[3]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Zipp (#784) Subject: R.A.W. as seen on R.M.R. newsgroup Date: Sat, 5 Jul 2003 23:40:31 -0400 From: zipp thompson well, jah son is not home yet and i don't think there were many forumites at the conference, so that leaves me!!! roots-ee said the 3rd response was ras adam who is from upstate new york and can be heard on thurs. from 6-8 pm at http://wxxe.org. , he also does the new york reggae guide. ras adam is correct. there was extensive discussion on further organization of raw through regionalization. there will be discussion within the board and a request to the massive for input. in the meantime the new york and new england posse (who were at the conference)have agreed to gather as the northeast region. i will be notifying the remaining members in this region and we intend to meet at ras jahn's #510 charlemont reggae fest in mass on sept. 6.. the agenda has not yet been designed. discussions and presentations were held in a very casual atmosphere at the all asian restaurant which is a block from the hotel at mit. being an individual who is reluctant to speak in a public forum, i found this setting very comfortable and i was able to participate without getting phobic!!! kevin a. spoke and presented a film on rasta spiritualism and we saw a film from the roskinds. there was lots and lots of reasoning. jah son & kyle acted as mc. mission statement and general overview of raw runnings was given. charitable work in jamaica and ehtiopia was discussed. a discussion on some facets of the regaae business. reasoning about raw tours and a need for a raw band for backup of solo artsts. bylaws completion. corporate sponsorship for raw. several members gave written commitments to assist raw in different ways. as far as the numbers, i don't have anything in writing but i was told there were about 40 paid registrants which i understand is significantly higher than the san jose conference. also there were people there that became members by registering, which is interesting. i don't believe we have acquired new members from raw conferences in the past. i also know of 1 nonmember who came for 2 days to check raw out and intends to join (was also at three of the 4 nights of music). dub station, the band kyle russell is in ,played backup for several raw artists. they were incredible. midnite put on a great show . the house was not packed , word was that third world was playing at a nearby venue. ras michael and the sons & dawta(zema) of negus were fantastic and they played to a packed house. i apologize for not remembering the names of the artists from bermuda , but i certainly remember their song "worldwide reggae ambassador". they had the whole house jammin both times they played that song! i move we make that our official anthem! marque and zema had the house rocking. zema started her sets off with "free at last"...you go girl! it was great seeing friends again and meeting new friends. i'm really looking forward to working on a regional level with the impressive group of members here in the northeast. big up to kyle. he did it all. an amazing and talented man and a real nice guy. when jah son gets home, he will give a better report, but that's a quick rundown off the top of my head!. one love, zipp #784 [4]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From Ras Adam (#1530) Subject: "what can RAW do FOR you? nothing," From: webmaster@reggaeambassadors.org Date: Sunday, 6 July 2003, at 9:03 a.m. someone at the conference was saying What can R.A.W. do FOR you? Nothing! what can YOU use RAW to do for yourself? Skys the limit.... In other words people joined RAW thinking it would automatically make them superstars, sell thier label's records like hot bread, have millions suddenly tune in to their radio show + attend their concerts/dances; many became disillusioned when this magic didn't happen to them and they quit. The point is that YOU have to do the legwork and the work work and RAW provides the tools to accomplish that task. There is no automatic magic service that does all these things for you, it is on you to utilize the resources they offer and make them work for you. If you have a radio show RAW can give you names of record labels and contact people, it can give you lists of fellow djs, it can give you sample playlist sheets, BUT it is up to YOU to send out those playlists, make those contacts, sell yourself and your show. If you have a band; RAW can give you contacts for Studios, Promoters, Radio, Clubs etc.. but again RAW is not going to give you a tour and instant success.. you have to do the work using RAW's tools. Before i got back on the air I never joined RAW because i could access any reggae info I needed on my own. After joining RAW i made some great links. i know i will never forget Vermont Reggae fest getting station Id's from Mikey Dread, beenie etc.. and i