He was recognized as a visionary and an emergent African leader and was the world.s oldest and longest ruling monarch when deposed in 1974. He was a true reformer of the inequities of Ethiopian life; he abolished slavery and brought progressive trends of modernization to Ethiopia. Haile Selassie I is seen as a symbol of African struggle, liberation, unity and human rights, and holds a revered place in history, especially with Rastafarians who see him as a representative of Christ in our time and believe him to be the Messiah. Take a break, do The Electric Slide around your desk for the next 4 minutes... This activity is GUARANTEED to boost your energy level! Electric Boogie Song by Bunny Wailer Performed by Marcia Griffith This song is likely the best selling song in Popular Music history!! Bunny Wailer is the fabulously beautiful voice you hear surrounding Bob Marley and The Wailers. Marcia Griffiths was also a member of Bob Marley and The Wailers, as a member of the I -Threes a backing vocal trio that toured exclusively for many years of Bob Marley's legacy. Along with Marcia Griffiths was Bob's wife Rita and Judy Mowatt. she recorded the track with Bunny Wailer in the late 80's. Besides the macarena, DJ's overwhelmingly will tell you they get this song by request. I would love to see Marcia perform this song on the nightly television shows. I honestly feel it's the best party "ice breaker". What I love so much is that it has become a family party song. I am certain Bob Marley would be proud of his two friends. However, I do feel he may also be sorry that the people he loved, cared for and sacrificed so many alternate choices have failed to learn the true lesson he intended to teach others. ONE LOVE It was his yearning to share his messages of peace with the world that made Bob Marley an overnight singing sensation in Popular Music worldwide. Think about this thought for a second, if the Electric Slide is so popular, when are Bunny and Marcia going to make the DVD? I could honestly sell one million copies MYSELF!!!! JUNE 25 & 26, 2004 ========================================== >From the "Heart of Mother Earth" Greetings! We have just returned from the Havasupai Reservation in Supai Village in the Grand Canyon where we held "The Healing of the Nation:Respect is Due Havasupai Tribe Concert." The Havasupai tribe, due to their extreme remoteness, is different from all other Native American tribes. Supai Village is their present and ancestral home. Presently about 700 tribal members live in the village with a few hundred more living in the mesa above, mostly in Peach Springs, AZ. By the Creator's design, Havasu Canyon, the home of Supai Village and the Havasupai, is not only the most beautiful inhabitated place in the U.S., it is also the most remote. It is the only town in the country that you cannot drive to. In fact you cannot even drive close to it. View from Hualapai Hilltop, where the 8 mile path to Supai Village begins www.havasupaitribe.com Supai Village To get to Supai, you must drive three hours from Flagstaff, Arizona and park at the southern rim of the Grand Canyon at Hualapai Hilltop. >From there you have three options to get to the village eight miles further into the canyon. You can walk (5 hours), ride a horse (3 hours) or helicopter (10 minutes). Even the mail and most supplies are delivered by horseback! What can I say--we helicoptered in. It was 115 degrees! The village has a few hundred small, simple frame homes, gardens, orchards, streams, a small cafe, store, lodge, post office, elementary school, clinic, and tribal office. It's setting is awe-inspiring--with the walls of the Grand Canyon rising on all sides. Aerial view of Supai Village www.havasupaitribe.com The Sacred Waterfalls For thousands of square miles in this area the land is like a moonscape--harsh, uninhabitable and infertile. However, Havasu Canyon is verdant and fertile with gardens, orchards, lawns, irrigation ditches and bold running streams. All of this is due to Havasu Creek, a huge cobalt-blue, ice-cold bold stream that feeds the canyon while creating three magnificent sacred waterfalls. This valley is about as close to Shangri-La as it gets! Havasu Falls www.onelovepress.com The Havasupai Historically The Havasupai Tribe (Havasu 'Baaja--"The People of the Blue Water") have lived in Havasu Canyon and the mesa above since "time long ago." They believe that humanity entered the Earth through the Grand Canyon and that they are "The Guardians of the Grand Canyon-The Heart of Mother Earth." Like their Hopi cousins living a 150 miles to the East, culturally and traditionally the Havasupai have embraced the ideals of peace and harmony, both within their tribe, with