Sometimes this is difficult, because the gay-bashing lyrics seem to just sneak in there. I have shut off songs in the middle, while on air, to keep my pledge that Reggae Music is strictly conscious, uplifting, spiritual and can change the world for the POSITIVE, and does not deny equal rights and justice to anyone, any time, anywhere. So, when I came upon this article in Amnesty International's Summer 2004 issue of their magazine "Amnesty NOW" I had to share it with you all. Feedback is welcome. Let's talk about this. I think it's important. Do you? Happy Summer and Peace, Love and UNITY to you all. DJ Sister Yasmin Roots Revelation, KMFB-FM, Mendocino, CA Crucial Dance Riddims Sound System -------------------------------------- From AMNESTY NOW, SUMMER 2004 ISSUE: JAMAICA: Gay-Bashing Institutionalized Threats of murder to a driving dancehall beat form the soundtrack to daily life for many lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Jamaicans. Some of the island's most popular recording artists routinely pepper their club anthems and radio hits with exhortations to shoot, burn, rape, stone and drown gay men and women. Homophobic dancehall music reinforces the anti-gay discrimination entrenched in Jamaica's legal system and flies in the face of reggae's historically anti-establishment, one-love ethos. Beenie Man proclaims in one song, "I'm dreaming of a new Jamaica, come to execute all the gays." "These incitements to violence go unchallenged by government and the legal establishment," said Mark Clifford, director of Jamaica Forum for Lesbians, All Sexuals, and Gays (www.iflag.org). "In fact both the main political parties in Jamaica have used songs that incite violence against gay people in their political campaigns." Scholars trace the violent homophobia that permeates Jamaican society to the fundamentalist Christianity introduced by British colonials. Now, more than a century and a half after emancipation, institutionalized discrimination is still threatening the lives of LGBT Jamaicans. "Jamaica still retains an old colonial law against buggery [sodomy]," Clifford added.. Although seldom enforced, he said, the law "perpetuates the misconception that homosexualtiy itself is illegal, further justifying in people's minds discrimination and violence toward gay men and lesbians." Amnesty International reports that authorities often deny protection to LGBT people, who have been assaulted, raped, and even killed because of their sexuality. Police have failed to investigate homophobic hate crimes, and in many cases they have tortured LGBT crime victims seeking assistance. Advocates estimate that more than 40 deaths from homophobic hate crimes have occurred since 1980, leading numerous LGBT Jamaicans to seek asylum in the U.S. and U.K. each year. ACT: Write asking Jamaica's prime minister for: repeal of legislation criminalzing same-sex conduct; legal reform to protect LGBTs from violence and discrimination; a statement that violence against LGBT people will not be tolerated. Appeals to: The Right Honourable P.J. Patterson/Prime Minister of Jamaica/Office of the Prime Minister/Jamaica House/1 Devon House/Kingston 6/Jamaica. $.80 postage http://amnestyusa.org/action/jamaica [4] !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >From: "Easy Star Records" (R.A.W. #) Subject: Dub Side Tour Dates Update Date: Thursday, July 15, 2004 6:51 PM EASY STAR NEWSLETTER http://www.easystar.com Greetings Easy Star Massive, Last we spoke, the Easy Star All-Stars were off to play some dates in the mid-Atlantic region. Those shows went fantastically and the whole band is psyched to play upcoming shows in the UK and on the West Coast. Please check out the tour dates below and come out to support the group (send them on to anyone you know who lives near those towns). For all club dates, the band has been playing an amazing first set featuring a few covers and originals from almost everyone in the group. Then the second set is Dub Side of the Moon in its entirety. Our West Coast outing is being sponsored by Vaporbrothers, maker of the Vaporbrothers Vaporizer. These guys are great and their Vaporizer is one of the most amazing products out there. We will be giving away Vaporbrothers goods at select dates on the tour. In the meantime, you can check out www.vaporbrothers.com for more info on the Vaporbrothers Vaporizer. We will also have a new girls' shirt available soon. In the meantime, consider picking up the blue cap sleeve or regular babydoll tee from our webstore, before they disappear forever. We will also not be printing anymore Dub Side of the Moon color tees, so if you've been thinking about getting one, now's the time to do it. You can still buy them in a special deal with a Dub Side CD and a sticker. Oh yeah, our message board is back and working at the site, after a brief hiatus. Please add your words and become a part of the vibes there. We look forward to seeing all of you on the Dub Side out on the road! This show is a promotional to start a Reggae night with Jahlion / Deepa Reality II being the weekly band until others rotate in. The turn out is what will sell this, if enough people come she will make it weekly and either keep Monday or switch to Wednesday. Ive never been there before but word is that they serve great food such as baked fish, broiled fish steaks, tacos, nightly dinner specials etc. There will be a Jamaican rum and red stripe beer special on Monday night. The current line-up includes Art Seabury on Drums, Father T. (Bongo T) on percussion, Ed Turner on keys, Thomas Morris on guitar, Donna Wolfe on harmony and Emanuel (Rico) on lead vocals. I havent heard this particular line-up yet but from my experience of hearing each of these players before, I know theyll sound great. This is a chance for the Kansas City reggae community to have a regular weekly live show again, but only if we show up in mass. If just the band members of the local bands that would like to play there would show up, wed have a pretty big group. Help spread the word so we can make this happen.
