PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! INFORMATION: Last Day Saloon – 707-545-2343 or www.lastdaysaloon.com DJ Sister Yasmin – 707-884-4703 or sisteryasmin@hotmail.com BAND BIOS PREZIDENT BROWN, who was born Fitz Albert Cotterell in the green hills of Clarendon, Jamaica, started chanting upon the mic at a tender age. His mother called him “Junior Ranking” and he was later known as “Slim Brown” as a teenager because his style resembled his long-time idol U Brown, who was a great inspiration to him. The biggest and most formative influence for the Junior MC was producer and sound system operator, Jack Ruby, prominent in the Ocho Rios music scene at that time. Ruby saw something special in him and took the fatherless Slim Brown under his wing, re-christened him Prezident Brown and appointed him resident M.C. of his Hi-Power Sound System, traveling world wide. After the sound system era changed following Jack Ruby’s death in 1989, Prezident Brown began recording with various well-known Jamaican labels including X-Rated (now World Of Music) and his career took off in Europe, and later in the United States. Conscious Dancehall music was coming into its stride and Prezident Brown was a rising star in this new climate. He is a champion in the new roots and reality consciousness music and he entertains, informs and inspires. His message is pure Rasta conscious vibes and his music speaks a universal language. At this performance at the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa on Thursday, September 11, 2003, Prezident Brown will be backed by the Solid Foundation Band, a wonderful band from Jamaica. YELLOWMAN, also known as KING YELLOW, is the most widely known international Reggae Dancehall ambassador. His albums have always been supported by the fame he created and maintains by his hard work and tireless U.S. and worldwide tours in the face of all his physical adversity. Born in Kingston, Jamaica in 1956 as Winston Foster, the albino child was institutionalized and forced to attend special schools, due to his skin condition. Rather than sink into self-pity, Winston took on the nickname “Yellowman” and began to pull himself up. Even his simultaneous battles with throat and skin cancer have not kept him down. Yellowman began his rise to fame in the 1970’s when “toasting”, now called DJing, was on the rise. Much of the popularity of this Jamaican music, which became the basis of Rap and Hip Hop, can give its modern credits to innovators such as Yellowman. He started out working with the Gemini Sound system, where he ruled the dances with his “slack” (sexually explicit) and comedic lyrics. From there he became the undisputed “King Of Dancehall” and has continually been asked to work with Jamaica’s top producers, creating many well-known hits over the years. Like many Reggae artists, Yellowman was inspired at an early age by classic American R&B and Blues artists, and this can be heard in his music. Yellowman’s lyrics in recent years reflect a mature consciousness and cleaner lyrics on his more recent albums and at stage shows. In Jamaica an artist is either classic or what’s hot now. Yellowman proves he can be both at the same time. He well-loved and is known world-wide for his witty and relevant social commentary, infectious melodies, danceable rhythms and pure fun. The SAGITTARIUS BAND is one of Jamaica’s premiere, popular, proficient and absolutely professional backing bands. So, as you can see, SEPTEMBER is REGGAE MONTH at the LAST DAY SALOON in Santa Rosa! Summer may be over but Reggae Music is going strong at this venue. Join us for both of these fine shows and get your Reggae groove on! [5]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Robert Roskind (# Subject: ROSKINDS & ABIJAH AT HOPI RESERVATION & NC,VA & AR--ONE LOVE CONCERTS From: Greetings, everyone: Last year, Julia and I were given a vision to organize "Fires of Forgiveness:The Healing of the Nation" concerts on the Hopi Indian Reservation in Arizona. On Sept. 12 this vision will become a reality. What better way to begin our national healing than with our "first people" who were known as the most peaceful and gentle of all the Native American Tribes. Jamaican recording artist Abijah, a truly conscious, One Love singer and songwriter, will be appearing at the Hopi concert. Then Abijah, Julia and I will be take the concert on tour to three additional states--VA, NC, and AR (see schedule below). Our band will be The Lions of Israel from Fayetteville, AR, an excellent reggae group who recently opened for both Luciano and Ziggy Marley (www.lionsofisrael.com). We will begin our tour on the Hopi Indian Reservation. Six free concerts is our gift to all the Hopi schools on Sept. 10, 11, and 12.. There will also be a concert on Sept.12 at 8PM at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Hall that will be open to the