their Native American neighbors and with the dominant culture. This is in contrast to many of the other 600 tribes, most of whom placed great status on warriors and war, though always in a limited way. The Havasupai and Hopi, the two most remote Indian tribes and one of the few still living on their ancestral land, have given us an example of two societies that placed peace, harmony and love above all else and have spent thousands of years striving for that ideal. They too have struggled through great hardships in attempting to reach this ideal. Human nature is after all the same everywhere. However, they have designed their societies to bring out the best in people--even though this design has been greatly influenced by the outer world. Julia at Supai Village www.onelovepress.com The Havasupai Today As the accompanying picture shows, the Havasupai live between two worlds--the ancient and the modern. Until the 1970s there was no electricity, plumbing or helicopters. We talked to middle-aged tribal members who grew up in the village when there was almost no money in their society. They hunted, fished, gathered and grew their own food and the little trading post sold a few staples. Barter and trade was the tribe's commerce. As one man told us with joy in his eyes, "Everything was free! There was trade!" Then with melancholy he went on to say, "The elders told us not to change. The taught us everything we needed to know. We should have listened." There is an elementary school in the village but in 8th grade the youths are placed in schools outside, often thousands of miles from their tribal home. The majority of the youths soon return to the tribe, unable to deal with the frantic pace, complexity and racial prejudice on the outside (as many of us are having trouble doing). Because of this, few tribal members have high school diplomas and fewer college degrees. Many do not know how to drive, balance a checkbook or get a job on the outside. Most rely on the tourist-related jobs that are created by several thousand tourists who mostly camp at the tribal campgrounds every summer. Unfortunately, they have adopted the dominant culture's eating habits and, like most Native American tribes, diabetes and obesity are a problem. There are few elderly tribal members. Mail delivered by horseback with helicopter in background www.onelovepress.com The Healing of the Havasupai Nation The US government and business interests have recognized that the Grand Canyon is the greatest remaining natural resource in the continental U.S. and, as always, is prepared to plunder these resources (gold, uranium, water, etc.) with little regard for the environment. The Havasupai, whose reservation stretches for hundreds of thousands of acres along the Canyon, inhibit the government's ability to "harvest" these resources. In the past, they have been referred to as the "Havasupai problem" by the government. Since few in the tribe are well-educated and there are no tribal lawyers, accountants, etc. the tribe is in danger of having their land pillaged and polluted by government and business interests. It is to prevent this that our "Healing of the Nation:Respect is Due Havasupai Concert" was planned. Our goal was to "big-up" the tribe and remind them that they do indeed have a Sacred Covenant with the Creator to guard the heart of Mother Earth. To keep this Covenant they do not need to know how to drive a car, work a computer or understand complex contracts. They only need to trust those leaders, both elected and unelected, who truly understand and cherish this Covenant. Anyone who doesn't, does not see the tribe spiritually, only physically and financially, and therefore must be treated as a younger brother or sister, from whom guidance is seldom taken. Helicoptering in the band and equipment www.onelovepress.com The "Havasupai Healers" Basically we knew that if we can change how the tribe perceived themselves they would take their power back. A enhanced self-image would not only uplift the vibes in the village but the tribe would recommit to their covenant. Since the coming of the dominant culture, they, like most Native tribes, have begun to perceive themselves as the government agents, Bureau of Indian Affairs and mining companies perceive tham--namely as rather uneducated, unsophisticated, poverty-ridden. These groups do not see the spiritual nature, wisdom and destiny of these Original People. Julia and I joined with several other healers, both from within the tribe and from outside to bring this healing message to Havasu Canyon. Seated with Julia in the accompanying photo is a group of Havasupai tribal healers who worked with us on this festival. Though not elected leaders, they