They are still without electricity. Give thanks to the DJ's who're playing her gorgeously inspiring new album, "Black Sheep" on the Melchizedek Label! > Hey Anna! How was the show last night? I would have loved to come > and see you all but I pretty much konked out the whole weekend. > (This album release stuff is too much busy work!) I know you were in > fine form as always! I love what you do with the children. > Blessings, Zema Hey Zema, The show last night was so beautiful! So much love... As it was a benefit, all performers were there gratis. It took place the Celebrity Center International, a gorgeous glass and bronze pavilion built by the Church of Scientology to better serve their Famous Arts Compound. It was a rather strange interdependency as they came around passing out literature and spoke on the benefits of the center and its work. I'd been there before and it seemed obvious that nothing was going to penetrate the Rasta Spirit in the house!!! The venue is gorgeous though and the acoustics outstanding. The center was totally respectful and did what they could to assist us in our mission to provide a professional show to the adoring public. The show began about an hour late, 'Caribbean time' as we say but ended at 11:30 rather than 10pm and the Scientologists were not anxious to cut us short as the music got better and better all night. Actually it was outstanding ALL night!!! The MC was the energetic and vivacious, Akosua Adobea. I liked her energy and she made us all excited for the next act from start to finish! After G.T. spun some records, Akosua introduced a marvelously lush vocalist from Israel named, Jha-Voice. Her voice was similar in timbre to Sade but her lyrics and music more intricate. Just gorgeous!! She is working on her third release and her sound impressed all as she opened with her programmed tracks. Next up was Black Ice. I was backstage and when I heard his voice, I had to run out front to match face to sound as his voice was so gorgeous like that of Luciano, Ras Shiloh, and some of the other favorites. From St Ann, Jamaica and now living in Long Beach, he just finished an album titled, Deliver Me. He sang both the title track as well as Close to My Heart. He can be reached at YardGrooveRecords@hotmail.com Next was comedian, Amera (I was busy getting Black Ice's info so I missed her act. After came spoken word artist, Joann Gardner-Smith. Her work was truly moving. From Haiti was Ambroise, followed by Ali-Baba from Mali near the Ivory Coast. Then Akua & The Queens Compund came out with her own band. She had the place bouncing and swaying. I'd seen her at Bb Marley Day at Long Beach and we also did a show at the El Rey a few years back. The crowd loved her! Next I came out and played "Song For My Father" with the Dazani Band. The response was incredible. I'm not sure what happened but there was some confusion on the order so the band and I created a new tune (true improvisation) that transcended to a place only found in our imaginations! Next Isaac Haile Selassie did an energetic and lively set calling attention to the difficulties in Ethiopia and setting some positive solutions. Next was the Nyabinghi specialist himself, Ras Michael who continued to give raves to La.Dee.Dred for her efforts to promote peace and love. Ras Trevor joined him on the bass drum and Isaac played guitar accompanying him on the rasta chants as well as Bob Marley's Redemption Song. Now if that weren't enough, The grand finale consisted of La.Dee.Dred with her strong backing vocalist and tight band singing six or seven originals and getting the whole house on their feet! For La.Dee.Dred's set I played oboe, small percussion instruments and sang backup. It was such a wonderful night and the children seemed to be having the most fun! La.Dee.Dred now has six grandchildren of which I met at least four! Her five year old granddaughter, Heaven passed out the programs which said, "You are a part of history in the making and it could not have been possible without you witnessing this great event of cultures coming together from all over this God given and created world of diversities! Let this be a day to remember. Let love ring out in our hearts and not just from the tongue. For from every corner of this world, we have come to celebrate as one! And it doesn't matter what you call him, just be sure to call him. May the most high, ever keep and bless you forever more! Remember "911" and all our fallen loved ones, the starving, the missing and murdered children, the homeless and hopeless, the broken hearted and all the in between. Thank you for coming, La.Dee.Dred & Friends" She has quite a few upcoming performances scheduled and can be reached at: (323) 290-9604. Thanks for asking Zema, we know you've been burning your candle at both ends and would've been there if Jah didn't bless you