When we arrived there at Kiener Plaza downtown in the early afternoon the crowd was already fairly large and made up of a mix of people of all ages and backgrounds (which shows why Club Viva in St. Louis is always lively on wednesday reggae nights). The stage was perched high above a large stepping waterfall which stayed laden with kids playing in the water the whole day. Smoke billowed into the sky from the barbques of the vendors. So many different bands played including Indika, Roots, Stems & Branches, Gizzae, The Ark Band, & The Storm from DC. Some of the bands even featured guest artists. One ( forgot the name ) featured a woman who had a CD (Angel or Angela ?) who had a nice voice. Eustace Bobb bassie of The Ark Band gave the people a delightful treat with his Steel Drum Soundz. There were even some African dancers with one of the breddas walking on stilts. All the bands gave the people a true representation of roots reggae at its best. There was also calypso, zouk, dancehall and even a Police song mixed in the selection. We missed The Storm from DC as we left early, but i am told that they did a reggae Hip Hop blend of music. As the day went on, there were more dreadlocks in the audience, and many dreadlock families could be found on the scene. Those that were in attendance know what a great Show-Me festival St. Louis sponsors. To those that didn't make it, I suggest that you come next year, even if you don't live in Missouri. The Show Me Fest is one of the best city Reggae fests around (and it's free!!!), as well as being one of the best family events, and the city square is perfect for it. One Love! One God! Below please find the press release and some related biL "Magic Thumper" info: PSM4906-2 biL "Magic Thumper" CD Street Date: 09.09.03 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Hello, biL? Its biL... Positive Sound Massive Recordings presents "Magic Thumper," the debut release from sonic sous chefs biL. Psycho-acoustic instrumental big-beat therapy sleeps around in a freestyling game of musical beds. Drawing from a diverse pallet of styles (turntablism, dancehall-reggae, hip-hop, surf, etc) and a braintrust of talent, biL is the spacious whole greater than the galactic sum of its generous parts. An inspired partnership between San Francisco's Stand Out Selector (renowned beat-builder & dancehall innovator) and multi-instrumentalist Allen Whitman (The Mermen, Deep Field South, etc.), biL also features the talents of DJ Quest (Live Human, Space Travelers), Dan "Automator" Nakamura (world class mixer - Gorillaz, Dr. Octagon, Deltron 3030), Jim Thomas (The Mermen), Paolo Baldi (Les Claypool's Fearless Flying Frog Brigade, Deadweight, etc.) and Kevin Mummey (Penelope Houston, San Francisco Klezmer Experience, Blue Room Boys, etc.). A busload of other players contribute to a burbling big stew simmering on the front burner of your underground stereo stove. Even before the completion of "Magic Thumper" biL tracks had already started hopping out of the hutch. With the inclusion of "Standy's Handout" on the PSM compilation release "Mi Selecta," biL had already begun to see worldwide airplay (John Peel's Radio 1, etc) and positive exposure in international music magazines (The Beat, etc). Interactive computer gaming giant Electronic Arts chose "Smell My Favorite" (Track 6) to stink up the soundtrack to its hit "Hot Wheels" release, alongside Metallica, Primus and Mix Master Mike. Other special uses have included it's use as background music for MTV's ultra deep "All-Star Challenge" and VH-1's uber ovary "Born To Diva." "Magic Thumper" releases in North America September 9th, 2003. Finally, in Poetz4Peace news, the album "A Pair of Olive Leaves" is set to drop in Cyprus, Greece and Turkey on September 22nd, 2003. The album has already received airplay in half a dozen countries, and promos are shipping all over the world as this goes out. The following is a list of some of the promotional events going on around the worldwide record release on October 15th and "UN Day" in Cyprus on October 19th, 2003. Poetz4Peace Promotional Events and Happenings for October 2003 OCTOBER 18TH INTERCOLLEGE, NICOSIA, CYPRUS - RECORDING WORKSHOP 10.00 am - 4.00 pm Where politicians have failed for decades musicians and lyricists are making big strides in seconds. Music is a world within itself, with a language we all understand - as Stevie Wonder once said. With this theme in mind a group of people will get together on Saturday 18th October to jam, write and record songs, beats and ideas for inclusion on the second CD/LP from Olive Tree Music. What makes these people unique is this will be the first time many of them have met and in most cases the first time they have recorded together. As Cyprus has been unnaturally divided for the last 29 years, with people only up until last April being denied access to each other, this workshop will hopefully produce some magical musical works. The day will be co-ordinated by US producer Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector, lyricist Haji Mike, poet Zeki Ali, bouzouki master Mike Minas & various people from