This time around they did it in fine style at one of Seattle's premier venues, The Showbox, located across from the famous landmark, Pike Place Market. Jah Breeze promoted the event in conjunction with the Ethiopian World Federation, Yekuno Amlak Local #16, and The People of Color Against Aids Network (POCAAN) to benefit aids education and awareness. This is the second time Midnite is supporting this event. In February 2004, for Bob Marley's birthday they played at an Ethiopian venue call Cafe' Ibex in the Rainier Valley Neighborhood. This time they played in the heart of the Emerald City downtown, a big change in scenery all together. We had three and a half weeks to promote the show and felt like we accomplished our task with the promotion team we developed to help organize for the event. The Coronation Nyabinghi Drummers opened the show with the chanting of the Ethiopian National Anthem. The Coronation drummers consist of myself (Jah Breeze) hailing from Guyana, Ras Untunga from St. Kitts and Ras Danny I from Jamaica. Next in order in this 'Roots Splash' line up was Sabbattical Ahdah who hails from St. Croix like Midnite. The local band call Puget Sound System backed Sabbattical. As usual the crowd was definitely there for Midnite, the massive understand the role Seattle plays in being the hub for these brothers when they are embarking on their California road tour dates. About 11:30 AM I received the call from Ras Iley, their driver and assistant road manager, letting me know that he would be touching down in my area in about two hours. In the meantime, Preston, their promoter out of New York had already called me with the update that their flight from St. Louis was arriving late. At 5:00 PM the call came in from Sister Kafunja that the Band members had arrived at the hotel and were waiting for their hot meals and other spiritual nourishments, which had been long overdue since they were traveling under restrictive conditions. We tried to accommodate these griots to the best of our ability, which got progressively better as the evening developed. I met the Band at the Hotel and after some reasoning with Ron about the sad state of affairs of pop music, it wasn't long before we turned the TV off and reasoned more heartically about Midnite's role in changing the music scene. He assured me that they plan to continue empowering themselves and their audience in the midst of this commercial exploitation by staying rootical. After talking about some politricks, the elections and the democratic convention we began to talk about my role in the future presentation of Midnite in the Seattle area and how we can mutually benefit each other in this endeavor. One thing that is good in this favor is that they loved the Showbox venue and were impressed with the crisp sound that was produced by the professional sound engineers. Sound check went off without a 'hitch' and we knew that the show was now on the road to success. While Midnite returned to the Hotel to refresh, Sabbattical took this opportunity to do his sound check, backed by the Puget Sound System, the four piece band from Seattle/Bellingham area. The Showbox doors opened at 8:00 PM sharp and the massive started to flock into the venue rapidly. By the time the Coronation Drummers began singing the Ethiopian National Anthem, the massive approached the front of the stage to feel the vibes of the drums and chanting. Immediately, we recognized that they were young youths and not your usual reggae crowd. So it appears that Midnite is starting to attract the younger generation while maintaining their allegiance to the veteran reggae fans. Sabbattical Ahdah had something also to do with these new fans since he was in Seattle a few days before the show doing engagements at a few venues in the area, including performing at the Contour Club the night before the Showbox. Sabbattical and his management team did some preshow advertisement, which helped because his management team is young white youths who are involved with the music business in Seattle. They introduced the Record stores to the event and penetrated their own target market of young white youths, which is different than my target group. This collaborating factor seems to work for the overall success of the show. The Binghi Drummers played to these young white youths who are searching for a philosophical and spiritual answer in these trouble times. So we responded with the philosophy of Rastafari's teachings. The youths seem receptive to this vibration and I can just imagine them explaining the ideology of Rastafari to their conservative parents, like their predecessors during the Bob Marley Era, who are more likely now to be their parents. Who was it that said, "the more things change, the more they remain the same?." The Jah vibration is emulsifying and permeating the theatre, as Sabbattical rolled out with an explosive chant call, "Open Sessame," a song paying homage to his sect of Rastafari known as the Bobo Ashanti. He calls out, Bobo man say, Yeh!!! and the crowd responded with "Yeah!!!" Sabbattical Ahdah energy is so big that it looked like the Showbox was on spiritual fire for righteous purification. The next song he reeled off was, "Godomaway" where he chant out for "Yahweh!" He then urged the crowd to respond to him when he ask them who is the Almighty and they would say, Jah Rastafari in unison. This led up to his next song, "Kings of Kings". Sabbattical seemed very comfortable on stage and he exudes a youthful energy in his sound and power. As a matter of fact the keyboard player who was backing him from Puget Sound System would play a violin to Sabbattical's 'heart of joy' lyrics, creating an interesting metronomic effect, which cooled down the 'fyah' on his lyrics a little bit. If we were running him purely on a dancehall rhythm it would have been wicked. But this show was billed as the "Roots Splash" and we wanted to create a sacred space for Midnite to follow. This worked to the advantage of the entire show because the massive felt like they were involved in the shifting of the energy. Sabbattical kept up the intensity throughout his