PLEASE! Date: Friday, August 01, 2003 5:28 AM From: "Tom Pearson" Greetings all! In recent days I have seen a marked increase of submissions for our newsletter "Wha Gwaan in RAW?" that do NOT follow the guidelines suggested, and which have been announced many times. I will REPEAT! Wha Gwaan in RAW? is a strictly TEXT-BASED newsletter. Since we must send out to members of varying computer capabilities, it is necessary to restrict submissions to TEXT ONLY. That means no graphics, color, sound, bells or whistles. No attachments! Anything sent with the above-mentioned extras will be returned to the sender, and WILL NOT BE INCLUDED in WGIR Also, today I received at least four messages submitted in HTML format. Now I realize how cool such announcements can be, but unfortunately, none of those extras (i.e. bolding, italics, underlining, etc) will show up in WGIR, and before I can send a message to Eric for inclusion in WGIR, I have to go through and delete all those commands. That means deleting every
,  , , etc. This is a very time consuming task, and one which I am simply no longer able to do. I have NO idea how messages are sent in HTML, I just know we can't receive them. If you are sending a message in HTML, I will, from this moment forward, return it to you, and ask you to re-send the message in basic no-frills text. So the basic rule for WGIR submissions is: TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT TEXT and NOTHING ELSE! Records Wailing Souls - Souvenir From Jamaica (AOR-97) The Wailing Souls' return with a solid brand new studio album, Souvenir From Jamaica. Pipe and Bread were there from Reggae's early days, growing up and singing in the same Trenchtown yards in Kingston, Jamaica alongside Bob Marley, Joe Higgs, and others. The veteran multi Grammy® nominated roots reggae duo's longevity has come due their adaptability to trends in the music without the compromise of their vision. Souvenir From Jamaica, recorded at the famed Tuff Gong Studios, has that vision and sound maintaining the group's vital part in reggae music in this day and age. The album was produced by the Souls' Winston "Pipe" Matthews and Lloyd "Bread" McDonald along with the help of the legendary drum and bass duo of Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare in Kingston along with an all-star musician line-up that firmly plants this record as one of the master works of their career. The title track of Souvenir from Jamaica features up and coming Jamaican dancehall DJ, Ragga Z. It is the first single from the album and will be accompanied by a music video and promotional vinyl single serviced to all mainstream niche video shows, radio DJs, and manistream/Reggae press. Dubwize concerts are intended to be an opportunity and sanctuary for the full expression and experience of life and the love and beauty that it offers and being amongst others. As the numbers grow larger, it is likely that soon or even now some of us who arrive at the concerts will be affected by the cruelties, false substantiations of war and other unnecessary abhorrent treatments of humans and other living things on this earth. Lets remember to make the slightest comfortable effortless extra effort to deliver kindness and love to all, as the person affected on any particular day may be me. Break open the piggy banks for these events, as this September schedule is likely to go down in reggae history and may never be repeated again. See you There! [10]------------------------------------------------------------------------ ----------------- >From Dubwize (# Date: Wed, 3 Sep 2003 13:32:25 EDT From: GlenChase@aol.com Subject: Burning Spear, Dubwize: Concert Report Welcome! Hope you enjoy. Give care, peace. http://dubwizemusic.com Concert Report: Dubwize and Burning Spear, Sunday, August 31, 2003, Slim's, San Francisco - one of the very finest two band concerts and you were/RAW was there. People were lined up down 11th street at 7:30 pm for a 9:00 pm Concert start. The doors opened at 8:00 pm and people came in with tremendous enthusiasm and satisfaction that they were now within Slim's walls and assured of a place within this concert. Burning Spear, a true living legend of Reggae music, and Dubwize, possibly the most exciting youthful and original reggae band today, stunning and awakening audiences with each performance. Even though the reggae crowd was so chill, there was still such a buzz in this wonderful Slim's concert hall thick of historical concerts amongst the so many that have taken place within its walls. There was a simple announcement at 9:03 pm: "...And now Dubwize, from the Salinas Valley." We've heard that before, but this time it was so simple, so basic, so nude and truly the quiet before the storm, and this expression never so well represented as this evening. It began with all ten pieces (drums, keyboards, rhythm guitar, lead guitar, bass guitar, melodica, percussion, tenor sax, trumpet, trombone) playing as one, as one sound that completely filled the high ceilinged concert hall. It gave each of us a glowing sound aura that was live and thrilling and doing its own dynamic dance. It was soft and sweet and then powerful, and then with surprising splashes as fiery rocks flying from the volcano and splashing in a pool of molten lava. The music was alternately seducing us and then exploding and sucking us along as a vacuum that the explosion creates right at its back edge. We ended up safe, but lived in the thrill of the edge of the explosion with the exhilaration of the travel, yet with a soft landing and with the joy and pleasure remaining. Shannon Craig, the sound engineer, released the dubs of their instruments so that the thrills echoed through us. His mix that evening was so good, that there is no memory or recognition that he did anything. The only memory is of the instruments all together and separately in perfect balance and so there was no addition or subtraction or distraction of the sound mix itself, it was absolutely perfect. Slim's was full during the 1 hour Dubwize set and it is arguably one of the finest short or opening sets of original reggae music played. Cannot imagine anything more, other than more time to take us even further into the Dubwize journey. There were many Dubwize fans who were dancing and screaming the beauties of life from within and singing out words of the Dubwize songs. These people found themselves amongst many of you, who were experiencing Dubwize for the first time and the mix of people was so sweet. And then there was a pause and a break and an extension of that break to build our already tremendous anticipation of Burning Spear. During this time, more people, but only with advance tickets already in hand, as it had sold out during the Dubwize performance, were allowed in. And the same space that was full for Dubwize, was now packed for the Spear. But no one complained cause who could deny anyone what was about to come. And then he sang and his band played and he sang the songs that are part of our lives and those that have companioned the friendships and travels of our lives and even been the key to remember that part of our life in association to the song that he delivered. Last year was Burning Spear's farewell tour, so just to be there this year with him performing in front of you was a gift, and the performance was all that was expected and much more and we will leave the details of it to those who are with Burning Spear every day and at every concert as we are with the Dubwize. The pairing of Dubwize with Burning Spear was a special one, connecting Dubwize to the near beginnings of Reggae music and carrying the Spear far into the future with his influence on Dubwize. We have attained beauty and quality in so many aspects and within and amongst so many of us. If we continue to touch others and share the experience and joy with them, the path may be the result we are trying to achieve. When so many of our species have been touched, only the leaders of nations, the ones who can't break from their cruelties to our species, will remain in their illusion and their distraction and their cruelty. But if their ways are only theirs and we as people are experiencing our own, then finally we will bring reality and the pure beauty and experience of life to the front and leaders will emerge from us with hearts bigger than their bodies, their hearts being all of ours, and they will lead and guide us as they have our hearts with them. Dubwize and Burning Spear were together on Sunday night, August 31, 2003 at Slim's - San Francisco. It is arguably the finest or one of the finest two-group concerts of all time, and a favorite event for many of us. You are beautiful, thank you. *********************************************************************** In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty Forward the Reggae Vibe...Every Time !