attribute that to Nan lewis, Sue Delion and the RAW connection. same things at the TEVA tour with thrird world maxi etc.. RAW (like soilent green) is people.. we help each other promote what we love Reggae Music. Dues $ goes right back into RAW. If there is left over $ it goes to memberships for those who can't afford it many in S Africa etc... i used to have a lil attitude about RAW, I prejudged it before i knew it. I'm here to say its good people trying to do good works. ras adam simeon#1530 Link: NY Reggae Guide URL: [5]--------------------------------------------------------------------- >From: "Jahworks.org Info" Subject: JahWorksUpdate::Ghetto Youths--Long Beach--Reggae Awards--More! Check here to get to previous segments. On Committed, Jamaica’s Wayne Stoddart calls on the noted Dean Fraser to co-deliver his sound on this Gospel reggae release. The result, a combo of Stoddart’s fine vocals and musical arrangements with Fraser’s expert guidance in the roots island vibe, is spectacular. Stoddart has deep musical roots in his community, having been on the scene for several years, and this stands him in good stead as he not only embraces a variety of related musical approaches, but calls on musical colleagues to help him to do so. Songs such as the rootsy “Bountiful Love” and more brazen “Final Day” emplify the solid and refined studio sound that Stoddart and Fraser serve up. Alexander Martin-Blanken adds keyboard organ to the mix in this heady concoction of richly appropriate live instrumentation as Stoddart shines with strong lead vocals. On the title track, Stoddart gives the nod to Forgiven for subtle supporting vocals as he rises to the fore with memorable lead vocals backed by a rock-steady rhythm and Fraser’s own saxophone. Fraser also drops in on “He’s Everything To Me”, Stoddart’s island take on the popular Ralph Carmichael hymn. Veering to rhythm ‘n praise, “Spending Time With God” brings in guest Chevelle Franklyn on vocals, as Stoddart takes a break with mere background talking on this self-produced and self-written number. Franklyn also appears with Stoddart with rousing reggae-beats and guitar infestation (courtesy Dalton Brownie) on “Spirit of the Lord”. Other detours from the predominant roots sound that is the foundation of this project include several reflective numbers that combine musical elements pulled from traditional Gospel and worship and praise genres. “Paradise” and “Homesick” fall into this camp. Committed is a strong project from within the ranks of one of Jamaica’s rising vocalists. Overall it looks like Apple is living up to the hype that it's bending over backwards to give the indy labels a fair shake. I do note however it states that all submissions to iTunes must come from a label, and can not come directly from the artists themselves. So we'll see how broad they are going to be willing to define "independent label" coming soon. rgds Joel #1273 DJ/Label Coordinator Derek of Cd Baby reports on itunes meeting re: indy music. Apple iTunes + independent music Apple iTunes + independent music - About positioning and getting attention on iTunes * Apple has hired an editorial staff with backgrounds in music to decide what gets featured. * Editorial team makes decisions every day as to what goes where. * Big labels don't get preferential treatment. * "We pick music we like, and we think everyone else is going to like." * "We've had a lot of people offer money", but Apple refuses money, and has no plan to ever accept money for placement. * Even what looks like a banner ad at the top of the screen is put there by Apple. * When an audience member doubted they'd stay with this policy, they pointed to their 20 years of selling Apple computers, and never selling icons on the desktop or any of the other things that companies have offered to pay them a lot of money to do. * (Plus Steve Jobs reminded us they have $41 billion in the bank and are not in debt. They're not desparate for cash.) * They did admit that when a popular artist gives iTunes exclusive tracks, that may prompt Apple to make a banner an on iTunes promoting it. * New releases sell really well. * Exclusive tracks (songs that aren't available on CD anywhere) sell amazingly well. They're the best sellers in whole store. * Occasionally they make a special featured artist page, with video, photos, a link back to the artist's site, and more. It seems this is just for very high-profile artists, though. * Top-seller charts on Apple only reflect the last 24 hours. (IDEA FOR INDIES: get all your friends to buy at once!) * Here's the iTunes info about browsing and searching. What you CAN'T do * You can not sell an album as album-only format without allowing the purchase of single-songs. * Can't search by record label, although you can see the record label on the album info page. * There will be no links from iTunes to your website, or to buy the