PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2003 06:14:08 -0400 From: Nan Lewis Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide www.reggaeambassadors.org RAW Board Recognizes Kyle Russell (RAW #238) For Outstanding Commitment to RAW August 22, 2003 - The Board of Directors of Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide (RAW) recently convened via e-mail to discuss recognizing Kyle Russell (RAW #238) for his outstanding contributions to RAW. Russell, also a Board member, single-handedly took on the massive project to organize, coordinate, and supervise the RAW Conference ("RAW03") in Boston in late June. RAW03 was held in conjunction with the KRucial Roots Reggae Festival, also produced by Russell. RAW03 events included daily presentations and discussions regarding RAW's 10 year history, its present status, and goals for its future, as well as evening concerts featuring RAW performing artists. It is important to note that Russell opted to financially back RAW03, except for minimal financial assistance from RAW for the printing of flyers and new membership applications - both of which can be used by RAW in the future - and some postage costs. By unanimous Board decision, it was agreed to: - reimburse Russell for a portion of his financial losses for RAW03. The amount selected was an average of the Board members' suggestions, and - award a tangible expression of RAW's appreciation. On the final day of RAW03, Russell was presented with a lawn chair with red, gold, and green macramé. The chair was made by Joanie Pearson (RAW #693). Tom Pearson (RAW #33), RAW's Executive Director, spoke for the entire Board of Directors when he said, "It's heartwarming to see how much one RAW member can do for the organization! Kyle took on a huge project, and with determination and professionalism, he put together an excellent RAW Conference & Showcase." Pearson continued that, "Because of Kyle's efforts, RAW membership doubled in Massachussetts and South Carolina, and the first members representing Rhode Island and New Hampshire joined RAW. New life has been breathed into the organization, and I'm looking forward to continued discussions about developing regional RAW chapters, which will continue to Forward the Reggae Vibe - Everytime!" A review of the RAW03 Conference will be posted on www.reggaeambassadors.org (under "RAW NEWS" on the right side of the home page) in the near future. # # # # # -Nan Lewis (RAW #72) Board of Directors, PR & Media Coordinator [3]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Jeanette Smith (#1421) Subject: Tour Journal Excerpt from Mikey General Date: Wed, 20 Aug 2003 07:30:02 -0400 From: Stone Tiger Complete journal available at http://www.stonetigerentertainmentgroup.com/blogger.html 08-19-03 Truckee has always been a sentimental spot for us. We have been working with the promoter, Renegade Promotions, for many years, so we were looking forward to doing the show. It was a daytime show - a festival - and we reached there about 7:30 and right away, we started. The place looked sparse when we first arrived but by the time I started singing, people were arriving. It was a beautiful vibration because the stage was right in front - we could walk right up to the people and almost touch them so that was very good - it felt very intimate with the audience. Jah Messenjah Band were in excellent form and Dean Fraser, the maestro, blew away the people as usual. My set was a bit short as at Truckee they have a strict curfew and we were a bit late starting. I sang about four songs which were well received. Luciano was in peak form working the crowd and at one stage, I left the back stage area and went into the audience to feel the vibration - it was energetic and uplifting. The audience was very receptive and there were a lot of families - kids, parents, and even grandparents. This is the power of Jah music. It crosses all age barriers, all classes and all creeds. >From early in the tour, I've been hearing about Mt. Shasta and I wondered what was so special about the place -- even the journey there was breathtaking. America is a beautiful country with very beautiful natural sights - lots of hills, lots of greens, lots of valleys, and lot of rivers. I think people need to take time and drive more in the countryside and explore all of this natural beauty - they must leave the city and see how good God is to America. Mt. Shasta is a beautiful place. As we reached, we saw the peak which they call Eureka and Native Americans say is a sacred place. The air is rarified up there so we had to prepare ourselves by meditating and making sure we didn't overexert ourselves prior to the show. Prezident Brown was there the night before and when we appeared, Eek-A-Mouse was the other featured artist along with myself, Dean Fraser, and Luciano. Eek-A-Mouse did a good job and had the crowd calling for more. We started to work at about twelve o'clock. It was wonderful. Mt. Shasta really has a real carnival-festival vibe. There were people selling goods at their stalls and a lot of positive energy. Mr. Copeland Forbes introduced the JahMessenjah Band than Mr. Dean Fraser and than Mikey General. While I was working, I had to remember that the air up there is rarified and I tried to not exert myself as I usually do and to concentrate