He was considered Jamaica's greatest engineer, and his work with Joe Gibbs produced some of reggae's finest music including classic works from Peter Tosh, Culture, Dennis Brown, Black Uhuru and the Mighty Diamonds. For a sample of Errol Thompson's work with Joe Gibbs, see The Mighty 2: Joe Gibbs and Errol Thompson. Heartbeat A&R Director Chris Wilson reflects... Errol was one of the great and important figures in Reggae, and I was fortunate to meet and work with him. He was so instrumental in the evolution of Reggae Music that his loss is incalculable. He was responsible for the recording of some of the greatest music ever released in Jamaica, including Burning Spear's Marcus Garvey sessions. He never enjoyed the fame so justly due him and many of his works have been attributed to others, but because of his tenure at Randy's studio and his later work with producer Joe Gibbs, Errol will always be remembered as a true legend. Some of you know that Mikey General and I collaborate on helping the Jamaica National Children's Home. This orphanage is located in Mona, Jamaica. The Tegwyn Special Unit is a wing of this same home which cares for physically and mentally challenged children. Over the years we have raised enough funding to buy an industrial washing machine, freezer, new kitchen counter, lawn mower and other necessary items. The kids are mostly in wheel chairs, unable to wash and take care of their physical needs. Underwear is a much needed commodity. Anyone interested in donating a package or two for Sis Zema and I to take down in January, may email me at sisirie@io.com The underwear can be for girls or boys, preferably cotton, and in any sizes from the youngest to about age 14. Even one package is very helpful. Also, please include a postcard from the town or city you are from for the kids to enjoy! They will see that people from all over are thinking of them. I will also taking a plaque down thanking the workers and caretakers of the home. If any RAW member works or owns a trophy or plaque company, please contact me. I am willing to pay! lol. Book of Memory is the oral history / spiritual memoir composed by Jamaican Rasta elder Prince Williams and edited by me. A lot of R.A.W. people have helped me along the way, including Roger Steffens, Sista Irie, Clinton Fearon, Barbara Kennedy, Jah Breeze, Russell Gerlach, Daniel Frankston and many others, and it is a pleasure to thank them. I began the project in 1997 with Prince, whom I had known since '92, because I saw such a gap in the literature about Rastafari -- a number of truly remarkable studies of the Rasta movement but pitifully few books by Rastas in their own words. The book tells Prince's narrative and covers a lot of topics central to Rasta culture. It's 425 pages with a whole heapa pictures, footnotes and glossary terms. Read excerpts and get more details anytime you like at _www.CaribSound.com_ (http://www.CaribSound.com) . The site is being primed for an extensive revision in the next few weeks.
