It had been raining all day, but this condition is not new Seattle. Rain never stops any event in Seattle. Now the snow is another story, because the people just is not accustom to driving in snow. The audience was small but the energy was high. The Lions of Israel took the stage with Ras Melenik chanting Satta A Massagana. After the chant the lead singer for Lions of Israel, Ras Joseph took to the stage, he is a red headed Rasta brethren from Arkansas. I wouldnt be surprise if his roots were Irish. His vibes was definitely authentic Rasta, as he worked his set very potentially conscious. The back up harmony singer sister Rochelle who backed Luciano on his last tour with Mikey General was representing in the house with her vocal partner, Sister Erica Newell formerly backup vocalist for Ziggy Marley and the Melodymakers. These two Empresses harmonized and blended well with Mikeys vocal style. It is good to see Mikey General on his ownout of the shadow of his mentor, Luciano. His mannerisms are the same as Luciano though and it keeps his performance on a spiritual and righteous path. During his set he will stop and read a Psalms for the massive, before he goes into another song. The small Seattle crowd is not familiar with his music or being preached to in the dancehall. But they are enthralled with this Rastafaris levity, while sister Rochelleis keeping it balance. Mikey General is a soft-spoken, humble Rasta man whose presence put you into a tranquil chill instantly as you step into his aura. He acknowledged that the crowd was sparse but empathized that many are called but the chosen are few. He kept the same potency in his performance throughout his set. He is extremely focus and enunciated every word so his audience can understand his lyrics. At half way through his set the snow began to fall. This created a sense of warmth, a captive audience nobody coming in, nobody going out. It is like, nobody move, nobody gets hurt. The crowd was enjoying his performance tremendously even though it was obvious they were not familiar with his songs. A few songs like, Selassie I Sons and Daughters had a hook on its beat, but thcrowd wasnt picking up. He sang a familiar cover song from hismentor, Luciano, the song entitled, Sweep over my Soul, and then hshifted into another familiar song of his, Unseen Blessings. Tonight hdidnt his signature song, Mis Taylor Boy; I hope he hasnt outgrothis song. The crowd was vibing they obviously could feel the commitment and conviction from the artist. They were bawling for more music and Mikey obliged like the previous Mikey before him last week (Mikey Dread was performing compliments of Jahmani Production) by belting out Exalt Jah followed by As a man Thinketh off his new CD and tour of thsame name, Red, Gold and Green. The music was tight because he was traveling with the Bassie from Jahmessenjah Band the same band that backed him and Luciano during their recent tour to the US. The drummer is Lenky from the Jahpostles Band, so you know the drum and bass was authentic, except Mikey is a straight ahead singer and he doesnt do too much pullup and rewind tracks like other newer artists. He relies on his vocal abilities rather than gimmicks and hip tricks. Mikey General is a roots artist, in the stable with a stellar of artists. So he contemplates his performance. He leaves no stone unturn when he does his works. He opened his show with a niyabinghi drumbeat which he interprets as the one two heart beat saying, Do Good, Do Good.He gladly obliged the massive with a niyabinghi and ended the night on a good note and a harmonious balance. Mikey General in Rasta Cruz by Jah Breeze RAW #85 It is amazing how different a show can be from one city to another. I am referring to the Mikey General show in Santa Cruz on Nov 25th at Moes. I caught the first leg of the same show in Seattle at the Ballard Firehouse, there I thought the show was as potent as it gets. But the Lions of Israel took it up to another level for the Santa Cruz massive. The crowd was a little slow responding to brother Joseph as he stepped out of the small door way singing his song, Wise Up, he stayed relentlessly burning the fire on Babylon with hotter fire lyrics in Wicked in Babylon. He proceeded to honor Bob Marley anHaile Selassie with his rendition of the famous song, War. Actuallythis was an appropriate song for brother Joseph because he is a white dreadlock youth from Arkansas promoting reggae music and initially people are skeptical. So when he delivered the line, Until the color ofa mans skin, is of no more significance than the color of hiseyes; it had a special affinity to his struggle penetrating Rastafari which is basically an Afro centric way of life. But we can feel the conviction and the empathy in his words. So in the end Ras Joseph proved he is no Eminem, but proved instead that he was Zion bound to the end. He followed up with such tunes like, Children of Zion and latesealed his opening set with a conscious dancehall tune called, Wages of sinis death. Ras Joseph signature style is that he can erupt into a furious dancehall lyric and then transition into a roots groove. By the time Mikey General grace the stage the massive was primed for the Gideon War. Mikey came to work, you can tell he had done his scouting report on the area and knew how to get his entourage prepared for this venue. He shared with the audience that Bob Marley referred to Santa Cruz