It's Mikey General again - here on another tour but this time with Brother Joseph and the Lions of Israel. It's a pleasure to be relating to you again. There is so much that I have to tell you. In late October, after coming back from the US tour, we did two shows in Canada which we were unable to do while we were on the US tour so we were glad for the opportunity. The shows were very good and as usual, the Canadian people were very warm although the weather was very cold. The first show in Toronto was well-attended and there Luciano and myself performed very well. Give thanks to Vibes Promotion for putting on a beautiful show. The show in Montreal was well-attended and it's obvious that the people feel a need for good reggae music. Give thanks also for the promoter Eric of Ma's Place and his team as they were the ones who carried us to Canada. When we returned to Jamaica, we left just two days later for the BVI which is the British Virgin Islands where the Rastafari community was celebrating the removal of the Rasta law which prohibited Rastas from entering the British Virgin Islands for 23 years. It was repealed just recently and the bredren decided to celebrate by inviting myself and Luciano over to celebrate with them. It also coincided with the Caribbean Rastafari Organization's (CRO) ninth annual conference being kept in Tortola. We were able to attend the last day of the conference as we arrived the Thursday and Friday was the last day where we were guest speakers. Once thing that astonished me was the diversity of Rastafari within the Caribbean. There were Rasta bredren from Puerto Rico, Martinique, St. Martin, Antigua, Barbados, Jamaica, the USA and the UK. It was a beautiful occasion as it was Women's Night and the empresses had a lot on their minds that they wanted to share. They discussed the pressures that they have born in the faith of Rastafari and how it has not been easy for them as women to continue in this faith although the good examples of others that had gone before have strengthened them. Luciano was a guest speaker as was I and we spoke about the divinity of women which leads me to throw out a question to all of you and I am very eager to hear your responses. Please forward them to Empress Jeanette as perhaps we could include the reasoning in this journal. "Is the woman part of the Godhead?" The show was suppose to be kept on a Saturday night in an outside venue but as it is the Caribbean and November is a rainy time of the year, rain washed out the first night so we had to postpone it until Monday. On Monday we kept the show in an enclosed place although there was not as big a turnout as we had expected because there was a lot of rain and a lot of people had to work. The spirit was very strong and the people, although they weren't many, really enjoyed themselves. There is something about a Caribbean crowd that really gravitates to the reggae music. Maybe it's because they have faced the same pains and trials as their brothers and sisters in Jamaica and all over the world. We left Tortola after saying our good-byes to the good bredren that were there and also to Empress Kufunya. When we traveled from Tortola back to Jamaica, it was already time for us to catch the plane straight to Arkansas. Brother Jah Lloyd, the bassie from JahMessenjah Band, was accompanying me as well as was Empress Rochelle from the Far East Singers who also sings with Luciano. We left for Montego Bay the same day we arrived. In Arkansas, we were met by Brother Joseph of the Lions of Israel. The Lions of Israel is a part of Majestic Productions who has been doing some great work in the mid-west. Joseph, a Rastafari bredren that you may remember me mentioning in my last journal, has some good music and he was able to arrange some shows for us to do on the west coast. We had rehearsal at Brother Joseph's house just to tighten up everything. The drummer is Brother Lenky, formerly of Jahpostles Band and the other harmony singer is Erica Newell, formerly of the Melodymakers. On guitar is Brother David, another part of Majestic Productions, and the keyboardist is Dwight from Orlando, a very good keyboard player. The rehearsal was very good and the mix of musicians from all around has developed into a nice blend just as if you were cooking a pot - all of the seasonings have come together to make a beautiful dinner. [Editor's note - Mikey loves to cook as do both Admiral Tibet & Edi Fitzroy and they once told me that it would be a clash in the kitchen when they were all in Miami to see who cooked the best.] We did the first show in Fayetteville and it was raining so we didn't get the crowd that we were expecting but it was still a good turnout and the people really enjoyed themselves. Joseph of the Lions of Israel is a very energetic bredren who bounces on the stage from the start to the finish so it was a very lively set. I followed afterwards and it's the first time I've been doing so much songs in a set. I started with some familiar songs like "Unseen Blessings" and "Mis' Taylor Boy" and than moved through some songs from the "Spiritual Revolution" cd including "Jah Inna Me Head" and "Selassie I Sons and Daughters" [Editor's note, we've been adding many of these songs to the site at http://www.stonetiger.net as links and streaming radio for you to enjoy]. I did some songs from the "Exalt Jah" lp - "As a Man Thinketh," "Mind Over Matter," and "Exalt Jah." I than featured some from the "Red, Green & Gold" album. Overall, I had sung fifteen songs when the night was over but because of the joy that we felt on stage, it was like it was fifteen minutes instead of fifteen songs. We give thanks for the Lions of Israel and Majestic Productions for making it happen. They are instruments of the Almighty Jah who have chosen to spread His message across the world and they are just coming off a successful tour with Abijah, a VP artist. We have had two days off now and are getting ready to leave tomorrow morning for Seattle, but during these two days, we have been doing some studio recording and laying down some new tracks featuring Brother Joseph, myself, Empress Rochelle, and Erica backed by the Lions of Israel band so we have been quite busy. I am really looking forward to relating our events and happenings with you and ask that you keep the message of Rastafari within your hearts -- universal love for the world. Greetings and blessings until Seattle from Mikey General. [Editor's note -- Mikey has invited Lehbanchuleh to join him on the 30th of November in Portland, Oregon so that should be an even more wonderful show with positive vibes flowing throughout.] Posted by Jeanette for Stone Tiger http://www.stonetiger.net [6]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Ras Marcus (#1573) Subject: Isis--reviews!!! Date: Fri, 21 Nov 2003 08:14:34 -0800 (PST) From: marcus brevik <3-seeds-radio@sbcglobal.net> Isis I to the RAW Massive! {This email also avaiable as microsoft word attachment} Reviews: Prince Tebah & the Sons of Thunder Communication Drums, Roots of Dub Funk vol. 3, Khani Jones Ancient Spirits, Nasio Living in the Positive, Journalist Bandoo Gone Too Soon, Heartaches & Pain sampler, Christafari Gravity sampler Prince Tebah & the Sons of Thunder: Communication Drums, Carib Sound Ltd. Communication Drums couldnt have come at a more perfect time. With reggae music touching people worldwide, and dancehall reaching new levels of popularity, it is ever important for the root and foundation of it all to be known. Upon receiving this album in the mail, I began to feel my temperature rise. And when I pressed play to be blessed with the word-sound-power, I wondered if the stereo was gonna catch fire! Prince Tebah & the Sons of Thunder reflect Rastafari in the fullness. Rasta culture shines forth like the morning sun within the seven hotta-hot traditional chants included in Communication Drums. This gathering of songs of praise, resistance, and liberation has a message for everyone, one love to all. The healing vibrations are undeniable. The music is so pure; sounds of nature and creation pouring out like waterfalls from the InIgelic (angelic) voices and drums of goatskin, coconut tree wood, and steel fittings. Formed from the beginning of creation, and officially united in the mid-1970s in Montego Bay, Jamaica, the Sons of Thunder have kept the Nyahbinghi heartbeat alive ever since. They are ambassadors of Rasta culture who have performed at numerous festivals and gatherings, including the famed Sunsplash II show in 1979, and now with the release of their first album (though no strangers to the studio), the Love message has even more potential to reach all nations. The final track on this album, describing Nyahbinghi, is a spoken passage given by Prince Elijah Williams from the forthcoming Book of Memory: A Rastafari Testimony. All in all, this album is as vital as water and air to the human structure. Each time I commune with the word-sound-power of Communication Drums, I feel every cell of my being uplifted and inspired. These chants are pure and true contact with life, no joke business, no dutty rock, and once the last track on the album stops, the sounds of the drums ring within your being for weeks. Praise Jah All-mighty for such a wonderful gift! Various Artists: Roots of Dub Funk vol. 3, Tanty Records Heavy like lead, light like a feather, Tanty Records has blessed the world once more with a high quality release including some of the finest musicians of current classic dub: Brain Damage (feat. Tena Stelin), Alpha and Omega, Dub 2 Dub, Jah Warrior (feat. Prince Allah), Version City Rockers, Dub Funk Association, Teacha, Burning Babylon, DJ Perch (feat Rudy Lee), Vibronics, and one of Ohio, USAs treasures: Ras Shaggai. Some of the songs are spaced-out enough to put one into a trance instantly, other songs have a real steady meditative chant feel, some songs have a rootsy feel to them, and all together they are beautiful. While at work, I find myself listening to the album day after daya perfect vibes to work to. And