Date: Thu, 2 Oct 2003 05:44:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Jahmark Greetings One And All, Hope this greeting finds everyone in the best of health and strength, for without health there is no strength and without strength prosperity seems as a distant dream. At the moment we are currently upgrading the JAHMARK & THE SOULSHAKERS website to include more information on the band members, a band photo page, a fans photo page, easier access to our music via mp3 audio clips, etc., a guest-book page, video clips, a Jahmark's art-work page, a culture page explaining who Emperor Haile Selassie 1 is and somewhat the Rastafarian views on life, a current events page dealing with some of the issues happening around us in the world today, etc. From time to time we'll be having giveaways of JAHMARK & the SOULSHAKERS CDs, DVDs, posters and Jahmark's artwork, etc. I would like to bring your attention to a few gigs coming up over the next couple of weeks which are important for us to have a good turnout in order to show hard-core support for Reggae music here in sunny southern California. The major labels are not really doing anything for JAH music so it is up to us at the grass roots level to make this happen and have a real good reggae time while we are doing it... respect to all lions and lionesses but you know the deal, "when the sexy girls come out on the dancefloor all the shy guys follow". These events are all "first-time" performances at these particular venues with the exception of the Lighthouse and are as follows:- 1) Sunday Oct. 5th @ THE HOP in Lakewood from 9:30pm 'til...(ladies free before 10pm) tel.#(562)630-2229, (562)787-6067 (if we get a good turnout this gig may become a weekly SOULSHAKERS CELEBRATION!!!) 2) Saturday Oct. 11th @ THE PIER in Long Beach from 9pm 'til...JAHMARK & THE SOULSHAKERS will be performing alongside their friends LOCAL CULTURE and WORLD ANTHEM (this one could turn out to be bi-monthly and eventually spreading out to Orange County, San Diego, etc., featuring all three bands as a sort of MINI-SUNSPLASH!!!) tel.#(562)596-7522 3) Monday Oct. 13th @ diPIAZZA'S in Long Beach from 9pm 'til...this gig features JAHMARK "UNPLUGGED" without the Soulshakers (aw... :o( )but includes other musical guests acoustic style (there will be a live taping of all the acts performing that night and from that taping a LIVE! CD will be produced and made available to the public SO "LEMME HEAR YOUR VOICES screamin' and shoutin' on the CD as well when I play it back in a couple of months"...if you get my drift!!!) tel.#(562)498-2461 4) Sunday Oct. 19th @ THE LIGHTHOUSE in Hermosa Beach... JAHMARK'S BIRTHDAY PARTY!!! (same day as Peter Tosh and Evander Holyfield so we'll be celebrating a triple birthday)... this one I need you all to turn up JUST BECAUSE!!! (ha-ha) tel.#(310)376-9833 I know that some of you do not live anywhere near these areas but if you have friends who do, SPREAD THE WORD!!! I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the SS fans who have supported us and our music throughout the years, and also to welcome our new fans into the fold because as we well know without you all there would be no us!!! LIFE IS A CELEBRATION!!! so come celebrate with us everytime, there is already more than enough trouble in the world at this time for us to waste time adding to the trouble...A Sunday evening with us may very well get you through Monday morning and the rest of the week... :o) May the Most High JAH RASTAFARI continue to guide and protect and bless each and everyone of you and remember "say no to drugs, practice safe sex and let's all be positive in our endeavors 'cause life is much too short for all that other BS"!!! There are some of you who still do not have our LOVE POWER CD (released in '97 and re-mastered and re-released in 2000). Our brand new 2003 summer release LIFE! is also available so if you like what you see and hear at our live gigs don't forget to pick up your copies via our website!!! Respect to all, Big-up!!! Below please find the album's press release and some related biL "Magic Thumper" info: PSM4906-2 biL "Magic Thumper" CD Street Date: 09.09.03 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hello, biL? Its biL... Positive Sound Massive Recordings presents "Magic Thumper," the debut release from sonic sous chefs biL. Psycho-acoustic instrumental big-beat therapy sleeps around in a freestyling game of musical beds. Drawing from a diverse pallet of styles (turntablism, dancehall-reggae, hip-hop, surf, etc) and a braintrust of talent, biL is the spacious whole greater than the galactic sum of its generous parts. An inspired partnership between San Francisco's Stand Out Selector (renowned beat-builder & dancehall innovator) and multi-instrumentalist Allen Whitman (The Mermen, Deep Field South, etc.), biL also features the talents of DJ Quest (Live Human, Space Travelers), Dan "Automator" Nakamura (world class mixer - Gorillaz, Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030), Jim Thomas (The Mermen), Paolo Baldi (Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Deadweight, etc.) and Kevin Mummey (Penelope Houston, San Francisco Klezmer Experience, Blue Room Boys, etc.). A busload of other players contribute to a burbling big stew simmering on the front burner of your underground stereo stove. Even before the completion of "Magic Thumper" biL tracks had already started hopping out of the hutch. With the inclusion of "Standy's Handout" on the PSM compilation release "Mi Selecta," biL had already begun to see worldwide airplay (John Peel's Radio 1, etc) and positive exposure in international music magazines (The Beat, etc). Interactive computer gaming giant Electronic Arts chose "Smell My Favorite" (Track 6) to stink up the soundtrack to its hit "Hot Wheels" release, alongside Metallica, Primus and Mix Master Mike. Other special uses have included it's use as background music for MTV's ultra deep "All-Star Challenge" and VH-1's uber ovary "Born To Diva." "Magic Thumper" releases in North America September 9th, 2003. Check out the PSM Website http://www.psmrecordings.com for free downloadable songs, the video, and the translation to "Bunnies At The Border." But, only if the pen pushers at the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences (NARAS), the organisers of the awards show give their consent. "We are initiating discussions about breaking the category into two and having a roots grammy and a dancehall grammy," said Roger Steffens, chairman of the Reggae Grammy Committee who spoke with THE WEEKEND STAR from his home in Los Angeles, California. But, if this good thing comes, it will be to those who wait. "This cannot be decided until the major grammy meeting next April so it would not affect next year, it would be 2005 (awards) that it would affect." Steffens revealed that the notion to have an additional category is 'no hurry come up thing'. He said, last year the committee finally decided to analyse the idea but because of the few albums that were submitted in the reggae category the idea was thrown off the table. "The idea of splitting the category wasn't even worth discussing at that point, we would have been laughed at," said Steffens with a chuckle. Earlier this year a warning was issued by the committe that enough albums were not submitted and the category would be axed if it did not match the minimum requirement of 25 albums. Thanks to that red alert a flurry of albums was submitted that more than doubled the minimum requirement. As a result the notion to move for an additional category has been taken from underneath the rug. With regards to how likely it is that our music will gain the additional category, Steffens says his guess is as good as any other man on the street. "I haven't a clue. It has to be adressed at the next major membership meeeting in April. Until then it is a wait and see thing," noted Steffens. Since 1984, Reggae music has been recognized by NARAS with an award. Still, many have 'cussed' the organizers of the show for not televising any of the 18 presentations made to the genre so far. So will this move to suggest an additional category increase the probability of the presentation being shown live? Forget about it, says Steffens. "There is no way the reggae award will ever be on television. The things that they televise are the ones that have huge mass appeal and reggae is such a tiny fraction of record sales in America, it is not even on the map," emphasized Steffens. "It is not even worth talking about they are not going to do it, it will never happen."