on singing and getting the notes out there. People were very receptive to "Exalt Jah" and the other songs that I performed. I also saw that the people were real rootical and cultural. It was a good job by Renegade Promotions. They say when they usually do these concerts, people usually walk out on the last act but people stayed for Luciano. I don't want to seem like I'm repeating myself, but the band does get better with every show. We left for San Francisco early in the morning. It was good vibes on the way down; we were sightseeing and resting. We reached San Francisco about 4 o'clock where we checked into our rooms and got ourselves ready to perform Jah works. San Francisco has always been a special town for us. The people there seem to love this conscious message and we are always well-received. We also saw many of our old friends whom we have been meeting over the years. The show was at Slims and was a very, very good show - the vibrations - the acoustics in Slims are very good. When we can hear ourselves on stage, it enables us to perform and sing better so everyone was in peak form. Slims was packed for a Sunday night. >From when we entered the place, we could tell that it was going to be a good night. As usual, Mr. Copeland Forbes performed mc duties and Dean Fraser was wonderful. I performed five songs including "Exalt Jah" which was well-received. And Luciano, when he was finished, was wet from head to toe. The energy we get from the people - we give it back in return so working on stage to us is not a job, it's our joy. After the show, we signed autographs as usual as we like to keep in contact and leave a message with our fans letting them know how much we love and apprecia-love them. Many of the people there told me that they saw the journal that we are doing at Stone Tiger and told me how they look forward to hearing about the tour. We give thanks for their attention and for the love they have shown us over the years and we ask Jah to bless and keep them. We left early that morning for the long drive to Los Angeles. Like San Francisco, LA is a very special place. To be frank, the whole of California truly is. Californians, to me, seem to be very rootical, grounded and spiritual people. Probably not all of them are but most of them who come to reggae shows appear to be like-minded. It probably has to do with the best herb in the USA. The people really like the reggae music. The show was at the House of Blues off the Sunset Strip. Man, what a show. There were a lot of Jamaicans there, but the native LA people, of which there were many, were so much into the music and into the message of the music. I met AnJahla from Booyakah Magazine - she's a cheerful soul. Her magazine is very interesting too. The show was dynamite, the people were very receptive, and the mixture of the crowd was as diverse as it could get. They said it was a good crowd for a Monday night. From start to finish, the JahMessenjah family was in top form feeding off the energy of the people until it crescendoed with Luciano. Dean Fraser's set was well-received as was my set which included "Exalt Jah." I saw Peter Schwartz from The Agency Group and I really had to congratulate him for the good work that he has done in helping us on the Serve Jah/Exalt Jah tour. The show finished at one o'clock where we signed autographs and interacted with our friends. We saw old friends of ours -- Nevada Joe, Charlie Pride and others who were very glad to see us. One of the best things to know when we finish a show every night is that the people come to us and say that this is one of the best shows that they have every seen. It gives me great pleasure in my heart to know that the people apprecia-love the music to such an extent. We left early this morning and headed to San Diego. I am about to get ready for the show and am holding a meditation and preparing myself right now. This year’s event will focus on the need for a non-violent world, and has taken on the name One Love Peace Festival, named after Bob Marley’s famous One Love Peace Concert, held in Jamaica in 1978. Marley’s familiar lyrics “One Love. One Heart. Let’s get together and feel alright,” have become recognizable by people of all races and nationalities, and the One Love Peace Festival hopes to exemplify this phrase and serve as a day of community building for Fredericksburg, VA, as we together enjoy a day of peace, love, and unity among all people. The highlight of this year’s festival will be Jamaican Reggae Artist, Abijah and American author and guest speaker, Robert Roskind. A student of multiple art forms and a culture singer, Abijah has made a name for himself on the international reggae scene with uplifting, original songs, including his hit “Revelation” which stayed on the top of the charts in Jamaica for over 30 weeks. With a 3-album deal with VP Records under his belt, and a vocal style and musical message reminiscent of Bob Marley, Abijah is on his way to international stardom. Robert Roskind, author of books "Rasta Heart: Journey into One Love" and “Gathering of the Healers” has been at the forefront of the universal message of peace and unity through all nations. In 2002, Robert, along with his wife, organized 30 "One Love" concerts throughout Jamaica, with performing artist Abijah. Mr. Roskind will be a guest