PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! Web Poll asked the question: "What do you feel that the current state-of-affairs for Reggae is? (a) Excellent : 22.6% (b) Good : 33.9% (c) Fair : 30.1% (d) Bad : 13.2% There were a total of 53 responses. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Some forwarded their comments along with their vote... here is what they had to say: - to much volence bu´t if da real rasta should be good and try there best to other brother man - it can only get better! - i think rastafari need to open up more to the public and stop acting like a cult. - we want it to be excellent but it cant be because most people who deal with reggae right now they just go for dollars we just want positive vibes with spiritual ingredients - depends where you are in the universe in Jamaica they lost the plot around 1985, I,ve heard better rythem from other places, but Jamdown still has singers. - I am encouraged by the great number of roots releases recently and the new roots bands I am hearing. - better than in the 80s... - With the increase in the number of Artists in the International charts even though they are Dancehall i always hope people will get to hear the Roots through checking these Artists, As there are so many great Roots Artists and great Music out there to be discovered by the mainstream listeners. - The term "Reggae" is the label that is thrown 'pon every type of Caribbean/World Music. While it is nice to see Sean Paul in the headlines, I wouldn't say he is a necessarily a reggae artist, but more of a dancehall/raga singer. Reggae is the roots and roots is where it is at. Reggae needs a big shot in the arm from a promotions standpoint, if and only if the artists want to break into mainstream. The message is there and is aligned for the times. - It just seems like music all around has become $$ washed and white washed. Its cool that all the artists are "crossing over" to a larger, international market. However, it just seems as if there is no longer a message in the music. Its all about your bling bling, how many girls/guys you can sex up and your clothes. It just seems like to me, people forgot the real reason for music, reggae an the like. - Roots Reggae is going the way of Folk Music in America..good,vibrant,but outside of a few classics, better off seeking smaller venues - Would like to hear more of the roots reggae; as opposed to dancehall - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Big up and respects to everyone who participated! There is a new R.A.W. Web Poll on-line now... let's hear from you! Regards, A.T. Ever since our first coming to California, we have always played at the Belly Up Tavern. We've probably played there seven or eight times already. The drive from Los Angeles to Solana Beach is about two hours so some people who were at the show at the House of Blues in LA drove down for the show. The San Diego people are always receptive to good reggae music. I think it has a lot to do with a large Mexican population because the Mexican people really love reggae. Before our performance, there was a band that I think was called World Beat - I can't remember the name right now but they played a mixture of soul, hip hop and reggae and were very good. The show was highly energy charged from the minute Mr. Forbes touched the stage to the last song sung by Luciano and myself. There is something about a receptive audience that brings out the best in an artist - it must be the flow of energy. "Exalt Jah" was well-received and I was able to sign some autographs after the show. We left early in the morning for New Mexico. New Mexico is another very special place that we love. There was a big holiday festival being kept in Albuquerque when we arrived; I think they call it "Route 66." The show was kept in a venue right across from the hotel so that was good as we were able to walk around easily. Because we reached early that morning, we were able to check in early, do our shopping and anything else that we wanted to do. Luci directed me to a book store in where we were able to get a lot of books. I bought several books on meditation, spirituality, the Falasha Jews of Ethiopia, and other extensive reading. The reading is good for us because music is a reflection of what is happening in society and what is happening around the world and also a reflection of people's thoughts and ideas. Music is a medium in which we can express those thoughts and ideas so reading these books about spiritual matters helps charge us up spiritually so we can go out there and give the people the energy. Kabir, a Rasta bredren from New Mexico, who is well in touch with the music, had prepared a gift for me and Luciano which were some scarves that he had hand-knitted himself so that was also very great. The show was about 9:30 and it was certainly a beautiful show. There wasn't a lot a lot of people as it was about 3/4 full but it was a very fine reception. Albuquerque is the home to a lot of Rasta people and also Native American people so they were the main audience and it was really a nice vibration. Rastafari vibration flowed the whole night through. Solid performances from Mr. Dean Fraser, the JahMessenjah Band, Luciano and myself were the order of the day. It's really uplifting to be carrying this message and to see how it touches the lives of so many different people. We left the next morning for Dallas, Texas. Dallas is a town that we've been to twice before. It's a very nice vibration because there is a large mixture of Caribbean and African-American people who love the music. We reached Dallas about three o'clock in the day so there was ample time for us to get ourselves together, to rest and to meditate. The show started at about eleven o'clock to a partly full house. The vibration was strong right from the beginning through to the end. Sometimes working in front of Caribbean people, you tend to have to work harder as they are not easily moved. But than again, that helps the artist put out his best which is very important. The audience was receptive and there were a lot of young people and I could