But what about stem reggae, trunk reggae, branches and leaves reggae? Fruit and nuts reggae? We need new descriptors for these three albums of new material that have recently been released by several very notable old-timers. First consider The musically marvelous Meditations. This group boasts the same composition as when it was formed back in 1974yes, these are the SAME guys. They were roots at the time, and they havent just been lying in the ground dormant since then. Theyve grown and matured as individuals and as artists, with Stand In Love our most recent evidence of that16 tracks worth of evidence. Along with the expected sing-along harmonies, pleasant tunes and lyrics that deal with the deeper needs of individuals and society, the album offers varied tempos and propulsive rhythms, a lively toast by Flourgon, a vigorous hymn of praise, a touch of nyahbinghi, and occasional doowop nonsense lyrics. To sum up: the original Meditations combo is still together and still producing excellent new material three decades on. Surely theyre more than roots; theyre a fully grown tree, if not a whole shady grove. Next, Clinton Fearon. He was much loved as one third of The Gladiators, but prior to that, in the early 1970s, he was a Studio One session musician. His roots are so grounded they have rootlets. But there has been growth since he parted ways with Albert Griffiths, and nowadays Fearons musical creativity has acquired a different form, producing new fruit with The Boogie Brown Band. Therefore, although at times the music on his new album, Give and Take, may sound like something from his old group, more often it has its own strong identity. I dont recall flutes in the earlier stuff, for example, or such a bold viola; here they fit into the mix effortlessly, naturally. The song writing is absolutely wonderful: Wages of Love, Parable Sound, Blood for Blood, Feel the Spirit, Stop the Hateas different as they all are from each other, each has an unforgettable melody and powerful production. Its as though a new stema very strong onehas been grafted onto the roots of yesteryear, and the resulting fruit is sweet indeed. Finally, The Italsperhaps more appropriately called Keith Porter, given that the harmony group of old is barely intact on this recording. Although the liner notes claim that the remaining two original members are present, theres little evidence of them in the listening; most of the harmonies are provided by other voices. So Porter is definitely the main creative force on Mi Livity: he not only sings lead, he wrote all 16 songs and produced all but three of them. Hes done a fine job in every respect. His assured vocal technique can project urgency in Humanity, reproach in Heathen Rage, frustration and concern in Battlefield, devotion and humility in Holy, Holy, and a Gregory Isaacs-style seductiveness in The Way You Are. Most of the melodies are immediately appealing, with great hooks, set to imaginative arrangements; even the lyrics are often a step above the usual. And definitely, youll want to move your body to the rhythms. So there you have it: the latest Itals album is beautiful and powerful, but its not actually The Itals. The roots remain, but the tree is different. These three albums are terrific, but maybe my preoccupation with roots is branching off too far; its a fitting metaphor, yet difficult to maintain when were talking about music made thirty years after whats generally considered the roots era. No doubt that fact explains the dubious terms modern roots reggae and contemporary roots reggaetheyre certainly preferable to thick trunk reggae or broad, shady tree reggae. Since these alternate terms arent going to twig with anybody, Id be a sap not to just leaf the whole thing alone.
