I and many of my good friends have just returned last weekend from the 21st Annual Reggae On The River! I have now gone mildly into that thouroughly and completely post - partum depression syndrome that happens to me every year at this same time when I have to come back to the "real world" after having had such another great experience there! Personally, I always have wished for the last sixteen years that I've attended that ROTR would be the ideal example of the "real world" that other forms of our life existence could be modeled after. Oh, well, who knows? Maybe someday! Being the ROTR veteran that I am, I don't let the minor annoyances I encounter bother me anymore. Even though I took an extra day off work for all the necessary errands and packing the camping equipment in the car, I still managed to end up leaving home later than I planned to on Friday afternoon. The older I get, the longer it seems to take. Unfortunately, I ran into some majorly heavy traffic leaving the Bay Area to the north. I arrived at my campsite nine miles south of the festival at dusk, and needed to at least set up my tent and sleeping bag. I did so, had a quick bite to eat and headed on up to the Benbow shuttle lot. The shuttles were still running, and I didn't have to wait long. The ride was uneventful, but when I got to the festival, "will call" was closed, so I couldn't get my wristband to get inside. I had arrived too late, it was my own fault. I was somewhat bummed, but I hung around for awhile talking to one of the friendly security people, and a few others, and drowned my sorrow with a yummy and cold mocha freeze with whipped cream from a nearby stand just inside the gate. I had seen most of the acts that were playing on Friday night before, and I was told later that they all did a wonderful show, so that was a bit of consolation. I really would have liked to see Bunny Wailer, Ozomatli, and my good friends Soul Majestic who just came out with a new CD again, though. Everyone said later that it had been a great day. So, with that, I got back on to the shuttle and then later drove back to my campsite, listening on the radio to the Psalms singing on the live ROTR broadcast, vexed that the fairly weak signal didn't last long enough through the wooded mountains, fading out to static much too soon. Saturday morning dawned very quietly and early. I managed to quickly cook and eat some salmon patties on my little charcoal grill, and got my things together and headed back to the shuttle. I arrived at the Benbow parking lot and was astounded to see a smaller amount of cars parked in it than in previous years. One of the attendants told me it was because the volunteers were now parking in a different lot. I waited shortly with several other people under an awning that had been erected by the side of the road ( first time for this!), and then got on to the bus. Soon , I was at the festival getting my wristband, and going on in. I arrived during Groundation's set. This Northern California band has '"paid their dues"', releasing five albums and it was nice to hear them play their festival debut. Thicker Than Thieves were next, and their punkish sound was a bit of a change. Wisdom and Radioactive followed, with a sound to me that was primarily hip-hop, rather than reggae. Detour Posse, the versatile band that hails from San Diego, performed a personal set and then went on to back Warrior King and Mr. Vegas, both dancehall artists. Mr. Vegas even had dancing girls onstage. This year's festival seemed to have quite an emphasis on dancehall stylee with lots of dancing ladies undulating provacatively in fringy outfits. I myself am more of a roots purist, so that wasn't really my personal thing to watch or listen to. Some enjoyed it, and others did not, from the comments that I've heard and seen since the show. Oh well. Guess you can't please everyone. Next came the fabulous Morgan Heritage, which WAS more to my taste! These brothahs and sistahs (literally!) are always a joy for me because they have the most wonderful harmonies! They are a tight unit, that have been performing together since they were children. Smooth voiced reggae legend Barrington Levy presently took the stage. This man has worked with some of the most influential artists in the business, and he still delivers an awesome performance. More dancehall followed with the infamous Bounty Killer. He did a concise set, with basically no commentary in between songs. Capleton's mixture of pattering dancehall and rap closed the show, and I left before it was over to make sure that I caught the shuttle. Sunday