set, similar to his mentor Capelton. Normally this would be a difficult act for most artists to follow but for Midnite this would be no problem. At 10:30 PM as scheduled, Midnite hit the stage at the Showbox to begin their presentation for the first annual Reggae Roots Splash produced by Jah Breeze, People of Color Against Aids Network and Ethiopian World Federation, Yekuno Amlak Local #16. The Band seemed refreshed and high energy after their late flight. They grooved in slowly as Vaughn calmly electrified the crowd with his cool, collected and balanced mannerisms. Seems like the entire half of the set was dedicated to reverence and meditation. Vaughn graciously belted out such songs as "Truth in Spirit", which exemplifies the Rastafari livity to the max and moved further into various aspects of the ideology when he sang, "Praise Jah" off the Ainshant Maps cd, their newest release. This particular song describes the different branches in Rastafari, including the Bobo Ashanti, Nyabinghi, Twelve Tribe, Orthodox and Coptic. It further stresses the mission of the Rasta and warned them against being 'weak hearts,' saying, "Only weak hearts, Babylon conquer.... 2000 year old stamina, no one can mash up our ancient order," and it cleverly lists the various orders. The Beat Magazine described Midnite's project as "Rastafari history with melodies." On July 29th, Midnite continued this lesson for two and a half hours straight without any breaks. They certainly give the audience and their promoters their money's worth as Vaughn closes out the show with "Who Build Jerusalem ?" Reflecting on this at the Santa Cruz show on August 2nd, I just cannot see this Band fading away anytime soon. After the Seattle show I asked the massive if they felt the healing they came for and they all responded with a big yes. I would like to thank the People of Color Against Aids Network for their support and love, as well as, the Ethiopian World Federation, Yekuno Amlak local #16, Ras Untunga and Ras Danny I; East Bound Sound; Cowrie Ethnic Gifts; Zion Gates Records, Respect Records; Nick, Chris and Dave from Sabbattical Ahdah promotional team; the Showbox team; Backinguplions.com and all my family and friends who supported me in this endeavor to promote the show in three weeks. The powers of the Trinity have prevailed and give I&I our victory again, again and again. "Raspect Alone!!!!All elements of the world, Selassie I humble you...everything must hail the King, whether guilty or innocent" Midnite sound off of Jubilees of Zion. I was really impressed just watching Kaati at work. She is professional, well balanced, keeps a cool head and gets the job done. (I can say that since I asked her a million questions and she never once showed impatience!) I didn't see as much of Robbie but he must work just as efficiently. The show was incredible. The ride out to Truckee is a treat in itself. The amphi-theatre is small and intimate so there is not a bad seat in the house. I had seen Nasio, Luci, Mikey, Dean and Jahmessenjah a few nights before in San Francisco. They seemed relaxed and in great spirits. They had only one day in Jamaica after the Europe leg of the tour and then hopped a plane to California. They were just awesome. Nasio is a force of his own. He is a quiet, reserved, performer who embellishes a Rasta spirit so strong that you just can't help but feel the spiritual energy. The women in his band are also a great asset, including Melissa Barfield who apparently manages the tour. Big ups to Melissa. The show ended with Steel Pulse. I had not seen them in a few years and they are still powerful. David Hines was so nice to talk to and I loved watching and hearing reggae with that UK intensity. This is just a short big up, since I am still in California and at Kinko's on a rented computer. I will post photos on the Consciousparty.com when I get back. Hope everyone has checked out the new website by now. I invite you to join the Lion's Den message board. It has all the latest reggae news and many people working in the reggae music industry. Yow! As we hit the month of August, South Rakkas' RED ALERT riddim has taken the pole-position in New Mexico. TOK's "Let It Shine" is top-a-top, while entries from Capleton (at #3), the Papichulo Crew (at #8),Cecile (at #10) Vybez Cartel (#12), Zumjay (#17) and Bajie Man alongside Ninja Kid (#20) follow to complete its dominance. A superb pice of music again, so big ups to Dennis "Dow Jones" Shaw to keep it at the higher level. Tony Matterhorn's SCOOBAY has finally hit New Mexico in the form of his combo with Stone Love selecta Richie Feelings. Speaking of selectors, Metromedia's Sky Juice also charts with his dance-anthem "Dance Moves" on Annex' SUMMER BOUNCE. Expect plenty more from both riddims in the future and check out our reviews & ratings in the review-section at www.brotherhoodsound.com On the BLACKOUT Vybez Cartel's "K.I.S.S.I.N.G." dropped from #2 to #6 while Sean Paul fell 11 spots (from #5 to #16). Black Shadow's CHING CHONG finally made a dent in the New Mexico dancehalls due to Rehka's excellent "Good To Go", otherwise I'm a bit disappointed with the beat. Good tunes but the beat nuh really mek it. Still no worthy follow-up to the BUZZ (although SURPRISE and CHING CHONG are by no means bad, yet they set an even higher standard with classics as "Gimme The Light"). On the rootical tip, 2 Miles WHY WORRY returns with a vengeance, pushing Natty King's "Dont Bring Your Guns To Town" back up to #7, while veteran Junior Moore (of the Tamlins) represents the title-track. The DOCTORS DARLING also makes a come-back with the same old Degree/Tanya Stephens controversy and a tuff, new contribution from Turbulence. Richie Spice is still holding up the rootsman's torch with his ever-lasting "Earth A Run Red" as well. Of course the COOLIE DANCE remains quite popular, as it continues at # 2 and #4. Bubblin under are tons of hardcore dancehall riddims as COOL FUSION, BLUE STEEL and GRINDIN, while there still seems to be little of exceptional interest on the rootical front, aside from DUB FIRE from the Basque Dub Foundation/Heartical Crew outta France.
