Have a stack of membership renewals to go through today and tomorrow, and I will let anyone whose renewal arrived during my absence know that it has arrived at this end as soon as I have processed it. Same for new memberships. Will be sending out August renewal notices in the next week or so. And also updating my drop list for anyone whose membership is way overdue (my least favorite job!), so if you are overdue, be sure to send in your membership asap. Postings for Wha Gwaan in RAW can now be sent directly to me once again at tap@kuentos.guam.net I was able to access my email accounts a few times during my travels and think I got all posts out that were sent to me while I was on the road. Some referred to events that had already taken place so those did NOT get included in WGIR. Remember that if you send me a post that includes graphics, photos or music, I will send that post back to you and request that you resend only the text part. I am happy to report that the Board is close to having a complete set of by-laws ready for approval. I was able to talk to Kyle by phone a couple days ago, and we have a few points to clarify, but I am confident that we should have a working set of by-laws ready to present to the massive soon come. Also i am president of NGO \"Digital Culure\" where we provide lots of actions with kids with no parents (killed or missing in war in Bosnia,Croatia and Kosovo). Idea of Trenchtown festival is to provide help to refugees kids volunteer and to take some of money (couse this is primary help in Serbia). The Trenchown is just place where refugees lived. Also we want to make one youth center in Subotica ( in Serbia is no Youth Centers), where we can provide acitivities for youths. Festival was also on 1.may.2003 and looks like everithyng is going perfect. Lot of artist from Europe and all around world came to Trenchtown: Mad Professor-UK,Black Prince(jamaica), Rootsman-UK, Eyesburn, Del Arno Band, Hurricane Sound system-Holland,artist from Hungary, Venezuela, Sweden, America, Italy... In whole story local government was gave us only The space, no even 1 eur. For all money we make deal(some kind of credit-they gave us all equip. and we payed artist trought tickets) with private firms for a long time cooperation couse we know that festival will provide positive bilans for 4-5 years. We need help. But this year the politicans did not gave us permision for the space for Trenchtown and we are now in big problems. We are now in initative for bringing back Trenchtown festival. Fresta (Danish) fondation helping us with this project, but this help is for take some local actions but means a lot. We need help of any kind. Its hard to say but we need money. 5000 euros, or maybe some artist can came here for food and beds, maybe some old vinyl, old recorders for Trenchtown 2005 it will be mean a lot. We want to win this battle for Trenchtown festival and everything what is \"under\" festival. This festival is held on two different weekends and is star studded. The first weekend is Saturday, August 7 and the music is from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. Steel Pulse from the U.K. is the headliner while Luciano must be considered as a double headliner with Steel Pulse. Luciano9s posse including singer/songwriter, Mikey General and saxophonist per excellence Dean Fraser will also do their own sets. Opening the show is Trevor Hall who is touring with Steel Pulse and the sleeper of this show is Nasio Fontaine who has seldom, if ever performed on the west coast but is considered as the same caliber of singer as the late Garnett Silk. Arts and crafts booths with rugs, jewelry, rasta accessories, plus delicious food booths will add to the festival atmosphere. Attendees can bring in ice chests but no alcohol or glass. Beer and wine may be purchased from the Lyons Club beer booth. This is a rain or shine event and dogs will not be allowed in to the park. STEEL PULSE have been perfecting their original and distinctly high-energy style of reggae music for a quarter of a century. As the only British reggae group to win a Grammy Award (for 3Babylon the Bandit2 in 1985), their international success continues to inspire audiences of both new and long-dedicated fans. It has also earned them subsequent Grammy nominations for 3Victims2, 3Rastafari Centennial,2 3Rage & Fury2 and for 3Living Legacy,2 in 2000. Their music is an extension of their roots. Always rebels with a cause, the vanguard tends to be where they are. Spike Lee met the group at a fundraising function and soon selected Can9t Stand The Heat,9 written by Steel Pulse founder and lead vocalist David Hinds, for his film 3Do The Right Thing2 Steel Pulse9s powerful performances have recently been hailed as 3 an occasion to contemplate political art9s effectiveness 2 by The New York Times. The reggae super-group has performed live with Sting, Inxs, Santana, Robert Palmer, Herbie Hancock, Bob Dylan and the band9s own idols, Bob Marley & the Wailers - among many others. Cameo appearances by the likes of Jay Leno, Branford Marsalis and Robert Townsend have graced their videos. Hinds and Brown9s parents came to England to work when Jamaica was still a British colony, bringing their Victorian colonial traditions to the Jamaican community of Handsworth in Birmingham; customs that remained intact throughout the 1960s. For example, the steps of Hinds9 family9s home were shined with bright red polish by his sisters every