PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! The Wailers in Santa Rosa Date: Mon, 01 Sep 2003 12:39:38 -0700 From: Yasmin Solomon >From DJ SISTER YASMIN, Crucial Dance Riddims, Northern California RAW # 56 Hard work, perseverance and the power of many working together in unity for a good cause, finally came to fruition at the Last Day Saloon in Santa Rosa, CA last night, as hundreds of Irie, happy revelers came together in Peace, Unity and Love. THE WAILERS were fantastic, I World International Rockers, the opening band, were at their very best, and the guests were fantastic! This was the most packed house and best vibes Reggae event that I've participated in at this fine venue, since I started working there 18 months ago. WHAT A NIGHT and what a PARTY! Wow! The people who run and work at this club are the nicest, most professional folks and are warm, friendly and kind. The sound is impeccable--Big Up to Jared the house soundman, and The Wailer's soundman was a real PRO. They sounded great! Everyone sounded great--for real, (including me). It was truly a magical night and finally, the Sonoma County (and well-beyond) posse turned out en masse to support Sweet Reggae Music at this fine venue. BIG UP to Ken O"Donnell and Sheila Groves of McNear's MYSTIC THEATER who wisely and kindly did not do their Israel Vibration show that same night on top of our show. THANK YOU MYSTIC THEATER! Nuff respect due! More thanks and RESPECT to our "Street Team"--Sister SHEKEYNA, Jonathan, David in Ukiah, I World Int. Rockers and all the many, many of us who postered, handed out fliers, and got the word out to the Massive and brought in the crowds, finally! Bless you all, and a special Big Up to BOB SLAYTON who's Calendar goes far and wide and is always right on time! Ditto for RAW who helps immensely with spreading the word. I have not seen the local papers, but if you helped us bring in the crowd, thanks to you too! And also thanks to radio for your support! So, I am just a bundle of JOY today and really want to thank EVERYONE who made happen such a great event, especially DAVE, BILLY, ALISSA, DIANE, ROBERT, JARED and all the many workers at the Santa Rosa LAST DAY SALOON, who worked so hard to make this event such a success. Thank you! You are wonderful! (am I gushing? I just can't help it). I know I forgot someone or several someones. So, if I didn't mention you, you know who you are, you know how hard you worked to make last night so beautiful, and THANK YOU EVERYONE! And last but not least, to the Reggae Lovers who participated, danced, and put out so much love, good vibes, happiness and joy last night---BLESS YOU ALL! It would not have happened without you! Thanks for coming. THANKS TO THE WONDERFUL WAILERS FOR sharing with us YOUR TALENT, YOUR LOVE and your transformational MUSIC! I do feel transformed today! Halleluyah! Praise Jah! Now, if we can keep this high, positive and wonderful energy continuing and growing, this club can become a truly wonderful Mecca for Reggae Music in the North Bay area. I hope you will continue to support. PREZIDENT BROWN & The Solid Foundation Band will perform there on THURSDAY, SEPT. 11th (a Reggae celebration is appropriate for that day of all days), and YELLOWMAN and The Sagittarius Band will play the following THURSDAY, SEPT. 18th, both shows 9PM, 21 and over. OK, what did I forget? Oh yes, it is always Rocky's birthday right around Labor Day (mine too) and there was a great chocolate cake. HAPPY BIRTHDAY/EARTHDAY to all of we VIRGOS! Reggae Music is strong, healing, powerful and brings us all together in LOVE and Unity. At least, that is the ideal. So, let's keep it moving forward and build it stronger. See you at Prezident Brown and Yellowman, and again, THANKS TO EVERYONE! It was a night I will always remember. Much Love, Respect and PEACE us all and the WORLD. Heres the story: We arrived at the Queen Mary parking lot about 1PM after a nice 1 hour drive down the 5 and 710 freeways from Simi Valley...traffic was smooth and free-flowing the entire way. We parked in the Queen Mary lot near the festival entrance which was rapidly filling up at that time, more with people visiting the Queen Mary then festival people. I was thinking, being a big holiday weekend, there could be a major problem with parking space here later on in the day. We got out of our van and started unloading our stuff and the first thing I noticed that was unusual was all these security guys roaming around the lot, like three or four of them. If you had your car open and didn't immediately go in they would come up to you and say "You can't take any food or beverages in" and then they would kind of hang around watching you, with a general demeanor that said: "You need to lock your car and leave the parking lot, now ". OK, so we got the not-so-irie message, and we take our backpacks/chair and umbrellas and take the short walk to the festival entrance. The first thing I see at the entrance is a long line at the gate and no one in line buying tickets...then I see the sign that says among other things, NO UMBRELLAS! I say to them," whada mean...no umbrellas? No where on the flyers or anywhere did they specify no umbrellas." There is essentially no shade in that place; We are not gonna sit in the hot sun for four or five hours for any reggae festival. Ive been going to Caribbean and Reggae festival for years at the Queen Mary Park, no umbrellas has never been the policy. Thats why