PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! Thanks Tom #33 [2]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Dubwize (# Subject: Dubwize Concert Report August 23, Catalyst - Santa Cruz, Dubwize "All Night" Date: Mon, 25 Aug 2003 22:55:04 EDT From: GlenChase@aol.com Thank you RAW, thank you. ...and here is the Dubwize concert report that went out to well over 1,000 dubwize fans signed up on the Dubwize e-mail list: Last nite at the Catalyst, everything glowed. It was as though we had stepped into a magical sphere. A sphere with a fantasy land inside, but real, and with the original beauties of earth and life all around us, and with the music carrying and lifting and immersing us in each. It was frolicking and loving and being free to ride on a magic music carpet that held us securely, yet swooshed us to extreme places of excitement and calm. It was intimate experiences of individual's joy, yet together with the expansive pleasure of being amongst so many. The mind was off this night. The heart was on. With everyone's encouragement, Dubwize joined with us and lead us on a journey. It was absolutely spectacular to be there and be part of it. Including even the chef, who we wouldn't let leave the Catalyst even after his shift had ended, there were over 400 people in attendance. People came from all over the state of California (and even some from out of state!) and each person that was there seemed to be so much a part of this event. The attendance was too large to distribute the e-mail sign up sheets by the two people with the band helping out, but fans on the dance floor grabbed clip boards from the stage and passed them around with the sign up sheets and 75 new fans added their names to the list, really nice people. There are two live Dubwize cd's (Moe's Alley, Big Sur) and they had sold out at 9 consecutive shows. These are the Dubwize cd's that sound so good and are made one-at-a-time on high fidelity equipment. No money is made on them, but the reward is the pleasure that they deliver. A stack of 25, the most ever, were made for this show, and they sold out early in the evening. At Pier 23 on August 9, the crowd was stunned. You could feel a physical impact/explosion in your chest and being, and from the bottom of our feet to the top of our head. Saturday night, August 23 at the Catalyst was a glow that lifted us and carried us and loved us with time unlimited and with no where else to be. If you were one who was there Saturday night, apologies for these inadequate words to attempt to describe the experience. You are enthusiastically telling your friends about Dubwize and bringing them along. It is so wonderful to see. As we continue along, please remember always to tell your friends that each person in front of them, that each person behind them, and that each person on their sides at these concerts are their good friends, or friends of friends of their good friends. As the numbers get larger coming to see and experience this Dubwize phenomenon, it could be difficult to maintain the warmth and friendships amongst us in the crowd. But with those who were there Saturday night, it will be easy. We only must remember to welcome those we have not seen before, and the joy will spread. Established star concerts are great, but nothing compares to the concerts when a group is bursting out and stunning audiences and surprising themselves. This is happening NOW with Dubwize. Saturday, August 23, The Dubwize "All Night" Concert, at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz, now has its very special place in history as one of the very finest combinations of music and life ever, and you made that happen. Saturday, September 6, Pier 23 - San Francisco: Dubwize [3]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Natural Mystics Reggae Shop (#1583) Subject: One Love Peace Festival Date: Tue, 26 Aug 2003 13:30:20 -0400 From: Natural Mystics One Love Peace Festival 12-9pm Sunday, September 14, 2003 Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA Natural Mystics Reggae Shop has been hosting an annual reggae festival for the last three years, in its hometown of Fredericksburg, VA, to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic in Africa. This year’s event will focus on the need for a non-violent world, and has taken on the name One Love Peace Festival, named after Bob Marley’s famous One Love Peace Concert, held in Jamaica in 1978. Marley’s familiar lyrics “One Love. One Heart. Let’s get together and feel alright,” have become recognizable by people of all races and nationalities, and the One Love Peace Festival hopes to exemplify this phrase and serve as a day of community building for Fredericksburg, VA, as we together enjoy a day of peace, love, and unity among all people. The highlight of this year’s festival will be Jamaican Reggae Artist, Abijah and American author and guest speaker, Robert Roskind. A student of multiple art forms and a culture singer, Abijah has made a name for himself on the international reggae scene with uplifting, original songs, including his hit “Revelation” which stayed on the top of the charts in Jamaica for over 30 weeks. With a 3-album deal with VP Records under his belt, and a vocal style and musical message reminiscent of Bob Marley, Abijah is on his way to international stardom. Robert Roskind, author of books "Rasta Heart: Journey into One Love" and “Gathering of the Healers” has been at the forefront of the universal message of peace and unity through all nations. In 2002, Robert, along with his