Have a stack of membership renewals to go through today and tomorrow, and I will let anyone whose renewal arrived during my absence know that it has arrived at this end as soon as I have processed it. Same for new memberships. Will be sending out August renewal notices in the next week or so. And also updating my drop list for anyone whose membership is way overdue (my least favorite job!), so if you are overdue, be sure to send in your membership asap. Postings for Wha Gwaan in RAW can now be sent directly to me once again at tap@kuentos.guam.net I was able to access my email accounts a few times during my travels and think I got all posts out that were sent to me while I was on the road. Some referred to events that had already taken place so those did NOT get included in WGIR. Remember that if you send me a post that includes graphics, photos or music, I will send that post back to you and request that you resend only the text part. I am happy to report that the Board is close to having a complete set of by-laws ready for approval. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone a couple days ago, and we have a few points to clarify, but I am confident that we should have a working set of by-laws ready to present to the massive soon come. Bill Gates, Microsoft's billionaire co-founder and the company's biggest shareholder, has said he intends to give his estimated $3bn share of the payout to his charitable trust, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The donation is just the latest in a line of offerings from Mr Gates, who in recent years has marked himself out as not only the world's richest man, but one of its biggest philanthropists. The Seattle-based Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has a $27bn endowment, and in the last decade has pledged more than $7bn to good causes. Set up in 2000 by Mr Gates and his wife Melinda from the merger of two family charitable trusts, the foundation is dedicated to promoting greater equality in global health and learning. 'Unconscionable disparity' Together with the British-based Wellcome Trust, which holds assets worth around #9bn, the foundation leads the world in charitable giving. Run by Mr Gates' father, William H Gates Sr, the foundation lists one of its primary goals as "reducing the 'unconscionable disparity' that exists between the way that we live and the way that the people of the developing world live". Mr Gates' money could help improve the health of millions In February, the foundation pledged $83m to help fight tuberculosis, a disease which the World Health Organisation says kills nearly 2 million people a year. Last year it donated $168m to fund research into malaria and made $60m available to fund research into how the risk of HIV infection among women in developing countries can be reduced. Backed by Mr Gates' vast wealth - amassed by building Microsoft into the world's biggest software company - the foundation's operations are driven by the concept of a more businesslike and hands-on approach to philanthropy. Making an impact Unlike the Wellcome Trust, a research-funding charity which was established in 1936 following the death of Sir Henry Wellcome, the foundation's set-up enables its benefactor to oversee how his money is being spent. At last year's World Economic Forum in Davos, Mr Gates told world leaders that he had a duty to ensure his wealth "goes back to global society in the most impactful way". The Gates' Foundation Endowment of $27bn. $7.1bn in grants since 1994. Largest grant: $1bn to the United Negro College Fund. Average grant: $903,711. Supports work in more than 100 countries. Since his involvement with the foundation, Mr Gates has become something of a "walking encyclopaedia of medical knowledge", according to Warren E Buffett, the chief executive of financial services firm Berkshire Hathaway. "I have heard him speak many times on this subject and each time I have been amazed by the breath of his knowledge," Mr Buffett told Time magazine. Mr Gates' wife also keeps a close eye on the effectiveness of the foundation's activities, Mr Buffett said. "Melinda, for her part, travels the world so that she can understand what a cheque from Seattle is actually accomplishing 10,000 miles away." In terms of assets, the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation dwarfs that of other well-known names in US philanthropy, such as the Rockefeller Foundation or the Ford Foundation. Long term vision In language that would not seem out of place in a modern company business plan, the Gates' foundation has pledged to "aggressively pursue a comprehensive approach" in the fight against