I never went to the California Reggae Fest at the Green in Signal Hill/LB, because they had this stupid and unreasonable "no umbrella" policy...they must have some disgruntled person from that fest running operations at this festival...and don't tell me they do it cuz they are worried about people's view being blocked...thats never been a problem, and if it was, it could be easily remedied by simply requiring that the umbrellas be in the back, as some festivals do. They must think umbrellas could be used as a weapon; They confiscating my rain umbrella at the gate at Bob Marley Day in LB a few years back, probably for the same mindless reason. So, we are wondering whether to take the umbrellas back to the car and return and sweat it out in the sun, or just leave. Then I check the long lines at the gate, two lines of about 30 people each, and its still early and hardly anyones inside yet. Then I see why, security is checking everyone with a fine tooth comb, making people take everything, and I mean everything, out of their pockets and backpacks, etc. They were even going so far as too look into peoples cigarette packs(obviously looking for joints). The next thing you know they will be asking people to take off their shoes. Anyway, my guess was, on the average it was taking one to two minutes to search each person, so if you do the math, thats a 30 to 60 minute wait...totally unacceptable. And one could imagine what security was like inside...talk about bad vibes at the one love festival, how ironic. So, we left and went home, disappointed in the whole situation but feeling fortunate we didn't waste our money on this kind of event...good reason not to buy advance tickets, especially on a festival with no track record...this was the their first annual. Anyway, as far as we are concerned, these Southern California Reggae festivals and their ugly and exploitive operational policies have reached the point where its no longer an enjoyable experience and certainly not worth the money they charge. I know we won't be supporting and patronizing these type events any longer. One Love, John Newcomb RAW # 593 [5]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Natural Mystics Reggae Shop (#1583) Subject: One Love Peace Festival Date: Mon, 1 Sep 2003 18:29:50 -0400 From: Natural Mystics One Love Peace Festival 12-9pm Sunday, September 14, 2003 Fredericksburg, Virginia, USA Natural Mystics Reggae Shop has been hosting an annual reggae festival for the last three years, in its hometown of Fredericksburg, VA, to raise awareness of the AIDS pandemic in Africa. This year’s event will focus on the need for a non-violent world, and has taken on the name One Love Peace Festival, named after Bob Marley’s famous One Love Peace Concert, held in Jamaica in 1978. Marley’s familiar lyrics “One Love. One Heart. Let’s get together and feel alright,” have become recognizable by people of all races and nationalities, and the One Love Peace Festival hopes to exemplify this phrase and serve as a day of community building for Fredericksburg, VA, as we together enjoy a day of peace, love, and unity among all people. The highlight of this year’s festival will be Jamaican Reggae Artist, Abijah and American author and guest speaker, Robert Roskind. A student of multiple art forms and a culture singer, Abijah has made a name for himself on the international reggae scene with uplifting, original songs, including his hit “Revelation” which stayed on the top of the charts in Jamaica for over 30 weeks. With a 3-album deal with VP Records under his belt, and a vocal style and musical message reminiscent of Bob Marley, Abijah is on his way to international stardom. Robert Roskind, author of books "Rasta Heart: Journey into One Love" and “Gathering of the Healers” has been at the forefront of the universal message of peace and unity through all nations. In 2002, Robert, along with his wife, organized 30 "One Love" concerts throughout Jamaica, with performing artist Abijah. Mr. Roskind will be a guest speaker at this year’s festival. This year’s event includes several talented regional and international reggae musicians & DJs, peace activists and public speakers, grassroots organizations, vegetarian and all-natural food and beverages, art & craft vendors, all day drum circle, and a no drug/no alcohol family environment. The festival site at the Fredericksburg Fairgrounds is centrally located and easily accessible from Interstate-95. Approximately an hour from our nation’ s capital of Washington, D.C., Richmond, and Charlottesville, it’s becoming a great spot to bring together reggae communities from all regions of Virginia. Reggae has always been music with a message, and bringing consciousness to the people is its foundation and legacy. Through love and understanding, reggae breaks down barriers and invites peace and unity as a way of life. The One Love Peace Festival hopes to bring together people from the greater Fredericksburg area and surrounding towns to enjoy a day of great music, feel good food, and community building. All things positive are embodied in reggae culture, so come out and join us on Sunday, September 14, 2003 and experience the reggae vibe! Performing Bands include: Jerrod’s Door Foundation Stone JohnStone Crucial Elements Soldiers of Jah Army Jah Works Abijah (with Lions of Israel) Partial proceeds from the event will benefit local charities. We had a great time in Marblehead, Ohio... at last!! After