Have a stack of membership renewals to go through today and tomorrow, and I will let anyone whose renewal arrived during my absence know that it has arrived at this end as soon as I have processed it. Same for new memberships. Will be sending out August renewal notices in the next week or so. And also updating my drop list for anyone whose membership is way overdue (my least favorite job!), so if you are overdue, be sure to send in your membership asap. Postings for Wha Gwaan in RAW can now be sent directly to me once again at tap@kuentos.guam.net I was able to access my email accounts a few times during my travels and think I got all posts out that were sent to me while I was on the road. Some referred to events that had already taken place so those did NOT get included in WGIR. Remember that if you send me a post that includes graphics, photos or music, I will send that post back to you and request that you resend only the text part. I am happy to report that the Board is close to having a complete set of by-laws ready for approval. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone a couple days ago, and we have a few points to clarify, but I am confident that we should have a working set of by-laws ready to present to the massive soon come. North Eastern USA Chapter B-day Date: Sat, 31 Jul 2004 21:36:50 -0700 (PDT) Jerrydread just reminded me it's been one year this month that we went online with our yahoo club for the Northeastern USA mini RAW chapter. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/RAWnorthEastUSA/ What have we accomplished in this 365 days??? well we now have 63 members!(some RAW some not) We have had alot of great input on NYC and NJ reggae runnings. Some Northeastern Festival news. Lots of posts on key radio shows in our region. Tons of tourdates that touch down in cities in our area. In other words lots of reggae networking which is a big part of what RAW is about in the 1st place. We had planned, when we created this, to try and meet in a mini-RAW conference and then report back to the international RAW body, but that never seemed to materialize. As a teacher, summer is the best time for this to happen for me, so if anyone would like to meet in Cambridge again perhaps we can set that up maybe around the time of some Boston Area shows, or maybe we could meet in woodstock NY at the annual reggae fest, if thats happening. we'll talk... If you have any interest in reggae in the Northeastern USA, or if you want to know about our radio, Bands, clubs , concerts, press etc.. please join us today. If you have friends who are not R.A.W. members (yet : ) ) and they would like to join us they are welcome. http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/RAWnorthEastUSA/ Looking Forward ever to another reggae filled year living out Papa Pilgrim's vision of "forwarding the reggae vibe everytime". one perfect love, bro ras adam simeon R.A.W.#1530 NOTE from Tom: What Ras Adam is doing in NE USA is exactly like how I envision R.A.W. working on regional levels. Taking a detailed analytic look at the North American continent (to include Canada and Mexico, but not Alaska, Hawaii or Guam), I feel four large regions would work well. There could then be smaller break-downs within those regions. Each large region would need at least one coordinator and a treasurer, and preferably a secretary. I intend to write up a more detailed proposal (wanted to get this done after 2003's R.A.W. conference in Boston, but never found time) as soon as I am able. Anyone who might be interested in this idea should get in touch with me. And maximum RAWspect to Ras Adam for taking the initiative on his own and getting things started in his area. Sure would love to see more do the same! Tom [4] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From Ras Adam (R.A.W. #1530) Subject: The July Issue of Sistren-Ites Rastafari Journal is out! Friday night, July 23, International Night 1 of Red Stripe Reggae Sumfest featured the debut performance of one very talented young female artist, Evette, to a capacity-packed Catherine Hall in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Playing early in the night's lineup of artists which included Sizzla, Kanye West, and Ludacris, Evette gave an electrifying performance that set the standard high for the night's show as her star shined. Evette, pulled loud shouts of approval from the audience as she sang "Feel Like Dancing" from the Eight76 Record release SKASMATIC and "More & More" which is on Barry O'Hare's popular "One Drop" riddim. Backed by Worrell King's SANE Band, the talented young woman knew to engage the crowd by inserting popular reggae standards like "Simmer Down" into the middle of her own, newer material, to establish an instant connection. The beautiful singer who grew up in Jamaica was strongly influenced by the music of such singers as J.C. Lodge, Sharon Forrester, and the legendary Marcia Griffiths. Concert goers often take their time to get to a show because they don't want to sit through unpolished opening acts. Those who were fortunate enough to catch Evette's Sumfest debut made sure that those who came after knew what they missed. Her early set time drew a large contingent of photographers and international press flocking to the stage asking "Who is this artist?!" with genuine excitement. Sumfest simply loved every minute of it. Evette's new single, "Lately," on Eight76 Records has just been released worldwide, and she is featured on several of the label's CD compilations (RUSTIC, SKASMATIC, and RETRORESPEK) and at http://www.eight76records.com/. Her eagerly anticipated debut solo album should be completed and released by the end of the year. She is also one of the acts scheduled to open for the upcoming "Night of Serious Vibes" concert starring Luciano, Half Pint, and Barrington Levy on September 17 at Miami's James L Knight Center. Founded in 2002 by Kenroy "YahBreeze" Archibald and his wife and partner, Myshjua Archibald, Eight76 Records is the official music label of All Arc Enterprises as an outlet for the performing, production, and writing talents at All Arc Productions. The label launched itself into the international marketplace this year with the release of the RUSTIC, SKASMATIC, and upcoming RETRORESPEK albums with a catalog featuring the talents of veterans like Marcia Griffiths, Luciano, Mikey General, Nadine Sutherland, YahBreeze, producer Barry O'Hare, and emerging stars Meeky, Evette, and Fyah Blaze. Check them out at River Ranch Lodge in Tahoe City on Wednesday, August 11 at 9 p.m. Opening for Midnite is Easy Star All Stars performing Pink Floyd9s Dub Side of the Moon. Tickets are $15 in advance and this is a 21 and over venue. Midnite's founders from St. Croix are "Gainde" Ron Benjamin, keyboardist and musical director and his brother, Vaughn Benjamin, lead vocalist and principle songwriter. Together they have created a musical entity that has transformed reggae music and how we think about it. St. Croix, in the US Virgin Islands, is not necessarily American, and not at all Jamaican, but close enough to both coasts that the influences of each land is apparent upon first listen. Midnite does not "try" to be a reggae band, but instead they succeed where many others have not and that is in their originality and their determination to stay true to roots music. It's a very daunting task to find in these days of overdubbing, hip-hop and dancehall remixes into practically every modern reggae song that you hear. Midnite's resilience shines in their music because they have designed their songs to be raw and rootsy.