Aids. "We must marshal the will and resources necessary to develop and distribute an Aids vaccine," Mr Gates has said. The foundation is also keen to counter criticism that it focuses too much on the trouble facing other countries, and not enough on those in need in its own backyard. Almost half of the foundation's resources are directed towards domestic US issues, according to Mr Gates. The foundation's single biggest grant - of $1bn - was awarded to the United Negro College Fund, America's largest minority higher education assistance organisation. The foundation also promotes access to technology in public libraries and funds groups helping to improve the lives of people in the foundation's own corner of the US, the Pacific Northwest. Mr Gates has said his long term vision is to improve the lives of millions of people across the globe. It is no small order, but Microsoft's co-founder is one of the few people in the world whose money may actually be able to match his words. ============ one, peace, roots-ee http://thearkband.com [7] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= From: The Ark Band (R.A.W. 1414) Subject: The ark band/raw 1414 headlines on july 30 in oklahoma city Date: Sunday, July 25, 2004 5:05 PM http://www.bricktownokc.com/reggae.html at 10: 30 pm at the bricktown reggae fest fest is on july 30 and july 31 one, peace, roots-ee http://thearkband.com [8] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From Ambassador David (R.A.W. #5) Subject: Reggae Runnings..... Peace and Light, Shelley ________________ What can we do, for the women of Juarez and Chihuahua? We can raise 700 dollars and relieve their desperate need for empowering community!!! Please attend Silvia Parraπs night of Performance, Music, Wine and Food, "SURVIVING FEMICIDE ON THE MAQUILADORA BORDER" When: Friday, July 23rd 7-9pm Where: Belladonna, 2436 Sacramento Street, Berkeley, Ca. 94702 www.belladonna.ws 510.883.0600 In response to the question.."What could I possibly do for the women of Juarez and other parts of Mexico whose daughters have disappeared'? we have an answer! Come to a benefit to raise funds to buy radio equipment for the mothers of Chihuahua where these murders have spread who are organizing to share information about the handling of their murdered daughter's investigations by police. Most importantly, this clandestine radio will help them stay connected and share safety information. Since, through the global economy, we directly benefit as US consumers from the horrible working conditions in Mexico which put these young women at risk, this is an opportunity to directly assist them.Silvia Parra, MA in Womenπs Spirituality from New College of California will present her thesis material on the disappeared women in Juarez through performance, spoken word, news, prayer, poetry. She will lead us in a discussion on what role womenπs spirituality can play in the betterment of womenπs lives. What are the economics of femicide? How does women's spirituality deal with femicide in the global economy? How can our spirituality empower our political activism? What is Artivism? How can womenπs spirituality address the needs of women today? What can we do, for the women of Juarez and Chihuahua? We can raise 700 dollars and relieve their desperate need for empowering communication!! New College of California Women's Spirituality "Laboratory" Series at Belladonna ------------------------------------ THE CORPORATION Winner of the DOCUMENTARY AUDIENCE AWARD at the 2004 SUNDANCE FILM FESTIVAL. A Feature documentary by Mark Achbar, Jennifer Abbott and Joel Bakan. THE CORPORATION engages us in a darkly amusing account of the institution's evolution as a legal "person" whose prime directive is to produce ever-increasing profit for it's shareholders regardless of the cost to anyone, or anything else. Imbuing it with this pathological nature is a recent human achievement. 150 years ago a corporation was merely an organized way of doing business. Today it is a global power that uses its status as a "person" to claim rights under the constitution. Self-interested, amoral, callous and deceitful, a corporations operational principles make it anti-social. It breaches social and legal standards to get its way even while it mimics the human qualities of empathy, caring and altruism. It suffers no guilt. Diagnosis: the institutional embodiment of laissez-faire capitalism fully meets the diagnostic criteria of a psychopath. Featuring a multitude of interviews with CEO's and top-level executives from some of the worlds largest corporations, representing a wide range of industries, including: oil (Shell), pharmaceuticals (Pfizer), computers (IBM), tires (Goodyear), carpets (Interface), public relations (Burson Marsteller), branding (Landor), and advertising (Initiative); as well as critical thinkers: Noam Chomsky, Peter Drucker, Milton Friedman, Naomi Klein, Mark Kingwell, Vandana Shiva, and muckraking filmmaker Michael Moore. Add to the mix a corporate spy, an undercover marketer, academics, pundits, historians and activists; deftly blend with newsreel footage, early TV advertisements, B movies, and corporate propaganda films and you have the fascinating, original portrait of an institution that is THE CORPORATION. Is there a cure for this pathological pursuit of profit-at-any-cost? Or can we only apply restraints? Will people regain control over the corporation? With cautious optimism, we are invited to reconsider our relationship with the dominant institution of our time. Our goal is to keep you informed at least three times a year, in addition to our annual newsletter, so you will be hearing from us again around the end of summer with more updates! Thank you for your continuing support. Comments and suggestions are always welcomed. Enjoy the Postcard! Tibetan Nuns Project ------------------------------------ Postcard from Dharamsala January to March 2004 This year we were fortunate in Dharamsala to get three extra days of teaching from His Holiness the Dalai Lama to end the year. December 29-31, at the request of a group from Korea, His Holiness gave lectures on the Shantidevas Entering the Bodhisattva Path at the main temple in Mcleod Ganj. Following this most of the monasteries and nunneries in the Dharamsala area began their winter breaks. Dolma Ling was an exception to this, as those nuns began their annual exams on January 12 and finished on January 16 after which they started their two month winter break. The Shugsep nuns had also finished writing their exams, and on January 18, around 20 nuns went to Bodh Gaya to attend the Nyingma Monlam a prayer festival that lasts for almost a month. This year, as usual, the Health Workers Training was held at Dolma Ling nunnery. It started from January 27 and this training was for 15 days. Two nuns each from Shugsep, Geden Choeling, Jamyang Choeling and Tilokpur nunneries attended this course. Three nuns from Dolma Ling participated, so altogether they were 11 nuns. This training was taught by nurse Tsering Lhamo from the Tibetan Childrens Village and by Ms. Jo Gibson from England). At the same time as the health worker training course, seven nuns from Dolma Ling also attended a computer training at Dolma Ling to further the skills learned in the previous class the year before.. This year, the lama mani (religious story teller) training which was to begin January 5, 2004 was cancelled as the lama mani himself was very sick and therefore could not come. We later heard that he had expired and it is indeed a great loss to all the Tibetans in exile. His Holiness the Dalai Lama gave his annual spring teachings for the public at the main temple from March 7 to March 22 on key texts from the Nyingma and Kagyu traditions, Long-chen-rap-jams Kindly Bent to Ease us, Dza Patrul Rinpoches Words of my Perfect Teacher and the One Hundred Thousand Songs of Milarepa The new term at Dolma Ling nunnery started from March 24. This year we have 25 new nuns and now the total number of nuns at Dolma Ling is now nearly 200. We were also able to hire one new female English teacher and a Tibetan teacher (a nun who was earlier a student of Dolma Ling and who has completed an advanced Tibetan language course comparable to a B.A. and a teacher training course. Geden Choeling started its new term at the beginning of April. They also have a new woman English teacher. Shugsep started its new term near the end of April. ------------------------- This message is being brought to you by the depths of Mt Elfinstone! Website: http://www.hemptown.com ----------------------- Dear Friends: In this bulletin you will find: 1) An action alert about how you can ignite new energy at the grassroots by going to the movies. Michael Moore's new film, Fahrenheit 9/11, offers a special opportunity to use the force of pop culture for political change. To make sure that moviegoers go beyond education and take real action, Global Exchange has produced a leaflet that gives moviegoers five easy ways to contribute to peace and justice. You can download the leaflets at: http://www.globalexchange.org/countries/iraq/f911.html More information about the film and the theater leafleting is below. 