public. Please join us if you can. This is a very special part of our journey as the 900-year-old Hopi prophecy states that the purification of the planet will begin with the purification of their tribe. Many of the Hopi youths no longer know of this ancient prophecy. Karen Abieta (Sister Parrott), the local reggae DJ, has been working with us to organize these concerts. Also, Zema, another conscious reggae artist, will be appearing at our Hopiland concert (www.zemazema.com). While there, we will be encouraging the students to activate this tribal healing through their individual acts of One Love and forgiveness. This is the same message that we brought to the students in Jamaica, where we have held 30 similar concerts to over 30,000 youths since January. (The crime indexes have been dropping since then.) Below are the complete "prophecies, warnings and instructions" of the Hopi. Every prophecy to date has come true. The Traditionalist Hopis have held this information secret for 900 years until they released it to the public in 1996, as instructed by the prophecy. It's a fascinating read. Also, we now have a new site explaining these concerts, along with video footage of some of our concerts with Abijah in Jamaica. The Website is: http://www.rastaheart.com/rastaheart/one_love_concerts.html There will also be concerts at colleges, reggae festivals and clubs in Virginia, Arkansas and North Carolina. Our message will be the same at each concert though it will be modified to suit the audience. Please join us if you are in any of these areas (see schedule below). If you are interesting in organizing similar concerts in your area, please contact us. Together they have the unique ability to capture the hearts and attention of any audience and hold on to it. It proves that the message must be in their music, spreading the Love that only Inner Visions are capable of. Proving without a doubt that they are the Caribbean Masters of Reggae! INNER VISIONS THE BIOGRAPHY St. John, a quaint little island in the Northeastern Caribbean, is home to the US. Virgin Islands best kept secret. Inner Visions, as they are called, has been in existence for over 20 years. Fighting hard to overcome a dominant calypso music infested environment was not easy. Phillip Pickering and Paul Samms are the only two remaining members of "Prophecy," (Inner Visions' previous name). Later Alvin Pickering, who would make the trio complete, would join them. Today however, their music has transcended all barriers, and the respect they craved for so long has finally surfaced. Reggae by any stretch of the imagination is not easy to master, but Inner Visions has managed to learn and to maintain its authenticity and criteria while taking the music to a different level. Good song writing and strong vocals has always been their greatest asset. Much better live than with individual track recordings, this group, when given an audience, comes alive. Always ready to do benefits for worthwhile causes, Inner Visions has always been in the foreground in a fundraising capacity. Their motto is "love one another now." After seventeen years Inner Visions recorded their very first big production entitled "Love One Another." The title track raced up local charts and rested comfortably at number two on at least one major radio station. Four years later, proud of their hard work and achievement they embarked on a second recording venture. They recorded a single which was released September of 1999. The single Shala-La spent six weeks on three local stations at the number one position. One year later Inner Visions was found in the recording studio cranking out their "Spiritual Dancer" CD, and again Shala-la (the remix) hit the charts. Of the top one hundred songs requested and played for the year 2000, Shala-La placed at number ten. Other songs on "Spiritual Dancer" also seemed poised to dominate local airwaves. Now in 2003 not only does the Love one another CD along with Shala la have continued to dominate international airwaves, yes I do mean International check out the article in the European magazine of Djembre, they are poised to hit us with their much anticipated new release titled " Street Corner Musicians." Yes, Inner Visions just keep seasoning their own magnificent sounds with more flavor, Inner Visions flavor! http://www.innervisionsreggae.com/ Music update: The much anticipated release of the new Inner Visions compilation CD titled "Street Corner Musicians" are garnering rave reviews worldwide as being the best conscious Reggae CD this year! From "My fathers prayer" to "Hold on to what you got" which were the two most popular cuts of the new CD and holding strong to the Reggae charts nationwide. With cut's growing in popularity "Street corner Musicians" and Ain't it the truth moving up fast as favors. Making this the best Roots Conscious release from the Inner Visions camp!
