"It has really taken hold in Jamaica now." I have just returned from a week in Kingston and let me summarize what's happening. In essence at this stage of our campaign to heal Jamaica with One Love more and more people there are embracing this vision. Several very well-known and well-respected Jamaican "healers" (teachers of love) have added their active efforts to ours, increasing the vision's velocity and growth tremendously. These healers include: Dr. Barry Chevannes (UWI professor, author and recording artist), Colin Leslie (music industry consultant and Bob Marley's former business mgr), Dr. Trevor Munroe (Jamaican senator, UWI professor and author), and Jean Lowrie-Chin (columnist for the Jamaica Observer, poet and businesswoman). They have been holding their own meetings to plan various healing events, in addition to working with us on ours (see below). Also the Governor General Sir Howard Cooke, Robert Russell of Reggae Sumfest, Monsignor Albert, Bobby Stephens, and Tourist Minister Aloun Assamba, continue their ongoing support. The Gathering of the Healers at our early Dec. mtg (LtoR) Martin Schade, Janet & Ernie Smith, Cherry Natural and her son, Amani, Little Natural, Antonnette Haughton, Colin Leslie, Elaine Wint, Frank Lumsden, and (out of picture) Barry Chevannes and Robert Roskind www.rastaheart.com An Open Invitation to the Dancehall Artists All of our invitations to heal the island with One Love are carried on a musical vibration. For the last three decades, Bob Marley and other conscious artists have sung this message deep into the heart and soul of the Jamaican people. It resides there--just below the surface. We simply are calling it forward. One thing we are all planning is to encourage the popular dancehall artists, many who are often known for divisive and/or violent lyrics, to join us in leading their fans back to love. Colin, Barry, Robert Russell and I met with Claudette Kent and with Clyde McKenzie, the managers of two of the biggest artists, Capelton and Beenie Man, respectively. Both artists have agreed to publicly join us in our message of One Love, non-violence and restoring respect for women. Both responded to our invitation to join us as healers that was printed in the Jamaica Gleaner Newspaper (see below). Then I met with Dr. Glenda Simms, executive director of the Bureau of Women's Affairs, and a women's rights leader on the island, and asked if she would join with these artists on a media tour. All three will be addressing the media after the first of the year. Seated: Colin Leslie and Ras Bas (Basil Walters) at Rita Marley's Press Conference www.rastaheart.com One Love Concerts at Colleges & Schools Robert Russell suggested we produce "One Love Public Service Announcements" featuring well-known Jamaicans, especially recording artists, speaking on love, non-violence, and restoring respect for women. These will run all year. This is underway thru Barry Chevannes, Colin Leslie and Jean Lowrie-Chin, with the first ones being shot backstage at Sting (not to be confused with the performer Sting, this is Jamaica's largest dancehall event). Also, Abijah, Martin Schade and I met with Pat Ramsay, the director for the Centre for the Arts at the University of Technology in Kingston. We will do a One Love Concert at Utech (and hopefully also at several other colleges and schools) in January to get the college students to join us in healing the nation. Given that most social movements draw their energy from the young, especially the college students, we felt their participation was essential. We also invited all Jamaicans to join us in our "Letter to the Editor" in both the Gleaner and Observer (see below). We also hope to host a symposium, called "One Love:The Music, the Media and the Message," for the "selectas," the deejays that select what music is played on the radio. Utech Outdoor Concert Area www.rastaheart.com Bob's 60th Birthday--A "Violence-Free Day" Directly after the first, in the weeks leading up to Bob Marley's 60th birthday (Feb. 6), we will be launching a media campaign to invite all Jamaicans to join us in honoring Bob by making his 60th a "violence-free day." This includes not only physical violence but verbal, mental and emotional violence as well. As we have done for the last two years, we will be organizing a major free concert that day in Kingston featuring conscious artists and speakers. Like last year, this concert will be carried by many of the island's TV and radio stations. Rita Marley is also organizing a major birthday concert called "Africa Unite" in Ethiopia, featuring many of Bob's childrens and other conscious artists. It may be carried on the Internet and cable. For more info on that concert, go to their website at: www.bobmarleyfoundation.org. Drummers at Rita Marley's "Africa Unite" Press Conference www.rastaheart.com Letter to the Editor: An Invitation to The Dancehall Artists Published in Jamaica Gleaner, Saturday, December 11, 2004 THE EDITOR, Sir: AS PART of our continuous effort to encourage Jamaica to claim it's destiny to teach One Love to the world, we would like to make an open invitation to the recording artistes of the island, especially the popular dancehall artistes. We have taken this invitation to your schools, to the general public, to your political and business leaders, even into your prisons. Now we bring this invitation to you, some of the island's most popular artistes. However, you are not just entertainers but leaders as well, especially for the youths. And like all national leaders, it is you that can have the greatest impact on the direction -- and destiny -- of the island. In tribal cultures, from Africa to Native America, there were two types of leaders. There were the chiefs who administered to the daily needs of the tribes and there were the "elders" (we call them "healers") who provided the spiritual wisdom. These elders, who could be any age, were "spiritually old" enough to know that peace, love and cooperation were the Creator's will for the people. Today, we are inviting you to stand with us as elders, as healers. Everyone of us is potentially a healer. We need only to claim our God-given position as such. Few people in Jamaica can so greatly impact the behaviour of so many, especially the youths, as you. No one has a greater ability to heal Jamaica, to reduce its violence and crime, than you. You are the "pied pipers" of a generation. The youths follow you. You can lead them astray or you can lead them home. Join us, our brothers and sisters, and lead them back home to Jah, God, to One Love. Use your immense talents for the purpose God has given them to you -- to lead His children back to Him. TREAT WOMEN RESPECTFULLY And join us in restoring the respect to