2) An invitation to host Ghazwan Al Mukhtar in your community. Mr. Al Mukhtar is coming from Iraq to the US for a national speaking tour to raise public awareness about the disaster in his country. For more information, or to arrange an event for Mr. Al Mukhtar, contact GX's Speakers Bureau at: 800-497-1994 ext. 253 or june@globalexchange.org More details about hosting an event are below. Thank you, as always, for you efforts on behalf of peace, human rights, and social justice. Global Exchange ---------------- 1) Help Fahrenheit 9/11 Movie Goers Get Active: Flyer at Film Screenings! June 25, millions of Americans have gotten to see the eye-opening education film about the aftermath of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks when they turn out in droves to see Michael Moore9s new film Fahrenheit 9/11. The film, which received top awards at the Cannes Film Festival and has won raves from the critics who have seen it, shows how the Bush administration9s response to the 9/11 attacks has harmed people all over the world--from the hundreds of U.S. troops and thousands of innocent Iraqis whose lives were lost in the recent war to the millions of Americans whose civil liberties were rolled back with the passage of the PATRIOT Act. It9s wonderful that Moore9s new movie has so much potential for education. But education about our government9s actions is only the first step toward changing harmful policies. Let9s help F 9/11 movie-goers take the next step. TAKE ACTION - DISTRIBUTE FLYERS OUTSIDE FAHRENHEIT 9/11 SCREENINGS CODEPINK, Global Exchange, and United for Peace and Justice have created a flyer that you can download from any of our websites and distribute outside Fahrenheit 9/11 screenings. The flyer describes five things F 9/11 fans can do to turn up the heat on our government: Get Behind the National Voter Registration Effort Raise Hell about Halliburton9s War Profiteering Travel to New York City to Protest at the Republican National Convention on August 29 Join a Peace Group and Help End the Occupation of Iraq Educate Your Family and Friends The flyer also lists numerous activist email lists and websites as well as independent media outlets to provide movie-goers with more ideas for action and ongoing news and analysis. You can download the flyer at http://www.globalexchange.org/countries/iraq/f911.html or at the http://www.codepinkalert.org or http://www.unitedforpeace.org websites. In order to save paper, the flyer is half a page, double-sided, so you9ll have to take the original that you download from our websites to the copy store, and cut it in half after you9ve made copies. It9s easy to find out where Fahrenheit 9/11 is showing in your community. Just go to http://www.f911tix.com/ When you hand out the flyers, people will be more likely to take them if you tell them what the flyer is about. Try saying, 3things you can do about what you saw in Fahrenheit 9/112 as you hand out your flyers. Between CODEPINK, Global Exchange, and United for Peace and Justice, we have a network of tens of thousands of peace and justice activists. If enough of us all over the country get out to our movie theatres to flyer people who9ve just seen Fahrenheit 9/11, we will be making a real difference for people who are upset about our government9s policies but don9t know what they can do to change them. Let9s not miss this opportunity! P.S. We also strongly encourage you to see the film yourself! ----------------------------------------------- 2) Join CODEPINK for "Hotter Than July" - Keeping the heat on the Democrats as the world watches! Ghazwan Al Mukhtar is coming from Iraq to the USA for a speaking tour in August. Hosting an event with Mr. Al Mukhtar is a great way to educate and activate community members in your area. Tentative dates of the speaking tour are Aug. 2 - Sept. 2 Below is a description about Ghazwan Al Mukhtar. For more information or to arrange an event with Mr. Al Mukhtar, please contact Global Exchange Speakers Bureau at: 415-575-5542 or 800-497-1994 ext. 253 or june@globalexchange.org GHAZWAN AL MUKHTAR, an energetic and charismatic speaker, sheds a harsh light on the motives behind the US invasion of Iraq while discussing what Iraqis are doing to non-violently oppose the occupation. An electrical engineer by training, Al Mukhtar sold medical equipment in Iraq during the Hussein years. He rebuffed requests to work for the government, and for his political independence was twice interrogated by regime agents. Although a foe to the Hussein dictatorship, Al Mukhtar was also opposed to the deadly UN sanctions on Iraq, and worked throughout the 1990s to get the sanctions lifted. Since the US invasion and occupation in March 2003, Al Mukhtar has dedicated himself to speaking out against what he