Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2003 11:29:54 -0600 From: Don Martin Greetings Wha Gwan from Don Martin (1478)! Still kinda tired but BROTHERHOOD'S 11 YEAR ANNIVERSARY WEEKEND was off the hook! Wanna thank all who supported us & encourage those who didn't, to do so in the future. I realize that esp. for the ABQ. people it is hard to come up on a Thursday night, yet I seem to see many of you when a Jamaican act is performing up here on a weeknight. Remember: it is not the Itals, nor is it the Wailers or any Jamaican act that is creating the scene in NM. It is radio-dj's like Eeyo, Sylko, Kelvin, Ijah, Steve Buggie,Jerry in Taos,Kabir and Nico AND club-dj's like Fido and myself who make it happen for you RIGHT HERE. And when someone like BROTHERHOOD turns 11 it is simply a sign of respect to try to pop in & support & congratulate & enjoy. Thursday was pure niceness at Paramount in the main room. Attendance was at about 100 but the session was solid & people enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Dabba, Mister Abo & Don Martin rocked the mic to the delight of the massive on riddims like Joyride and 007 ("007-Brotherhood turn 11, Santa Fe a go wail....") as new dubplates were presented and blended with the latest and nuff classics. Folks came from as far away as Moriarty and Albuquerque, so big unnuh !!! Friday night we played in the back room at Paramount for hip-hop night to the full satisfaction of that crowd, creating quite a stir and numerous requests to feature us there more often on Friday nights. Fridays at Paramount are off the hook with 300 + people in attendance every week, so we are seriously considering to pop in there once a month to give the hip-hop heads some hardcore dancehall as they are more than ready for it. Keep you posted on that. Saturday night it was time to celebrate 11 years of BROTHERHOOD on the fm, as we headed down to KSFR to co-host REGGAE RUNNINS alongside Nico. A fund-raiser for the station was going on but while we managed to raise nuff funds, we had tons of FUN as well. The show from Saturday has to rate as a classic in NM and whoever managed to get a recording is lucky indeed (despite the fund-raising). For more info remember to log onto www.brotherhoodsound.com. Thanks for supporting us & please continue to do so. Remember the ITALS will be @ Club Dread on 10-30 LIVE FROM JAMAICA and rumor has it that BEENIE MAN is in negotiations to touch down @ Paramount in the near future as well. Blessed love: Don Martin. OCTOBER 18TH INTERCOLLEGE, NICOSIA, CYPRUS - RECORDING WORKSHOP 10:00 am - 4:00 pm Where politicians have failed for decades musicians and lyricists are making big strides in seconds. Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand - as Stevie Wonder once said. With this theme in mind, a group of people will get together on Saturday 18th October to jam, write and record songs, beats and ideas for inclusion on the second CD/LP from Olive Tree Music. What makes these people unique is this will be the first time many of them have met and in most cases the first time they have recorded together. As Cyprus has been unnaturally divided for the last 29 years, with people only up until last April being denied access to each other, this workshop will hopefully produce some magical musical works. The day will be co-ordinated by US producer Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector, lyricist Haji Mike, poet Zeki Ali, bouzouki master Mike Minas & various people from the world of music based in Cyprus. OCTOBER 18TH POETZ4PEACE LIVE ON RADIO AND TELEVISION IN CYPRUS On Saturday October 18th, Poetz4Peace will start an all out media blitz in Cyprus. After the workshop at Intercollege, Nicosia, Poetz will perform and be interviewed on a live television show on CyBC, called "Efharisto Savvatovratho" from 9 - 11pm. Later on that night all roads lead to TRENO nightclub in Kaimakli, Nicosia. Stand Out Selector makes his Cyprus debut with Haji Mike & Zeki Ali and The Roots Crew. It will be a reggae party all night long. Also, this same night the three member P4P "core" team also goes live on Johnny Deviant's "Missing Link" radio show from 11 - Midnight on CyBC 2 for an exclusive Poetz4Peace on air session! Listen via the website: http://www.cybc.com.cy/audio.htm OCTOBER 19TH LEDRA PALACE HOTEL, NICOSIA, CYPRUS POETZ4PEACE LIVE DEBUT @ UN DAY The newly formed 'Poetz4Peace' will be officially launching their debut CD 'A Pair of Olive Leaves' live at the UN Day event held at Ledra Palace. UN Day has played a vital role in bringing the communities of Cyprus together in a spirit of harmony, peace and tolerance. It's held at Ledra Palace, the hotel that has been empty since 1974. One of Poetz4Peace new songs pays tribute to the building that has for many decades played a symbolic role in the Cyprus peace process. "Party @ Ledra" predicts a future where people can simply dance and accept each other. It celebrates a better tomorrow, and is expected to get the estimated 8,000 + crowd moving as one righteous family on October 19th, 2003. OLIVE TREE MUSIC CYBER-REMIX PROJECT - http://www.peaceremix.com Olive Tree Music will be spreading its branches online on the 15th of October. From various destinations around the world people will be able to download music loops from Poetz4Peace adaptation of 'Down by the Riverside'. Producers and musicians worldwide will then record their own rendition of the tune, as seen from their point of