hold the true heart and soul of the tribe and are working to continue the customs, dances, and songs and protect the land and resources. The event was a combination of reasonings with several speakers followed by a reggae concert. The festival was the vision Damon Watahomogie (in the red bandana). Damon is the last "Keeper of the Havasupai Secrets," transferred to him by his grandfather. We met Damon (also called Idren) two years ago when we visited the canyon to find out why the tribe was devoted Bob Marley and reggae fans (you see Bob Marley tee shirts everywhere and his music is usually on in the small store). It was then that the three of us decided to organize this festival. Damon has been planning and raising funds for the last two years. A side note: When Bob Marley heard this ancient, remote tribe was listening to his music, he promised to go there but, unfortunately, he died before he could keep his promise. In 1982, a year after his death, Bob's mother, Mama B, had a generator and electric piano helicoptered in and in front of Havasu Falls, with the entire tribe gathered around, she played her son's music until dawn. These healers, lead by Damon Watahomogie and Roland Manakaja, worked with us to bring the message to the tribe. www.havasupaitribe.com The Havasupai are perfectly prepared to be the "Guardians of the Grand Canyon" Julia & Robert Roskind's address to the tribe: "Since time began, the Havasupai tribe has lived in honor and, for the most part, peace. You have kept your Covenant with the Creator as the Guardians of the Grand Canyon. For the last century, the dominant culture controlled much of your ancient land and attempted to mold the hearts and minds of your youths by removing them from the tribe in their formative years. According to prophesy, many of the tribe began to adopt the dominant cultures view of themselves- an interpretation that does not take into account the Creators view and is therefore incomplete and inaccurate. It is now time to reclaim your power by re-instilling within yourself individually, and your tribe collectively, the Creators image of who you truly are. You are the chosen people, chosen by the Creator as caretakers and guardians of the Heart of Mother Earth. The government and its agents do not understand this reality. Therefore, they must always be viewed as a people with a limited perspective and dealt with as such. It is a Sacred Covenant and one for which you have been perfectly prepared. To keep you Covenant all tribal members do not need all of the skills demanded in modern society. You need only to love you home and each other and claim our legal and spiritual rights. Many of you were meant to stay on this land. Some of you were meant to leave for a period of time. You are all still His guardians. In all your dealings regarding your tribal rights and land, look only to those leaders, both elected and unselected, that put the tribe an its Sacred Covenant first. This was done recently in the Hopi Nation when they rejected gambling to keep their Covenant never to benefit from anothers weakness. Release the recent past, as it does not serve you as you step into your future. Be gentle with yourselves and each other and treat all as the healers-the teachers of love-that we are all destined to be. See each other as the full expression of Love in form. Claim your perfect Self and allow your courage to step forward and your patience to know you are whole and prepared. This could be a good time! YOU ARE THE ONES YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR! Give thanks Julia, Alicia & Robert Roskind www.onelovepress.com A word from Leonard Peltier Racquel Burnett, from the Leonard Peltier Defense Commitee in Kansas City (www.leonardpeltier.org), also came to address the tribe. Leonard Peltier is a citizen of the Anishinabe and Dakota/Lakota Nations who has been unjustly imprisoned for over 27 years. As a member of the American Indian Movement (AIM) he was wrongfully convicted of the deaths of two FBI agents at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation at Wounded Knee, SD. The main goal of the government in imprisoning Leonard was to destroy AIM. To the international community, Leonard's case is a stain on America's human rights record. Amnesty International considers him a "political prisoner" who should be "immediately and unconditionally released." To many Indigenous Peoples, Leonard is a symbol of the abuse and repression they have endured for so long. Leonard was recently nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize and is a candidate for President. Racquel made a moving address to the tribe and read a letter from Leonard, which read in part: "Greetings, friends and supporters, I'm doing OK. I fell healthy in body and spirit but determination for freedom is still very alive. In short, I have not surrendered...I know this gathering today is to bring unity among all nations and I know you are all in it for the long haul and you will accomplish your goals no matter how long it takes. We were taught by our elders that there were good people everywhere...so that as we come together as nations we should invite people of all races...Our elders said that in order to be able to unite people, we must be able to pray together and break bread together. I have always agreed with this." Racquel Burnett from the Leonard Peltier Defense Committee www.leonardpeltier.org A Hopi Elder Shares his Wisdom Radford Quamahongnewa also spoke to the tribe. Radford is a Snake Priest from the Sunforehead Clan from the Hopi village of Shungopavi. He is also one of the few remaining Hopi Traditionalist, committed to preserving the Hopi ideals, culture, ceremonies and traditions. He has seen how the adopting of the materialistic path by many members of his tribe have lead to confusion, unhappiness, debt and sickness. His message to the Havasupai was clear: "When I saw your home, when I went to your waterfalls, my heart was so enthused. This is your place. Don't let anyone take it away from you. I want to encourage you to maintain it as natural as you can. Don't let this area be destroyed or modified in any way or it will not be the same. You have everything here to survive with. In Hopi, we are semi-arid. We have to work real hard to get our crops to grow. Here you have your river...The young people must unite together to keep this place natural...You have a great mind. Don't destroy your physical bodies. Don't destroy your minds. Stay away from things that will hurt your mind and body...Guide your young people. Tell them the stories, the Supai way. I will pray for you." Radford and Lorna Quamahongnewa with their grandson, Rad Mapatis www.hopi.org The leader of the Hopi "No casino" referndum. Dawn Quamahongnewa-Mapatis is Radford and Lorna's daughter. She now lives in the Hopi village of Hotevilla. Julia and I met Dawn when we organized our "Healing of the Hopi Nation Concerts" in Hopiland last September, when we brought four reggae artists (Abijah, Zema, Lions of Israel and Uproot) to all the Hopi schools to thank the tribe for keeping their covenant with the Creator. After our concert at her school, where she was a teacher's aide at the time, she thanked us for reminding her students of the Hopi Covenant to teach and learn One Love and peace and of their prophesy that when the Hopi Nation begins to heal (honor the Creator's Way over the "path of materialism"), the global healing will begin. Her message to the Havasupai was in part: "My message to you is to be proud. Don't forget who you are. Don't forget where you come from. I know sometimes you want to get out and go somewhere else. You have such a beautiful, beautiful land. When I first saw your waterfalls, I wanted to cry. It was really blue! Be strong. Be happy. Always, alway remember who you are, Who made you, why you are here. The sign says 'Reclaim the Grand Canyon.' You don't have to reclaim the Grand Canyon because it was always yours. We the Indigenous People are still here." Abijah with Hopi youths at our "Healing of the Hopi Nation Concerts" in September www.hopi.org The Importance of the Hopi decision to ban casinos In the last few decades, over 300 Native American tribes have voted "yes" to casinos on their reservations and all the money, and problems, they bring. The Hopis, the most culturally-intact of all the tribes, was the first, and only, to say "no." As their website (www.hopi.org) reads: The Hopi have inhabited the same place for a millennium, far longer than any other people in North America. They are not only the oldest dwellers in this land but are considered by most other Indians to have a wisdom, a knowledge of things, beyond average comprehension. Peace-loving and knit tightly together by clan relationships, they are intensely spiritual and fiercely independent. Their religion, deep and all-pervading, is a many stranded cord that unites them to their stark, and beautiful environment. Their recent rejection of casinos in May was the second time they refused casinos. What is even more amazing is the circumstances under which they said "no." The tribe is in danger of losing million a year, a third of their tribal budget, if they lose royalties from a coal lease. The casinos were expected to add over million a year to this poverty-stricken tribe--a great incentive to say "yes." Also the casino would not have been built near the 11 Hopi villages