I get excited imagining the booming bass of this album when played on loud sound systemsessential for DJs and dub lovers alike. Tanty Records has once again pulled together some amazing music and compiled the tracks into a real dub gift. Highly recommended! Khani Jones: Ancient Spirits, rph productions, kid lightning records As a DJ, I get great joy from hearing an album unlike anything else Ive heard, which is what Khani Jones delivers with Ancient Spirits. A truly unique and Irie albumthe rock guitar and roots rhythms shines thru with a hint of r&b and hip hop. The musicians for the Meditations are present throughout the album.. the live instrumentation offers a real organic sound. Culturally conscious and committed to redemption, songs like ancient spirits cry out to the ancestors for guidance and the victory. inhale and exhale, who you gonna run to? are other commentaries on society offering direction and ways out of the brainwash. The album also contains a number of respectful love songs. This album allows Khani Jones to shine, and leaves I feeling, with further growth, he will produce some amazing albums as his musical career keeps on moving in the positive. Nasio: Living in the Positive, Higher Love Music Irie! The instant the horns ring out from the start of Living in the Positive, I know I had just been blessed with another mighty musical gift. Jah Rastafari inspired thru and thru, this album is a cultural force to be reckoned with. Africa is the shining star throughout, as Nasios conscious creativity carries I from strength to strength in tracks like Where We Belong, African Spirit, Ithiopia, Rise Up, New Song, Riding On, Black and Comely, and beyond. The musicians really provide a steady roots vibe throughout. When I first got this album in the mail, I had to play it twice over. My smile reached ear to ear. Only from the Seed of Solomon could such musical wisdom come. Nasios voice is unique, yet at times I catch a similarity in the vibes reminiscent of the Marley family sound. All together, this album needs to be in everyones reggae collection. Journalist Bandoo: Gone Too Soon, Wild Cubby Music From the moment I hear this album, my shoulders feel a little lighter and I feel like dancing. In addition to Journalist Bandoos vocals, the album contains a range of talented musicians. Mixed and mastered together, this album is quite a treat. The rootsy heartbeat moves throughout as Journalist Bandoo pours out song after song of upful praise and encouragement. We can make a difference now he sings in "Convert Bad Thinking", ..as long as the sun keeps shining. Prior to receiving this album, I had never heard the name Journalist Bandoo, and now after listening, I plan to keep my eyes open for further releases. Thanks and praise to the Most High, these songs carry positive energy straight to the heart. Various Artists: Heartaches & Pain Sampler, Total Satisfaction Total Satisfaction has made their contribution to the reggae world. I have received just a taste of the upcoming Heartaches and Pain compilation, a sampler cd including 4 different singers taking their turn to enhance a real nice dancehall rhythmwhich takes slightly different forms in each track. Lukie Ds Cant Get Away is a beautiful love song expressing the need to keep a special woman in his life; Jah Mason brings the royal Haile Selassie I message of Raspect thru this Rasta culturally-centered track about the right-and-just-ness of honor and raspect; Freddie McGregor brings forward more right-and-just Rasta culture in King of Glory-a livication to the earths rightful ruler of this Iration; and finally David Ondrick takes the track to a higher level with the addition of a flaming hot saxophone. With the taste I received, Im feeling hungry for more: Total Satisfactions Heartaches and Pain is a great addition to the world of reggae. Christafari: Gravity, Lion of Zion Very active in the reggae scene, until receiving this sampler for the upcoming Gravity album, I had yet to hear Christafari. Self-proclaimed as a reggae gospel pioneer, I was a little curious, because I have always considered reggae to be gospel. The early roots bands, the first ones to spread Rasta culture, are who I consider the pioneers of reggae. The sampler, which includes 4 different tracks-each of which with numerous versions, and two of which includes audio commentary about the songs-gave I the taste of Christafari I had yet to receive. Highly positive music, talented musicians, and motivational messages is how I could describe it. With Biblically-inpsired lyrics, it is easy to hear that ordained minister and vocalist Mark Mohr is using reggae as a method to spread a message of hope. Musically, this album is quite a trip.. a sonic collage of sorts. Im thankful for such a nice creation. About the title, Gravity, Mohr says "I believe the Bible speaks clearly of a spiritual law of gravity an inevitalbe occurrence that will either happen now with rejoicing or later in regret." All in all, this is an upfull and uplifting album.