view. The remixes will then be sent back as Mp3's and a panel of seasoned music producers and poets will select the best versions of the song. Winners will be announced and then a compilation of the tunes will be released by Olive Tree music in 2004. For more details and info about this project please check out: http://www.psmrecordings.com/remix/ POETZ4PEACE MEMBERS TO BE FEATURED ON NATIONAL BELGIAN TV Haji Mike & Zeki Ali, the main lyricists in Poetz4Peace will be filmed in early Spring for a documentary on Cyprus. The tour was amazing and inspiring on many levels. Musically, the performances from all the artists and bands were excellent. Technically, every concert starting on time, without any problems, and to enthusiastic, and for the most part large, audiences. Emotionally and spiritually, the vibrations everywhere were very, very high. We began the tour in eastern Arizona on the very remote Hopi Indian Reservation. Ten thousand Indians live in eleven ancient villages on top of a high barren mesa. It is truly an inspiring and mystical land. The Hopi people are some of the gentlest, humblest, warmest people any of us have ever met. Unlike many Native tribes, their ancient spiritual ceremonies and customs are still intact. The first two days Abijah, Julia and I took the concert/reasoning to four of the six Hopi grammar schools. The young children really responded to our message that their tribe is special--chosen by the Creator to be the "Keepers of the Covenant." After centuries of being perceived as second-class citizens, this perspective gave them a different view of themselves. On Friday, Sept. 12, we had a concert at the high school with over 800 students and teachers. This concert included The Lions of Israel band (Chris, David, Lanky and Dwight), led by the electrifying Joseph Fennel, who gave outstanding performances, as they did at the other concerts on the tour. LA-based reggae recording artist Zema performed there as well to an enthusiastic reception. The energy in the high school auditorium was electric from the moment the students took their seat. When the students rushed the stage during Abijah performance, the maintenance man complained to the principal that they might tear the bolted seats out of the floor. His response was, "Let them. I'm not going to do anything to dampen their energy." That night we had a public concert at the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center with another 400 people. Abijah, The Lions and Zema were in top form. Uproot, an excellent reggae band from Yuma, AZ led by George Flores, also played at this concert, again to an excited and grateful audience. Abijah was the headliner, giving command performances at all concerts. Within minutes, he had the audiences up in front of the stage dancing and singing with him until the final encore was finished. His stage presence and connection with his audience is truly inspired. (You can see video footage of our Jamaica concerts with Abijah at our Website: www.onelovepress.com. Just click on "One Love Concerts.") During our reasonings with the Hopis, Julia and I explained that we had chosen to begin our tour in Hopiland because of their prophecy and tribal commitment to live a peaceful life in balance with nature. Also we explained that since God's currency is love, Hopiland is one of the richest places in the US. We thanked the Hopi nation, which to us includes everyone living on that land (Hopi, Navajo, Tewa, Apache, Comanche, white people, etc.), for keeping the 900 year-old covenant their ancestors made with the Creator to stay on that land and keep the scared instructions needed for the time when the world entered "Koyannisqatsi" ("world out of balance"). These instructions are simple: 1. Make your own covenant with the Creator. 2. Live simply. 3. Practice self-denial (avoid too much "pleasuring/owning"). 4. Practice self-sufficiency (do not abuse the planet). 5. Change your priorities. Make careful choices. 6. Recognize that it is the Creator's wish to rescue us, and that, together with the Hopi, we can rescue the world. 7. Think of attitude as being equal to application. Be in good humor. Do not be angry or have sad thoughts. (What we think, we create.) 8. Make your attitude regarding life and the environment a reverent one. We explained that we had come to help bring these "instructions" forward at this time and that unlike many white people before us, we were not here to tell the Hopis they needed to be more like the white culture but rather that the white culture needed to be more like the Hopis. While we were there, our Hopi friend, Rondina Huma, took us to the "Prophecy Rock," where the prophecy was first given to the tribe around 1100AD. There, carved into a massive rock, is the graphic prophecies that have unfolded over the centuries. Standing on this very spot where the prophecies, warnings and instructions were first given was a moving experience, especially given the intent of our journey there. It was also very humbling. Knowing that, like most young people, the Indian youths longed to live less remote with more access to movie theatres and shopping malls, we explained that they have something precious that few in our country have--a tribe and a tribal home. We explained that many of us seek the entertainment of the movies and the shopping at the malls to fill the hole we feel for having so few roots and so little sense of community. Our message was well received by the students, who