see that they were really touched by the music. They were also receptive to new songs like "Exalt Jah" and a song called "Joy" from the upcoming album with VP entitled "Red, Green, and Gold." Luciano was in his element. When he was finished, he was wet from his head to his toe and had been truly enjoying himself on stage. This is also a very important criteria when you are working the stage - the people must see that you are enjoying yourself and that joy that you feel, they will feel it too. We left about two o'clock the next day for Houston. The show in Houston, like Dallas, had mostly African-American and Caribbean people but they were more dancehall-oriented people as was evident by the way they dressed. The show was ni-ice from start to finish. Luciano worked himself to the bone and I, myself, was wet when I came off the stage. We left that venue at five o'clock in the morning because it was a late start at three o'clock in the morning. We had to leave the venue straight to the hotel and get ready to leave the hotel by twelve o'clock to head to Austin. We didn't finally leave the hotel until about two o'clock and when we reached to Austin, I was a bit late for the interview with Sista Irie. Sista Irie is such a sweet soul; she is doing a lot of work for the Jamaican National Children's Home and also helping to promote the works of Rastafari worldwide. I was disappointed not to be able to do the interview with her but it couldn't be helped. The Flamingo Cantina has always been a special venue for us. The owner Angela tries always to keep a positive flow of reggae shows passing through and it's definitely the reggae haven in Austin. The people are always receptive there and I can tell you that that show was one of the best shows so far on the tour. The people loved every minute of it. The JahMessenjah Band started at eleven o'clock and than Mr. Dean Fraser came blowing up a storm followed by myself. The new songs "Exalt Jah" and "Joy" were well-received as well as "Sinners" and "Miss Taylor Boy." Luciano seems to have a boundless energy as every night he works until he's wet and the next night, he just gets up and does it again. I know that when you are doing Jah works, he supplies you with the strength and the energy to succeed and to do it well. It was a good show. We signed autographs and I received a gift from Sista Irie but I left mine and picked up Luci's by mistake so that was a bit disappointing because the gift that she gave Luci was such a wonderful gift that I'm sorry that I didn't get to see mine. I want to big up Jah Flex and the Flamingo Cantina people for the contributions that they have been making of their time andservice to the Jamaica National Children's Home. [Editor's note - for more information regarding how you can help, please visit http://www.stonetigerentertainmentgroup.com/charities.html] We left early in the morning at four o'clock for Fayetteville, Arkansas. Fayetteville is a quaint little town and is the home of Brother Joseph of the Lions of Israel band. Brother Joseph is always at hand to supply us with everything that we need, both physically and spiritually. Fayetteville is the home of a lot of Rastafari people and a lot of Africans too. Sometimes when we reach a hotel early, we're able to do laundry and all sorts of things to get ourselves together so since there was a laundry room at the hotel, we were able to wash our clothes. Prime I, the disc jockey, came and checked me at the hotel and brought some cds that he had received from Stone Tiger for me. The opening band of the night was the Lions of Israel which was made up from some local bredrens. Joseph is the lead singer and Brother David is the lead guitarist. They told me that they had just done some works with the members of Ziggy Marley's band who had played some rhythms for them and they wanted us to listen to them but unfortunately, time was against us and we weren't able to but we were encouraging them to just hold the faith and stick to the righteous path. Joseph is a Rastaman who I met earlier at Kansas City; he told me that he first got introduced to Rastafari by the music and the music led him to Haile Selassie and Haile Selassie led him to the Bible. And in the Bible, he learned about Yoshua, the Christ. He said that he had grown up in the Church and was disillusioned with the teachings of Jesus as it was taught in the Church but in hearing it from the point of Rastafari, he realized it was an expression of divinity which is available to all if they will just see the God within. The show was a nice show - a beautiful show. It was half full for a Monday night and the people were receptive from the beginning to the end of the show. I don't want to sound like I'm blowing our own horn but the band and the package is a good package as I'm sure that anyone who has seen the show will tell you and we are doing great works spreading the gospel of Rastafari. We signed what autographs we could and left the next day for New Orleans. New Orleans is a place where we have always enjoyed a good vibration. Maybe it has something to do with the southern hospitality and vibration but people down there are very warm and loving. It might be the creole influence. It is always one of the high points of our tours. The House of Blues in New Orleans is right on a street where there are a lot of clubs and there is always live music around. We had to drive immediately after the show so we didn't have any hotel that night so we got ourselves assembled form the bus and hit the stage. New Orleans is also home to a lot of Rastafari people so we got a good reception. From start to finish, JahMessenjah Band was in fine form. Dean Fraser, as usual, was very good as was I and Luciano was awesome, as usual. We give thanks for the opportunity to meet so many different people and it's refreshing to know our music is playing a big part to change the way people think. By coincidence or Jah-incidence, in the House of Blues, there is a big picture of Sai Baba, an Indian avatar, who I was reading about in the book "The Spiritual Tourist." It seems like the House of Blues clubs