with much need rest to recharge your precious batteries! Someone was videotaping. As usual, they were all inspiring. At the peak of the show, Luciano invited me up to address the audience. It was a little intimidating but with Julia's and Jah's help I made a respectable showing and reminded Luciano that now that he has proven himself he can open for me whenever he wants. On Tuesday, Julia and I meet Abijah at the Charlotte airport and travel on to the Hopi Indian reservation in Arizona. The Lions of Israel band will meet us there a day or two later, as will reggae recording Artist Zema and the Yuma-based band Uproot. On Weds and Thursday, Julia, Abijah and I will do free concerts at the Hopi schools (I'll just talk and spare everyone the pain of my singing). On Friday we will do a concert at the Hopi Junior Senior High School followed by a public concert that night at the Hopi Veteran's Memorial Center. (Below are the thoughts I plan to share during these two concerts.) From Hopiland we proceed to Fredricksburg, VA to do the One Love Peace Concert, then on to club dates in Fayetteville and Little Rock, Arkansas and Chicago. On Sept. 21, 22 and 24 we do concerts respectively at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, at Warren-Wilson College in Asheville and we close at Legend's in our home town of Boone, NC. We hope to linkup with some of you on the tour. Robert & Julia Roskind Authors of Rasta Heart and The Healing of the Nation roskind@boone.net www.onelovepress.com Address to the Hopi Nation Greetings, to our Native American brothers and sisters and a special greeting to our Hopi hosts. Welcome to "The One Love: The Healing of the Nation Concert." I would like to thank Karen Abieta--Sister Parrott--for helping us organize this event and Aaron Secakuku for welcoming us to the Hopi Veterans Memorial Center. Also our thanks to all the artists playing here tonight--Zema, Uproot, The Lions of Israel and Abijah, for sharing with all of us their musical message of One Love. Our being here tonight is not only a personal vision but we believe it is also part of a 900-year-old Hopi prophecy. We are here tonight with a deep sense of gratitude to thank all of you living on this reservation for keeping the Covenant that your tribe made with the Creator almost a millennium ago when you were told never to leave this land. This sacred Covenant was first made not far from here when Maasaw, the Guardian of the Earth, appeared as a messenger from the Creator and entrusted your tribe with certain prophecies, warnings and instructions, all etched into sacred tablets. In doing so, Maasaw placed in your hands, together with certain other ancient people in other lands, the fate of the world. The Hopis became, and for centuries have been, the "Keepers of the Covenant." Also, three people were named in these prophecies to help the Hopi in this matter: The Pauite Indians, the Navajos, and the Bahannas--white people. All are assembled here tonight. As you were instructed, for centuries you kept this information secret within the tribe. In every generation, youths were chosen to spend years in your kivas memorizing word-for-word this complex information. Once a year a few dedicated tribal members, the Elderly Elders, gathered to here it recited. Your elders were told that when the world entered "Koyannisqatsi," world out of balance, and the planet was "engulfed by efforts to force one's will upon others to the point that these efforts will have pushed mankind to the brink of self-destruction," you were to make your secrets public. We are now at that brink. This period is called the closing of the "Fourth Cycle of the World." The instructions went on to say that "when the gourd of ashes falls from the sky that grows brighter than the sun, making the oceans boil and the land burn, causing nothing to grow for many years" you were to make these secrets known to all tribes on Earth. Beginning in 1949, shortly after the first gourd of ashes--atomic bomb--was dropped, your elders went to the United Nations and made your prophecies, warnings and secrets public. They chose the UN because the prophecies further instructed them to go to the "house of mica on the Eastern Shore where the tribal leaders meet." Glass is made from mica and the UN building's exterior is all glass. Over 90% of the prophecies entrusted to your tribe have come true--exactly as predicted. You were told that there would come a time when people would speak through cobwebs and through the air; when there would be roads in the sky, travel to the moon and when houses would be built in a day. The prophecies referred to other races, modern accomplishments, pollution, and two global wars, fought under the symbols of the swastika, the German symbol and the rising sun, the symbol of Japan--all situations for which ancient tribes would have