Surfacing several years ago as a labor of love, the passion that Errol Lam of Bowling Green, Ohio has for THE ARK BAND spilled over into a universal love for "the little guy," the Indies of Reggae. Lam, known on the Internet as "Roots-ee" and still touting every move by "his" band, began by letting others on the electronic highway know of more "local" bands. His then began encouraging, even challenging, online Reggae deejays to devote more air time to independent singers and players. The movement grew and spread as fast as the Cyberspace itself and today sees a deejay in Guam ("Jah Son") that often programs nothing but Indy music; an organization, Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide (RAW), that provides an invaluable and supportive networking link; a respected international publication, The Beat, devoting more space through reviews, bios and news to support the movement and yet another publication (your very Dub Missive), supporting this column with a focus on Indies. This is Reggae crossing all borders, or, as stated at the recent RAW conference, Reggae IS moving mountains. Just can't stop Jah's music. Independent artists, record labels and publications send new projects directly to me for review consideration: c/o of RAW 1057 Denver St. Salt Lake City, UT 84111-4732, Till next time: Forward the Reggae Vibe...Everytime! one, peace, roots-ee http://thearkband.com [3]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Anna Fisher (#1224) Date: Mon, 1 Dec 2003 22:56:25 -0800 From: molinus Subject: Papa Pilgrims' Slant on American Reggae Greetings Rootsee, Thank you for sharing this article by PP. Very special indeed! I believe I read it before at the Yahoo USA Based Reggae Bands Group site a few years back. Please share the source where this was originally published. Would love to know. Brought a tear to my eye as PP was one of my greatest fans in Reggae Music and played my music often on his radio show. The Ark Band has so many excellent songs on both of their CD's, "Na Give Up" and "Love Is What We Need" to promote world peace. Thanks for staying out there for them!! Sizzla Pure Love Germaican 18. (new) Regan Bran Don Corleon 19. (new) 14 K Move Body Like Snake Stonelove 20. (new) Daville So Smooth Baby G FROM THE OLD TO THE NEW !!! The December NM REGGAE DANCEHALL CHARTS has moved from the old to the new, with a whopping 12 new entries this time around. High Society's COOLIE DANCE has completely taken over NM. Elephant Man still holds the top spot with "Genie Dance", but he is being severely challenged by Bounty Killer's "Yuh Gawn" on the same riddim. Also strong on the COOLIE DANCE are Ward 21's "Nuh Like We", sending a message to the numerous haters out there: "If yuh nuh like we, go muck yo summa (instead of suck yo mumma)", as well as Red Rat's square-dance inspired (!!!) "Round & Round". Cecile's controversial call for the guys to go ahead and give her some oral sex (a definite taboo & no no in Jamaican dancehall circles/society as a whole) has to take the cake though. She says: " So when selectah talk bout who nah do it hand ina di air, keep your hand dem by your side cause di gal dem no care-so just do it to me baby, no matter what nobody say!" These lyrics are BOUND to cause a storm, so expect numerous counteractions in the near future. Also raging in NM is Don Corleon's GOOD TO GO, featuring a wicked, driving guitar-hook. It is represented by the energy god, Baby Cham, Predator and Regan, with another hot Wayne Wonder bubbling under. Further dancehall (re-)entries include Blaxxx Records' EGYPTIAN beat in the form of Mr. Dutty Cup's "Get With It Girl" and Ele's title track "Egyptian Dance". The former Sean Paul is so incredibly catchy, that I am amazed it has not been picked up by the main-stream yet, especially with the heavy focus on the man at this time. Speaking of Sean Paul, rumors have it that Slim Shady Productions (yup Dr.Dre & Eminem) bought out his Atlantic contract and have him under their wing now, so things a gwaan fi di youth. Go deh Sean !!! Elephant's dancehall anthem "Signal Di Plane" is still fairing well, as are the BAGHDAD/SNAKE and the 20 CENT riddims, which made this chart through the works of 14 K (covering R.Kelly and once again, clearly outdoing him) and the super-smooth Daville, whom I'm beginning to like more & more, as he has to be one of the most under-rated Jamaican dancehall singers at this time. No new killer roots tunes have come our way lately, leaving only Sizzla to represent that vibes, yet there is hope as there are a number of quality riddims about to hit the streets, including selections from Penthouse, Calibud, and 2 Miles labels. The last of these features a RED-HOT track from a new singer called Nicky King (Bringing the guns to town) which is striving for the #1 spot in Jamaica at this time. Also bubbling under are a number of MURDEROUS tracks from Mr."Heads High"Vegas that we've been lucky enough to receive. He has one on COOLIE DANCE (not on Greensleeves), one on the Punjabi/Nightrider beat, and the absolute smasher entitled "Tamale". More on all those next time around, as they are bound to MASH UP the NM dancehalls.