all over the world have something to do with Sai Baba because I noticed that they all have the same symbols and some sayings of Sai Baba at every House of Blues that I have been to. [Editor's note - Sai Baba preached at Shirdi all his life and performed miracles to convince people that God exists. He healed people's diseases, provided moral and material comfort to his Devotees and helped bring Unity and Harmony between all communities. He said that God is one, but called by different names. He said to follow your own religion and seek the truth.] The show finished at about twelve o'clock and we signed autographs until one than we got ready to go to Tallahassee, Florida. Blessed love until next time! All is irie here in the Rocky Mountains, this last week we got slammed with just enough wicked reggae to forward the consciousness. Last night I was blessed to perform (I&I TreviB) and the Higher Livity Sound System @ the Double Diamond in Aspen opening for the world renown Toots and Maytals! Jr Toots opened for TOOTS with some positive vibes and the band rocked the house down, big up to the Maytals! Last Sunday we we were blessed with the Wailers @ the Double Diamond another sweet show Aston Familyman rippin' some sick bass lines and Earl Wyle Lindo holdin' it down on the keys and of course Jr Marvin sang sweet bob tunes, battling the audience for the lyrics it seemed. He closed the nite with an acapella medley of all our favorites, praises for the vibes! Other incredible shows lately would have to include Winston Rodney & his burning band who visited Vail & Club 8150 last Friday. Its hard to put into words but given the dancefloor bounces supa hard anyway Spear had it goin' like a trampoline! Melodic chanting by Winston as always and I am always blown away he rips so hard on the drums! Another Big UP to the incredible performance by Burning Spear & his Burning Band! The next day Sat 8/23/03 I cruised down to Red Rocks in Morrison Colorado to see Reggae on the Rocks, slightly hesitant to go because of high ticket prices in the past & cancelled acts last minute ...my friend Sabrina happened to put me on the Wailers guest list so of course I had to attend (thank you JAH!) Israel Vibrations laid down a tight set of classics as well as new songs off their killa new album Fighting Soldiers, Jimmy Cliff gave an high energy performance and actually did the splits at the end, the crowd was thrilled! The Wailers came on and again rocked it hard competing for Bob's lyrics with the Crowd, excellent! Ending the show was Burning Spear & again how sweetly the sounds of Rodney's voice and how smooth the sounds of the Burning Band...absolutely blew doors on the 8150 drum jam session by goin' off for hours it seemed (so stoked!) Consciousness & positivity abound! keep a strong heart & an irie meditation ONE LOVE every time! ~trevi B lioness presents RAW#1538 [7]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Roots-ee (#214) Subject: The Ark Band/RAW 1414 @ the Lil Negril Jerk Hut in Marblehead, Ohio on Sattaday August 30, 2003 Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2003 12:59:09 -0400 From: Rlam from http://www.funcoast.com/fullstory.html?sku=2003082823383763498 ( special section of the Sandusky Register, Sandusky, Ohio ) ============================ Hangin'at the Hut Throughout Jamaica, the landscape is dotted with small wooden "jerk" huts with corrugated tin roofs, where friends gather to drink, eat the spicy native foods and listen to the music of the Caribbean island. A place to hang out with friends and cook some Jamaican food was what Marblehead Galley owner Mike Fontana had in mind when he built his own authentic hut -- the Lil' Negril Jerk Hut -- three years ago behind the restaurant. "I go to Jamaica all the time," he said. "I learned to cook like that and I really love the music." The menu features Jamaican specialties, including jerk pork, grilled snapper and curry chicken, as well as Red Stripe Jamaican beer. But when Fontana brought in live reggae music, the concept really took off. "I started doing bands and a lot of people started showing up and I made it 10 times as big," he said. "The response has been great." Every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from roughly 4-8 p.m. -- but usually later -- the Lil' Negril Jerk Hut features live music from regional reggae bands including Plus Band; Outlaw I-&-I, which plays Sunday at the Hut; and The Ark Band, playing Saturday night. The Ark Band, founded in 1987 by the "Riddim Twins," Terry and Eustace Bobb, has performed around the country with reggae heavyweights including Burning Spear, the Mighty Diamonds, Shabba Ranks, Toots and the Maytals, Yellowman and the Wailers. While reggae usually brings to mind Jamaica, most of the members of the Columbus-based Ark Band originally hail from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia. "Reggae music, like any other music, although it originates in Jamaica, is also played by the people of the Caribbean," explained manager R. Errol Lam, also known as Roots-ee. "We think that it's a uniting music, bring people of all ages, races, abilities and walks of life together," he said. "It becomes kind of an equalizer and no one cares where you're from." It also has another effect, he said. "The kind of music we play, it makes people happy," Roots-ee said. "Even though the music is not always happy, ( roots-ee's note: meaning the music does not always address 'happy' themes ) people come away with a feeling of happiness." one, peace, roots-ee http://thearkband.com http://thearkband.com/gigz/index.html [8]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Roots-ee (#214) Date: Sat, 30 Aug 2003 13:24:00 -0400 From: Rlam Subject: An initial report of the ark band's travels wed aug 20 to aug 24 ( bredda J sent i a report but i erased it in error.i now summarize what bredda J wrote to i ) **wednesday aug 20 @ club viva, st louis where culture just performed--- the massive was very enthusiastic and seemed to sing along with every song. many compliments were showered to the max on the ark band's musical performance that night.