wife, organized 30 "One Love" concerts throughout Jamaica, with performing artist Abijah. Mr. Roskind will be a guest speaker at this year’s festival. This year’s event includes several talented regional and international reggae musicians & DJs, peace activists and public speakers, grassroots organizations, vegetarian and all-natural food and beverages, art & craft vendors, all day drum circle, and a no drug/no alcohol family environment. The festival site at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds is centrally located and easily accessible from Interstate-95. Approximately an hour from our nation’ s capital of Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Charlottesville, it’s becoming a great spot to bring together reggae communities from all regions of Virginia. Reggae has always been music with a message, and bringing consciousness to the people is its foundation and legacy. Through love and understanding, reggae breaks down barriers and invites peace and unity as a way of life. The One Love Peace Festival hopes to bring together people from the greater Fredericksburg area and surrounding towns to enjoy a day of great music, feel good food, and community building. All things positive are embodied in reggae culture, so come out and join us on Sunday, September 14, 2003 and experience the reggae vibe! Performing Bands include: Jerrod’s Door Foundation Stone JohnStone Crucial Elements Soldiers of Jah Army Jah Works Abijah (with Lions of Israel) Partial proceeds from the event will benefit local charities. This will be the 1st year that the R.A.W. banner will be flown at the Charlemont Fest. R.A.W. is an organization that brings together people involved with reggae music, from the performers, promoters and record labels to DJs and committed reggae fans. In the 21st Annual Bob Marley & the Wailers collector’s edition of The Beat magazine on page 14 there’s a story which should concern all Reggae lovers, "Ring the Alarm: Reggae Grammy an Endangered Species. Calling all Reggae artists! Your chances of ever winning a coveted Grammy for your music are growing slimmer by the day." The Reggae prize, which first was awarded in 1985, could be going the way of the platypus and mammoth elephant. Due to a declining number of submissions over the last few years, reaching a new low in 2002, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences is considering folding the "Best Reggae Album" category into another, perhaps folk, world or R&B. According to many in the industry, there are plenty of Reggae releases, but it seems that few labels take the opportunity to submit them for Grammy consideration. The main reason seems to be a lack of information and outreach on behalf of the Grammies into these sub-cultural communities. It is obviously up to a label or artists themselves to submit a work for consideration, but many artist in these communities—not just Reggae, but hip-hop, folk and other independent-heavy genres—are not aware of the application process and deadlines - where, when and how to submit. Record labels need to contact the Awards department and get registered so that they can get the information on the entry process, then start submitting some entries. Artist also need to become members of the Academy. The Academy automatically reviews categories each year when entries fall below 25 artists. This is the first time in a number of years, if ever, that this category has fallen below the threshold. You can call or write to the Academy office in Santa Monica California. It’s very important that entries be newly recorded, within the past five years and not previously released. They must be released during the eligibility period, October 1, 2002 through September 30, 2003. There is no cost for submission, but they must supply the product. To contact the Grammies: The Recording Academy, 3402 Pico Blvd. Santa Monica, CA. 90405; Attention Awards department (310)-392-3777 ask for the Awards department. Story by John Sutton-Smith This is an open invitation to all committed Reggae fans, Reggae groups, Artists, Promoters, Reggae stores, Record labels, vendors, Studios and Producers. There will be a R.A.W. tent set up with sign-up sheets, promo, merchandise, giveaways, and information d good vibes. This year for the first time we will fly the R.A.W. banner. Mikey and Luci are thoroughly enjoying themselves as talking with the people is what gives them the most pleasure and it's so evident when you read Mikey's journal. Lehbanchuleh is in Jamaica doing some work for Cocoa Tea on an upcoming album and Edi Fitzroy is back in Miami to continue work on an album to be released early next year, "Love the People Want," as well as to finish his track for "The Peter Tosh Tribute Album." He'll be working with some outstanding musicians including Pablove Black from Studio One (bio soon to follow on our site at http://www.stonetiger.net). Additionally, Edi will be available for a chat tomorrow evening at 9:00 pm EST at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/StoneTiger/. It's the first time that we've done something like this and are hoping to use the mic so that you can hear him but do bear with us please if there are any technical difficulties. If all goes well, we should be able to schedule chats with other artists as well. We'll update you more next time on all of the wonderful things that we see happening around us including the wonderful events planned for October in tribute to Peter Tosh, the albums, the works, new artists that we see coming up, and so much more.