the women of the world by encouraging the men to treat them respectfully and encouraging the women to remember that they deserve this respect. The elders of the most spiritual Native American tribe, the Hopis, taught that the devaluing of the female would lead to the devaluing of all things good and decent. Leon Shenandoah, the spiritual leader of the Iroquois Nation who died in 1996, told his leaders "...never forget to ask the Creator for help. The Creator will guide our thoughts and strengthen us as we work to be faithful to our sacred trust and restore harmony among all people. In our ways, spiritual consciousness is the highest form of politics." Use your positions as leaders to expand the consciousness of your people. It is the highest form of leadership. We are, etc., JULIA, ALICIA & ROBERT ROSKIND Abijah at at our One Love Concert in an inner-city elementary school www.rastaheart.com Letter to the Editor: Ja's "One Love," A Gift to the World Published in Jamaica Gleaner, Friday, November 19, 2004 THE EDITOR, Sir: AS THE debate, both in Jamaica and abroad, swirls about the effect of some of your dancehall music, I would like to encourage Jamaicans everywhere not to define themselves by this latest public perception. This music does represent one element of your national consciousness but a minor one, just as 'gangsta rap' represents only a splinter of the American heart and soul. If a society is to define itself by the acts of a few let it be the acts of the best of its citizens. Jamaica must define itself by its 50+ well-known conscious artistes who have put out a global message of 'One Love' for over three decades. We have seen the effects of your message firsthand. Our family has organised and sponsored over 50 'Healing of the Nation Concerts' islandwide, mostly in your schools as well as public concerts on Bob Marley's birthday. These concerts, featuring such conscious artistes as Abijah, Ernie Smith, Luciano, Mackie Conscious, Prezident Brown, Warrior King, Junior Reid, Cherry Natural, Bushman, Keteis and I'ngel Chanta, encourage the audience to teach 'One Love' in their lives. The response is always enthusiastic. CONSCIOUS MESSAGE Any conscious message delivered through the music of talented artistes goes deep into the heart. In this same vein, Jamaica must stop defining itself by the few gunmen, thieves, drug dons and corrupt politicians. It must stop defining itself by its IMF debt, per capita income, and number of potholes. Jamaica must begin to define itself by its over two million hardworking people who toil every day against difficult conditions to live a righteous and an honest life. Jamaica must define itself by its global impact which far exceeds what might be expected, given your size and financial constraints. Your musical talent is unrivalled in the world. Your coffee is considered the best; your beaches and land some of the most beautiful. Your accent, dialogue and 'culture' are copied by musicians, advertisers, and media personalities worldwide. The progressive concepts of your philosophers like Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey, Miss Lou, Barry Chevannes, Rex Nettleford, Luciano, Burning Spear, and many others are studied and respected through their books, words and lyrics. Just the word 'Jamaica' is magical to many. However, more than all this, it is your love that has made the greatest impact. Everywhere your people are known for their love. Through visits to your island and listening to your conscious music, this love has gone out as a wave of healing to every corner of the planet. Jamaica's message of 'One Love' is a gift to the world and because of this your National Pledge, "to advance the welfare of the whole human race," is not a future goal but a present reality. Keep that drumbeat going. Play your conscious music on your radio and TV stations. Support your conscious artistes at your clubs, concerts and festivals. Let your young be infused with their messages of love, peace and justice. Give thanks. Espero que bien, muy bien siempre. Yo si que ha estado muy ocupado este aqo en tu trabajo. Yo tambiin. Yo trabajo en una planta (Molino de Trigo/Milling Wheat plant, which produces fluor for bakery and others food) I have been working very hard and most of the time in the milling plant. He conocido a muchos artistas allm por primera vez (y fuera de mi pams) como Capleton, Steel Pulse, Junior Kelly, Culture, Sly & Robbie, Luciano, LKJ, Alpha Blondy, Julian Marley, Abyssinians, Bunny Rugs, and many more. Esta ha sido una gran experiencia y me acordi mucho de usted cuando reciin entri a RAW back in 1999, (THANKS FOR YOUR VALUABLE ENCOURAGEMENT) Also i met there to Pier Tosi, (former italian RAW Member) and have the chance to introduce myself and the band to them. It was amazing....Give thanks a lot to JAH !!! Me gustarma enviarte material promocional de ALERTA so, you can enjoy the new & fresh colombian roots reggae sound and, of course to be played in your reggae show. As always, i want to say big thanks for your great friendship and valuable support. I hope we can meet some day and be able to express personally my good apreciation. Tom, espero que este aqo las cosas sigan mejorando. Algunos empresarios han tramdo a Colombia a tres artistas jamaiquinos este 2004. Ellos son: Shaggy, Sean Paul y The Skatalites, you can check it at the site for more info. Also a great advance for us here has been the launching of our Festival Reggae Colombia in Bogota. This is our vital national project in which myself has been involved along with others friends. This event has been done with our own expenses and hope to receive some inputs and support from foreign bands and promoters to help us here to keep growing this event and looking for give more exposure to these bands. Also you can check it at the website. Please share the same vibes with the entire RAW Family, and hope very soon to be able to travel to the USA, where i have many friends (thanks to R.A.W.), like Eric Jones, Mike Pawka, Anna Fisher, Zema, etc, etc, etc. I have noticed some members getting out from RAW (I don4t know why?) if RAW is one of the best reggae keys for everybody. I like too much our organization, but still thinking we must get more mutual collaboration between us in order to get more natural balance. You know our economical limits here don4t let me do more reggae acts or related. Hopefully this year i still on air and preparing for sending back playlist and reviews for those artists and bands which have been recently in touch with us here. Hope also to get more in contact with you, as this year 2004 we were little apart mainly because of work in both sides. Again thanks for your time and hope you have Feliz Navidad y Prospero aqo nuevo.