sees as an attempt by the US to control the Iraqi oil supply. As a board member of the international Occupation Watch Center in Baghdad, Al Mukhtar has researched the devastation of the Iraqi infrastructure and the failure to rebuild phone, electrical and water systems. He is particularly critical of US companies such as Halliburton, which he accuses of outright war profiteering. Al Mukhtar was scheduled to tour the US this Spring but the US Government delayed his visa. He now has a visa allowing his tour in August. Through personal stories and hard evidence, Al Mukhtar demonstrates the social, economic, and environmental impacts of the US invasion and occupation of Iraq. Topics include: Oil and War: US Motives for Invading Iraq Non-violent Iraqi opposition to the Occupation War Profiteering by US Companies Human Rights Abuses in Iraq Political Transition and the Future for Democracy in Iraq. For each speaking event with Al Mukhtar, we ask event organizers to: *Provide venue arrangements (time, location and equipment for the event). *Provide hospitality for our speaker, including food, lodging if an overnight stay is necessary (home stay is often okay) and transportation to and from the airport or other events. *Publicize events within your community and to the local media. (Global Exchange can provide assistance in this effort.) *Provide honorarium and travel expenses for the speaker9s tour. We understand that some groups can provide more support than others. Our experience has shown that seeking co-sponsors helps to share the costs and responsibilities of an event. Akasa is a chanteuse, composer of sacred music, and sacred sound ceremonialist whose work evokes and embodies the cosmological powers. She had a powerful initiation at the Oracle of Delphi in Greece, that opened an incredible shamanic sound and multi-ethnic musical dimension. Following the initial mystical experience, in the warm billowing waves of the Aegean sea, Akasa heard enchanted melodies arising from the depths of the water. After she returned to the States, she continued to receive sacred songs, often at unexpected moments of ecstatic wonder, sudden luminosity and in surprising awakening during dark nights of the soul. Akasa has performed at several International Conference of the Study of Shamanism and Alternate Modes of Healing. In part, Akasa's work focuses on a ceremonial sound rendition of Pamela and Brian's work, "Ten Cosmological Powers of Love" with the spontaneous improvisation of sound, movement and ritual. "Loving is Divine Madness" is fueled by the "Cosmological Power of love: Allurement," a term by Brian Swimme and Pamela Eakins. Akasa invites you to join her and dive into your own cosmological power of "Allurement" and discover the essence of who you are, LOVE, for the first time through her amazing transmission of love and sacred sound. "Hearing Akasa, opens up in me the recognition of both ancient voices of all the earth's languages and voices from people yet to be the great unborn who wish to see our planet made more peaceful. She is a rare gift. Listen to her." Fred Alan Wolf, Ph.D. National Book Award winning author of Matter into Feeling, The Spiritual Universe, and others Sat. July 31 7:30 pm Ancient Grandmothers Healing Circle - Inverness With interspecies communication pioneer, Penelope Smith In this age of evolution from dualistic to unified consciousness, the Divine Feminine within and around summons us to nurture the Earth and heal our deepest sense of separation borne through lifetimes of travel in this physical realm. Our wise ancestor spirits, the Ancient Grandmothers, conduct us deeper into our true source of divine power within. Since Penelope was initiated into the circle of the Ancient Grandmothers, she has worked with these powerful, compassionate, loving, and delightful elder spirits for guidance and healing. The Ancient Grandfathers help hold the circle of energy and conduct the wisdom and healing power of the Ancient Grandmothers. These circles have deeply touched many souls and places wherever they have been held around the world. 