We are guessing that many of you have already heard about the MIDNITE/DUBWIZE show that took place in Santa Cruz, California, but for such a positive event, more news is better. The Vets Hall in Santa Cruz sold out on a Monday night! Over 500 people! Old timers are saying that it was the biggest reggae show ever at the Vets Hall, and that includes all shows ever, including weekend nights. And DUBWIZE, the opening band played to a 3/4 full house at 9:00 PM, and that is absolutely unprecedented for an opening band to receive that kind of support at such an early time in the evening. Huge "BIG-UP" to DUBWIZE and MIDNITE fans, to Reggae fans - THANK YOU!!! It seems that 50% or more of the crowd were DUBWIZE fans. DUBWIZE had asked their fans to come and support MIDNITE and to hear them live and the DUBWIZE fans responded. It is so awesome to see one reggae group supporting another and bringing their fans to spread the love. And now almost all DUBWIZE fans are MIDNITE fans and visa-versa. DUBWIZE played an awesome set of their original Roots Reggae music to an incredibly enthusiastic crowd. They then tried to get off the stage, but the crowd screamed for more and the promoter signaled "Go for it" so they delivered a truly unplanned encore that was so inspiring. Then Midnite came on and delivered their unique style of Roots Reggae Music and the party continued and grew. There were no spectators this evening - all were participating dancing and singing along and smiling and connecting with others and being children again - it was beautiful. Just received a call from a friend: He said that Monday night was the best event he had ever been to in his life. Asked him how his girlfriend enjoyed it and he said "I think she liked it more than I did". (guess they had a good time!) So MIDNITE played as billed, DUBWIZE played as billed, the concert sold out on a Monday night and we participated in an inspiring and historic event. And it didn't happen to us, it happened because of us. And that makes it so much sweeter. DUBWIZE opened up for MIDNITE, Monday night, June 16, Summer, 2003 Vets Hall - Santa Cruz. Now it is part of history. If you were there, you got the pleasure and the stories for life. But even if you weren't with us Monday night, you have been with us other times, you have worked at it other times and other places and that helped to make last night happen. So it is for you too. DUBWIZE is a family, not one to pick on, but one to share with and to support each other and to remember to hold within ourselves, the positive words and feelings and stories and emotions delivered within the DUBWIZE music and all Reggae music and to share the love with others. DUBWIZE & MIDNITE played Santa Cruz...and now we can feel it and talk about it for a lifetime. I've seen em 5 times now, but last night's show was something special. The band probably wouldn't agree, as they must've been dead tired from their previous legendary 3 hour shows (I think like 7 in the last 9 days or so) and their trip from California to get to St. Louis. But I'll tell ya, they still put on 2 hours and 45 minutes of intense, crucial roots and again had to be basically kicked off the stage to enforce the curfew, at the start of "Mama Africa." That was a real drag. Curfews suck, btw. Total bullshit... They played at Club Viva again and once again blew everyone away. There was a hard-core thunderstorm that night, and it definitely kept a lot of people away, but the ones that showed were treated to another classic evening. They played some songs for the first time in town ("Esta Es The Truth" and "Mountains" especially blew me away) and just jammed classic after classic tune. They definitely played in a more mellow style than I've ever seen before, changing songs up like crazy. It took me a few moments on many of the tunes to figure out which ones they were, they were that different. "Powaz Ov Weed" was incredible. A few new tracks were great. Everything was tight, as usual. They still continue to be, in my mind, the hottest band on the planet. They are special and if you've never seen em, they could seriously change your life. They're that good... Remember them playing "Love Jah" like as the 4th song or so (always thought that was basically only a song they opened with). It was incredible. Like I said, it was a long day today, but i remember a killer, different version of "Kaaba Stone," as well as "Due reward," Old Robe/As Da Ga, "People Iz i," Lion Wears The Crown, Rastaman Stand, Bushman, Meditation, Banking In The Pig, Israel, New Life, Late Night Ghetto and I'm sure tons of others. Bottom line is they blew the place away. If you have a chance to see em, jump at it.
