His new album "Hold On Strong", an amazing new album being released on the Colorado based Zionway label, should be available in about a month. This new album features 12 new tracks of roots and culture, conscious dancehall, with quite a bit of hip-hop flavor as well. More info on this to come in the next installment of "News on the Net" Also in the work. Also in the works is "Retrospeck" a new full length CD, which follows on the heals of a 12" EP released in mid 2004. This series is a collection of hard to find, and limited release tracks only now being made available in one place for the first time. This CD will be released in Panama to begin with as there has been huge interest and support from main stream radio. The US release date should be right before Thanksgiving. We will keep you posted on this title as it develops. Both of these titles will be distributed in the United States by Independent Distribution Collective (check out the website at the address below), our new distribution company. As many of you have already heard, many of our partner labels (Strong Foundation, Kulcha Shok Music, PSM, Tangent Records, Olive Tree Music, Emerald Triangle, Dila Productions, Pyramind Sound, and AFour Records) have teamed up and formed an alliance. This company is already selling to 150 stores in the US, and hopes to reach over 500 stores nationally by the end of 2005. It is also our hope to focus on some of the missing aspects of independent label and artists potential sales by making a main facet of our business "non-traditional" retail sales points. Other aspects include marketing to a worldwide audience by the end of 2005. Artists and Labels IDC will be representing in our current catalog over the next two months includes; Oakland Hip Hop artist Prozack, Seattle based Reggae Artist Adrian Xavier, Spanish Reggae sensation Red I, Miami born Hip Hop DJ CoopDville, and Colorado's ZionWay Records. Girlz Who Roll!!! Friday, October 15th 8:00 PM - 1:00 AM Doors Open: 7:30 PM Show Begins: 8:00 PM The sequel to last year's "Girlz Who Rock!" You asked for it, we answered, and here it is! A mini-festival showcasing female fronted originals bands and female filmmakers. Films by Pamela Busch, Alica Dattner, Diane Griffin, CECE Cannabo and more . . . Like life, things are subject to change! Ticket Information - Contact: Kate Laws E-Mail: mailto:kate_flyingvenus@hotmail.com Phone: 650-754-0869 General Admission Ticket - Must be over age 21: $10 per person To be added to the mailing list: http://www.flyingvenus.com/ * More About "Girlz Who Roll . . . !" - Mission Statement: To foster community and diversity, while increasing visibility and opportunity for women in the arts. This is the second year of the "Girls Who . . ." series. Last year it was bands. This year we are adding filmmakers. Who knows what will happen next year? Got an idea? Let us know, cuz thats how it all started. Origins: The "Girls Who . . . " series is the brainchild and dream of Jean Mazzeil, founder of Flying Venus. As an "older" (over 25) woman who made her living in the arts since graduation, Jean's career has included many times when she has felt and fought to level the playing field by creating, providing and participating in giving women opportunities to be seen and recognized for their artistic endeavors. Starting with dance, Jean moved to theater - producing plays where the female roles were equal to or out-numbered male roles - to music - where she produces shows where the female/male ration is balanced. The "Girlz Who . . . " series is a vehicle for women to express themselves artistically where age and looks are not what 'talent' is all about. Jean says, "Put your plastic surgery money into some new gear and lets rock!" More About Flying Venus and the 'Girlz Who Roll!!!' Event - Please visit: http://www.jeanmazzei.com/girlz Next Month... Karney, SOS and the band hit the road for one final tour of the Pacific Northwest. See below for all of the details... FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Oct. 12, 2004 SFs Karney On the Road Again! CD Release Tour Stops in Seattle, Portland and Weed, CA Confirmed Composer and indie-rocker Karney will tour the Northwest in support of her new full-length CD All Connected with stops in Seattle, Portland, Weed, CA and tentatively, Eugene, OR. She celebrates not only the release of All Connected but also distribution deals with Burnside Distribution to distribute her new CD and with IDC of Oakland to distribute her back catalog including her self-titled debut full-length and several singles. The CD has already generated a good buzz on radio and in the press and now fans will have the opportunity to catch Karneys artistry live and on CD. Karney, who most recently appeared at the Castro Street Fair in San Francisco will, as usual, bring along talented co-collaborators such as SFs Stand Out Selector. Karney recently followed up a well-received full-length release and two singles with All Connected, a recording on which Karney maintains her tradition of not shying away from harsh politic truths but doing so with humility, humor