a string of rain outs, The Ark Band finally got to play at Ohio's little slice of Jamaica - 'Lil Negril Jerk Hut in Marblehead. The people who run this place really love their reggae and Jamaica. The taste (awesome food) and the feel of 'Lil Negril scream Caribbean. The vibes of the place alone make you feel like you've gone to the Caribbean. The Ark Band then took the journey one step further with word, sound, power. The St. Lucian riddim twins, Terry and Eustace Bobb are joined on stage these days by fellow St. Lucians Alvin Marcellin & Denisson Charlemagne, as well as very recently joined Ras Shaggai, & Jonathan Taub, and their MC, DJ Smoove. Also on stage was long time Ark Band friend & also friend of Bob Marley, Prince on Percussion. The band solidified the authenic Jamaican vibes with both covers and originals that represent what roots reggae is all about- One God, One Love, One People. The band than detoured the journey to St. Lucia with some Calypso and Soca music that is hard NOT to dance to. Bringing us closer into US waters the band showed us how well rap and reggae mix together. Also, they even did some R&B songs with a reggae flavor. It was a beautiful night with great music. Give thanks. Sunday August 31-- After playing several nice outdoor gigs at Captain Woody's in Buckeye Lake, Ohio, the final Ark Band gig this summer was a good inside one to primarily avoid the rain that did eventually fall. It was an upful end to a successful season at Woody's. The crowd was smaller than usual due to the weather but the fans were just as attentive as the Woody's gang usually is. They sang, danced , screamed and all had a nice time. On the Road With Mikey General -- full journal available at http://www.stonetigerentertainmentgroup.com/blogger.html [Tallahassee, Jacksonville available on the site] .... Orlando is a very special place for I and I not only because of the large Jamaican population but also because some very good friends from Bath, St. Thomas in Jamaica live there. The show in Orlando was full. CC has a reputation for being a good promoter and we were told that whenever he says an artist is coming the people always look to him because he will deliver. Dean Fraser's mother lives in Orlando and has a restaurant there so we saw most of his family which was very special because they are good people and they have always been supportive of us over the years. From the start of the show to the end, as usual, it was "da bomb." The people were very receptive to the music and reinforced our faith that we are doing the works of the Almighty bringing the gospel of Rastafari to the nation. The show started at two-thirty finishing at five o'clock. We signed autographs until six and headed for the hotel to get ready to leave for Ft. Lauderdale. The show in Ft. Lauderdale featured, along with Luciano and myself, Richie Stephens, Frankie Paul, and Warrior King. It seems there was some complication with Warrior King and he wasn't able to make it but Richie Stephens and Frankie Paul were there. We were suppose to start from eight o'clock but it seemed that Richie and Frankie must have forgotten the time and we left slightly late and didn't get started until after nine. Like a batsman on the cricket side, I was the opening bat but because of the limited time, I was only able to perform four songs which were well-received by the audience. I was followed by Richie Stephens who gave a beautiful performance followed by the incomparable Frankie Paul singing hit after hit after hit and last but not least, the messenger himself, Luciano. And not forgetting the maestro, Dean Fraser, and the JahMessenjah Band with Jamusa from WAVS as the mc for the night, I must say it was truly a good show. We signed autographs until after two and than we had to leave as we had the long drive to Atlanta ahead of us. By four o'clock this morning, we were on our way. [Editor's note -- I attended the Ft. Lauderdale show and it was truly outstanding -- all of the performances were excellent and it was wonderful to see the show that I'd read so much about from the tour journal and the reviews come alive in front of me. And I did see the Ethiopian cross that Mikey purchased in Jacksonville -- it's beautiful.] I'm just this moment finishing reading the book on the Falasha Jews of Ethiopia which helps me to get myself in a frame of mind to deliver my message. The Falasha Jews are an important part of Ethiopian and African history as they have endured persecution over many, many centuries and have still stayed faithful to the laws of Moses. They are descended from the 12,000 Jewish subjects who were ordered to follow Menyelek, the First, the son of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba to Ethiopia. They have been tenacious in their faith, never denying the God of Israel, and are today united with the people of Israel and are also a light unto I and I Rastafari people for the steadfastness of their faith. Luciano & Friends - A Review by Edi Fitzroy -- full review available at http://www.stonetigerentertainmentgroup.com/blogger.html The whole show last night was very good going from one solid artiste to another so that the people were never waiting for one to finish so that another would come. It was very spiritual and all of the artistes worked well, especially Mikey General - I liked his presentation and his performance was both fun and touching. Everyone in the audience was laughing during "Mis Taylor