speaker at this year’s festival. This year’s event includes several talented regional and international reggae musicians & DJs, peace activists and public speakers, grassroots organizations, vegetarian and all-natural food and beverages, art & craft vendors, all day drum circle, and a no drug/no alcohol family environment. The festival site at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds is centrally located and easily accessible from Interstate-95. Approximately an hour from our nation’ s capital of Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Charlottesville, it’s becoming a great spot to bring together reggae communities from all regions of Virginia. Reggae has always been music with a message, and bringing consciousness to the people is its foundation and legacy. Through love and understanding, reggae breaks down barriers and invites peace and unity as a way of life. The One Love Peace Festival hopes to bring together people from the greater Fredericksburg area and surrounding towns to enjoy a day of great music, feel good food, and community building. All things positive are embodied in reggae culture, so come out and experience the reggae vibe! He could be a minister addressing his congregation, or a lion tamer entering the animal ring. Silence overcomes the crowd, waiting on his every word, longing to hear words of inspiration and unity. The pressure is great for Luciano to keep a positive attitude day in and day out, but there's never any doubt that he's guided by a higher force. His unrelenting faith comes through in his music, and sure enough, his music lives up to its reputation leaving his fans a little lighter and a lot brighter as they go out into the world. Luciano, Mikey General, saxophonist Dean Fraser, and the Jah Messenjah Band graced the Slim's Nightclub stage in San Francisco on Sunday, August 17, 2003, the birthday of UNIA founder Marcus Mosiah Garvey. It was an important day for the crew on the twenty-second date of their 38-date tour, not only because of Marcus Garvey's birthday, but because it had been a year and a half since they had played in San Francisco, where they have a powerfully strong fan-base. Slim's was packed. By the evening's end, the show was a confirmed sellout. Manager Copeland Forbes was the MC for the night, something which he has done for years. He introduced world-renowned saxophonist, Dean Fraser, who has been working with Luciano since his debut album, "Where There Is Life," in 1995. Prior to the show, I was clued-in that Fraser performs a wonderful rendition of Bob Marley's "Redemption Song," with which I agreed. The saxophone to Fraser is like an extra appendage, the instrument looks so comfortable around his neck that it seems it belongs there permanently. He is also adept at moving between soprano and alto saxes--not an easy feat, as the embouchure must be much tighter for the soprano--and he gets a rich, full sound out of both instruments. Mikey General, who is currently promoting his album "Exalt Jah," was up next. He looked happier and healthier than I've ever seen him, which must be attributed to his recent domino pastime! In all seriousness, Mikey's tenor voice was strong and confident and he ruled the place with the title-track, "Exalt Jah" and righteous anthem, "Sinners." Until recently, Mikey had been in Luciano's shadow, but he is really coming into his own, both with his voice, his stage presence, and his offstage manner. He is always gracious, friendly and professional, which I find refreshing and admirable. Mikey paved the way for the Messenjah himself, who was in top form. As I watched Luciano's face light up, I thought about how cleansing and therapeutic it must be to sing uplifting tunes all of the time. For example, the lyrics, "Even though they try to push me aside, I'll never give up my pride," is an empowering mantra not just to uplift the audience, but a deep affirmation of the singer's own purpose and worth. So many times you hear singers say, "The music keeps me sane," and perhaps this is what they're talking about. Luciano tore through new and old classics, bouncing and dancing around the stage with every ounce of energy in his body. The band was incredibly tight, although at times they were so strong it was hard to hear Luciano's voice. When I mentioned how impressed I was with the band, stable mate and singer Milton Blake who is currently in Jamaica responded, "They've been working really hard they've been in rehearsal every single day." The band did a version of "Messenger" to a new beat and performed songs from every Luciano erafrom CDs "Where There Is Life" to his latest release "Serve Jah." When it was time for the song "One Way Ticket," Luciano invited two dancers on stage, both dressed in orange African attire. They were the most colorful part of the show as the three backup singers and the band wore black, Mikey General wore white, and Luciano wore beige quasi-military garb. A surprise guest, the Jamaican Minister of Industry & Tourism Honorable Aloun Ndombet-Assamba, was in the house. She was invited the night before to speak at the Jamaica Association of Northern California's celebration of the 41st anniversary of Jamaica's independence, "When I heard Luciano was in town tonight, I couldn't miss it!" she told the crowd. When Luciano gave her the