Subject: Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter
Date: August 1, 2003
Greetings all!
In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our
newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines
suggested, and which have been announced many times.
I will REPEAT!
Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send
out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to
restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound,
bells or whistles. No attachments!
Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the
sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR
Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format.
Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none
of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in
WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I
have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting
every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task,
and one which I am simply no longer able to do.
I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive
them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment
forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic
no-frills text.
So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is:
TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT
and NOTHING ELSE!
Thanks Tom #33

The reggae grooves of Peter Tosh appeal to a cross section of music
lovers, which explains why dancehall artist Sean Paul, hip-hop stoners
Cypress Hill and former Guns N' Roses members guitarist Slash, bassist
Duff McKagan and drummer Matt Sorum have all agreed to create Tosh covers
for The Peter Tosh Tribute Album, a toast to the late reggae great.
The album will be out in February, and proceeds will be used to build a
medical clinic, a library, a Tosh museum and mausoleum, and fund a music
initiative in Belmont, Jamaica. In an effort to maximize profits, album
coordinators Mike Malott (a former Tosh promoter) and Tosh's son Dave
have chosen to release the record on reggae indie Stone Tiger instead of
a major label.
The Sean Paul track, "No Nuclear War," will feature vocals and
instrumentation from the original master recording. Cypress Hill will
cover "Legalize It," and the Guns N' Roses survivors, who are currently
playing together in the band Velvet Revolver, have not yet decided what
track they will record.
Also contributing to The Peter Tosh Tribute Album are D.C. hardcore
heroes Bad Brains, who will record "African"; organic rocker Ben Harper,
who'll take on "I Am That I Am"; brother Andrew Tosh, who will tackle
"Get Up, Stand Up"; and bluesman Jimmie Vaughan, who will cover "Stepping
Razor."
In addition, the disc will include several previously released covers.
Eric Clapton's version of "What'cha Gonna Do" was recorded in 1973 and
features Tosh on background vocals. It originally came out on Clapton's
1988 box set, Crossroads. Jerry Garcia's rendition of "Stop That Train"
was released on the 1990 double live album Jerry Garcia Band.
Others appearing on The Peter Tosh Tribute Album include the Motels'
Martha Davis, Bob Andy, Lasana Bandelé, Donald Kinsey, Edi Fitzroy, Tippa
Irie with Better Chemistry, Luciano, Jeffrey Gaines, Lucky Dube, Maxi
Priest, Aswad and David Lindley.
Tosh was born Winston McIntosh on October 19, 1944, in Grange Hill,
Jamaica. At age 15 he left his tiny town to move to Kingston, where he
met Bob Marley, Bunny Wailer and Junior Braithwaite and formed the
Wailers. The group recorded four albums together before Tosh left to
pursue his solo career full-time.
His 1976 debut, Legalize It, showcased his developing interest in
political issues and proved Marley was not the only driving force in the
Wailers. Over the next 11 years, Tosh recorded seven more albums. During
that time he toured with the Rolling Stones and shared a duet with Mick
Jagger on the song "(You Got to Walk and) Don't Look Back."
His career was cut tragically short on September 11, 1987, when former
friend Dennis Lobban and a group of thugs broke into Tosh's Kingston
house and opened fire on Tosh and six of his friends. Tosh was shot in
the head and died, as did two others.
Two Tosh retrospectives, The Essential Peter Tosh: The Columbia Years and
Best of Peter Tosh 1978-1987, were recently released.

From: Rlam
On Friday July 11 at 6: 00 AM, the sounds of
The Ark Band/RAW 1414 were
echoing in the studios of WLWT, Channel 5, NBC in Cincinnati
recording background music for a promotion for the Beach Water Park that
is in Mason, Ohio, just north of Cinncinnati on I-71.
It was a night of little sleep since The Ark Band had opened up
for King Yellowman at Cincinnati's Annies the night before, the second
night in a row for the same duo combination of bands that had performed
in Columbus at the Brickyard.
( Give thanks Yellowman for the multiple bigg ups of The Ark Band from
the stage...yea mon )
The Beach Water Park features reggae and mutiple activities during
the summer. their website is at http://www.thebeachwaterpark.com/
and also http://www.thebeachwaterpark.com/calendar ( and look for the
'reggae fest' link ( click there )
The Ark Band performed at the Beach on Sunday July 27
from 2 to 5 pm on the Kokomo Kove stage in a very exciting, entertaining
and enthusiastic performance.
