips of the same showcase in the next weeks. Date: Tue, 19 Aug 2003 19:35:16 -0700 From: molinus WOW!!!!!!!! This has been an unbelievable past five days! Last week, my dear friend and music associate, Ed B. Townsend passed on to Zion after a heart attack on Tuesday morning at 74. He and my son share the same birthday, April 16. He wrote and produced over 200 songs for some of the biggest names in music history including, "Let's Get It On" with Marvin Gaye and, "For Your Love". Both Billboard number one hits. The past four years, I had a lead part in his production, "Rehabilitation: Been There! Done That!" which involved his close friends, Dick Clark and Quincy Jones, as well as hundreds of other music legends. Tomorrow is his funeral. It is being held at the Riverside, CA Salvation Army at 1pm. 3695 First St. The viewing is from 11am to 1pm. It is open to the public and if you are near you will see what a great man he really was! Friday night at Hollywood Park Casino was so irie!! Seemed like the show wasn't going to draw a crowd and then....like an explosion, the place filled quick and the show began! Chronic Band was tight, backing Tinga Stewart and Flourgon. The crowd was skankin' and singin' and then Sanchez took the mic and made us remember how truly talented he is as a singer and performer. He wore a powder blue outfit fro head to toe...It was such a good vibe! Gt International provided the opening music...sweet! Many thanks to Pupa Curly of Seabreeze Records for giving such a fine show, we'll all remember long time! Saturday, we celebrated the honorable Marcus Garvey at Rasta International Marcus Garvey Cultural Center. Stonie had an outstanding sound crew and LaDeeDred's band opened. I played two solo pieces to track and got them screaming for more. "Life In The Arena" is very popular and this crowd truly apprecialoved my oboe playing. LaDeeDred asked me to please sit in with her band and it was truly irie! Saw lots of people I hadn't seen and the children were skanking all over the place which made me very happy. Following LaDeeDred who brought the house down, was one of my favorite groups, Boom Shaka. They sounded so smooth and it is always great to hear them again! Right after "Ganja Discrimination" the current went out!!! That was unfortunate as we were all really getting into the glorious vibes of Trevy, Lesterfari, Dre, Bassie, Shakaman and Rootsmon. LaDeeDred has invited me to perform with her next month (Sept 6) at Celebrity Center in Hollywood with Ras Michael and others at her own event! I left the center at 1am after Junior blessed us with his soundsystem of greatest hits! Sunday noon, I arrived at Maple Drive Restaurant in Beverly Hills to sit in with Phil Wright (Gildo subbed), Louie Spears and Donald Dean for their recently added Sunday Brunch. We played an unplugged set and the restuarant wants to give me my own night!! The entire weekend seemed so surreal... Sunday morning, I got a call to come to New York City to meet with Chris Chin of VP Records for Beres Hammond, Buju Banton and Sizzla's Show at Keystone Park Sept. 14!!! We've been discussing some future collaborations for a little over a year and to get the call made me jump up and down and I'm sure you can know what an honor this invite was for me... Last night was Luciano's inspirational show. I cried when Dean Fraser's opening set included his spiritual version of Bob's, "Redemption Song". Jah Messenjah was superb! Jah Mikey General was outstanding....and Luci, what can I say. He is truly one artist who always takes me to the next level! I had a chance to see everyone after the show as well and both Luci and Mikey signed the most touching messages on my CD and picture! I am off to see my friends, Billy Mitchell and John Bolivar play tonight. It is likely they'll ask me to sit in as they both love the oboe so. I worked with both of them this year and love their energy!! I'm taking my Japanese student, Kyoko and plan to dance a storm with 79 year old Brown Sugar as John always has the joint jumpin'! Rehearsing this week with my 12 pc., Dub Kinetics (Thurs) and LaDeeDred's Band (Fri). People, I give thanks for your inspiration and have accepted Jah fully into my life. It was Jah's message through David Hinds that saved my life eleven years ago. "Life. life without music, I can't cope..." Luci sang so many empowering songs. Ivanna was there and the most professional MC Mr. Copeland recognized her and "her commitment to come out to support Reggae in her wheelchair" I could see her glee all the way from the VIP table in the balcony! Got to spend some time with the crew back at the Holiday Inn. Makaida does such a wonderful job of accomodating the finest acts as they come through. Dean and I spent hours discussing music, our dear friend Joe Higgs and he gave me the utmost of respect for being an oboe player!! We both love Ronnie Laws and he is very interested in working with me to make music soon come. Well, many thanks to all those who've posted reviews and especially Jah Mikey General for his insightful journal on the road. Felt like I was walking onto the set of a movie... and it was my true life! Praise Jah! Big up to sistren Zema and Tchiya Ahmet on their new and very beautiful releases! Well, need to run but will get to sleep in a minute tomorrow before Marvin Marshall (Motown arranger) meets me to ride out to say goodbye to Ed. There is a fabulous picture I took of Ed and his daughter Kathy three years ago after a show at my yahoo club. My children were sad, especially Lincoln. ALL the kids loved Ed!!!! We were truly blessed to have him as long as we did!!! Big Pappa, you will live in my heart iternal! Give thanks for your mentoring. We also lost Brother Trashy P this week in an LA Hospital. I'm sure many of you knew him. He'd just been to my home two months ago. He gave me a beautiful CD of Reggae Hits he'd selected himself. Fly away home, P.