as Rasta Cruz when he frequented it in the early 70s because of the Rasta livity inthe atmosphere. The Empresses Rochelle and Erica came correct and prepared to compliment the brilliant vocal rapture of the General. They were holding the power of the trinity symbol with their hands setting the Rasta mood and paving the wave for the General to pounce on the stage. He opened with a song that had words to the effect of, May the power of the most highJah be with you always and may he send a Comforter to dry your weeping eyes. The tune sounded familiar; as a matter of fact I think it is a Luciano song. However, the next cover song I was sure about, it was a Bob Marley song, One Drop which faded straight into the rhythm from thprevious song. Mikey was doing this a lot throughout the night. He would drop lyrics from other familiar songs from his mentors Bob and Luciano into to his originals. This artist is an exemplary Rasta; he embodies all the good qualities of an Ambassador. He commanded the stage very confident about his mission to spread the ideology of Rastafari message throughout the four corners of the world. As soon as the famed MC and roots doctor, Rocky Bailey introduced him to the end of the show, Mikey had the crowd, jumping, clapping and raising their hands in unison to show their support of Jah Rastafari teachings. He was waving his rod of correction rhythmically like a conductor signaling his orchestra. Mikey Generals vocal range is powerful as he demonstrated in hissong, Run away, fly away. He described this song as a working mananthem, referring to the preoccupation with work and not having time to pray. He reminded us that Jah is the source of life. So you must take time out to glorify him name. The duo backup harmony was soulfully spiritual in this particular song, it featured both Rochelle and Erica doing some lead verses. These women are versatile, the two of them together sounds like the I-Three. Erica sounds like Marcia Griffith and Rochelle sounds like Judy Mowatt. They repeated the same vocal style in a new song that they created on the road with brother Joseph and lead by Mikey General called, Universal Love. In this song, Ras Joseph does the dancehalrap verses, while Erica is wailing like she is in a Southern Baptist choir while Rochelle sings over the top van gloriously. This song also demonstrated the strengths and talents of the musicians of Lions of Israel: Jah Lloyd on Bass, Ras Lenky on drum set, Ras Melenik on the Repeater Niyabinghi drum, brother Dwight on keyboards and brother David on guitar. Universal Love proved to be surely a labor of lovfor this crew, judging from their response to the audience reaction. Mikey General seemed very confident in his performance tonight at Moes. He has taken his place in the big leagues of the Rasta spiritual fraternity, yet he remains humble and gave credit and praises to his predecessors, Luciano and Bob Marley throughout his set. He honored Luciano with the singing of his song, Sweep over my soul.Mikey General and Luciano are the only artists these days that display the Bible and truly use the dancehall as a pulpit to uplift the masses politically, morally and spiritually rather than saturating their minds with sexual debauchery. The audience is never intimidated and feels preached to, it seemed like most of the authentic Rastas are present for the message and not for the slackness. Keeping conscious is the roots of the genre which expresses the message of the struggle of people and their believe that good will over come evil in the end. In the show in Seattle, Mikey read a Psalms from the Bible, except here in California he is doing the same through the medium of his songs, like Sinners he opened with a verse saying, Blessed is the man thwalketh not in the counsel of the ungodlySinners, before he belted out the song using some powerful vocal ranges. As if that wasnt enough, he broke into Lucianos song, Look what thedoing to my soul. The backup vocalists were all over that with a response like, Oh God, Oh Go dOh God. The massive was singing back, they couldnt get enough of the blessings, still Mikey real off more hits like, Unseen Blessings followed by another, As a manthinketh. Mikey General reminded us that we are all instruments of Jah, and in his song Exalt Jah, he counted to three and had us all shout out thname of Jah in unison. It was like a mantra or a chant he said he frequently does before coming on stage or in his meditation. Then he told us Jah is happy to hear us exalting his name. Then he begins his next song, Joy which he asked us to jump high for Jah. Every one was participating and following his instruction voluntarily. We were no longer spectators we were an interactive audience, now he chooses to loose us with the song, Mind over matter. Sizzla has a hot track called the same titlbut Mikey song is a stark contrast to Sizzlas, his is embedded with a dynamic harmony line from the backup vocalists, it went something like, No, we wouldnt let them do that while the Niyabinghi drum barout a steady one two heartbeat sound. Mikey interpreted the one two heartbeat sound as saying, Do Good, Do Good. Mikey General next stop on the tour is at Oasis in Oakland on thanksgiving eve and Sunday Nov 30th in Portland. The Portland show is slated to be his hottest vocal mixes on the road because he would be featuring his stable mate from the Stone Tiger label, Lehbanchulah. Go deh!
