The multi-dimensional African celebrations in honour of the reggae star's 60th birthday will be a month long affair under the banner Africa Unite, the title of one of Bob Marley's hit songs. Additionally, the programme of "Africa Unite" will be using nine other of Bob Marley's songs as themes of different events throughout the month of February. The other songs are War, So Much Trouble (In The World), Uprising, Get Up Stand Up, Redemption Song, No Woman Nuh Cry, One Drop, Exodus, and One Love. The major event of the celebrations will be on Sunday, February 6 (Bob Marley's birthday) there will be a gala concert at Mascoll Square in Addis Ababa. Included in the line-up are Belafonte, Kidjo, the Marley children, the I-Three, Cedella Marley (Bob Marley's mother) and artistes from different parts of Africa. "The Africa Unite celebration is a project which has been undertaken by the Bob Marley Foundation and the Rita Marley Foundation," revealed project coordinator, Marcia Stewart who is based at the United Nation Unicef office in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. "It is in honour and to celebrate not only black history month 2005, but additionally, it's in celebration of Bob Marley's 60th birthday," added Stewart, affectionately called Queen Mother Moses. According to the former wife of roots and culture reggae singer Fredlocks, the celebrations on the continent kicks off on February 1, with an opening ceremony to be attended by various heads of states, then on the second, third and fourth there will be three days of plenary presentations. On the fifth, there will be gala fund rising dinner at the Ethiopian Palace. "There are several partners involving in the Africa Unite celebrations. These include the African Union, and because the African Union is one of the partners, the 53 member countries of that organisation, will also be participating," explained Stewart. The Ethiopian government is also involved at the level of the ministries of information, tourism, foreign affairs, youth, sports and culture as well as the Mayor's office. Then there are corporate sponsors such as the World Bank and Palm Pictures based in England. As part of the celebrations there will be workshops, symposiums, photo exhibitions among other activities. "Unicef (United Nation Children Educational Fund) which is also one of the partners, will be flying in children from different countries on the continent to be part of a parade with children from different areas of conflict. They will be holding hands with the flags of their respective countries. The message this will send is that there can be peace, if it is even among the children," Stewart said. Although both foundations (Rita Marley and Bob Marley) have decided to host a series of activities in Ethiopia, Marley's birthday will also be observed in other African countries. While the main theme of the celebrations on the continent is "Africa Unite", in Jamaica the theme will be "One Love". Jamaica Cultural Development Commission (JCDC) in association with the North Carolina based Robert Roskind family along with a number of Jamaicans describing themselves as a "Group of Healers", will put on a free "One Love" concert at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre. For the February 6, show, the organisers have invited a number of conscious artistes such as Abijah, Luciano, Junior Reid, Culture, Jimmy Cliff, Quincy Jones, Taj Mahal, Santana, Lionel Richie, Mackie Conscious, Mikey General, Cherry Natural among others. "We invited all the conscious artistes who are likely to be available at that time. We don't at this time have any idea who will accept the invitation," Roskind who since 2002 has organised 52 "Healing of the Nation" concerts mainly in schools across the island, told the Observer. The author of two books on Jamaica, Rasta Heart and Gathering of the Healers added: "My family's goal is to awaken and remind Jamaica of its destiny to teach one love." The local "Group of Healers" consists of Barry Chavannes, leader of the Maroons Frank Lumsden, Antoinette Haughton, Jean Lowrie Chin, Elaine Wint Leslie, Colin Leslie, Bobby Stephens, Trevor Munroe and Robert Russell. Robert Nesta (Bob) Marley who was born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Miles, St Ann, lost his battle with cancer on May 11, 1981 [3] *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*= >From Robert Roskind (R.A.W. #) Subject: ROSKIND: NEW ARTICLE RE BOB MARLEY'S 60TH IN Jamaican Gleaner Date: Mon, 22 Nov 2004 10:01:51 -0500 From: ROBERT ROSKIND LETTER OF THE DAY - Ja's 'One Love' a gift to the world published: Friday | November 19, 2004 THE EDITOR, Sir: AS THE debate, both in Jamaica and abroad, swirls about the effect of some of your dancehall music, I would like to encourage Jamaicans everywhere not to define themselves by this latest public perception. This music does