responded with applause and enthusiastic yells to all the main points. Perhaps the most touching testimonies was the comments of the daughter of a Hopi chief, who told Joseph Fennel that her father had been trying to tell the youths this for years and only got a deaf ear. Dawn, a teacher at one of the grammar schools, came up to us with tears in her eyes. She said she prays everyday for all people to know peace and we had taught the "Hopi way" perfectly to the youths. By the time we left on Saturday, Julia, Abijah and I felt we had successfully completed our vision of helping to encourage healing on the reservation--a healing that their prophecy says will trigger a global healing. We also felt we had given the tribe a vision of themselves and their value--a perspective that often is clearer from the outside. We had brought the message to over 1500 people there--15% of the tribe and 90% of the youths. The seeds are planted. Give thanks! From there, Julia, Abijah and I, along with the Lions of Israel, flew to Fredericksburg, VA to perform at the One Love Peace Concert, again to a very enthusiastic crowd. The concert was put on by a very heartical family, Brian, Katarina and Nesta Fletcher, who operate the Natural Mystics Reggae Shop nearby. Abijah and the Lions went on to Arkansas, where they played at Chester's, a reggae club. Then the drove to Chicago, where they played at the Wild Hare. We all linked up in Winston-Salem, NC to play Ziggy's. We then had two concerts at local colleges, Warren Wilson College in Asheville, NC and Appalachian State University in our home town of Boone, NC. In Asheville, where the concert was co-hosted by Nicole and Sean Bookman, who operate Namaste, a local healing center, several local musicians joined us including, Ras Christopher and Timothy, the local reggae DJs, Ras Berhane and Amy, and Babacar and Laura. In Boone, Bum's Lie, a local reggae group, did an excellent opening for The Lions and Abijah. As always the audiences were on their feet all during the shows and applauding for encores. The Lions and Abijah just got tighter and better as the tour progressed. Closing the tour in our home town to over 350 enthusiastic students was a great way to close the tour. Our message to these audiences was always the same--to encourage them to claim their position in Creation to teach One Love (unconditional love) to their friends, family and all those they encounter. There was a vibe in each concert that is hard to describe. Everyone the tour touched, whether you were performing, helping or in the audience, was moved by our combined message of healing our lives, our schools, our country and our planet, through love and forgiveness. Some were moved more than others but everyone was moved. What's next? We are beginning book three in the trilogy and planning a college tour, as we feel our message is most effectively received at this level. The tour will include a two-hour multi-media reasoning and spiritual travelogue through our journeys in Jamaica, The first Gathering of the Healers in Kingston at Bob Marley's home in February 2002, The Fires of Forgiveness in Pt. Antonio in June of 2002, the Healing of the Nation Concert at the University of the West Indies in Kingston on February 6, 2003 and this latest One Love Tour in Jamaica and Hopiland. We will then follow each presentation with a reggae concert. Let us know if you would like to arrange a gathering at your local college. In so doing he has become one of the most important voices in international music. In 1985, inspired by the likes of Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, Lucky gave up a successful career as a traditional Zulu Mbaqanga singer to pursue his Rastafarian beliefs and launch a career as a reggae artist. The album ³Rasta Never Die: recorded against the wishes of his record company was banned and consequently met with little success, but he rushed back into the studio and created ³Think About The Children² almost in secrecy. It was an immediate success eventually going gold. Lucky¹s career as a reggae artist took root. Despite the banning of some songs by the South African government then still at the height of apartheid, his next album ³Slave² went gold. Subsequent recordings, ³Together As One,² ³Prisoner,² ³House of Exile² ³Captured Live,² and others were trenchant works filled with lyrics dealing with social issues and spiritual inspiration in the best tradition of Lucky¹s heroes, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Meanwhile, Lucky embarked on the most relentless international touring schedule becoming popular in Europe, America, the Caribbean and most notably throughout Africa where he became the best selling artist of the 80s and 90s. Traditionally, reggae has been a genre entrenched in social commentary. It¹s fitting that Lucky, possibly the most popular and talented roots reggae artist, would hail from South Africa, a country now undergoing major democratic reform after more than 50 years of the racially divisive apartheid system. Dube has chronicled the struggles, hopes and issues of South Africa and the world at large through his music, keeping the fight for freedom in the minds and hearts of people all over the world. Lucky added to his stunning musical legacy in 2000 with ³The Way It Is² (Shanachie), ³Soul Taker² (Shanachie/US) released June 2002, and the latest in 2003 ³The Other Side,² released on GMR in Africa and Heartbeat/Rounder in the U.S. and Europe.
