Have a stack of membership renewals to go through today and tomorrow, and I will let anyone whose renewal arrived during my absence know that it has arrived at this end as soon as I have processed it. Same for new memberships. Will be sending out August renewal notices in the next week or so. And also updating my drop list for anyone whose membership is way overdue (my least favorite job!), so if you are overdue, be sure to send in your membership asap. Postings for Wha Gwaan in RAW can now be sent directly to me once again at tap@kuentos.guam.net I was able to access my email accounts a few times during my travels and think I got all posts out that were sent to me while I was on the road. Some referred to events that had already taken place so those did NOT get included in WGIR. Remember that if you send me a post that includes graphics, photos or music, I will send that post back to you and request that you resend only the text part. I am happy to report that the Board is close to having a complete set of by-laws ready for approval. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone a couple days ago, and we have a few points to clarify, but I am confident that we should have a working set of by-laws ready to present to the massive soon come. Date: Sun, 25 Jul 2004 10:54:53 -0700 Greetings All- I have never been a person who asks for help when it comes to helping other people make their own dreams a reality, but in this case I have been moved to write to all of you with a plea for a group of people in Capetown, South Africa. A man named Brian Rath contacted me as he has spent thousands and thousands of dollars trying to bring some really talented youth out of the Gugulethu ghetto, and get them on the world's stage. I ask that all of you take a little time out of your day to check out this letter, and indeed to donate whatever you can to help these people continue doing some very blessed works. I know we all have plenty of things to spend our money on, but this seems to me to be a really worthwhile cause that will help a whole generation of people in a place that has been so oppressed for so many years. Please, if you can, donate a few dollars via paypal to help get some of this wonderful music (I have heard about a dozen of the tracks) finished and out to the people. It will help not only these artists, but future artists who are working hard to make a name for themselves in a place that continues to fight down even the most positive of works. Thanks for your time and please feel free to forward this to anyone and everyone who you think could help support this amazing studio and it's current and future stable of artists. Kind Regards and Nuff Respect- Steffen Franz aka Stand Out Selector President, Positive Sound Massive Recordings RAW # 142 and #194 __________________ To Whom It May Concern: A Plea for Help! The urban ghetto or "township" of Gugulethu (pronounced goo-goo-lair-two) in Cape Town, South Africa, is home to a strong, and growing Rasta community. While working for a small, independent label last year, I was exposed to the riddims and beats of conscious roots, ragga, and dancehall coming out of Gugulethu. And I was forever moved. Having been a fan of reggae since my student days in the late 70s, and being no stranger to the underground (having run South Africas only political resistance label during the apartheid 80s), I took a small inheritance and invested it into a vision of promoting some of this truly world-class talent onto the world stage. Our first project was an album for Zoro, a Gugulethu Rasta, now a resident of Sweden , who is fast establishing a strong performing career there. An artist of incredible presence, love and humility, Zoros roots were humble, to say the least, but his music had to get out. We found a way to make it happen and we know that Zee is destined for great things (excerpts from the album available on request). Hes already opened for Julian Marley and Gentleman at a handful of shows in Europe. Yet there are so many other brethren and sistren trying to get musical careers going here. The talent is enormous. These are young, black, talented artists who deserve to be heard! Yet the opportunities they have are so limited. With Zoro, and Crosby (the creator of Zoros riddims), we developed a plan for the recording and release of a number of Cape-based artists. But, Zoros album incurred far higher production costs than anticipated. As a result, our money simply ran out and we have had to shelve plans for the further development of any local artists. Even Crosby, who I supported entirely in my uptown apartment, has had to move downtown again to Gugulethu and everything now hangs in the balance. We appeal to all reggae fans to help us with whatever you can to keep this vision alive. We want to take the South African reggae sound to a higher level. These artists are the roots of an African Renaissance in Reggae. Please help however you can. With enough contributions we can do so much more than keep the vision alive ? we can make it real! Donations can be made via Credit Card or ATM into our PayPal account by going to http://www.paypal.com and then hitting the "Send Money" feature and send it to the e-mail address: soundscape@telkomsa.net in care of Brian Rath. You can also send any and all donations via Check or Money Order to the address below. Thanks in advance for your help and time with this matter... No Amount is to Small!