represent one element of your national consciousness but a minor one, just as 'gangsta rap' represents only a splinter of the American heart and soul. If a society is to define itself by the acts of a few let it be the acts of the best of its citizens. Jamaica must define itself by its 50+ well-known conscious artistes who have put out a global message of 'One Love' for over three decades. We have seen the effects of your message firsthand. Our family has organised and sponsored over 50 'Healing of the Nation Concerts' islandwide, mostly in your schools as well as public concerts on Bob Marley's birthday. These concerts, featuring such conscious artistes as Abijah, Ernie Smith, Luciano, Mackie Conscious, Prezident Brown, Warrior King, Junior Reid, Cherry Natural, Bushman, Keteis and I'ngel Chanta, encourage the audience to teach 'One Love' in their lives. The response is always enthusiastic. CONSCIOUS MESSAGE Any conscious message delivered through the music of talented artistes goes deep into the heart. In this same vein, Jamaica must stop defining itself by the few gunmen, thieves, drug dons and corrupt politicians. It must stop defining itself by its IMF debt, per capita income, and number of potholes. Jamaica must begin to define itself by its over two million hardworking people who toil every day against difficult conditions to live a righteous and an honest life. Jamaica must define itself by its global impact which far exceeds what might be expected, given your size and financial constraints. Your musical talent is unrivalled in the world. Your coffee is considered the best; your beaches and land some of the most beautiful. Your accent, dialogue and 'culture' are copied by musicians, advertisers, and media personalities worldwide. The progressive concepts of your philosophers like Bob Marley, Marcus Garvey, Miss Lou, Barry Chevannes, Rex Nettleford, Luciano, Burning Spear, and many others are studied and respected through their books, words and lyrics. Just the word 'Jamaica' is magical to many. However, more than all this, it is your love that has made the greatest impact. Everywhere your people are known for their love. Through visits to your island and listening to your conscious music, this love has gone out as a wave of healing to every corner of the planet. Jamaica's message of 'One Love' is a gift to the world and because of this your National Pledge, "to advance the welfare of the whole human race," is not a future goal but a present reality. Keep that drumbeat going. Play your conscious music on your radio and TV stations. Support your conscious artistes at your clubs, concerts and festivals. Let your young be infused with their messages of love, peace and justice. Give thanks. As you may know, Zimbabwe is in economic chaos and many good people are suffering. My friend Onasis Mutasa has asked me to help him raise money for his wifes pending medical treatment. This is not just a donation. This is a wonderful opportunity to help our friend and in return you will receive a box of African art, batiks, statues and/or carvings. Onasis has sent me 3 or 4 such boxes over the past couple years and I have been able to sell the goods at my performances and my wife Mika has sold them at fairs and events. The artifacts and batiks are so beautiful that we always keep a few for ourselves. This would be a great way to help a family and take care of your gift buying. Onasis needs only $300 US to pay for his wifes emergency treatment. The boxes I have received cost me $220.00 and were worth about $300 to $500. We passed on good deals to people and kept some stuff, but the crafts were absolutely beautiful. Onasis is an honest man who cries for a way to make an honest living. He actually sent me the first box with no up front money and I sent him the money made from the sales. Since then, I have wired him money and he contacts me through email and soon a box of beautiful art from Momma Afrika arrives. There is always a chance that some stuff may breakhowever Onasis is packing much better now. So far I have not had to pay a duty. Please take advantage of this Afrikan connection and help this man and his family. I do not have the money right now and he fears the worst if his wife does not get treatment. I can guarantee that Onasis is a honest man who needs your help. I have been involved with many business people for years and unfortunately I have seen many who speak of desperate situations that in truth are fabrications. Onasis wifes health situation is serious and he needs our help. Trust me, this man will come through with his word. Please contact me Geoff Stumpa Stump at 970-927-0471 or at stumpamon@yahoo.com if you have any questions. Otherwise, please act now and write to Onasis to arrange the contents of your package and payment. You will be helping a positive young family survive and they will enrich your lives.