no frame of reference. Most importantly the prophecies foretold of the coming of the Bahannas, the White race, that would disturb the Hopi land and tribal ways and erect their own kingdom upon Hopi land. The prophesies foretold that if the Hopis resisted their land seizure by force, the Bahannas would attempt to annihilate all Native people but a remnant of these people would survive to carry on in the future. For centuries you and your ancestors have taken seriously the instructions from Maasaw to stay on this tribal land. You could have walked a few hundred miles in several directions and found abundant water, vegetation and fertile soil. Instead, for centuries you have tenaciously clung to these cliffs and mesas. It is a land prone to drought, extreme heat and cold, sand storms and a lack of arable land. Yet you have stayed. Later, as the encroaching white culture destroyed your peaceful tribal life, you seldom resorted to bloodshed believing that all things must be settled peacefully. With few exceptions, your tribe held to your Covenant never to use violence except to defend yourself. And if things could not be settled peacefully, the results must be accepted. However, the Elders tell us that these prophecies, warnings and instructions should not be a burden to our souls. They tell us that if we follow the instructions in our own lives, things will work out acceptably. Their final thoughts to us are: "Don't let the burden of worries trouble you into sickness. Let your hearts be filled with happiness, enjoy your lives to the fullest, for this is the best medicine for sickness. Live long, for there are great and exciting adventures awaiting you. So time passes on and the prophecies handed down by our ancient people unfold. Many great events lie before us, and we are witnessing today the fact that our ancients' words were right." And exactly what are the "instructions" we are told to live by. The prophecies refer to them as the "Road Plan and the Pattern of Life." They are as follows: 1. Make your own covenant with the Creator. 2. Live simply. 3. Practice self-denial. 4. Practice self-sufficiency. 5. Change your priorities. Make careful choices. 6. Recognize that it is the Creator's wish to rescue us, and that together with the Hopi, we can rescue the world. 7. Think of attitude as being equal to application. Be in good humor. Do not be angry or have sad thoughts. 8. Make your attitude regarding life and the environment a reverent one. It is clear that if many people on the planet would follow these instructions we could transform the planet and heal our societies. How many have to follow them and to what degree for this healing to occur we do not yet know. The Creator and Maasaw are asking us to totally change the way we view our lives and our environment. According to them we must "blend with Mother Earth so that we can truly celebrate life." People might wonder why this important information would be entrusted to a small tribe living subsistence, but highly spiritual, life in an isolated land. Why wasn't the information given to the powerful, technologically advanced countries? Until the discovery of coal, this isolation and lack of abundance, protected your tribe from the greed of other tribes and the advancing white culture. The Creator knew that your isolation, your close-to-the-land living, your spiritual life with over 216 days of celebration each year, would make your tribe the safest vessel for this priceless information. The Creator purposely gave this Covenant to a small group of Native American Indians that would outlast all the other tribes in North America in preserving their traditional ways and vows. He placed this sacred information with the Hopis because global balance will be created spiritually--not militarily, economically or politically. The Hopi are one of the best known Native American tribes in the world. Your very name means "Peaceful People." However, the deeper meaning is "a way of life that can continue endlessly." For centuries you were taught from infancy to avoid revenge and bitterness, which they viewed as "killing someone in your thoughts." Generosity was held in the highest esteem. Your teachings instructed you that "if your house is gleaming with beauty and good food but not shared with kindness, it is empty, without spirit, and not worth anyone's envy. Likewise, the humble home that is shared is beautiful." Your religion taught that to live this way, with respect for all life and in harmony with the true Hopi way, would help all people. Yours is a belief in non-resistance--don't fight, don't try to get even, even when someone hurts you, to seek revenge is to hurt yourself more than you hurt them. To help in this you were told that you never walked alone--Great Beings always walked with you. It is not by coincidence that conscious roots