Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! Thanks Tom #33 [2]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Zion's Gate Records (# Subject: Zion's Gate Records fully functional ONLINE record store Date: Sat, 02 Aug 2003 20:49:08 -0700 From: Zions Gate_Records announcement is simple: Zion's Gate Records proudly presents our new, fully functional ONLINE record store www.zionsgate.com one of the best selections of reggae/dub/dancehall on the internet. [4]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Anna Fisher (#1224) Subject: Jamaica Independence Day Picnic Los Angeles Date: Mon, 4 Aug 2003 04:24:12 -0700 From: molinus Greetings RAW, Yesterday was a beautiful day in Los Angeles at Westchester Park when literally thousands showed up for the 10th Annual Jamaica Independence Day Picnic. The weather was gorgeous and the crowd was welcoming. It was so beautiful to see so many large groups (mostly families) with blankets, coolers, chairs and umbrellas. There was lots of great Jamaican food on sale and the color scheme was green, yellow and black! Thanks to Richard of Dragonfly who provided the sound equipment, good vibes carried all afternoon. Due to the recent "Orange Alert" the city is not granting permits for public music, only personal boom boxes are permitted so the crew had to improvise. MC Junior Francis got the crowd involved with contests and gave historical insights to Jamaica and its cultural heritage throughout the beautiful afternoon, he had lots of children at the stage. When I arrived, it was quite hot so I parked my equipment under a huge tree. (the type that can shade thirty people easily!) Due to the lowered sound volume of the event, the crowd got upclose and intimate with the stage. First, was a guitarist (didn't get name) who played and sang solo. Second, came Buppy Bupatak who sang with a band that had a good feel and attracted many upfront. He gave me a CD which I'll listen to a.s.a.p. he had his son, Lennox with him. It wouldn't feel right if Ras Michael and the Sons of Negus didn't play again this year after their star performance last year, they were outstanding! Said he loved Boston and was overjoyed to have such a good crowd! The talented Lady Dread sang backups. It was a delightful treat! Special thanks to event organizers, sponsors and especially committee chair, Patrick Williams. The program listed many sponsors and from what I could gather, Editor in Chief of CaribPress, Marva Herman said, "We have some very big sponsors for next year!!". I vowed to get on the planning committee for next year and encouraged the crowd to go to the people at the main booth to sign up to get involved for next year to make it even better! People who did not understand about Orange Alert and the ordinance to cease ALL music in city parks might've blamed the sound crew or organizers (as I did) not knowing the real situation. It was an inspiring day and I was proud to be a part of it! The committee called me up to personally award me with a Certificate of Congratulations from the County of Los Angeles "ANNA FISHER, Dedicated Volunteer, Jamaica Independence Family Day Picnic 2003 - HONOREE With sincere congratulations and best wishes the Board of Supervisors of the County of Los Angeles does hereby join in your celebration. August 3, 2003" signed, Yvonne Brathwaite Burke, Chair of the Board Supervisor, Second District. Complete with Official Gold Seal of the County of Los Angeles! What was beautiful was seeing Joe Higgs' daughter Claudia who I hadn't seen since his memorial in 1999. She recently moved to LA and is giving free makeovers. She can be reached at (213) 387-0949. She has worked hard and started her own business which she says is paying bigger dividends than her professional training as a chemist was. What a lovely family Joe Higgs had! Also in attendance was Natimba David from Tortola, British Virgin Islands who I hadn't seen since our show on St. John, US Virgin Islands last year. He gave me a copy of his cousin Tito Alemu's CD, "Calling Everyone" (I-AM-I Music) which I proceeded to play six times!! Produced by Hectito "Alemu" Francis (St. Thomas, USVI) and co-produced by none other than Ras Abijah Hicks (whom many of you know from the band, Midnite). If you are interested in promotional copies, please email I-AM-I Music directly at: titoalemu@hotmail.com Musicians include, Alemu, lead vocals, Abijah, guitar, bass and keyboards, drum programming and back vocals, Anika, back vocals, Ronnie B. , keyboards. More great music out of the U.S. Virgin Islands!! By the way, Natimba David will soon release his debut CD which features his virtuosic steel drum stylings. I heard the mixed tracks and