morning was soft and gentle again, but I found myself somewhat tired upon awakening. I made a breakfast on the grill of yummy steak and corn, and then had to go down to Standish Hickey to get some gasoline. I arrived during the end of Bayanga's salsa infused set. I was sorry to have previously missed Abdel Wright, but he kindly provided us with a CD to listen to for later in the press tent. This young man is going to go places! He has already seriously impressed U2's Bono ,and his mentor was Johnny Cash. I remember Humboldt's own I-Deals from when Rod was still with them before his untimely passing, and have several of the early CDs. They play quite often at the featival. Tanya Stephens graced the stage next. I have one word for this lady : classy. She was the only woman reggae artist this year at the festival, and she was a breath of feminine fresh air! Yes, she's basically dancehall, but with eclectic stylees thrown in. This was her first visit to Reggae On The River and also to the US. 3Suns came on after, and with their soca infused Trini riddims really got the massive up and skankin'! The crowda people was already in the mood when another fellow countryman Crazy came on with his infectuous brand of the same stylee. It was about at this time that I was sitting down somewhere, taking it easy, and a naggingly familiar looking handsome man sat down beside me, along with a beautiful young woman and a tiny infant in a carrier. I racked my brain, and then it hit me who this person must surely be. I shortly found out for certain that it was none other than Danny Glover, with his daughter and a new grandchild! Danny has been a semi-regular attendee of the festival for the last several years. Keep your eyes open, you never know whom you might meet at Reggae On The River! I decided to go get something to eat and drink. The potstickers and edaname were my favorites over the weekend, and I also had several KMUD iced coffees. I also had an awesome strawberry and blueberry crepe. I wish, though, that the vendors would sell some traditional Jamaican ital foods like rice and peas, curry goat, plantains, callaloo, etc. as some of their offerings. Now was the moment for the artists that I'd been waiting ALL weekend to finally see! The Easy Star Allstars began to play, first some of their original music, and then they slipped easily into the now famous "Dub Side Of The Moon". Their reggae version of the Pink Floyd "Dark Side..." classic was performed in its entirety, and brought down the house with thunderous applause from wildly cheering fans, including me! Old school mellow grooves of the UK based Steel Pulse trio arrived on the scene next. Nice to hear again! Michael Franti and Spearhead closed down the weekend with their hip-hop vibe, that I heard echoing through the valley while I waited in line with other tired, yet happy people for about an hour for the shuttle. Don't know what happened on Sunday night, but they were sure running slowly. One thing I did really note and like that had changed for the very first time this year, Jah Motion limited the amount of people on each bus so that everyone had a seat and didn't have to stand. I think it's much safer and more comfortable way for everyone involved to travel. I broke camp the next morning and headed south on home. Yes, I'll be back next year. Wouldn't want to break my continuous attendance record or anything! Jah Love and blessings to you all, Leigh Crutchfield Irieview Productions R.A.W. # 388 [2] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From DIA-Inc (R.A.W. #1869) Subject: Jamaica's New Artiste MOOR SOUND (D.I.A. This is an invitation for you to check out MOOR SOUND (R.A.W.# 1869) -- one of Jamaica's brightest rising stars. Moor Sound is currently in Negril hanging out with Rob of Negril.com and RealNegril.com. D.I.A. Records and RealNegril.com will host Moor Sound's single release party at the Roots Bamboo Beach Club Wed. Sept. 25. It's going to be HOT. If anyone is in the area please stop by. This artiste from Reach, Portland - Jamaica is a prince who is being accepted and revered by everyone who meets him. As journalist Elena Omauno puts in an article that will be published in the Jamaican Star, "...Moor Sound is clearly a cool reggae artiste with a rock star persona... My purpose is not to force my ideals or religious beliefs on people, says the sing-jay who was born Valentine Patrick Clarke in the District of Reach. But more love can create the passage for more peace is the underlined message..." The single "Moor Sound" is really 100% Jamaican but it has an