reggae music is so popular in Hopiland. In the last twenty years there have been 60 reggae concerts here, all in the building where we are standing, making this spot sacred ground. Your tribe was once the brightest flame of One Love in this area of the World. In the last 150 years with the coming of a foreign culture and the loss of many of your ancient traditions and wisdom, that flame has dimmed but it has never gone out. The One Love message of the reggae musicians that have visited here has blown on the embers of this once-great fire and kept it alive. We are here to do the same. Your Elders' worldview regarding war is also the same as these conscious reggae artists, who remind us all war benefits the rich and powerful at the expense of the masses. Your elders say, "In war, only the wealthy gain advantage and get richer. Fighting only brings destruction, sorrow, and increasing problems to the multitude of common people--no matter who wins the war." However, they go on to say "The survival of mankind and our planet Earth is only possible through peace--only if we, the human race, are willing to change and put peace first...the man-made system cannot be corrected by any means that requires one's will to be forced on another, for that is the source of the problem. If people are to correct themselves and their leaders, the gulf between the two must disappear. To accomplish this, one can only rely on the energy of truth itself." And for us to help restore love and peace on the planet, we must each strive to becoming as loving and as peaceful as we can--and the key to this is forgiveness, of ourselves and anyone we hold bitterly in our hearts. Many will think this is an over-simplification, that surely we need more than love and forgiveness to solve the world's problems. To them we would say that it is the lack of love that has created most of the world's problems, therefore it is the infusion of love that will heal them. The process is simple and gentle and yet carries more power than any other force in the Universe--the power of Love. The Elder Hopis believe that as our perceptions and attitudes change so does our outer world, without a single visible event taking place. Slowly, without most people even noticing, problems that existed before begin to disappear. Legalized slavery ends and oppressors give up their power more peacefully as is evidenced by the freedom movements of Gandhi, Martin Luther King and Nelson Mandela. Imperialistic empires like the USSR dissolve. With over half the countries being democracies--a relatively new form of government--people experience greater freedom; prejudice is diminishing and the respect toward women is growing. In our own personal lives, as we more closely follow this instruction, a new rhythm develops. We begin to heal our relationships and from this place of greater healing we experience greater energy and a sense of fulfillment. We have indeed begun to walk in the "Pattern of Life"--the path we have been seeking all our lives--the "Beauty Path" that the Creator sent us here to follow. You can claim this path whenever you want--no matter what you have done or what may have happened to you in the past. And since God's currency is love, it does not matter how much money you have or what your outer conditions might be. Every one of us can leave "Babylon" and enter "Zion" whenever we chose. Unlike many spiritual paths, the Hopis do not profess to have the "only right way." Again I quote from the Elderly Elders: "Now we must look at each other as brothers and sisters. There is no more time for divisions among people. Today I call upon all of us, from right here at home...where we too are guilty of gossiping and causing divisions among our own families; out to the entire world where thievery, war and lying goes on every day. These divisions will not be our salvation. War only brings more wars--never peace. Only by joining together in a Spiritual Peace with love in our hearts for one another, love in our hearts for the Great Spirit and Mother Earth, shall we be saved..." Last July 4th, my wife Julia, Karen Abieta and myself decided to bring a One Love Concert to Hopiland. We all felt that for a national healing should begin with the this country's "first people," especially those that were known for their peaceful nature. It was not until after we made this decision, that I read in your prophecies that the Great Purification of the planet is prophesized to begin when the healing of the Hopi nation begins. We are here, along with many others before us, and many to come after us, to encourage you to claim your tribal and individual destiny and teach this healing, this One Love, this forgiveness, to your family, your friends, your tribe, your country and the world. We are asking you to do this by doing one simple thing: to forgive as many people as you