His hardcore fans love his half-baked humor, pointed social commentary and unique take on current events. His long career which began in the mid-70s and his many albums, have garnered him accolades worldwide as an international phenomenon quite apart from the rest of the Reggae world. His sound so unlike any other, is equal parts singing, DJing and disconcerting Oriental-esque weirdness which keeps Reggae lovers raving about this rodent. SOL HORIZON, an up-and-coming Sonoma County band, captivates audiences with their dynamic and irresistible performances of original, Reggae-influenced dance music, socially conscious lyrics and infectious rhythms. They offer an unforgettable musical experience. Sing unto God, sing praises to his name: Extol him that rideth upon the heaven by his name JAH, and rejoice before him. In so doing he has become one of the most important voices in international music. In 1985, inspired by the likes of Peter Tosh, Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff, Lucky gave up a successful career as a traditional Zulu Mbaqanga singer to pursue his Rastafarian beliefs and launch a career as a reggae artist. The album ³Rasta Never Die: recorded against the wishes of his record company was banned and consequently met with little success, but he rushed back into the studio and created ³Think About The Children² almost in secrecy. It was an immediate success eventually going gold. Lucky¹s career as a reggae artist took root. Despite the banning of some songs by the South African government then still at the height of apartheid, his next album ³Slave² went gold. Subsequent recordings, ³Together As One,² ³Prisoner,² ³House of Exile² ³Captured Live,² and others were trenchant works filled with lyrics dealing with social issues and spiritual inspiration in the best tradition of Lucky¹s heroes, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh. Meanwhile, Lucky embarked on the most relentless international touring schedule becoming popular in Europe, America, the Caribbean and most notably throughout Africa where he became the best selling artist of the 80s and 90s. Traditionally, reggae has been a genre entrenched in social commentary. It¹s fitting that Lucky, possibly the most popular and talented roots reggae artist, would hail from South Africa, a country now undergoing major democratic reform after more than 50 years of the racially divisive apartheid system. Dube has chronicled the struggles, hopes and issues of South Africa and the world at large through his music, keeping the fight for freedom in the minds and hearts of people all over the world. Lucky added to his stunning musical legacy in 2000 with ³The Way It Is² (Shanachie), ³Soul Taker² (Shanachie/US) released June 2002, and the latest in 2003 ³The Other Side,² released on GMR in Africa and Heartbeat/Rounder in the U.S. and Europe. They have the unique ability to catch the hearts and attention of their audience and hold on to it. It proves that the message must be in their music, spreading the Love that only Inner Visions are capable of. Proving without a doubt that they are the Caribbean Masters of Reggae! INNER VISIONS THE BIOGRAPHY St. John, a quaint little island in the Northeastern Caribbean, is home to the US. Virgin Islands best kept secret. Inner Visions, as they are called, has been in existence for over 20 years. Fighting hard to overcome a dominant calypso music infested environment was not easy. Phillip Pickering and Paul Samms are the only two remaining members of "Prophecy," (Inner Visions' previous name). Later Alvin Pickering, who would make the trio complete, would join them. Today however, their music has transcended all barriers, and the respect they craved for so long has finally surfaced. Reggae by any stretch of the imagination is not easy to master, but Inner Visions has managed to learn and to maintain its authenticity and criteria while taking the music to a different level. Good song writing and strong vocals has always been their greatest asset. Much better live than with individual track recordings, this group, when given an audience, comes alive. Always ready to do benefits for worthwhile causes, Inner Visions has always been in the foreground in a fundraising capacity. Their motto is "love one another now." And to Keep it all in the family, the fans will be thrilled to know that there are two additional Pickering that will certainly sweeten up their sound, Aswad and Akiba on Drums and Bass, these two fine young men have been receiving more praise as they are unbelievable! Hey! They are Grasshoppers! offspring, we should have known, the talent was heir apparent! Don't miss this show as Inner Visions come to hurt you gently, with the sweet sounds of Reggae! 2003 not only does the Love one another CD along with Shala la continue to dominate international airwaves, yes I do mean International check out the article in the European magazine of Djembre, they have presently hit us with their much anticipated new release titled " Street Corner Musicians." Somehow his music, though ancient and traditional styles and rhythms speaks to a modern era. Nasio is considered a ‘Buffiando’ in West Indian terms; this is a positive term used to describe our biracial families of Native Carib or Arawak Aborigines and African descendants who came to the shores of Dominica, the Caribbean and South America as slaves. Nasio sprang out from these same shores holding his own, incorporating his own roots style, reflecting his experience as a Rastafarian in a different island, besides Jamaica. This Wise man comes to us from the ashes, bones and chains of the Ancestors, as he proclaimed in his song “African Spirits” on his most recent album “Living in the Positive.” He claimed the “Spirit is One”, Bob, Marcus, Selassie I and all the other prophets living or in the past manifest themselves in the conscious ones. So it is needless to spend ones time making comparisons. He sees Bob Marley