7:30 Gather at the Floating Island of Peace; 8:00 The circle begins in the Golden Temple of Divine Love as we call our guiding spirits and animal powers from all the directions, drumming, rattling and chanting together to set the tone, heightening our energy for the arrival of the Ancient Grandmothers and Grandfathers. We bask in their palpable presence, hear their songs, music, and stories within and around us, and feel the transformational energy of their healing power. Group singing, drumming and sharing of experiences close the circle; 9:30 Socializing and potluck sharing. Enjoy the peaceful, magnificent Inverness, California ridge top setting, overlooking the ocean with views to San Francisco. You are welcome to bring sacred objects to create an altar for the circle, drums, rattles, or other musical instruments, a backjack, pillow or blanket for extra comfort, and a potluck snack or drink. At this current moment in his journey, he has returned to the foundation of his inspiration, improvisational acoustic piano. His new work delves the Great Mystery of the "ambiguous center" - musically exploring the point of tension and duality from which flows all distance and all closeness, all action and all stillness, all detachment and all connection.http://www.robertrich.com Mark Deutsch - Sitar and the custom-made Bazantar Mark's ambient explorations invoke the ancient traditions of trance ritual and embody a sacred musicality rarely heard in contemporary cultures. A synergistic convergence of East and West, the Bazantar is an instrument of his own design; a five-string acoustic Bass with the addition of four drone strings and twenty-nine sympathetic strings, giving it an unprecedented range that produces protean tones of innovation and intensity that seem to resonate from within the very nexus of primordial sound. www.bazantar.com Sukhawat Ali Khan & Riffat Sultana - Qawwali Sufi Singing Sukhawatji and his sister Riffat are the children of the renown Classical Pakistani singer Ustad Salamat Ali Khan, and they are the current living embodiment of an incredible lineage of music that can be traced back to 16th Century India, where their forefathers established Sham Chorasi School of Music in the court of Akbar the Great. Box 1511, Vallejo, Ca 94590 ------------------------------------------- In order to change the way we live we must demand a change we must stand up for what we believe in and peacefully fight for what we deserve. If we want to end war and begin peace then we must demand not command the destruction of all that creates war. That means the dematerialization of all weapons of all kinds. Growing up in America I have been taught that we Americans are the wealthiest people on earth. That we are leaders and visionaries in creating a new, that we are role models to all nations of EARTH. Is this not true? Do we not influence the entire globe? Do we not have men and women young and old who have risked and do risk everything in order to make sure that future generations will be able to survive? Its time for us to change everything in order to insure that our children our childrens children will have a home to live on. If we want to change the way we educate ourselves we must demand how we wish to learn and experience life. Or do we wish to continue to force feed our selves information that is no longer valid? Do we choose to continue to imprison our minds controlling the youth and limiting the elderly? Or do we demand a change and co-create a world that is free, that is sovereign, and that is unified? I demand a change! I demand to be free from all depression and all forms of oppression. I demand the end all slavery both mental and physical. If we are truly leaders and visionaries wishing to be a positive influence to all humans then we must unite create a community that does not live in poverty and misery. We have the capabilities to end all suffering and begin a new way of life a way of life that our ancestors lived, a life that honored the Earth that new and believed in peace and love. Those few the elite that control the masses that govern our minds and bodies must and are now awakening to truth that they are no different than us the common people. I demand that we continue to spread awareness and plant seeds of consciousness within ourselves, co-creating all-things that assist in restoring our environment, feeding the starving, healing the sick, and providing to the poor. It can be done it will be done it is inevitable its just a matter of time a choice that we all have, a time that we choose to make. So what do you demand? What do you dream to create? What do you wish to experience? What are you tired of doing and being? Well? Speak up and share! Speak your truth! !DEMAND A CHANGE! --------------------------------------- Last but least! This new time is about LOVE..Common Unity for the community we all live in.. Its getting harder times.. Time to find our sopace within our hearts and GIVE... what you give comes back ten fold.. sometimes immediately.. So much works and must enjoy the summer, ITS hot out there. Support us and we can continue to serve the vibes.. One Love One Love Editorial Staff I'll keep all posted on next Bi-monthly.
