Album: Crucial Reggae From Outside Jamaica Label: Skank Records Release: 2004 Rating: 5 stars "Crucial Reggae From Outside Jamaica" is the second release from Skank Records, following up his re-release of Ossie Dellimore's "Freedom's Journal," and judging by the Professor's impeccable taste one has to hope that more soon come. This disc is intended to showcase the wealth of roots reggae currently rising up from the States and Canada, and some Caribbean hotbeds such as St. Croix, St. Thomas, St. Vincent and Dominica. Those who think Jamaica has the market cornered on modern roots need to listen to this stellar collection of tunes which have all been released previously, but many of which are hard to find. One of these tracks leads off the set- Mongoose's incredible "Clear Night." Danny I's "Soldier" and Bobo Ites' "Heathen Rage" are two massive tunes from the impossible-to-find "Eastbound II" album, and Ankh Watep and Junior Daniel are featured from "Talkin' Roots" and "Weep Not," respectively. Groundation is one of the pre-eminent modern groups from the US and are appropriately featured with "Something More." "Pass It" is one of the many awesome tracks from Bambu Station's "One Day," and Iba is featured with the title track from "Jah Lion." Nasio of course is possibly the greatest solo roots artist of our time, and it's fitting that the Professor has chosen one of the best songs from each of his three albums, particularly the closer to this set, "Riding On." Ossie Dellimore's "Downpressor Man" and Abja's "War" round out a disc that's all killer from start to finish. Plus, Professor Skank has gone the extra mile with a very informative 16 page booklet that includes the lyrics to each track. This has obviously been a labor of love for him, and he's succeeded in compiling a crucial sampling of some of the hottest sounds in today's roots reggae scene. THIS is exactly what Creation Steppin' is attempting to forward to the massive, and Bahilman salutes this album wholeheartedly. (Disclaimer: Skank Productions is an advertiser with Creation Steppin', but this album would've received 5 stars anyway!) Respect to Bahilman. For other reviews, comments, info and to listen to song samples, check out www.skankproductions.com/crucialreggae.htm Keep skankin... YOW! Black Chiney's first riddim the KOPA has raced up our charts, straight to #1, due to the incredibly smooth Baby Cham & Nina Sky combo. The track has serious crossover potential and I would be amazed if we dont get to hear it constantly on all the commercial NM hip-hop/r&b stations very soon. Further KILLER tracks on the KOPA include Capleton's wrathful "Who You Calling Nigger" and Elephant Man's "Father Elephant". The riddim has an uncanny resemblance to Scatta's highly successful COOLIE DANCE and I predict big things for this one. Following closely behind is Dave Kelly's new smasher BAD GAL. A terrific beat that is absolutely irresistable and will have droves of dancehall patrons hittin the dancefloors, Dave Kelly outdid himself again. Baby Cham leads the pack with his "Hood", as well as on a killer combination with upcoming artist Toi. Further entries on the same riddim come from Macka Diamond, Cobra, and Spice & Toi (again). I LOVE the way Dave Kelly keeps breaking out new artists on virtually every project, yet I miss the follow-ups. While Ms.Thing is taking a break from the biz to have her firsy baby, I wonder what, for example, happened to last year's hot new singing sensation J ? How bout some more tunes from him? Next time maybe? Dem Yute Deh's SPANISH FLY riddim dropped a bit out of the picture but is still represented by Kiprich at #10 but with riddims out like sand pon di beach, it is VERY hard to maintain one's position. Don Corleon's TIGHTY TIGHTY is still hot with TOK at #5 and Ele at #15 and a tuff Ward 21 that set off quite a battle with Gentleman over the #20 spot this time. Plenty of roots material for the month of december. I know I have been going off bout how the european roots releases have been far superior over the yard ones this year, and, as if to prove me wrong, all of a sudden I am confronted by a SLEW of massive roots tracks outta Jamaica. 5th Elements' riddim that goes by the same name has been out for a while now, yet just reached our area. The riddim is an absolute KILLER and both Richie Spice's "Marijuana" and Chuck Fender's "I Swear" have been big hits world-wide. They are both HUGE in NM as well, as is a third song on the riddim by Sizzla (also on his new Greensleeves album "Life"). The biggest tune in Jamaica this year HAS to be newcomer I-Wayne's "Cant Satisfy Her". On the re-created FATHER JUNGLE ROCK, I-Wayne sing-jays: "One man cant satisfy her, she need more wood for the fire, sex-price gettin higher, a more money she require!" Very unusual lyrics dealing with prostitution-definitely not your run-of-the-mill kinda thing. Very original and VERY successful! People's Records re-vamped the classic WHEN I FALL IN LOVE and got original veteran vocalist Ken Boothe teamed up with Anthony B and Mr.Vegas. Pure niceness, as is Ele's informer tune "Vampire". Big Yard's STOP THAT TRAIN/RETURN riddim is still kickin around, this time with Voice Mail's fine "Jamaican Jiggas", while everybody else is bubblin under this month. I was VERY happy to see that there was a new release out on Mr.Tipsy Records, one of the labels that was quite popular in the early nineties, when Brotherhood first started out. It's a re-creation of Burning Spear's classic MARCUS GARVEY and both Bunny Rugs and Natty King sound excellent, with further tunes from the likes of Tony Rebel just out. Go so Mr.Tipsy-finally pon both feet again!!! Penthouse Records re-did Dennis Brown's SOME LIKE IT HOT, with Freddy McGregor covering the song well by himself, but the real excitement comes in when dj Assassin jumps on the track together with him, deciding that Jamaica's "Youth Well Cold". As if this weren't enough already, Donovan "Don Corleon" Bennett, usually known for his hi-fever dancechall attacks, has built his first roots riddim entitled DROP LEAF and Germany's Gentleman rides the vibe quite well. There are further killers from Jah Cure, Luciano and a host of others on this, so check it !!! So I think there's nuff new-tune-shopping for y'all to do. It certainly is the right season for it. If you want a taste of many of these tunes, I will be on KUNM radio on December 30th. Check on the dates-page for more info,ok? For next month Don Corleon has his new beat pon the streets already (the MIDDLE EAST), John John released yet another latin-influenced dancehall crasher known as CHICATITA and who knows what else will come to pass? Have a nice holiday season and as always: remember to deck the halls with LOTS of kali !!! Bless: Don Martin.