as such a great shoe for anyone to fill that he rather concentrate on his own part on representing the Rastafari ideology in reggae music as Bob and the other predecessors did before him. He views reggae music as the vehicle and the opportunity for the Rastaman to express his point of view to the world. He categorized it as King’s music, the revolutionary message for change. Revolution defined as a shift in the paradigm, a change in how we view and respond to issues affecting all people of the Earth. In other words, we are truly our brother’s keeper; we are Stewards of the Earth. Rastafari must be the medium to bring about that change in the masses. The Rastaman must serve as the spiritual leader to stimulate or incite the change. As he alluded to in his song “Rise Up”, when he said, “and the people rebel; Rastafari will lead.” Nasio’s cd, “Living In the Positive” is revelation from the voice of prophecy; this is what Nasio’s music reflects for me, ever since I was first introduced to him through his cd, “Revolution” in 1999. Title tracks like “Truth will reveal” and “Turn your hate around,” resonate in my mind every time conscious reggae music is categorized for a new reggae buyer. Now we have new music from the same ‘messenjah’ in his most recent cd “Living in the Positive,” which he began recording in 2001 and debuted in 2003. The music composition is meticulous, and the quality of the work shines through when you pay heed to the lyrical content which is made simple for you in the liner notes. The lyrics breathe with the music’s big horns and brass sections, which are punctuated with Niyabinghi heartbeats and one-drop, drum rhythms. Songs like the title song, “Living in the Positive,” “Black and Comely,” “Ithiopia,” “Where we belong,” and “African Spirit” will touch your soul if you have any affinity to Rastafari and consciousness. Then he switches style on the last track, which is call “Rise Up.” The genre for this last track is a punchier up- tempo rock and roll funky blues, off the Marcus Garvey Universal Negro theme, “Rise Up you mighty race you can accomplish what you will.” Except, Nasio Fontaine says, “Wise Up people wise up don’t let them fool you no more.” This song also has beautiful choral harmony vocals and Rap chants echoing,” You can accomplish what you will” and “Liberation is a must.” “Rise Up” really reflects Nasio’s musical versatility, espousing a serious message such as Garvey’s, but with a rock and roll edge. The bridge of the song has a Peter Gabriel, world beat flavoring. There is no doubt in my mind that this song has great crossover appeal to promote the Rastafarian message to a new audience world over. When asked if he grew up in the Catholic Church, he replied without hesitation that he grew up in the ghetto. In terms of making a comparison between Christianity and Rastafari, Nasio explained that he is not here to cast off anything. He said he is living in the bounds of reality and not the bounds of Religion, which creates division. His creation in Rastafari begins from the wombs of his mother. His parents have both pasts on into the spiritual realms recently and Nasio experienced some revealing lessons about ‘wolves in sheep clothing’ and ‘back-biters’ that helped him to move on to the stage he is today. Much of this controversy was encapsulated in his song entitled, “Dangerous” when Nasio warned the massive not to put their trust in man, he exclaimed it is only God we trust. Controlling his musical estate is the result of this experience and his on going mission, so that his music survives him in years to come. He said he also learned his lesson from his predecessors in the business that was exploited for their music. His music company, Attrose Music, is named after half of his mother’s name and half his father’s name. He wants to build everything from scratch so as to control the economical power and increase the responsibility to the reggae industry and Rastafari Diaspora. His music label, “Higher Love Music” is another subsidiary own and controlled by Nasio. He works tenaciously at his music and business. For example, he was mastering “Living in the Positive” the same day the planes hit the World Trade Center and being in New York he had to survive all the combustion of dirt, ashes and rubbles in the atmosphere. But he was still inspired more to complete his project. Nasio is absolutely against Wars. He is concerned about the pre-occupation of War and political conflicts throughout the world and asked me to reiterate to the massive, “War is not the solution, we need to practice universal love and tolerance.” He emphasized, “as for the Rastaman, we love peace, we love equal rights and justice.” Nasio’s speech resonated with so much conviction as he lamented, “it is an interesting time because the oppress is now getting wise.” Love and overstanding is Nasio’s hopes for the future and the key to this revolution. This cd was produced on his own label, Higher Love Music, which has been in existence since 2002. So the massive can see constant progress in the right direction, from the writing of the songs to the final production and distribution on his own record label, Nasio has everything under his belt. This is one “Buffalo Soldier” who has demonstrated what it really means to struggle from the heart of the Caribbean to triumph in America and the world abroad. He plans to embark on an International tour to Europe, Japan, and South Africa next year. In the meantime go out grab your copy of “Living in the Positive” and check the Rastafari commitment and convictions of this quiet warrior. Bless Up Nasio, may Jah guide and protect you so his children could continue to be inspired by your works to keep on “Living in the Positive.” Go Deh: www.jahbreeze.com / www.Nasioreggae.com *********************************************************************** In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty Forward the Reggae Vibe...Every Time !