As drummie Terry says, 'it was 'better' than the Shooters gig at the
Flats in Cleveland on July 13', ( ask the John Brown
Body's fans who came expecting JBB and in a very pleasant surprise 'ran
into'/'discovered' the music
of the Lucian Riddim Twins, Terry and Eustace and other Lucians and USA
musicians who comprise The Ark Band. I&I have now added a new
brand group of fans, :-)
I&I hope to hear from any southern Ohio or any others for that matter
who happen on to the promotion piece on TV. ( respescx )

Wailing Souls - New CD Release & Tour w/ Beres Hammond/Marcia Griffiths
Coming September 2, 2003
from Artists Only! Records
Wailing Souls
Souvenir From Jamaica
The Wailing Souls' return with a solid brand new studio album, Souvenir
>From
Jamaica. From the early days of growing up and singing in the same
Trenchtown
yards in Kingston, Jamaica alongside Bob Marley, Joe Higgs, and others had
started , the veteran multi Grammy® nominated roots reggae duo's longevity
has
come due their adaptability to trends in the music without the compromise
of
their vision. Souvenir From Jamaica, recorded at the famed Tuff Gong
Studios,
has that vision and sound maintaining the group's vital part in reggae
music in
this day and age.
The album was produced by the Souls' Winston "Pipe" Matthews and Lloyd
"Bread" McDonald along with the help of the legendary drum and bass duo of
Sly
Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare in Kingston along with an all-star musician
line-up that firmly plants this record as one of the master works of
their career. The title track of Souvenir from Jamaica featuring up and
coming Jamaican dancehall DJ, Ragga Z, is the first single from the album
and will be accompanied by a music video and promotional vinyl single
serviced to all mainstream niche video shows, radio DJs, and
manistream/Reggae press.
The Wailing Souls join Beres Hammond and Marcia Griffiths on a six week
US/Canada tour starting July 31 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles .

>From Mikey General's Tour Journal at
http://www.stonetigerentertainmentgroup.com/blogger.html
A beautiful occasion it was when we reached S.O.B.'s down in Manhattan.
The show was excellent and the vibes were just right. Rastafarians from
every side of New York came - there was a great mix of people but the
environment was strictly cultural. In the dressing room, I saw Peter
Schwartz from The Agency Group who always has the highest grade - he and
his wife, Michelle, were there and are very excited about the tour and
how well it is going. I saw a lot of old friends who told me how good it
is to have us with them to strengthen them - these days, we need Jah
Spirit more than ever. The show began with the Jah Messenjah Band
performing an instrumental, than Dean Frasier and than Mikey General. The
crowd was very receptive to my vibration and it made me feel good.
Luciano was awesome as usual - sometimes working the crowd into a frenzy.
We did the finale of "Reggae in Unity" with Luciano and myself singing
together - the crowd really loved it! I'm so glad to be able to be on the
road to see my fans but most of all, to do God's work. The people are the
backbone of everything we do.
The next day, we went to Martha's Vineyard off the coast of
Massachusetts. We took the ferry - it was beautiful with the air so fresh
and clean - it was an energy-giving "prana." Luciano always does deep
breathing as he believes in the power of it so while we were on the
ferry, we did deep breathing exercises together. Also, on the ferry, I
asked Luciano if he thought that we would see any Jamaican people over at
Martha's Vineyard. I was shocked when we got there - there were 1000s of
Jamaicans there as there is a hotel program where they work in they work
in the many hotels on Martha's Vineyard. The presence of Jamaican people
at our concerts strengthens us as it makes us realize that Jamaican
people are everywhere. Everywhere they go, they are ambassadors for us,
some are good and some are bad. But when we look around and see them in
every corner, we realize that people know and accept our culture and it
makes it easier for us to disseminate the message.
On the other side, when we reached to Martha's Vineyard, while going up
in the taxi to the venue, we were told by the driver Mike that the
population in Martha's Vineyard is only 19,000 in the summer but swells
to 120,000 in the summer - nearly a 600% increase! This has been one of
the best shows on the tour so far - all have been good but this is one of
the best. The people were very receptive and when it was time for curfew,
we could see the people weren't ready to leave yet. Environment has a lot
to do with people and the way they move and there has a real island vibe,
almost Caribbean. We stayed around until this morning to do a little
shopping and than took back the ferry.
I'm really grateful to the Almighty for the privilege to be a messenger
for him. I just ask him to continue to bless me and keep me so that I can
continue to do this job - working for God and the people. Jah Bless.
Next stop, Rhode Island!

From: molinus
Greetings RAW,
Just wanted to advise you to take notice for Beres Hammond and Friends
Tour!! It started here in Los Angeles at the Greek and will be someplace
near you soon. Beres and Marcia are their exceptionally professional
selves in this show!
