I will be sending out renewal packets or new membership packets to anyone who I've notified that a renewal or new membership has been received. These will go out tomorrow (6/12). Anything that comes in from this point forward will be processed when I return in late July. Renewal notices for June went out last week, and renewal notices for July went out early in yesterday's mail. Playlists from May were mailed last week. I will not be sending a playlist for June. I will combine any July shows with June and do one mailing in early August. If you are overdue with your membership dues, please take care of that now, and I will process those when I return in July. Once I return, anyone who is overdue and has not sent in dues will be dropped from the membership list. I do not have time to send reminders. The further we move into the new millenium, the more dancehall and hip-hop seem to interact & mingle to produce some potent off-spring. Dancehall has become a part of the mainstream in the U.S., as the BUZZ was followed by the DIWALI, which has now been succeeded by the COOLIE DANCE. Elephant Man's new anthem "Jook Gal" alongside Kiprich and rappers Twista & Young Bloodz shot up from #20 last month straight to the top. Whenever we think that the COOLIE DANCE's time MUST be over, it manages to rebound with a vengeance. Mr.Vegas & Wayne Anthony are still pulling it up on the riddim at #3, while Captain Barkey & Patchy's "Anthem" clocks in at #4. Christini & Delly Ranks' "Shake Shake" climbs up to #6, while Elephant Man's "Head Gwaan" re-enters at # 13. South Rakkas' new RED ALERT charts, as Cecile raced up to hit the #2 spot with "Hot Like We". Nuff people hail Tanya Stephens as THE strongest female artist at this time (with the success of her "Gangsta Blues" album on VP) but I beg to differ, as Cecile takes the cake with strong tunes on nearly every riddim she rides. The selector Fire Links' first relase MAD INSTRUMENTS DANCE is represented by Capleton's scorching "Turn It Up", while another various artist selection is again led by the energy god Elephant Man. His lyrics are recycled from 2002's ESCALADE yet Sasha contibutes nicely alongside Big Tigger. Mr.Vegas' "Tamale" is holding tight at #12 , as the release date for his third album "Pull Up" has been pushed back to the end of June. Baby Cham & Jimmy Cheezetrix dropped down from #1 to #17, yet I expect Dave Kelly's PRETTY PRETTY riddim to recover & make a comeback. His brother Tony Kelly's (whom Jeremy Harding calls " possibly Jamaica's most competent & complete dancehall producer at this time") GRINDIN finally climbs on board in the form of TOK's "No Way Jose". Speaking of TOK: their "Gal U A Lead" has become a dancehall classic already and continues to chart at #7. Renaissance's hot, second beat TUNDA KLAP also makes it this month with Vybez Cartel's hardcore "Tekk". Stonelove's crisp, new BAD FLU has gotten folks infected in NM, especially Hawkeye's "Nah Penny Dem". Rootical reggae seems to be witnessing a re-surgence in New Mexico as well, as no less than 5 tunes hit the top 20. Degree's counteraction to Tanya Stephen's "Its A Pity" has continued its climb (to #5) while the "Gangsta Blues" lady holds her corner at # 14. Natty King is still telling us "Dont Bring Your Guns To Town" while Henfield re-released Richie Spice's "Earth A Run Red"from 1998 due to its enormous success in Jamaica just within the last year. Last but not least Beres Hammond and Big Youth team up on the excellent "Good Ole Dancehall Vibes" On the hardcore front nuff KILLER riddims are bubblin' under and are on the rise. I expect to see selections from FRENCH VANILLA, the pumping BLACKOUT and the RED ALERT in these charts in the future. Until then, keep rockin': Don Martin [4] !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >From Reggae Vibes Prod NL (#1050) Subject: Reggae Vibes News Bulletin (June 9, 2004) Date: Wed, 09 Jun 2004 20:56:06 +0200 From: Reggae Vibes Productions NL -*- http://www.reggae-vibes.com -*- -*- News Bulletin (June 9, 2004) -*- Playlist for Thursday, June 10, 2004. This past month or so has been full of exciting shows and events, and the rest of June is sure to be amazing as well. One week from today, Poetz4Peace starts it's first ever US tour to promote "A Pair of Olive Leaves" the group's debut release on Olive Tree Music. Shows include musical performances, poetry readings, and a few other very special engagements in and around the San Francisco Bay Area, leading up to a performance at the 11th annual Sierra Nevada World Music Festival on June 20th, 2004. Below please find a copy of the tour's press release: ----------------------------------------- FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 9th, 2004 Rhyme of the Century: Poets Perpetrate Words of Peace on US Soil (Updated with New Events) Later this month, US audiences will be treated to the unique music and poetry group Poetz4Peace as it makes its US debut in California. The group includes core members Haji Mike and Zeki Ali, Cypriots from opposite sides of the line that has divided the island for 29 years. Their messages of peace and reunification are supported by music influenced by hip-hop, ambient, funk, reggae, dancehall, and dub. The US tour includes a reception with Cypriot Consul Nicolaos Theophanous and an appearance at the prestigious Sierra Nevada World Music Festival as well as other performances. Songs on the CD released last year, A Pair of Olive Leaves, make a plea for peace to prevail not only in Cyprus, but throughout the world. The disc was recorded largely over the Internet by Poetz on opposite sides of the Atlantic. Zeki Ali described the goals of the project, Our trials will be the greatest gifts to our children and we lovingly take our part. Peace is not just an alternative to war; it is a