and the accompaniment of the stellar sonic creations that are her original compositions. Her music stirs rousing reggae riddims washed over with funk force gales and powerful vocals in the tradition of singer-songwriters and blueswomen. Although she has forged her own path as a guitarist, keyboardist, and vocalist, Karneys voice does call to mind some of the greats that came before her. Joel Selvin of the San Francisco Chronicle said she can evoke '70s rock queens such as Ann Wilson of Heart, Stevie Nicks of Fleetwood Mac or Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders, although the intense drive for self-expression that fuels her writing and singing reeks of punk poet Patti Smith. Yes, KNON 89.3 Irie FM Dallas has been spinning Reggae on the Radio for 21 years! Special recognition goes out to DJ Ima Uwagbai, KNON 89.3 Irie FM the African Forum, Wednesday nights 10pm to 12 Midnight. Ima Uwagbai kicked started the Reggae Format here in Dallas, TX 21 years ago. Ima being of both African and Jamaican heritage upon reaching Dallas, TX immediately recognized the Reggae drought and took action. Ima not only dreamed of Reggae on the Radio in this Reggae dry area, But he took the necessary steps to ensure that this become a reality and not just a dream, hence; the birth of what our worldwide audience have come to know as the African/Caribbean Programming here at KNON 89.3 Irie FM Dallas, Reggae Radio at it's best. It is with DEEP respect that this tremendous effort by Ima is acknowledged as a true labor of Love for the Message of Reggae music. Ima personally hand picked and trained all but two of KNONs Reggae DJ's. Some of the stories are very funny, so I encourage you all to send Ima your Big-ups! Email: _Ima@juno.com_ (mailto:Ima@juno.com) . I personally thank him for harassing me for over a year to join him on Air. I was so content in being the behind the scene Queen, me Queen Mushiya; being a shy person and all (smile). Yes, I was SHY!! My first couple shows with Ima I barely spoke two words and it was funny, after A LOT OF PATIENCE AND COACHING BY Ima, I warmed up and now HEY! You can't stop me. Ima has been a joy to work for and with. I personally applaud his hard work and dedication to this music we call Reggae. His work is evident as the station has grown in recognition for its Reggae Format On a worldwide level. It is heartwarming to receive recognition as far away as Morocco and close at heart as California and the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. This recognition can only be attributed to ones who put in 100+ of themselves as Ima has over the years. Some of his Protigis so to speak; went on to building their potentials with syndicated shows such as Tunde Obazee's - Empowerment Hour. Tunde was the "Strictly Reggae" selector for more than 15years! One of the most successful Reggae shows on the air. Unfortunately for our Reggae Crew, Tunde moved on to Syndication and handed over The Baton to another one of Imas Protigis the King of Monday Nights World Beat "- DJ Alex C - he now mans "Strictly Reggae" on Thursday nights with yes ANOTHER one of Imas Protigis Queen Amy. There are many steps to this Reggae DJ building block by Ima Uwagbai. In retrospect I will leave you with: The Reggae Posse of Dallas. KNON Reggae DJs and Crew. Productions is proud to announce a very special upcoming roots music presentation featuring legendary reggae singer/songwriter RAS MIDAS & the Bridge with special guests Root Awakening When: Thursday, October 28 @ 9 pm Where: MOE'S ALLEY, 1535 Commercial Way, Santa Cruz RAS MIDAS sold half a million of his single "Kudea-bamba" and scored several other reggae hits in Europe and Africa in the '70s and early '80s. Midas is still well-renowned and loved in those two continents, speaks seven different languages and sings in French, Swahili and English. Through decades of writing great songs and dynamically performing them worldwide, he's earned his title as one of the original roots reggae songwriters/composers/singers of the Bob Marley era, his music and lyrics as deep, pensive and uplifting as that of his contemporaries Joseph Hill (Culture) and Winston Rodney (Burning Spear). A world traveler who has spent much time in the USA, Europe and Africa, Midas incorporates many elements of soul, R&B, African, soca and rock musics into his unique sound. He divides his time between Jamaica, France and California; that's why he performs only occasionally here in the States. When he agrees to do so, it's a special occasion and a real treat for those who love Ras Midas' music and message. Warming up the stage will be the Root Awakening band from the Bay Area, acclaimed for its renditions of the classic tunes of the formative years of reggae. Root Awakening also has released an award-winning original cd and worked with Ken Boothe, the Congos, Tippa Irie and Daweh Congo among other quality artists. "Run come" hear a true godfather of roots reggae music on Thursday, October 28 when RAS MIDAS & the Bridge bring forth the power of the music and the message of the Rasta man to MOE'S ALLEY in Santa Cruz.
