Have a stack of membership renewals to go through today and tomorrow, and I will let anyone whose renewal arrived during my absence know that it has arrived at this end as soon as I have processed it. Same for new memberships. Will be sending out August renewal notices in the next week or so. And also updating my drop list for anyone whose membership is way overdue (my least favorite job!), so if you are overdue, be sure to send in your membership asap. Postings for Wha Gwaan in RAW can now be sent directly to me once again at tap@kuentos.guam.net I was able to access my email accounts a few times during my travels and think I got all posts out that were sent to me while I was on the road. Some referred to events that had already taken place so those did NOT get included in WGIR. Remember that if you send me a post that includes graphics, photos or music, I will send that post back to you and request that you resend only the text part. I am happy to report that the Board is close to having a complete set of by-laws ready for approval. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone a couple days ago, and we have a few points to clarify, but I am confident that we should have a working set of by-laws ready to present to the massive soon come. On Wednesday, July 28 , that dreadlocked posse of high plains drifters called the Reggae Cowboys will bring heart-rollicking music to the lovely outdoor setting at the River River Ranch near Tahoe City. Doors 8:30pm/Showtime 9pm. Tickets are only $10 Stone Ranger is the long-awaited third North American release for the Reggae Cowboys. Four Caribbean ex-pats, based in Toronto, Canada, they are winning countless fans worldwide with their heart-rollicking reggae-based sound. Layering influences that include a mix of Caribbean genres, rock & roll and six-string spaghetti-western drama over reggae9s one-drop riddim, Stone ranger has come up with a unique sonic twist that points to a spiritual kinship between the pioneering black cowboys of the wild wild west and the rough rhythm riders of the equally untamed Jamaican music scene. Plan ahead for August with the Truckee Reggae Festival which is a two-part festival held on two separate weekends. The first one is on Saturday, August 7 with STEEL PULSE, LUCIANO, Mikey General, Dean Fraser, Nasio Fontaine and Trevor Hall. It will be held at the Truckee Regional Park Amphitheater in Truckee, CA just Highway 80 from Sacramento. Tickets are $30 advance and can be purchased at The Beat in Sacramento, at the gate, online at www.ticketweb.com or tickets.com. Gates open at 2:00pm and the music stops at 10 p.m. This is a lovely, relaxing spot to bring your whole family (no dogs) and shop at our arts and crafts booths between acts or eat at any number of food vendors. Steel Pulse speak for themselves. It9s been too long since they have been in the area. They are one of my personal favorite reggae bands. And Luciano and Nasio Fontaine! I can9t wait. Hang out for a few days in the Tahoe/Truckee area and catch MIDNITE on Wednesday, August 11 at the River Ranch Lodge, Tahoe City, CA which is just a few miles up the road from Truckee. This is a 21 and over club outside on the Truckee River. Midnite will play until midnite and start around 9 p.m. Plenty of tickets at the gates for this show and they are only $15. Midnite is still the most talked about roots reggae band on the scene today. Doors 8:30 pm and Showtime 9pm Down in Sacramento at Harlows Club on Thursday, August 12, rock and reggae fans alike can enjoy East Star Records new project - the EasyStar All Stars performing Pink Floyd9s Dub Side of the Moon - The Reggae Version of the Pink Floyd Classic. Easy Star Allstars who are taking their Easy Star Records release DUB SIDE OF THE MOON on the road to celebrate the album9s success so far and to introduce the unique project to even more ears. The Easy Star All-Stars will be giving rock fans, reggae heads, jam band kids, and other assorted hipsters a chance to experience a totally different take on the definitive rock record of the past two generations The second part of the Truckee Reggae Festival is on Saturday, August 21 with living legend, BURNING SPEAR celebrating his 35th year in the music business - a remarkable achievement. DIRTY DOZEN BRASS BAND (not reggae but lots of fun) will open the show along with some other regional acts including T-Club and Zion Roots. This is also at the Truckee Regional Park Amphitheater in Truckee, CA - and arts and crafts and food will round out the festivities. Tickets are $25 advance and a couple of bucks more at the gate which opens at 2:30 p.m. Bring the kids but leave Fido at home. Renegade Productions big blast for the summer is the FEATHER RIVER FESTIVAL on August 27, 28 and 29 at the Plumas County Fairgrounds in Quincy, CA (about two hours from Sacramento and Tahoe up in the beautiful Plumas County country). Advanced tickets are $80. Reno Radio runnings: KTHX - Sunday nights 9pm 100.1 called The Reggae Shack with Deejay Too Dread (not Tom - as erroneously typed in the Reggae Festival Guide) - his show is mainly roots-oriented reggae with occasional interviews, new releases and ticket giveaways. At the Blue Lamp club on Third Street, DJ Too Dread is having Sunday nights from 4-8 p.m. spinning roots reggae, and also has a regular reggae CD-spinning gig on Wednesdays at the Zephyr on Virginia in Reno Street at 9pm. Mark your calendars for August 13 to see David Kirton and the Modern Roots Band at the Sparks Cantina Los Tres Hombres. David is from from Barbados. They are passing through the area and we are lucky to have them. Last time I saw them was in Reggae in the Park in San Francisco.
