Date: Mon, 13 Oct 2003 12:00:51 -0700 From: molinus Greetings Massive, Just got this response to my request to Leroy for more details regarding his FOUR awards at the World Music Championship in Burbank. He was delighted when I asked him permission to share his unedited personal message with the forum. Way to go, Leroy! Anna Fisher (#1224) Hi Anna, Greetings and we would like to thank you and all of our brethren and friends in the LA area for your kindness and your support for Roots Music. This event has hundreds of participants. We anticipated that our strongest competition in the Drum music category would be coming from Ghana, Nigeria, Senegal, Brazil and South Africa. Some of these countries send send participants but did not send their drummers to participate South Africa had the strongest African delegation with vocalists, dancers models, actors, etc.........but no drummers. The Mabrak drummers then had to compete in another band category which had drum, bass, keyboards, guitars and horns. I was not amused and was hardly anticipating this radical artistic situation; If I had known this then I could have taken The Thunderclap Rhythm Section with me. I did not even have the full Mabrak Drum Section which consists of five. There was no Bass Drum........... So I had to discard the pieces that we had rehearsed and come up with different pieces to be competitive in this category where entertainment value ranks extremely high to the panel of judges. I had to do this in one day and make the submissions. So I went to The Mabrak Musical Archives for relative pieces to submit. We rehearsed the pieces in the dressing room before going on stage. This was the first time in over 25 years that I felt nervous before hitting the stage because I would be singing "Feel Alright" and I had not done any kind of vocal preparation or exercise and I did not have a drop of honey to prepare my throat;so I drank some water. We won 1 silver medal for original composition and 1 for contemporary composition. We won another silver medal for original instrument composition and one more for contemporary composition. The pieces were "Feel Alright", Take Five, A Touch of Class and Fire Dance. I've got to go rest my head and I am sleep deprived......... We hope to perform in LA in a few weeks time and we would like you to open for us, Anna . I like your current CD and your version of "Life in the Arena"......it is excellent............It takes me way back in Kingston.. Click the link above for the current tour schedule. About 'Imisi and "Visions of the Father"... Imagine venturing on a flight to the South Pacific via Air Jamaica with a Bible and some soothing reggae to pass your time--now you’re in the mood for 'Imisi, a new group that will take you to the next plateau in gospel reggae. In Tonga (an island near Samoa and Fiji), 'Imisi (pronounced ee-mee-see), means "Image," for man was created in the "image of God" (Gen 1:27). Made in His image, people of all cultures and languages reflect something of His likeness and through the powerful music of this diverse Polynesian group we have been given a unique vision of the Father. 'Imisi is headed by brothers David (Tevita Ka) Fohe, Jubilee (Siupeli Koula) Fohe and Joel Roberts. On "Visions of the Father," David’s sweet textured voice eloquently contrasts Jubilee’s smooth nasal tone and clever singjay stylings. 'Imisi has been compared to everyone from Luciano to Gregory Isaacs, and even labeled "The Reggae Katinas." This labor of love took two years to record and was produced by the top players in the secular and gospel reggae markets; Quino from Big Mountain (the best selling U.S. reggae group) and Mark Mohr from Christafari (the best selling gospel reggae group). In addition to the vibrant vocals and lush harmonies, the band lays down some top-notch melodies and hypnotic beats. These addictive cuts also contain outstanding musical performances by some of Jamaica's finest reggae musicians mixed in a dubwise fashion. The Beat Magazine said that 'Imisi’s music "sits smoothly in the lovers rock mode praising Jesus Christ as the most high." Their heart-felt lyrics of praise sung smoothly over rolling bass-lines and infectious beats are the perfect recipe to satisfy any appetite--sugar couldn't add any sweetness to these tasty tunes. With their strong introduction on 'Visions of the Father,' (which initially appeared as a standout track on Christafari’s Gravity album), 'Imisi has already established themselves as the voice of island music and the future of gospel reggae. Fusing an unshakably God-centered message with the full intricacies of bona-fide Jamaican reggae, these Pacific Islanders from the Kingdom of Tonga are in great contrast with the message of today's top secular reggae acts. Yet, given their island heritage and the Christian nation that they hail from, this profound gospel group is earning respect in the least likely of places with their clean production, solid vocals and uncompromising faith. "The songwriting on this album is flat out excellent and the vocal performances will give you goose bumps," says Quino from Big Mountain, "leaving no doubt that what these brothers are singing about comes from a place in their heart that does not waver… these brothers are for real!"
