[2]------------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------------- >From Clinton Fearon (#372) Subject: Review: Clinton Fearon @ the Bear Tooth Theatrepub, Anchorage, Alaska Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 18:53:39 -0700 From: Fearon/Kennedy Reggae group moves crowd BEAR TOOTH: Clinton Fearon and band played for three hours. By TIEHESHA TAYLOR Daily News music reviewer (Published: September 16, 2003) If you didn't see reggae artists Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown Band at the Bear Tooth Theatrepub Saturday night, you missed something great. The show was scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. I arrived 45 minutes early and saw a line outside the building with all ages and races of people. Some of those waiting said they'd seen Fearon and the band perform in the Lower 48 or on one of the two previous nights in Homer and enjoyed the show so much that they wouldn't dare miss an opportunity to hear them again. When the sound check was done and with a lobby full of antsy patrons, we were finally allowed in to take our seats and prepare. The great thing about the Bear Tooth is the theater-type seats with tables, so you can put your food and drinks down and sit comfortably. It allows for a relaxed atmosphere. It was a 21-and-older event, which made the mood of everyone even better. It's nice to be able to sit, have a drink and listen to great music at the same time. Did I say sit? There wasn't a lot of that going on. Most people went straight to the dance floor, drinks in hand. They didn't want to miss the chance to get right up front. I guess you might say total excitement was the vibe. At about 11:30, the introduction was made by Prince Albert. One by one, the band appeared: Barbara Kennedy on keyboard, bass guitarist Jeff DeMelle, drummer David "Davee C" Carpenter, trombone player Johnathan Cuenca and saxophonist Izaak Mills. And then the man himself appeared. Dressed mostly in red, Fearon came onstage with a huge smile on his face. You could tell he was fired up. The man who has been performing professionally for about 33 years and who used to be part of The Gladiators wasted no time in giving us what we came for. Fearon sprang right into action, singing and dancing, playing different instruments. He played little gadgets that I'm not even sure there are actual names for. He had fun; now that's something you don't always see. Fearon writes his own songs. His "Feel the Spirit" makes you remember what the world is today and how we as a people should unite. He sang of unity, pain and heartache, and of the troubled world and war through songs from his new album, "What a System." He reminded us through song that we have so much to look forward to and should remember what is really important today. It was moving, it was touching, and it was great music. About two hours into the show, after two dozen songs and a 15-minute intermission, it finally got hot enough for Fearon to take off his shirt -- revealing a tank top displaying the famous Jamaican colors of yellow, red and green -- and dance with his saxophonist. Although Mills didn't have much rhythm, he was definitely having fun, and the crowd loved him. The main show finally came to an end around 2 a.m. Of course, there had to be an encore -- you can't let a man like Fearon leave the stage without one last taste. He did one better, giving the crowd three more songs for a total of about 30. Man, was it spectacular. The crowd was excited. The dancing of young and old together -- is that common for Alaska? After the show, Fearon explained that "music makes people feel certain ways and touches their soul.'' He said he loves harmonies and he loves to try different things. So if you haven't heard Clinton Fearon and the Boogie Brown Band, you are missing something good. Go pick up the first released album, "Disturb the Devil,'' the second, "Mystic Whisper,'' and the new one. I dare you. Reviewer Tiehesha Taylor can be reached at twilson@adn.com. We have made arrangements so that you can easily donate through paypal into a trust account for the Home at http://www.stonetigerentertainmentgroup.com/charities.html. It's sad as these children don't have loving parents to miss them but Edi feels that this is the best way to make some sense of Rory's passing -- by helping other children. * Do please also remember that a portion of the proceeds from Lehbanchuleh's "Claim the Joy" also goes to the Maxfield Park Children's Home and a portion of Mikey General's "Exalt Jah" goes to the Jamaica National Children's Home in Mona. * Short on cash? And a Note from Lehbanchuleh Greetings in the name of HIM Haile Selassie I the First. I'm just coming back from Jamaica and as usual, the Jamaican climate and ever-present greenery was inspiring. It was wonderful to be able to visit the springs and to drink the natural water flowing from the rock. Being in the country, I also went to the beach to see and feel the energies that are naturally present. I was in the hills for some time gathering strength to be able to pass on the message of inspiration. I spent many nights in meditation under the moon and stars as I read from a number of inspirationally written materials by firelight. I would invite anyone wishing to draw strength from nature and indeed, from Jah, to go to the hills as it is a great replenisher of spiritual strength. I am glad to be back in Miami amongst Brother Edi & the Stone Tiger crew to share the blessings and message of love with you all. Jah guide. Your brother, Lehbanchuleh. The best is yet to come!
