On December 11th, 1992 the First Conference, or should I say, the first Gathering of The Tribes assembled in my Home Town, Grand Rapids Michigan, to place into action a Vision of ALL Reggae Enthusiasts: Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide will be the primary reference for the Reggae Industry! That Vision is Alive! From a recipient's point of view of ALL communications into RAW, I must emphatically state that, Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide network is serving, and being served by ALL interested in Forwarding the Reggae Vibe, always remembering the vision of One Love. It is important to note that we should not sit on our laurels and say everything is all right. We should always strive daily for ways to make the Reggae Industry better. Bear in mind that over the past five years, with the introduction of the "Dancehall", "Hip-Hop" Reggae, the "One-drop rhythm" and the "Positive message," Reggae Music espouses took a back seat by some artists, and DJ's, I must add, who tried to fall into the "money ting". An Artist from Jamaica, is not necessarily a Reggae Artist...unfortunately, as portrayed by the multinational Corporation in the music industry! As I write, I must say that I am very happy, that according to recent writings and Interviews in some prominent Reggae publications, Some Reggae Artists and DJ's are going back to their Roots. Reggae Ambassadors was founded as a grass roots organization to become the primary Reference of the Reggae Industry, as we know it, When the One-drop rhythm does find its way to TV or Commercial Radio, it is more often than not, in the guise of a mainstream pop song, or a commercial. Without mainstream recognition of Real Roots Reggae, how are we supposed to forward the agenda we ALL wish to advance? We Don't! The future of Reggae music is NOT in focusing on across-the board mainstream exposure. That is the death-knell of true artistic expression. Indeed, if Reggae music ever became as popular, as we all might wish it could be, it is likely we would no longer recognize it. Or care to recognize it. I must hastily add that, it does not mean that if one is from Jamaica and he or she sings a song, That particular song is "Reggae music." As we move further on, into the 21st Century, we must strive for, as a member of Reggae Ambassadors Worldwide, to utilize the "key" (RAWster) available. We must cater to our current, established strengths. We have Radio programs, and Record companies, Clubs, Artists, Magazines, Vendors, Promoters, writers. etc. We don't need greater exposure. We just need to make the exposure we already have better. The 21st Century is the era of niche Marketing. There is so much media. That is so much potential exposure available to the public, that everything is becoming segmented. Big advertisers know it. They don't make one commercial to advertise a laundry detergent or an automobile. They make several designed to appeal to consumers in the city, another for those in the country, or rural areas, still another for those who speak a different language or are from another culture. These Marketers do much research so they know who their audience is. They communicate their strengths to that audience in a way in which that audience, NOT mainstream consumers as a whole, but in a way to which that specific audience will respond. We must point out the advantages of Reggae music to potential sponsors for our Radio show, for our Festivals, for lifestyle advertisers in our Magazines, and cable TV shows, other than music related advertisers. We can go to advertisers and sponsors and say, "Here are the people who are listening. They aren't all penniless social outcasts the mainstream media makes them to be. They are viable, growing economic force within every community in the world. (We have the statistics) We know after these many years who our audiences are. We can demonstrate who that audience is to the decision makers who can help Reggae music grow. We are able to say, "Yes! Reggae music doesn't have the big audience like Michael Jackson, or NFL Football at any given one time." That is not a negative. Rather exactly the benefit. The Reggae Audience may not be for everyone, but they are the niches that potential supporters seek. During the eleven years of RAW, personal achievement and setbacks have occurred with some individual members and their families. Most importantly, give thanks and praises! What is Reggae Music Reggae music has been popular in America since the 1970's. It fans are a cross section of primarily (though by no means exclusively) baby-boomers who discovered its syncopating rhythms and One-World philosophy in the music of Bob Marley and the Wailers, Steel Pulse, Peter Tosh and Black Uhuru among others. So pervasive is the style that Western artists as diverse as Eric Clapton is (he introduced Reggae to America with his '73 rendition of Marley's "I Shot The Sheriff"), Sting ("Roxanne"), Stevie Wonder and Lionel Richie have adapted its scintillating beat. Today Reggae music is a staple of college and alternative radio stations and is found in the record collections of discerning (i.e., non-mainstream/with disposable income) listeners. Most Reggae fans attribute their first exposure to the music to their college years. Smart marketers prefer college-educated consumers, as they tend to be in the higher income categories. Reggae fans take this benefit another step further: They are progressive in nature meaning they are not as close-minded as baby-boomers have recently become. They find favor with those who support "their" music and lifestyle. It is a rare opportunity to find an event where up to 30,000 of these preferred consumers could be exposed to your product or service.