can, including yourself, as much as you can, as soon as you can. By doing so we can guarantee that your own life will become healed no matter what the tribal or national outcome. It is a "no-lose" proposition. As one of your Elders, David Monongye, said in his Prayer for Racial Forgiveness: Great Mystery, Help us with this healing, to forgive and help others to forgive. I pledge myself to working towards this future which I owe to the generations yet unborn. Help me to do this work, guide my hands, my feet, my heart and mind to work for this healing, for this redemption. Thank you for your patience with us! Thank you for this opportunity! Thank you for this Life! Thank You for Your Love! Thank You! In the past year, Julia, Abijah and myself, along with other conscious reggae artists, have hosted 30 concerts in Jamaica similar to this one. We performed to over 30,000 Jamaican youths in most of their colleges, their inner-city schools and many of their rural schools. Always we encouraged the students to activate this healing through their individual acts of One Love and forgiveness. Since our efforts began the murder rate is down 20%; the overall crime rate is down 19% even the traffic fatalities are down 10%. You, the Hopi nation, have been given a great gift, perhaps a gift that you do not fully yet appreciate. Because you have kept the Covenant given to you long ago, your tribe and tribal land remains--perhaps not intact but still strong and flourishing. You have something many of us living fully in Bahannas' world yearn for, though we may not understand this yearning. You have a home--a sense of place--and a tribal family. This is precious and rare in today's world. Hold it dear and celebrate it. We come here today as many have come in the past and many more will come in the future, looking for answers to our troubled world. Your tribe was entrusted with these answers long ago and you have successfully kept your Covenant with the Creator and kept these answers--these instructions--intact and now have offered to share them with us and all the world at a time they are needed if we are to avoid greater pain and suffering. For that and on behalf of my family, my wife Julia, Abijah, The Lions of Israel, Uproot and Zema, I would like to say "Thank You!" and that it is our prayer to realize One Love as reality everywhere. Give Thanks. After some great food from a vendor, we took shelter in the hospitality spot, hopeful... anticipating. Culture & Co. was in the area. The hospitality included Bloomington's finest, fresh juice, organic fruits and snacks as well as liquid refreshments. As The Ark Band mingled with Culture & Jabali Afrika, and played dominoes and laughed and gave thanks to Jah for the great days we've had... the weather began to clear. Looking out on the lush green hilliside you could see a haze. Soon the sounds of Kenya's Jahbali Afrika could be heard. They played high energy music and invited lots of participation, including people coming on stage and dancing. Suddenly on stage Gaboo, our St Lucian bredda from Columbus who was playing percussion came and did some dancing with one of the band members-- they were in unison like a rehearsed routine!!!! The crowd of people had a great time. These guys ( Jabali Afrika ) were really nice to play a show with. By the time The Ark Band played it was sunset. The vibe was nice. The crowd stayed in front of the stage and paid close attention. The steady reggae held them in the groove and the conscious lyrics kept all on high. The Calypso was tight. The rap was a nice surprise to the massive. The Ark Band really got every one in the mood for the roots reggae. And finally - CULTURE- It was great to see our old friends in the band and Mrs. Hill. Culture's band was great and Joseph came armed to teach the people. He sang some of his great older songs, recent songs and his newest songs including appropriately 'World Peace'- the title track from his most recent album. The crowd got a little sprinkle of rain during the set- just enough to cool down a drop, but not really get wet. All three bands put on revival style- memorable performances for a great day - All Praises to JAH !!! Simon and Aaron are two of the many Bloomington soldiers who helped make the day so nice!!! " ... quality American rootsmen - Pacific Vibrations ... The upbeat ska rhythms blend in nicely with the mellow roots foundation that features a hearty helping of trombone... I'm a big fan of artists who can remain faithful to the roots sound while blending in other elements, and Pacific Vibrations does it well. One minute you'll be grooving to a languid bass and trombone rhythm and the next a ska beat will perk you up. All in all this is an enjoyable listen and foretells bigger things down the road for this regional favorite." - DJ Bahilman, Creation-Steppin', web radio.