spotlight, she thanked the JANC and encouraged everyone in the audience to visit Jamaica because of all it had to offer. Luciano offered no comment to her solicitation, and treated her warmly. A blazing rendition of "Serve Jah," the title track of his most recent VP Records' release, was the best showcase of the band's talents. The band sounded full, together, and completely on point. I knew it was a successful night when I looked around and saw the Jamaican elders, who normally stand in the back and cautiously bob their heads, dancing and smiling with abandon! Luciano sang a medley of his older tunes like "It's Me Again Jah," "Who Could It Be" and many others that rang familiar to everyone in the crowd. One of the highlights for me was when Luciano paid tribute to the late Inner Circle vocalist, Jacob Miller. Miller had such a distinct sound and was highly underrated during his lifetime, that it was nice to see Luciano pay respect to the great talent by emulating his sound. To this day, the Jacob Miller Songbook, "Chapter A Day" is still one of my all-time favorite discs, and includes a remix of "Forward Jah Jah Children" where Luciano sings in tandem with the recorded Miller vocals. Perhaps the biggest forward came with the first few notes of Peter Tosh's "Legalize It," a song Luciano has been doing in concert for a couple of years. Any ganja-themed song gets a rousing response from the Slim's crowd, which at this point was enveloped in a thick cloud of smoke. One of Luciano's skills is his ability to identify top talent. A couple of years ago, he severed ties with the Firehouse Crew and the gifted female backing vocalists, the Daffodils. He has found equal talent in the voices of Sisters Rochelle, Sharron, and Yvonne. Luciano sang a duet with Sister Rochelle, "the tiny woman with the huge voice!" Her low singing voice was strong and soulful; she then burst out with her deejay stylings as well! The comparison to Tanya Stephens came quickly to mind. Bassey Jah Lloyd also got a solo opportunity, and showed the crowd that the energy definitely comes from the bottom. Luciano shifted gears from Tosh to Marley and performed a solo version of "Redemption Song" with his guitara tape collector's dream. The song brought the concert full circle from Dean Fraser's earlier emotional rendition. I thought it was the show's closing, but Luci brought the band back for an encore set of rousing rhythms and a very climactic finale. Luciano has grown from the "new kid on the block" into a solid, modern roots reggae statesman. One thing I know for sure is that I went home feeling much better than when I walked into Slim's. I was refreshed, rejuvenated, and the music had reconnected me with the spiritual world. I draw great comfort knowing that the Messenjah will always be there to teach me about roots and culture, "and tell the massive fi remember Jah." That's all we a deal with, Iyah! Over and over again Mikey Dread keeps ringing true to his song "Choose me." If you choose him you choose a good thing Mikey Dread. Last Sunday Fresno California Tower District, Mikey was probably wishing he was singing his other hit song "S.W.A.l.K." where his girl had left him-walked. (smile). Word out of California is that Mikey had only briefly taken the stage and performed three songs, when fans stormed the stage, the results were three (fan) ladies, joining Mikey on stage with one holding dearly to his pant leg and had to be escorted off the stage. Electrifying and poised entertainer he his, Mikey kept on singing with the fan holding on! That's entertainment! The show must go on. It is safe to say that Mikey Dread the Rasta who is in Control as the Dread at the Controls can certainly spice up any EVENT! We pinned him spicy Mikey many months ago and low and behold he has been consistently spicing up the Reggae Circuit worldwide! In Europe people stood around in the Rain to see him, in California they are jumping on the stage to touch him. Mikey Dread has a definite Original Jamaican Rasta Reggae energy here, as M. C. Hammer would say "You can't touch him!" Mikey is too spicy for words. Bringing to you live and direct the original Jamaican Reggae yard vibes-Mikey Dread. Not only is he spicing up the West Coast and Europe, check out the article in the Jamaican Newspaper - The Weekly Star August 17-13, 2003. Recapping the New England Reggae Festival, Writer: Lauren Drummond wrote: "Anthem was in great form as they performed tracks from their new album, "Good to be there." "Rock me," and others. But it was the penultimate performer, Mikey Dread who set the place on fire and leaving the audience crying for more. Hewas well received. This was Mikey Dread's first time at the festival, and he showed the audience whey he was named "Dread at the Controls." As soon as he went into his many classics, which incorporated punk, rock and reggae, the crowd rushed to the front of the stage and screamed throughout his set. Mikey Dread backed up by his band, Dread at the Controls, and songs as "Happy family," and others. "I love the response that I got from the audience, ' said Mikey Dread after a spectacular performance. "it was powerful and I was convinced when everyone rushed to the front of the stage that it was gonna be like in California. Hawaii or Europe. That is it was gonna be off the hook!!!"