way of life. A universal religion. We are simple people who are proud to be simple. Holding down the US side of the cyber-collaboration is San Franciscos Steffen Franz, label head of PSM Recordings. He further elaborated on the Poetz mission to make this music heard throughout the world and to enjoy the knowledge that we are doing something that is changing the world around us for the better. Another unique aspect of Poetz4Peace is the manner in which it was funded. The Bi-communal Development Programme (BDP) supported not only the recording and release of the CD but also educational workshops aimed at youth. The BDP, based in Cyprus, is supported by the United Nations Development Programme, United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and United States Agency for International Development. A second CD A Cyprus Thing OTM002 is due for release later on this summer, and features 29 songs from amazing artists from both sides of the "Greenline". Olive Tree Music LTD (Cyprus) and PSM Recordings (US) provide label support for Poetz4Peace. Members of Poetz4Peace: Steffen Franz (AKA Stand Out Selector) Producer and Beat maker on the CD is also PSM Recordings label founder, producer, remixer, beat creator. Zeki Ali poet, writer, radio presenter, Haji Mike Lyricist and MC on the album is also a poet, musician, producer, PhD, vragga dagga don, and P4P/OTM founder. After seeing a handful of doctors, and finding no possible treatment or cure, Shana was handed back to her maker on Wednesday, June 2nd, 2004. This was indeed the saddest day in PSM history, as Shana was a teacher, a pillar, a motivator, and a best friend to the entire PSM staff and crew. Thank you to all of the people who came out last Tuesday for "Shana's Going Away Party" where over 35 people (and some dogs) came to wish her well on her journey home. Thank you as well to the 50 or so people who sent e-mails to wish us condolences. Shana was so important to all of us as she taught us how to love unconditionally, which, in this time, seems more important than ever. She will continue, as always, to guide us and bond us, and will forever be remembered. Positive Sound Massive Recordings will be closed every year on September 6th, her birthday, to remember this amazing part of PSM's history. More information to come on a page devoted to Shana on our website, and sometime down the road, an event to mark her untimely passing. Shana will be with us always. Thank you as well to all of the folks at SPCA Animal Hospital, San Francisco. Please, if you can, support any and all of the works that these people undertake. ----------------------------------------- We look forward to seeing you out at some of these next events. Please feel free to check out the PSM website for up to the minute interviews and shows for both Poetz4Peace and Rocker-T. Respect and regards to everyone, and please, take care of each other. Professor Skank [10] !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >From Michael Kuelker (#1190) Date: Thu, 10 Jun 2004 20:59:43 EDT Subject: Book of Memory coming soon -- read excerpts now Dear RAW friends: Book of Memory: A Rastafari Testimony is the spiritual memoir / oral history of Prince Williams, a Jamaican Rasta elder who has composed this work in collaboration with me over a period of seven years. It is to be published in eight to ten weeks by CaribSound Ltd., and I invite you to read newly published excerpts: * The June 2004 issue of Reggae Review has an excerpt in which Prince debates Younga Dread on 'The Woman Question.' See www.reggaereview.com/reviews.htm. * The new edition of Reggae Festival Guide contains an excerpt of Prince cooking ital food and reasoning about ital livity. Read the piece in the pages of the new issue of RFG, or see the same excerpt at www.caribsound.com/id25.html. Thanks to the editors of both magazines for showcasing this exciting new memoir, which is cast in Prince's voice and illustrates Rasta ideology fused with autobiography like no other book about the Rastafari. This is the project that has brought me to Jamaica twice a year for the last several years and defined me as a writer. Prince Williams is a visionary and deep-thinking Rastaman, and his book is deeply embedded with the stuff of Jamaican culture -- memories of living and working at the Hampden Sugar Estate in Trelawny parish in the 1950s and '60s; sighting Rasta as a teenager in the 1950s, well before it became hip to style oneself a Rasta; living through the Coral Gardens Incident of 1963, an episode of repression against Rastafarians; witnessing the state visit of Haile Selassie in 1966 -- and in addition, Prince offers his views of the turbulent 1970s, when he worked on a Cuban-Jamaican construction crew building low-cost housing for the poor; bush medicine; the politics of One Love; and much more. See www.CaribSound.com for more information and also for new band pictures and testimonials about Communication Drums, the nyahbinghi album by Prince Tebah & the Sons of Thunder. I first saw the Sons of Thunder at a commemoration of the Coral Gardens Incident in 1999, and in encountering them again a year later, we began working on an album, which also has the participation on one track of Prince Williams. They are fine musicians, highly creative in a number of the arts, deserving of more attention. Nyahbinghi is not just yesterday's news (e.g. Count Ossie and the early Ras Michael classics), and the Sons of Thunder are excellent representatives of that living tradition. Many people in RAW have aided me over the years as I have pursued this project, and it will be my pleasure to thank them in public in another message, just as I have named them in the acknowledgements in the book. Until then, please allow a collective thanks to suffice. Michael Kuelker CaribSound Ltd.
