It has been successful beyond imagination, to the point where I'm spending an awful lot of money on a "hobby." After much prayer and consultation, I have decided to take it to the next level, that being a fully licensed, independent webcast a la major internet stations such as Radioio.com, 3WKRadio.com, etc. Not only do I enjoy bringing roots reggae to the massive, but I feel obligated to both the listeners and to the many artists and others who have helped me along the way. However, streaming "legal" means paying Babylon big fees for licensing (BMI, ASCAP and SESAC) plus royalties, in addition to bandwidth costs. Going "professional" has the advantage of eliminating the hassles of listening currently via Live365 (log-in requirement, pop-up ads, lots of audio ads, etc.) and allows me to control my own destiny. I will soon be rolling out a website re-design to reflect these changes. I am currently streaming to almost 4,000 daily listeners and anticipate significant growth with this change in my broadcasting status. Which leads to the hard part...in order to reach all of these reggae lovers, I am going to need help in the form of advertising. I'm going to begin with very inexpensive rates to allow businesses, label, artists and whomever is willing to give internet radio advertising a shot, to see how well it performs. I will be offering both website banner ads and in-stream audio ads. I know that most of us are struggling at what we do, and I'm certainly not going to ask people to subsidize me without getting more than what they paid for in return. My goal is merely to recoup half of my expenses in the first year, but trust me, this won't be easy.