universal appeal everyone young and old can rock to. This single is currently getting spins/played in the US and other countries like Portugal, Malta and Australia. Another one of his recordings ("Fatal Attraction") in the Surf-rock category on SoundClick.com has made top 40. That is remarkable for a reggae artiste. Check this super-cool artist out. This is a great and unusual opportunity for just about anyone to end up with their song on an album surrounded by all top music names. The deadline to have your track considered for inclusion on the EP which is September 15th is quickly approaching. Those interested need to send a CD with no more than two Peter Tosh tracks and all contact information. Send your submission to: Extra Track Tosh Tribute Album 3376 Preakness Court Marietta, GA 30062 A long awaited full length album will be released next year and will feature tracks from Eric Clapton, Velvet Revolver (Slash, Matt & Duff of Guns N Roses), and Sean Paul, Luciano, J. Mascis of Dinosaur Jr fame and others. The projects are the result of close to two years of work by long time music veteran, Michael Malott and his Tosh Foundation. The project has faced a number of obstacles including a long running lack of funding, a bogus investor in Canada and a battle with Air Jamaica over two tickets that were to be awarded to one lucky buyer of the projects Put My Faith in Jah fundraiser release. The project alleges that Air Jamaica promised and then failed to provide the two tickets after taking full advantage of the promotional exposure of the project. Project creator, Michael Malott does however note a couple of highlights of the project to date. This including the letter he received from former South Africa President, NELSON MANDELA commending the project and Malotts efforts. The project also received several awards last year. Malotts other charity; Instruments for the Youth has become increasingly popular. With a long list of celebrity artist supporters and major music companies including the likes of C. F. MARTIN GUITARS, SHURE USA, JAZZIZ MAGAZINE, MUSICIANS FRIEND, PEAVEY, and BEHRINGER, the charity just released a jazz compilation CD featuring a major line up of top name jazz artists. This including former Police guitarist, ANDY SUMMERS, Grammy Winning guitarist PAT MARTINO, Jefferson Starship guitarist; CRAIG CHAQUICO, Latin superstar; PONCHO SANCHEZ, former Testament guitarist, ALEX SKOLNICK and his trio, MARK EGAN, ERNIE WATTS, and several others. The charity provides free musical instruments to needy children and conducts celebrity hoisted music clinics for children. The organization is also planning a summer music camp program for underprivileged children which will feature celebrity camp counselors for next fall. Artwork for the albums cover is still being put together for the EP and the project is working to meet their upcoming deadlines. The CD will be available through the projects official website www.ptosh.com and is available for pre-order now at a special discount with free shipping and handling. # # # END # # # FOR FURTHER INFORMATION Media Relations Tosh Foundation PH. The latter two tracks on this release are from that album, while the first, "Tippin," is a remix of one from her 2000 debut The Awakening. Queen Makedah has been compared to a mix between Bob Marley and Sade, and while such lofty comparisons should probably be reserved until she has released more material, the point is clear: she melds a sultry R&B edge with a rootsy reggae foundation. Her smoky voice and crossover appeal remind me quite a bit of Diana King. With reggae being as popular in the USA as it's ever been, it seems there's perhaps never been a better time for such a style to succeed. The single "Lift You Up" is certainly a step in the right direction. This effervescent, life-affirming roots tune has the feel of classic and deserves much exposure. "I Got Mine" is a more laid-back affair with intriguing lyrics that tell the tale of a woman betrayed. "Tippin" is more R&B than reggae and thus won't necessarily win over reggae fans, but the other two tracks make this an intriguing EP that begs for further investigation into Queen Makedah's sound. You can hear and purchase it at cdbaby.com." www.reggae-reviews.com [8] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From Mushiya Felecia STrickland (R.A.W. #1667) Subject: The Reggae Connection Jamaican wize - Introducing Reggae Radio DJ Junor Francis Date: Sun, 15 Aug 2004 15:52:30 EDT It is always with great pleasure and warmth of heart that I make Introduction to another one of my brothers.
