Have a stack of membership renewals to go through today and tomorrow, and I will let anyone whose renewal arrived during my absence know that it has arrived at this end as soon as I have processed it. Same for new memberships. Will be sending out August renewal notices in the next week or so. And also updating my drop list for anyone whose membership is way overdue (my least favorite job!), so if you are overdue, be sure to send in your membership asap. Postings for Wha Gwaan in RAW can now be sent directly to me once again at tap@kuentos.guam.net I was able to access my email accounts a few times during my travels and think I got all posts out that were sent to me while I was on the road. Some referred to events that had already taken place so those did NOT get included in WGIR. Remember that if you send me a post that includes graphics, photos or music, I will send that post back to you and request that you resend only the text part. I am happy to report that the Board is close to having a complete set of by-laws ready for approval. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone a couple days ago, and we have a few points to clarify, but I am confident that we should have a working set of by-laws ready to present to the massive soon come. It boasts vocal contributions from roots/blues stalwart Corey Harris, dancehall veteran Frankie Paul, Wailers lead singer Gary 3Nesta2 Pine, revered harmony trio The Meditations, NY pacesetter Dr. Israel, legendary toaster Ranking Joe, and others. Easy Star Allstars who are taking their Easy Star Records release DUB SIDE OF THE MOON on the road to celebrate the album9s success so far and to introduce the unique project to even more ears. The Easy Star All-Stars will be giving rock fans, reggae heads, jam band kids, and other assorted hipsters a chance to experience a totally different take on the definitive rock record of the past two generations The subset of music fans who are both fanatics about Pink Floyd's 3Dark Side of the Moon2 and devotees of dub music is a limited group. But if at first the classic 1973 album and the spacious and spacey sub-genre of reggae seem at odds--the one somewhat grandiose and depressing, the other fun-loving and light--upon closer listening 3Dark Side of the Moon2 proves to share much with dub. Both are thick with sound effects and reverberating echoes. And that common aesthetic is what the Easy Star All-Stars' new tribute album, 3Dub Side of the Moon,2 sets out to explore. The dub tribute takes the task seriously, coinciding with the 30th anniversary of the release of the original and working to recreate what they call "The Wizard of Oz synchronicity" that has kept many Floyd fans up late at night with the DVD player and stereo. This may be sacrilege to some, but by transforming 3Dark Side of the Moon2 into a dub album, the All-Stars inject a little playfulness into the bombast of the original. The rendition of "Time," with Ranking Joe putting in his best U Roy style yips and yowls, as a laid-back resignation to temporal power. The All-Stars make dub-style alterations to the original, adding in bubbling bong sounds and a "Sweet Leaf"-esque coughing in place of the "kaching" of cash registers a the beginning of "Money." And in this context, the lyrics from "Eclipse" ("the lunatic is on the grass") take on a new level of ganja-connotation. Despite the laughs, this disk is likely to please serious fans of both dub and Pink Floyd, a circumscribed but sizeable pool. Opening act Zion Roots hails out of Sacramento and audiences9 love dancing and swaying to their music as they perform all the reggae standards made famous by Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff. Zion Roots was created in the mystic Santa Cruz mountains when two Rasta countrymen from the Caribbean Isle of Dominica, Nicolas Gregoire and Jus Lewis, both musicians, met up in 1999 and began making their own reggae music. Infusing a positive Rasta message of peace and love in a roots reggae style, Zion Roots performs to packed houses at a variety of festivals, clubs, and private events through out Northern California, the San Francisco Bay Area, Santa Cruz, San Jose, and has opened for major reggae artists such as Culture and The Itals. Nicolas Gregoire, on lead vocals and percussion has been singing and song writing since the age of eighteen. He has performed with many reggae bands both in the Caribbean and the United States, and has performed with Zion Roots, which he co-founded in 1999. Jus Lewis, on bass guitar, riddim guitar and vocals has been playing bass and riddim guitar since 1980. Jus played with several bands in the Caribbean, the Razor Band (Dominica), the Natural Roots Band and the Reggae Roots Band (St. Thomas) before his move to the U.S. Tickets are $10 with doors opening at 9 p.m. and show time at 10 p.m. This is a 21 and over venue. Date: Tue, 03 Aug 2004 10:04:32 -0700 Greetings beautiful reggae possee -- Sunday on the Reggae Shack (9pm KTHX 100.1) it's a special tribute to to awesome talents that will be appearing in our area next week. First, and with high respect, it's the great sounds and upful reality vibes of Virgin Islands reggae superstars Midnite, who bring their special brand of deep roots reggae to the River Ranch, on Hiway 89 between Truckee and Tahoe City, Wednesday, Aug. 11. On the Shack, you'll hear selections from the many CD releases Midnite has put out in the last few years, all of them instant classics. Accompanying the Midnite vibes will be some crucial selections from the two CD releases I have from another conscious Carribbean star, David Kirton, the Reggae on the River veteran and soulful vocalist a la Steel Pulse. David will be nicing up the Sparks Cantina on the lucky day (for non-superstitious Rasta lions) of Friday the 13th of Aug. You'll have chances to win free admission into both of those show on the Reggae Shack as well. To the Reno-Sparks locals, be advised that David Kirton is gracing our area for only a $5 dollar cover charge, a special gift to our area. So I expect to see the entire Reno-Sparks-Tahoe possee in effect that night showing respect to this great artist. Don't forget also to head up to Truckee this Saturday the 7th, for the appearance of Steel Pulse, Luciano, Mikey General and others at the Truckee Ampitheater. Gonna be crucial!! Log on to renegade.com for more info on this and a whole heap of other shows coming to the area. And finally, see you at the Blue Lamp this and every Sunday, 4 to 8 pm, for a nice serving of roots reggae...One Love, Too Dread *********************************************************************** In the abundance of water, the fool is thirsty Forward the Reggae Vibe...Every Time !