Boy" as I think that we could all identify with the lyrics and Mikey acted out the song very well while singing. Frankie Paul, Richie Stephens, and Luciano all performed well and the JahMessenjah Band was in top form and I liked Dean Fraser's fifteen to twenty minute stint. For most promoters out there putting on shows, I think that it's a very good idea to use an instrumental opening act. It's a form of tranquility and puts one into a meditative mood before the singers begin. The attendance at the show was very good and what I noticed was that there was a mixed audience with a wide age bracket. >From my point of view, we need more shows of this nature where people of every age can come and enjoy a good concert. The only flaw was a minor problem with the sound that was quickly remedied by the sound crew and the fact that the show started a little late so that each artiste had to cut part of his set. To be fair though, I was only in the front of the house for the first part of the show and went into the back stage area after Mikey General's performance. The excitement in the crowd was evident during the show and the people came closer and closer to the stage as each artiste came on eventually overrunning the VIP seats in front as everyone left their seats to dance and move with the music. It is always a different perspective from back stage as you watch both the artistes and the crowd - it's as if they are all part of the performance. New rules for US visas -- All US visa applicants must visit the embassy Article from the Jamaica Observer (08-31-03) at http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/news/html/20030831t020000-0500_48264_obs_new_ rules_for_us_visas.asp In my alter ego as an attorney, I've received a lot of emails and inquiries over the past few days regarding the changes in Immigration laws and the new requirement that all US visa applicants must visit the embassy and I just wanted to assure everyone that it's not quite as bad as it sounds. For awhile now, there has been a general policy of bringing everyone in for an interview (post 09-11) when getting their visas and about 3 months ago, a memo was sent to the embassies telling them to specifically do so. What the article is referring to is that it is now (by October 2004) becoming a must. You can no longer renew while in the US or as a part of a group where one member or agent visits the embassy. You must attend an interview at the embassy itself. Many people already do that right now anyway. An attorney or agent can still file for you but you must attend an interview once the process is complete and the petition is approved. All of my clients and the artists that I work with generally do attend interviews at the embassy (it's been the policy in Jamaica for awhile) and I interact with the embassy regarding questions and making sure that they have what they need. The reason for the requirement of an in-person interview now is so that fingerprints and other biometric information can be taken for security purposes (faster identification and avoidance of mis-identification). Ultimately, this is a good thing as I know right now of an artist who is clearing up an identification issue as someone else who committed a felony in the US has a similar identity to his. Some last notes: There's been some confusion recently about the wonderful projects that the Tosh Foundation is currently working on and I wanted to take a moment to clarify them: * "Put My Faith In Jah" -- a limited edition fundraising CD for the Tosh Foundation available exclusively at http://ptosh.com with donated tracks from some wonderful artists including a little known acoustic track from Peter Tosh himself -- the project has been so popular with new artists donating tracks that it's release has been delayed slightly * Instruments for the Youth -- a wonderful project supported by many artists, both inside and outside the reggae industry, to provide musical instruments to underprivileged youth with more information available at http://www.instrumentsfortheyouth.org * "The Peter Tosh Tribute Album" -- the well publicized tribute to Peter Tosh supported by reggae and non-reggae artists alike including Eric Clapton, Jerry Garcia (the estate donated a track), and many more -- the album is scheduled for release in February 2004 with an advance EP available several months prior that will include tracks by Jerry Garcia, Edi Fitzroy, Martha Davis and one more Recent chat with Edi Fitzroy: * Yahoo seemed to be having some technical problems the evening of the scheduled chat and many people trying to enter the group were unable to do so that evening so we will reschedule for a later date once the technical issues have been worked out but do invite all of you to join the group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/StoneTiger/ or through the link from our home page at http://www.stonetiger.net so that we can keep you updated with future chat notices. I did notice that mac users weren't able to hear Edi speaking and so I needed to type all of his responses so I may investigate the possibilites of pal talk or yahoo messenger if yahoo chat won't work for everyone. We just don't want to leave anyone out! Lastly: * If you left any recent messages and didn't hear back, please call again or email as I was out of the office due to a medical issue and returned to such a hectic time with Mikey on tour that I am sure that I missed some of your calls.