They had the audience hanging on every single note!! Opening for them was
the Wailing Souls (absolutely one of Bob Marley's favorite bands) with
their new release, "Souvenir From Jamaica" (AO!) another excellent album
true to the quality of past releases if not better! Shared it with my
first graders who unanimously decided they loved, every track!
(Slip and Slide was their favorite riddim)
Release date is September 2.
Best part of Bread and Pipe's set was skanking back stage with Marcia who
is obviously one of Wailing Souls biggest fans!
Track titles:
1. Souvenir From Jamaica (featuring Ragga Z)
2. Play the Tape
3. Slip and Slide (the class favorite!)
4. I Shall Not Want
5. Got To Move
6. You Are The Woman
7. World Abomination
8. Nothing Comes Easy
9. Bus Stop
10. Pacifier
11. Back Door
12. Make A Change
They also autographed a photo and set list,
on stage they played (backed by Jimmy Peart and the Harmony House Band:
Wailing Souls SET LIST:
Son of A Gun
Jah Jah Give Us Life
Things & Time
Old Broom
Firehouse Rock
Feel the Spirit
World Abomination
Souvenir From Jamaica
Picky Picky Head
Shark Attack
Na Na Na Na Na
The Show began at 7pm prompt and since it was at the Greek the crowd
trickled in slowly as they fought the deadlocked rush hour traffic to get
there. Greek must stop by 10:30pm on a week night as neighbors are
strictly enforcing curfews and heavy fines are enforced! There was a
break from 9-9:30 and then the Marley Boys came out with their own band
and soothed the crowd with many originals and many covers of their dad's
music including, "So Much Trouble In The World" and "Could You Be
Loved". No one wanted the show to end but it did succinctly at 10:30pm.
The crowd was all smiles as they headed out rocking their heads and
singing choruses of the songs they'd just heard. It was a beautiful
night! We'd have heard much more if the groups weren't limited in the
lengths of their sets due to curfew so I'm sure you'll hear MORE
favorites when they come to your area. To hear so many excellent
musicians in one package is outstanding!! These are the living legends of
Reggae and you'll be grateful you decided to catch this inspiring concert
that perpetuates all good things, Peace, Love and Unity. Beres said it
best as his song ended with the shout, "CEASE FIRE!!!" Special thanks and
healing blessings to Zola Burse who despite major surgery on his foot two
weeks ago in London, managed to rejoin the tour physically as its manager
without skipping a beat!!!
Additionally, all were saddened by the loss of Reggae Souljah Denny
(forgive my spelling) Campbell who passed on to Zion last week after a
two year bout of uterine cancer. She was instrumental in her diligent
work as Tour Manager for Reggae Sunsplash. She will be sadly missed.
Beres spoke a few words on her passing and said, "We are all deeply moved
by her loss, Anna she was an amazing woman!" Beres wanted to know who
was handling my bookings as he and Marcia are big fans of mine. Told him
I am still working independently at this time, haven't signed anything as
yet. He invited me to Jamaica and said he'd like to help me. Told me
early next year is the best time to go... ok, then!!! My only complaint,
as I was invited by the upful posse to travel through the Southland and
on to Reggae on the River with them (a dream come true for sure!), I had
to teach early Friday, my son's last two days were yesterday and today
and I'd promised the Jamaica Independence Day Family Picnic Committee I'd
headline Sunday, August 3 at Westchester Park for their 10th Annual if
they printed my name on the flyers this year... guess what, they did!
Didn't want to let Organizer and Chair, Patrick Williams down, besides
the crowd is one of the most receptive I've ever performed for and I'm
sure they'd all be at the river if they could be. Just reordered, "I Can
See Clearly Now" on Molin Label and will be ready to sent promos shortly.
It has been very popular as is the first, "Renaissance In Formation". Now
if I could just get the fifth one out...life's a juggling act but I give
thanks to you all and especially Jah for giving me strength to try harder
no matter what disappointments come my way.