the world of music based in Cyprus. OCTOBER 19TH LEDRA PALACE HOTEL, NICOSIA, CYPRUS POETZ4PEACE LIVE DEBUT @ UN DAY The newly formed 'Poetz4Peace' will be officially launching their debut CD 'A Pair of Olive Leaves' at live at the UN Day event held at Ledra Palace. UN Day has played a vital role in bringing the communities of Cyprus together in a spirit of harmony, peace and tolerance. It's held at Ledra Palace, the hotel that has been empty since 1974. One of Poetz4Peace new songs pays tribute to the building that has for many decades played a symbolic role in the Cyprus peace process. "Party @ Ledra" predicts a future where people can simply dance and accept each other. It celebrates a better tomorrow, and is expected to get the estimated 8,000 + crowd moving as one righteous harmony on 19th October 2003. POETZ4PEACE MEMBERS TO BE FEATURED ON NATIONAL BELGIAN TV Haji Mike & Zeki Ali, the main lyricists in Poetz4Peace will be filmed in early October for a documentary on Cyprus. The show will be screened next year on Belgian National TV. In this rare appearance, the two poets will talk about the works they have made together and the music label they founded with partners Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector and Mike Minas. Expect the unexpected, after all that's what real TV is about! OLIVE TREE MUSIC - CYBER-REMIX PROJECT Olive Tree Music will be spreading its branches online 15th October. >From various destinations around the world people will be able to download music loops from Poetz4Peace adaptation of 'Down by the Riverside'. Producers and musicians worldwide will then be able to record their own rendition of the tune, as seen from their point of view. The remixes will then be sent back as Mp3's and a panel of seasoned music producers and poets will select the best versions of the song. Winners will be announced and then a compilation of the tunes will be released by Olive Tree music in 2004. Important P4P Dates to Remember: September 22nd - Poetz4Peace "A Pair Of Olive Leaves" Mediterranean Release Date October 15th - Poetz4Peace "A Pair Of Olive Leaves" US and European Release Date (The Cyber Record Release will happen this day as well) More Press and Promo info for the 15th through the 22nd of October in Cyprus to come!!! [7]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Jeanette Smith (#1421) Subject: Blessings from the Artists on this Most Powerful of Days Date: Thu, 11 Sep 2003 12:28:37 -0400 From: Stone Tiger Stone Tiger - Blessings from the Artists on this Most Powerful of Days On the Ethiopian New Year, the 2nd Anniversary of 9-11, and the 16th Anniversary of the death of Peter Tosh: Edi Fitzroy in Miami: Peace and goodwill to all mankind on Earth. Be kind and gentle to your brother, even to your enemy. War is not the answer. Love will always conquer. Sing love. Eat love. Sleep love. For those who passed away on 9-11, my heart goes out for them. It is a sad day to remember. It was a wicked heart, an innocent life. We will always remember those who perished but remember that love will conquer hate. Peter Tosh and this day - 9-11 - a significant day - we will always remember Peter as a steppin' razor for equal rights and justice because as Peter said, you must have rights and justice before you can have peace. Live on, Peter. Live on. Steppin' Razor, keep on steppin'. It's a blessed day for this celebration of the New Year. HIM Emperor Haile Selassie I stated at the OAU Conference that until the color of a man's skin is of nor more significance than the color of his eyes, there will be war. We must remember his words on this of all days. Rastafari guide. [For a memory of Peter's last days from Edi, please visit http://www.stonetiger.net] Mikey General in New York: Today is a kind of bittersweet day - let's start with the good news first. The good news is that it's the Ethiopian New Year which also coincides with the Jewish New Year and the sad thing is that on this day, Peter Tosh passed away, a reggae icon, and this also is the 2nd Anniversary of the 9-11 where so many people lost their lives needlessly. It's a time for reflection and a time to make that commitment towards developing a better society where peace and love will reign. My condolences to all those who lost family members in this tragic event and my condolences also go out to Peter Tosh's family on this 16th Anniversary of the passing of the great Peter Tosh. We just hope that people will listen to the words of inspiration that he has with us and in the words of one of his famous songs, "Get up, stand up for your rights." May the Almighty Jah Rastafari preserve our souls. Donald Manning of the Abyssinians in Miami: Peter Tosh is a man that me and him use to meet down at Mortimer Planno yard. We use to meet at a place they call Dungle and most holidays and celebrations for His Majesty, we use to come together and celebrate. Me and him use to move together and me start to learn Amharic down at Planno yard with him, me, Harry T and James Samuel but me was more versatile than them with Amharic. We use to meet and play a session a mi house and Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer use to come by and have a Nyabinghi session. And him go to a record shop by Halfway Tree in a plaza and we use to meet together and hail Rastafari all the time. I use to sell Daily News and Gleaner and Peter Tosh use to meet me down at the Gleaner Company and buy a paper. One morning, me and him were down by the Gleaner Company talking and lightening start flashing and Peter said "Dead to the Pope, dead to the Pope" and the Pope dead same day. Peter Tosh always lick them with fire. When Peter Tosh die, I was in Florida watching Pope Paul who was in Miami on the television and when them say that Peter Tosh, international reggae star died, the Pope was on stage and the lightening came same time and he had to leave the stage. His spirit is still with me in some way. Peter Tosh was a good brother. On this day where him dead, we have to just guide him along the way but Peter Tosh was definitely the man with the sword and not afraid to tell you the truth anywhere, anytime. Peter do a lot of good for a lot of people so me know personally that he wasn't that bad man like people say but he stand up too - even when the police beat him for taking his likkle herb, he not back down. He never bow. In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit, may the three spirits come together and bless Peter Tosh and his family. Amen. Well, the 9-11 is the New Year inna Ethiopia and my Ethiopian Orthodox bredren tell me say the 11th of September they carried His Majesty to jail the same time so it is a special day, the 11th of September. And this 11th day of September now is 1995 in Ethiopia so we have to just go on and look and see that with Eastern philosophy, many things are different than with Western philosophy. On 9-11, the anniversary of the tragedy in New York, we hope we don't get this thing back here again in America - me wish the families all the best in their grieving day and that me will always remember them. Admiral Tibet in Jamaica: I would say for me, and not only for me but for the world, today is a memorable day - an anniversary of moments that will not be forgotten, both good and bad. The death of Peter Tosh, 9-11, and also the Ethiopian New Year all on one day -- it's a powerful day. The death of Peter Tosh and the 9-11 are really deaths, tragedies that took place. At the same time, we are rejoicing for the Ethiopian New Year but it's touched by some tragic things that took place this same day. It's a day of rejoicing and also a day of sadness -- sad and joyful memories that collide. Me really didn't check that the 11th was all of these things and I'm only now starting to think on the fullness of it. With Peter Tosh's death, the New Year, and the tragedy in New York, today is really a big day still. I want to send condolences to the families of everyone -- we love everyone, not only one nation and one race - who lost their family in such a tragic way - from the heart. Peter Tosh is a great man who really influenced me in the business and such a tragic way that he lost his life and my condolences go out also to his family but we also have to give praises for the day too - for the New Year and to remember that good people are scarce in this world and we must treasure those that we have in our lives. May the power of the Almighty bless and keep you. Lehbanchuleh in Jamaica: First of all, this is a great event for all Rastafari children throughout the world - it is the coming together of minds that think alike as Rastafari is the foundation of the world. Over the years, we have seen the works that are honorable. Ethiopia awaits great minds to make the change or transition to the great reality of which HIM has spoken. Africa awaits its creators. 9-11 is one of the events that will live in the minds of billions for years to come. It shows the length and depth to which people will go to hurt each other. We who are witnesses to these things must bring about a renaissance of truth and spiritual values that will bring us together as one people. It is therefore each individual's duty to make sure that these events never occur again. Peter Tosh -- a man apart -- a man who stood for justice. In his lifetime, he was a standard bearer; a man who went to the depth of his soul to bring about change for the better through music. He will always, as a servant of the Most High, be remembered as one who did and stood by his words. My heart goes out in mourning and while I understand that he did his work and stood his ground, I, Lehbanchuleh, wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the family of Peter Tosh and also to all the families across the world who have lost people in 9-11. Rastafari guide and strengthen us all on this day and always. Final Words from Jeanette in Miami: My own blessings go also to the families of all who have lost loved ones in the 9-11 tragedy, to the Tosh family, and to those around the world who also feel these losses. I hope that this little attempt to bring some words of comfort to all of you from these conscious artists on this most auspicious of days was welcomed. Blessings to you all.