found it to be most impressive! Looking forward to hearing about Reggae on the River. With the line-up I'm sure it was unbelievable!! Said goodbye to my son who stayed at his dad's hotel room and is driving to the airport as I write this. It was a great month we spent together, as I read the copy of his report card that sits on my kitchen table, I know why he's there! (straight A's, double promotion!!) Jah bless his father for being there for his adolescent son. I am truly blessed. Akiba and Aswad were both my students for many years on St. John. Paul Samm's is the closest thing my son could have to a Godfather. Grasshopper and Jupiter, stay focused, I always believed you could make it big!!!! Innervisions, I Love You! Big Up, Lovecity Posse!!! Anna Fisher (#1224) from st thomas source, august 4, 2003 INNER VISIONS REACHING OUT, TO STATESIDE ACCLAIM by Sheila Clinton Outside Club Helsinki, from left: Akiba, Spikie, Ras Paul, Grasshopper, Jupiter and Aswad give the band's 'I-V' sign. July 18, 2003 - On June 23, a large white van rolled into a small village in the Berkshire Mountains of western Massachusetts. The reggae group Inner Visions, all the way from Love City, St. John, had come to town. Reggae fans of Great Barrington, Mass., and nearby communities and those curious to know more about the genre would soon experience the "positive-message music" that Inner Visions is known for in the Virgin Islands -- and, increasingly, on the U.S. mainland. For Terry Meigs, a special education professional from Greenfield, Mass., the band's appearance at Great Barrington's Club Helsinki was her first exposure to the group. "It was an evening full of fun, dancing and high vibrations," she said afterward. "I enjoyed every minute of it." Meigs, whose only personal connection with the Virgin Islands is a trip she once made to St. Thomas for a job interview, added: "The lyrics really matched the music in the spirit of roots reggae." The six-member band is in the midst of an extensive stateside tour promoting the release of its new CD, "Street Corner Musicians." The 13 tracks include "My Father's Prayer," "Just a Matter of Time," "Black Sheep," "Ain't It the Truth," "No More Tears to Cry" and "Kindred Journey." Most of the songs were written by band leader Phillip "Grasshopper" Pickering or percussionist "Ras Paul" Samms. Grasshopper, the heartbeat of the group, does lead vocals and plays lead and rhythm guitar. Samms also does lead vocals along with percussion. Alvin "Jupiter" Pickering, Grasshopper's brother, handles background vocals and plays bass, and Leroy "Spikie" Guiste is on keyboards. The Pickerings grew up on St. John; Guiste is from Dominica and Samms is from Jamaica. The most recent additions to the band are Grasshopper's two sons Akiba, age 21, and Aswad, 18. In just nine months, these young men have mastered their instruments -- keyboards and drums, respectively. Inner Visions is a group recognized for its great discipline as well as its talent. After many years of performing throughout the Virgin Islands for loyal fans, the band is meeting with impressive success on the mainland. From the moment the musicians take the stage at venues thousands of miles away from Caribbean, audiences are listening and dancing as the message of "Love One Another" -- the title of their first CD -- finds a welcome audience. Since May, they have been criss-crossing the continent to play reggae festivals and other bookings, including the Lake Eden Arts Festival in Black Mountain, North Carolina, and the Island Fest in Kalamazoo, Michigan, both invitations to return after appearances last year. This week, they're in the Rocky Mountains, performing in Crested Butte and Boulder, Colorado. Paul Toth, entertainment director of the Kalamazoo event, had this to say about Inner Vision's first Island Fest appearance, in 2002: "The band took the stage precisely when scheduled and delivered one of the finest sets I have ever witnessed. I have always been a fan of vocal harmonies, and Inner Visions delivered three- and four- part harmonies that sounded like Jah's angels." A highlight of the current tour will be the group's appearance Sunday on the mainstage at the California Worldfest in Grass Valley, Calif. -- again an invitation back after a well-received performance last year. Then they'll head back to the Rockies, for gigs at the end of this month in Aspen, Steamboat Springs and Durango, Colorado -- winter ski meccas that attract nature lovers in the summer months. The band will continue touring into the fall, returning to New England and points south on the East Coast. Fans can keep up with their itinerary by checking out the Inner Visions Reggae Web site.