It was great to see Johnny Black who'll be working with Jeanette Smith at
Stone Tiger Entertainment next week in Florida, as well as Roger Steffens
(who lost 25 pounds looks terrific and says his secret is that he doesn't
eat anything he loves anymore!! LOL!) , saw Russell Gerlach who's busy
now since Wailing Souls came over to AO! Russell continues to keep the
Reggae community unified with his So. California Reggae Calendar he puts
out for Reggae Nucleus. Saw Reggae Nucleus' Editor, Eric Kohler. and MC
for the show Junior Franicis. The two will be out at VINE Fondue Lounge
1235 Vine Street next Sat night for Cafe Reggae Nucleus. I plan to make
it if not too tired from my gig at Malibu Inn Friday night with Dub
Kinetics. I spent lots of time in everyone's dressing rooms and truly
enjoyed spending time with Beres' backup singers. Nicky was excited they
were back out on tour and screamed when she saw me. They sounded
excellent! Marcia signed a gorgeous picture and my Carousel CD. I told
her she is my favorite female vocalist ever, but she musn't tell Jazz
singer Barbara Morrison I said that! (In Reggae, Marcia, in Jazz,
Barbara) Besides, Barbara's living it up as she performs for her Scottish
fans in Scotland this week! http://www.barbaramorrison.com Beres signed
my "Music is Life" CD on the page when he's looking down pensively. I
told him to sign there so I could tell others he's thinking of me!! He
laughed and wrote, "To Anna: Love You, Beres" OK, now this is sounding a
bit gossipy and braggadocios...today the posse is playing Victor's By the
Bay in San Diego at the Mission Bay Golf Course, the show will be early.
It's right off the 5 South at Mission Bay (before Sea World) Don't miss
it if you can!!! I'd be there if it wasn't my son's last night in town
for the next year. I'm, working on increasing my finances so I can see
him more often in the Caribbean here he lives with his dad and will
attend 8th grade. Hope to see the local Los Angeles posse at the Sanchez
Show at Hollywood Park Casino Friday, August 15 with Tinga Stewart. He'll
be bringing his own band...Yea Mon!!! Finally met Maidah Bey who takes
care of accommodations at the Holiday Inn Hollywood. She used to be at
Roosevelt Hotel. She mentioned that she always reads my work here at RAW
and was happy to finally meet me. That was cool! Speaking of writing, the
new Carib Press is out and features Jamaica's own, Butch Stewart and his
healing program, "Operation Relax" on the cover. There is a moving
letter of thanks from Corporal Bernard "Brent" Gooden's family and a
feature on BoomShaka's latest trip to Ethiopia plus many, many
wonderfully written articles that may hold us over for the next two
months. Publisher/Creative Director, Lyndon A. Johnson said the next
deadline is coming up in a week or so. Check http:www.caribpress.com for
details. Lucci's newly renovated music studio. "Platinum Traxx" will
reopen soon. He was painting this week when I spoke to him. He's excited
about how much better it will be when completed. Thanks for keeping me
informed, RAW idren! Education is tantamount if we are to spread the
Reggae Vibes every time! One thing that has severely hurt our local
Reggae Community is the loss of Barbara Barabino and Dred Scott's Show,
"Get Up Stand Up" at KKBT which was also simulcast on the net. After the
deluge of calls and emails, the station changed their numbers. Thanks to
CaribPress we can persist....please call the station at (323) 634-1800 or
email info@thebeatla.com to let your views be heard. The show ran each
Sunday night and truly helped promote the many great shows around town as
well as play great music of our favorite artists. Barbara has worked
diligently to bring us Bob Marley Birthday Celebration and the Reggae Old
School Jam both in Long Beach. The loss of this program has hurt many of
the recent shows' ticket sales due to the fact that the Beat listeners
were no longer informed and missed out. The Beat is an excellent force in
keeping peace and love in our community and features comedian/actor,
Steve Harvey in the morning. They DO listen and would love to hear from
all of us about the importance of keeping, "Get Up, Stand Up" on the air
or expanding their programming to include more Reggae. Los Angeles LOVES
Reggae, but is lacking the airwaves to promote it. Thanks to a few
dancehall artists gone mainstream, more are getting to know how wonderful
Reggae really is!
Now, don't get mad Reggae fans but there is one guitarist, Kevin Eubanks
that I'm crazy about and you may know him already from Jay Leno's tonight
show. I'm proud to announce the newest (yesterday) of his forty something
releases but fourth on his own label (In Soul) from his website,
"SLOW FREIGHT, this new CD features Kevin's uncle Ray Bryant on piano.
Kevin joins his uncle along with Marvin SMITTY Smith and bassist, Richard
Reid. Together they take you on ride through groove central. What fun!! "
Check http://www.kevineubanks.com
Kevin is a good friend and works hard despite his grueling schedule to
record the finest quality of music you've ever heard in addition to his
charity work helping our less fortunate youth. A former member of Art
Blakey's, Jazz Messenger's when invited by Branford Marsalis to lead the
Tonight Show Band. All music lovers can appreciate his virtuosity! I'd
love to hear Kevin record Reggae.
Jamaican Jazz/Reggae pianist, Monty Alexander has been at Hollywood's
Catalina's Bar & Grill the past three nights. Did anyone get to hear him?
Wish there were forty hours in a day!
Much love and more peace to all,