physical CD. * Right now there are no sub-genres, only big genres. (rock/jazz/etc.) About the deal to independents * They said "We're going to give you the same basic deal we gave the big 5 major labels". * Same deal. Same agreements. Same team of people. Same treatment, all-around. * "We have to be more efficient, though. We're not going to deal with 200 lawyers." * "Everyone is going to get the exact same deal. It's not negotiable. It's take it or leave it." * This is a reseller agreement: Apple buys at a wholesale price. Apple resells them to users. "No complicated or messy licenses." * Apple only deals with the partner/label. It's up to the label to pay the artists, writers, publishing, etc. * Rights are a 3 year term. For iTunes only, of course. This is totally non-exclusive. * THEY PAY EVERY MONTH! * IMPORTANT: the details will be mailed to me soon. They haven't named specific amounts yet. Instead, they had us sign a contract request form, and they'll mail the contract to us. That's when I'll know more. EVERY artist in the store gets... * listed in new releases * found in searches (any search returns up to 250 songs for that artist) * in the "browse all artists" list (the text-based view) * an artist page (page showing all CDs by this artist, top downloaded songs, top downloaded albums, also bought...) * an album page: artwork, song list, top downloads, references to other artists * listed in cross-references to other albums ("people who bought this also bought...") Marketing and Promotion * 10 million customers have opted-in to receive a "New Music" email from Apple every Tuesday. Customers of iPod, iTunes, .mac, Apple eNews. * You can have a link directly on your site to point to your music on iTunes. (Of course the link will only work for people who have the iTunes software.) * Google has exclusive discounts for sponsored links into iTunes. Plus some personalized support. * Macs in 57 Apple retail stores are pre-loaded with playlists called, "Discover Indie Music". A chance at in-store play. How to get the music to Apple * It's up to the partner/label to submit all the metadata (artist name, release date, song tiles, etc.), do the audio encoding, and upload the materials. * Every album needs to have a UPC Barcode! * You have to use their special Music Store Encoder tool for Mac OS X which will be released in 90 days or so. * Independent artists themselves, not with a label, can't use this. You have to go through an iTunes partner. * When asked if artists with their own label would be eligible, the iTunes guys had an odd answer, saying that this was invitation-only and they want to deal with those of us in the room. * (CD Baby will be an iTunes partner, and will be glad to do the submission and be your pipeline into iTunes, if we can.) Apple Does: * Marketing & merchandising * Advertising, PR, Retail, Direct * 30-second Previews * Infrastructure of download & delivery * Credit card transaction Current Stats: * There are 6-7 million copies of iTunes in use. * 3.5 million songs sold so far. Selling about 500,000 songs a week now. * More than 75% of songs have sold at least once. There is a wide breadth in purchasing. This is not only fueled by hits. * 45% of all songs have been bought as an album. In other words: don't worry about the death of the album format. 45% of people prefer to buy as an album anyway, even though they always have the option to only buy per-song. * 90% of sales are 1-click downloads. (1-click is where customer has credit card stored on file, so that as soon as they click a song title, it starts downloading and their credit card is automatically charged.) * 10 previews (free 30 second listen) for every purchase. Meaning: 10 listens per buy. Price of music on iTunes * Songs must be 99 cents each. * Full albums are recommended to be $9.99 or lower. * Album price must be less than or equal to the sum of their tracks. So if you have a 5-song album, it can't be more than $4.95 to buy the full-length album. * Apple strongly recommends going even lower than $9.99. They'd like to see that price drop to make the full-album purchase even more desirable. * Only exception: if a song is over 7 minutes long, they won't offer it as a separate download. It will be available as part of the album only. * There is no cost to put your music on iTunes. * There will be no up-front advance from Apple. * Details on the wholesale price to the label will be mailed to us, later. Sales report to SoundScan * Apple is reporting all iTunes sales to SoundScan! * SoundScan measures per-song not per-album. * So if someone buys your whole album, each track on the album is reported as a song sale. * SoundScan requested to do it that way. It was their idea, not Apple's. That's all we know for now! This message was sent to all music labels listed in the Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide (R.A.W.) email database.