but rather 80 miles away on tribal land on Interstate 40. It would not have effected their day-to-day life. However, Dawn decided to join with a few others and defeat the casino referndum. She even took students from her school to the tribal council meeting so that they could tell them the reasons why they did not want the casino, much to the dismay of the "pro-gambling" council members. She encountered much resistance but with her father's quiet support ("He was important because it was his teachings that lead me to do what I did."), Dawn persisted. With other supporters, she visited her tribal villages and reasoned with them stressing two main points: 1) Hopi tradition says they are never to benefit from another's weakness, and; 2) Money was never a part of the Hopi society before the whites came. Though now they must use money to pay bills, if permanent large sums are given yearly to the tribe, it will be very destructive. On these two premises alone--not that casinos would bring in organized crime, not that they would destroy the day-to-day Hopi life, not that Hopis would have to look daily at gaudy buidings and traffic--the Hopis, including many young voters, many of who heard our message in the September concerts, overwhemingly said "NO!" to casinos and their cash flow. The Hopi healing truly has begun! This success sends the message, especially to other Native American tribes, that the centuries of succumbing to the seductive materialism of the dominant culture, at the expense of their culture and land, has weakened, at least in this very important, and prophetic, incident. Julia in Hopiland holding banner from Hopi saying "Together with all nations we protect both land and life and hold the world in balance." www.hopi.org The Uproot band singing and speaking the message Our tribal drummers for the event was Uproot, a fantastic reggae band fom Yuma, Arizona lead by George Flores. It was quite an effort on their part. It took 6 helicopter trips to get the band and all their equipment, hanging precariously in a sling below the choper, to the village. With a combination of mostly original and a few Marley songs, Uproot opened everyone hearts and minds. Between songs, George shared his message with the tribe: "Havasupai, you are the chosen people, as you've heard all night. You need to remain strong and take the veil out from your eyes and be yourselves. Keep the story going, with yourselves and the children. A beautiful place like this will only hold beautiful people like you. I'm telling you--right from my heart. For me to perform my music for you in this place, with the walls all around us, is a spark to the fire that's got to be lit. We are to keep this fire burning. Just like Bob Marley says, "There's One Love in the house!" George Flores, lead singer, founder and inspiration of Uproot (yumareggae@hotmail.com) www.onelovepress.com The healing waters of Havasu Fall For five hours, all of us took over 400 Havasupais on a journey into One Love, while thanking them for keeping their sacred covenant with the Creator to guard the "heart of Mother Earth." We reminded them to only follow the advice of those leaders that embrace this covenant. Our message rang clear and strong on that summer night and, especially with the help of Uproot's music, went deep into the heart and soul of the tribe. The conditions for them to continue and complete their task as Guardians are in place--their remoteness, their legal rights, their love of their beautiful land, their desire to stay there, their love of One Love reggae music, and their newly emerging conscious leaders. They will never again see themselves through the eyes of the dominant culture but rather through the eyes of the Creator. The healing has begun. The protection of the Grand Canyon by the Havasupai is assured. The sacred Havasu Falls www.onelovepress.com Our thanks to Idren! All of this came about through the commitment of one person, Idren Watahomogie. His love for his people and his land motivated him to do whatever it took to get this message to his people. Against all odds, he persisted and pulled it off. Much respect to our brother, Idren! Give thanks, Julia, Alicia and Robert Roskind Authors of "Rasta Heart" and "The Gathering of the Healers" Our family works with local healers (teachers of love) to bring a message of One Love and forgiveness to their community through reggae music, reasonings and Native American wisdom. All our events are non-commercial. To date, we have organized 35 concerts in Jamaica (including our last one on Bob Marley's 59th birthday which included 13 One Love reggae artists and was broadcast to the entire island), 5 in Hopiland and now this one in Havasu Canyon.