weekend. Its front room, replete with constantly washed and starched crochet-work covering frames and vases, was reserved for an influx of Jamaican visitors who spoke of the latest politics on the island and brought over the newest dance crazes and hit songs. STEEL PULSE tours worldwide with an eight-piece ensemble including co-founder Selwyn Brown on vocals and keyboards, Clifford 3Moonie2 Pusey on lead guitar, Alvin Ewen on bass, Sidney Mills on keyboards and Conrad Kelly on drums and percussion. Beloved ex-drummer Steve 3Grizzly2 Nesbitt9s health has continued to prevent him from touring with STEEL PULSE since the 2001 Living Legacy Tour. The STEEL PULSE website (www.steel-pulse.com ) is an international focal point for music fans and watchers of catalysts for social change to gather, listen, chat and read. STEEL PULSE look forward to kicking off their 30-city U.S. summer 2004 tour on July 14th in celebration of the release of African Holocaust. Luciano, humbly born Jepther Washington McClymont on October 20, 1964 in Manchester, Jamaica, has made an impact on the lives of people worldwide with his visionary music. Luciano9s music stimulates thought, motivates spirit and poetically lifts the listener above the physical and the material. Anyone who has ever heard the talented artiste perform, can testify to the profound affect that Luciano9s music has upon the individual. Luciano began his musical career in his local church choir which formed an essential part of his early musical nurturing and the development of his distinctly beautiful baritone voice. Much of Luciano9s early music encouragement came from his father who loved music and taught Luciano to play the guitar hand-crafted by him. Luciano was later influenced by the music of Bob Marley, Dennis Brown and Stevie Wonder. Luciano9s stage name upon arrival in Kingston was 3Stepper John2, given to him because of his powerful strides. Like many of his predecessors, Luciano was discovered in the dancehall working with sound systems such as Earthquake, Earth Ruler and Kilamanjaro. Homer Harris, instrumental in grooming the career paths of such artistes as Buju Banton, Sizzla and Lady G, took the young artiste under his wing and found 3Stepper John2 to be one of his most receptive students due to his intelligence and disciplined devotion to his art. Mr. Harris eventually renamed the artiste Luciano as he found it to be more compatible with the spiritual artiste9s personality. By 1994 Luciano attracted the attention of Chris Blackwell9s Island Records who signed the singer to a deal which produced the critically and internationally successful 3Where There Is Life2 album in 1994. The album9s title track as well as singles 3It9s Me Again Jah2 and 3Lord Give Me Strength2 charted number one in Jamaica and on international reggae charts and earned the singer a Best New Artiste Jammy in 1994 and a Best Artiste Jammy Award in 1995. Luciano9s second album for Island 3Messenger2 was released in 1997 and named by Time Magazine as one of the ten best albums in the world which along with his insatiably exciting performances further solidified Luciano9s position as the pivotal voice of the next generation of roots reggae in the tradition of Marley. In 1998, Luciano formed his own independent company and label known as Messenjah and Qabalah Music and released 3Sweep Over My Soul2 for VP Records in 1999. Successfully touring North America and European annually, has kept the popular artist busy. Returning to the studio in 2000, Luciano produced two releases in 2001 3Great Controversy2 for Jet Star and the Grammy nominated 3A New Day2 for VP. Luciano latest release3Serve Jah2 has many proclaiming this one of the artiste9s finest works to date and resulted from a collaboration with producers Jack Scorpio and Joel Chin backed by the musicianship of the trademark Firehouse Crew and musical director Dean Frazer. >From the rugged green mountains of Dominica a passionate manifestation of Rastafari comes forward, It is the future of reggae. His name is Nasio Fontaine and his music has the power to flow into your consciousness and lift your energy. His voice has an unmistakable resonance and his lyrics speak to all Jah )God9s) children. Nasio was the youngest of seven children born to a Carib Indian mother and father of African descent, in the village of Carte-Bois. The family lived in a one-room wooden country house without running water or electricity. Before heading off to school, Nasio and his brothers and sisters walked miles to the Gwiyo River to fetch fresh water for the household. When he was eight years old, Nasio began singing in the Bagatelle school and the village Catholic church. Nasio had a habit of making instruments out of everything he could find. 3My Dad, Atto, made my very first instrument, a piece of board with fishing lines for strings; it meant everything to me.2 According to the village residents, Nasio was often the highlight of the annual school talent shows, and 3a blessing to listen to2. Lovers of reggae music throughout the world know Nasio9s name, his voice and his conscious lyrics. He speaks of revolution, of waking up the sleeping consciousness of oppressed and freedom loving people across the Earth. In his own words, 3the music is important; I want my music to be my contribution to the people of the world.2 The world of Reggae and indeed the world of music needs a new voice, get ready to be "Living in the Positive" with Nasio Fontaine.
